Cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, are forming new drivers of economic growth in China, a senior official said on Thursday.

\n

Minister of Science and Technology Yin Hejun told a news conference held by the State Council Information Office that the country has developed multiple world-class general-purpose artificial intelligence models, some with accuracy rates exceeding 95 percent.

\n

Over 100 exemplary application scenarios for artificial intelligence were created, Yin said.

\n

Breakthroughs in humanoid robotics technology have accelerated their use in industries such as automotive manufacturing, logistics, and power inspection.

\n

"It lays a foundation for a future trillion-renminbi industry," Yin said.

\n

Brain-machine interface technology has enabled paraplegic patients to stand and walk and helped blind individuals regain light perception. The brain pacemaker made in China is now fully commercialized, with implants conducted in 400 hospitals across eight countries. The pacemaker improves motor functions for about 30,000 patients with Parkinson's disease, he said.

\n

"This has become a new driver for high-quality development in healthcare," Yin said.

\n

"China will promote the combination of technological and industrial innovations to drive high-quality growth," he added.

\n

Artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and big data technologies are empowering the transition from traditional manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing, Yin said.

\n

For example, the development of a large-scale open-pit mine robotic transport and loading system provides a Chinese solution for global mining industry intelligent upgrades.

\n

The innovation capabilities of Chinese enterprises have significantly improved, according to Yin.

\n

In 2024, the number of high-tech enterprises surpassed 500,000, an 83 percent increase from recorded figures in 2020.

\n

China has achieved significant original breakthroughs in quantum technology, life sciences, material sciences, and space sciences over the past five years, Yin said.

\n

The country's comprehensive innovation capability ranking rose from 14th place in 2020 to 10th place in 2024, he said.

\n

For five consecutive years, China has led the world in the number of high-level international journal publications and international patent applications, he added.

\n

Last year, China's R&D investment across society exceeded 3.6 trillion yuan ($506 billion), marking a 48 percent increase compared to 2020. The investment intensity reached 2.68 percent, surpassing the average level of European Union countries. The number of people engaged in R&D ranked first in the world, he said.

Photovoltaic panels are arranged neatly in Yancheng.

\n

A 150-megawatt fishery-solar hybrid photovoltaic power project in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, has recently achieved full-capacity grid connection, adding luster to the city's green development.

\n

The project, situated in the city's Xiangshui county, was developed by three Yancheng-headquartered companies — Yueda Group, Yancheng Haixing Holding Group, and Jiangsu Xinghai Holding Group. It involves a total investment of about 440 million yuan ($61.81 million) and covers an area of approximately 200 hectares.

\n

Featuring the "fishery-solar hybrid" model, the project makes full use of land resources and combines aquaculture with clean energy production. It is expected to generate 216.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, saving approximately 68,300 metric tons of standard coal each year, reducing 187,300 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 30.24 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions, and conserving a large amount of freshwater resources.

\n

That will have a significant effect on promoting energy conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improving the ecological environment, local media reported.

\n

Rich in solar energy resources, Yancheng boasts an annual total solar radiation of 1,400-1,600 kWh per square meter. The average annual sunshine duration is around 2,280 hours, and the annual utilization time for power generation is approximately 1,200 hours. This natural endowment provides a strong foundation for Yancheng's photovoltaic power generation industry.

\n

Yancheng plays an active role in developing the integrated "wind-solar-fishery" power station model. On the coastal beaches, dense wind turbines are erected, beneath which photovoltaic panels can be installed, and under the panels, aquaculture can be developed. This integration maximizes the utilization of vast coastal mudflats.

\n

As one of the first batch of pilot cities for carbon peaking in the country, Yancheng's 20.34-gigawatt new energy grid-connected capacity comprises 48.6 percent wind power and 51.4 percent photovoltaic power. From January to August, the city's new energy power generation reached 24.55 billion kWh.

\n

Behind these impressive achievements is the cluster of industry-leading enterprises in Yancheng.

\n

In 2012, Trina Solar signed a memorandum with Yancheng to utilize the city's vast coastal tidal flats to develop an MW-level solar power station while investing in the Yancheng Economic and Technological Development Zone to build the first local module plant.

\n

Then, Yancheng's photovoltaic industry was still in its infancy, but the vast coastal tidal flat resources and the government's forward-looking thinking laid the groundwork for explosive growth in the photovoltaic industry.

\n

After more than a decade of rapid development, Yancheng has become one of the cities that house Trina Solar's extensive investment projects. Following Trina Solar, seven of the top 10 enterprises in China's photovoltaic industry, including Canadian Solar, GCL, Tongwei, and JA Solar have established a presence in the city.

\n

A large number of supporting businesses have also flocked in, covering key areas of equipment manufacturing such as silicon wafers, cells, modules, auxiliary materials, and intelligent equipment, forming a complete industry chain.

\n

Yancheng leverages its policy advantages to develop crystalline silicon photovoltaics as a landmark industry chain, encouraging financial resources to move toward the photovoltaic industry, and promoting rapid development across the entire industry.

The ongoing 22nd edition of the China-ASEAN Expo, which opened on Wednesday in Nanning in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, marks not just another milestone in the long-standing partnership between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, but also a renewed pledge to promote shared prosperity in the region.

\n

In his keynote address at the opening ceremony, Vice-President Han Zheng highlighted the vitality and resilience of China-ASEAN cooperation, underscoring the complementarity between their economies, and their cultural bonds and common commitment to multilateralism and free trade. This complementarity is not static but has evolved in step with global changes and the domestic development of both sides.

\n

As Han emphasized, China-ASEAN trade has grown not only in scale but also in quality. What once revolved around raw materials, agricultural products and daily necessities has steadily shifted toward high-tech, green and digital products. China's industrial base and technological prowess align with ASEAN's consumer markets, resources and labor force. This reflects both sides' determination to embrace innovation-driven growth and sustainable development. The expansion of trade categories also demonstrates the confidence that China and ASEAN have in each other's markets and development trajectories. In this sense, China-ASEAN economic relations are not just transactional — they are transformational.

\n

Moreover, connectivity has emerged as a defining feature of this cooperation. Projects under the Belt and Road Initiative, coupled with ASEAN's own connectivity master plan, have knitted together roads, railways and ports, enabling the smooth flow of goods and ideas. At the same time, institutional connectivity — ranging from trade facilitation measures to standards harmonization — has created a more enabling environment for businesses and investors. These combined efforts are laying the groundwork for the establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0, which heralds higher levels of openness, inclusivity and mutual benefit.

\n

This partnership is not merely a matter of economics; it reflects a shared longing for peace, stability and development. As close neighbors with intertwined histories and cultures, China and ASEAN understand the stakes in maintaining regional harmony. Their cooperation provides a strong counterforce to the increasing duress of protectionism and geopolitical rivalry from elsewhere. Both sides uphold free trade, defend the international rules-based order and advocate multilateralism as an effective way to resolve disputes and advance global development.

\n

ASEAN is a priority in China's neighborhood diplomacy. As Vice-President Han underscored, the country regards it as a key partner in building a community with a shared future for humanity. This is backed up by its concrete actions to promote trade, investment and cultural exchanges, as well as the two sides' joint efforts to tackle pressing challenges such as climate change and digital transformation.

\n

Indeed, the transformation of China-ASEAN economic cooperation over the past decades has created the necessary conditions for a high-quality free trade arrangement. The proposed Free Trade Area 3.0 will not only lower tariffs and reduce barriers but also expand cooperation into emerging fields such as the green economy, digital economy and supply chain resilience. This reflects the forward-looking nature of the China-ASEAN economic partnership, which seeks not only to adapt to the times but to build together a future defined by openness and inclusivity.

\n

The expo demonstrates once again that China-ASEAN cooperation is built on the foundations of trust, complementarity and shared aspirations. It also serves as a reminder that the vitality of this partnership comes from its ability to grow with the times — expanding from goods to services, from physical to digital connectivity, and from bilateral initiatives to broader regional integration.

\n

In a world increasingly beset by uncertainties, the China-ASEAN partnership stands as a reference for how neighbors can join hands for common development while safeguarding regional peace. It is this spirit of cooperation, as Vice-President Han stressed, that will propel the China-ASEAN relationship to a brighter future, bringing tangible benefits not only to the two sides but to the wider international community.

The Chinese embassy in Israel refuted the Israeli leader's recent remarks that China is using social media to impose a "media blockade "against Israel as groundless and detrimental to bilateral relations.

\n

According to local media, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a meeting with a delegation of state legislators from the United States on Monday, claimed that some countries, including China and Qatar, are using social media to carry out a "media blockade" against Israel.

\n

In a statement released on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Israel said that China is shocked by the remarks made by the Israeli leader, which are completely groundless and detrimental to China-Israel relations. China strongly opposes and expresses grave concerns over such remarks, the spokesperson said.

\n

By blaming social media and then China for the criticism it is facing, Israel is making a misguided move that targets the wrong party and offers the wrong solution, the embassy stated.

\n

The spokesperson said the international community has been highly concerned about the situation in Gaza and broadly supports an early ceasefire and an end to the conflict — a move that would also help ensure the safe and prompt return of Israeli hostages. Within Israel, there have been growing reflective voices emphasizing that what the country needs is not a prolonged conflict, but a lasting solution for peace, the spokesperson said.

\n

Furthermore, the lopsided results of numerous votes on Palestinian issues at the United Nations and other multilateral forums clearly reflect the position of the majority of the international community, the spokesperson pointed out.

\n

Emphasizing that unilateral security is unsustainable, the spokesperson called for shared security as the only viable path to lasting peace. Israel's legitimate security concerns must be respected, just as Palestine's right to exist, to statehood, and to development must be fulfilled, the statement read.

\n

"We call on Israel to heed the strong voice of the international community, immediately halt military operations in Gaza, and secure a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire as soon as possible," the spokesperson said.

Beijing-based biotech unicorn METiS TechBio has rolled out what it calls the world's first AI-powered nano-delivery platform, NanoForge, which could reshape the way medicines are developed and delivered, paving the way for reprogrammable drugs.

\n

At the launch event in Beijing on Tuesday, cofounder and CEO Chris Lai compared the breakthrough to aerospace engineering. "NanoForge is like the SpaceX of drug delivery. It is both the rocket that delivers drugs precisely and the satellite that speeds up new drug development. This could solve one of the toughest problems in medicine, which is to get treatments exactly where they need to go, without harming healthy tissue," Lai said.

\n

Drug delivery has long been one of the industry's hardest puzzles. The rollout of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in 2020 showed the promise of lipid nanoparticle systems. These microscopic fat droplets can shield fragile molecules like mRNA and ferry them through the body. But applying them across multiple organs and scaling them for broader drug innovation have remained elusive.

\n

Lai explained that traditional drug delivery research relies heavily on trial and error, a slow and costly process with low success rates. For example, scientists may have to sift through tens of thousands of lipid combinations to identify a single viable LNP formula.

\n

NanoForge uses a generative AI model called PhatGPT, which designs new lipid molecules atom by atom, much like ChatGPT generates text word by word. It evaluates multiple parameters at once to optimize performance, then validates results through automated lab experiments. "For nucleic acid drugs, NanoForge significantly improves mRNA encapsulation and targeting. What once required screening tens of thousands of formulas can now be achieved in weeks," said Zhang Xiaoju, head of RNA innovation at METiS.

\n

METiS has developed three core solutions: AiLNP for nucleic acid delivery, AiRNA for mRNA sequence design and AiTEM for small-molecule drug formulation.

\n

So far, the company says Nano-Forge has produced more than 10 million lipid structures and collected around 100,000 data points to train its models. The platform has already shown targeted delivery in eight types of human organs and tissues, including the liver, lungs, tumors and the central nervous system.

\n

To secure its edge, METiS has filed or obtained more than 100 patents.

\n

Its drug pipeline includes more than 10 advanced programs. Seven have been validated in preclinical studies, while four are already in clinical trials. The lead candidate, an oncology therapy, has reached the pre-NDA stage, that is the final step before applying for regulatory approval.

\n

Drug development usually drags on for more than a decade and can cost upward of $1 billion. Founded in 2020, METiS seems to have broken that cycle, moving more than 10 programs into advanced stages within five years by combining AI with nanotechnology.

\n

Still, experts urge caution. "The ultimate goal of innovative drug development is to address unmet clinical needs, deliver strong efficacy and safety data in trials, and secure regulatory approval," said Fang Yang, executive director for healthcare and biotech at CEC Capital. "From that perspective, AI-driven drug platforms still need time and clinical validation."

\n

Lai acknowledged that METiS is in a "critical stage, moving from pre-commercial to commercial", with the focus now on ensuring both the platform and its pipeline generate sustained value.

\n

The business case appears compelling. According to consulting company Frost & Sullivan, the global market for intelligent drug-delivery solutions exceeded $18 billion in 2023 and will reach $52 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual rate of 17.2 percent. Nano-delivery technologies are expected to make up 42 percent of that market by 2025, or roughly $7.8 billion, underscoring its growing importance in the field.

\n

Investor interest has followed. In August, METiS closed a 400 million yuan ($55.6 million) Series D financing round. The fresh capital will support upgrades for NanoForge, pipeline expansion, global partnerships and new talent recruitment.

The eighth Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo will hold its opening ceremony at the international convention and exhibition center of Dunhuang.

\n

\n

\n\n

Gansu province in Northwest China once again stands on an important stage as the eighth Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo is to be held in Dunhuang city from Saturday to Monday. As a comprehensive international expo themed around cultural exchange and cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative, the event has facilitated BRI co-development, promoted Dunhuang culture and increased Chinese cultural influence.

\n

He Xiaozu, director of the Gansu provincial culture and tourism department, said: "Gansu has successively held seven sessions of the Dunhuang cultural expo. Nearly 10,000 guests from more than 120 countries and regions have participated in the event, which featured a series of cultural exchange activities such as forums, exhibitions, and performances. It has played an important role in promoting cultural integration, thought exchange and emotional connection among people of the countries and regions involved in the BRI, and also in telling China's stories well and expanding the influence of Chinese traditional culture."

\n

This year's expo has invited more than 1,000 domestic and foreign guests to participate and will organize 17 activities across seven categories, such as meetings and talks, cultural exhibitions, art performances and investment promotions. The 2025 Dunhuang Forum will take place concurrently, comprising six types of forums and 12 thematic activities.

\n

The exhibition at this year's expo will cover a total area of about 24,000 square meters, showcasing the latest achievements in world cultural heritage preservation and Dunhuang studies. It will also feature arts, intangible cultural heritage innovations and local customs from countries involved in the BRI, while highlighting the results of Gansu's efforts in intangible cultural heritage protection and new cultural and creative products.

\n

Historical heritage

\n

Gansu has a rich historical and cultural heritage and places emphasis on the protection of it. The province supports Dunhuang Academy in becoming a model for world cultural heritage protection and a leading center for Dunhuang studies. The province also promotes the deep integration of culture and tourism, aiming to develop the cultural tourism industry into a pillar sector.

\n

In the vast land of Gansu, there are UNESCO world cultural heritage sites such as Mogao Grottoes, one of the top 10 archaeological discoveries recognized by Archaeology magazine in the US in 2019, a total of 16,895 immovable relics, and three national archaeological site parks. It also boasts 8,809 representative items and 13,049 representative inheritors of intangible cultural heritage at different levels.

\n

It has always given priorities to the protection of cultural heritage and advanced the utilization and inheritance of such heritage.

\n

The fifth batch of 285 provincial-level intangible cultural heritage representative projects was announced in late 2024. A brick-carving workshop in the Linxia Hui autonomous prefecture was recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage productive protection demonstration center in March 2024.

\n

The province has continuously implemented a training plan for inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, with 16 people selected for the sixth batch of national-level inheritors and nine included in the first national list for "youth intangible cultural heritage video creation".

\n

These remarkable achievements collectively depict a vibrant picture of the inheritance and development of intangible cultural heritage in Gansu, showcasing the region's unique charm.

\n

The province has used eight cultural brands as a tool to craft a cultural matrix that enhances the influence of Gansu's culture. Among the brands are the ceremony of worshiping Fuxi, one of China's legendary ancestors, the Dunhuang cultural expo, Siku Quanshu (Complete Library in Four Sections), the magazine Duzhe (Readers), a dance drama named Flower Rain on the Silk Road and a documentary called Hexi Corridor.

\n

The 2025 ceremony in tribute to Fuxi captured the attention of Chinese people at home and abroad. People gathered in Tianshui city, commemorating the cultural ancestor in a solemn atmosphere, and strengthened their cultural identity.

\n

The Wensu Pavilion duplicate of Siku Quanshu, a comprehensive collection of Chinese traditional culture, has been preserved intact after centuries. Now, the second phase of its digital photocopying publication project has completed, obtaining data files that meet the standards for photocopying and database construction and can be developed and utilized in multiple forms.

\n

Young people are a critical baton in the "relay race" of cultural inheritance. A subsidiary of Duzhe Publishing and Media Corp published a children's story and several books for young students' urban study tours, which conveyed traditional culture and contributed to the development of Gansu into a culturally strong province.

\n

A new version of the classic dance drama Flower Rain on the Silk Road was staged recently. The creative team integrated more modern artistic expressions while retaining those ingrained classic elements, offering the audience a new visual feast.

\n

The launch of the 4K ultrahigh-definition version of Hexi Corridor has again brought this documentary into the spotlight, allowing more people to fall in love with this magical land. With solid steps in cultural relic protection, the continuous inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, and the development of cultural brands, Gansu's cultural development is advancing toward new heights and writing a chapter of inheritance and innovation in the new era.

\n

The province has boosted cultural relics survey work, gaining a thorough understanding of its cultural resources. It completed a field investigation of the fourth national cultural relics survey, discovering 4,576 new cultural relic clues. Additionally, the construction of the Hexi Corridor national heritage route, the Jiayu Pass Great Wall national cultural relics protection and utilization demonstration area, and some national archaeological site parks are steadily progressing.

\n

This series of work is making the network of cultural heritage protection in Gansu increasingly dense, which allows ancient cultures to have enduring vitality in the new era.

\n

Art blooms

\n

In recent years, Gansu's artistic stage has seen many excellent works, laying a foundation for the development of a culturally strong province through quality creations.

\n

The new play, whose name can be translated as The Light of Hadapu, is set when the Red Army's Long March passed through Hadapu, Gansu in 1935, showcasing the spirit of the Long March through a blend of characters and historical moments.

\n

Since its premiere, it has received enthusiastic audience responses and helped promote the Red culture. It was selected as a participating play in the ongoing 19th China Theatre Festival, showcasing the charm of Gansu's Red culture on a national stage.

\n

The large-scale historical documentary, whose name can be translated as Zuo Zongtang Recovers Xinjiang, is another masterpiece. It is centered on the 1870s historical event in which Zuo Zongtang led the army of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to recover Xinjiang and consolidate the northwestern borderland. The documentary artistically recreates the heroic deeds of Qing Dynasty soldiers who fought to defend national territorial integrity in challenging conditions through different scenes.

\n

Meanwhile, key productions including an acrobatic drama, a musical, and a play are being created and rehearsed, continuing to interpret regional charm and the spirit of the times, enriching the artistic matrix of Gansu.

\n

The inheritance and revival of classic dramas has also helped develop Gansu into a culturally strong province. A Long Opera piece, based on the story of a fisherwoman who avenges her father's death in the late Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), showcases the unique artistic charm of Long Opera through classic scenes.

\n

Since its premiere in 1959, it has been performed more than 3,000 times, with 10 million audience views. Since its inclusion in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's key traditional (classic) drama revival plan in 2024, young actors and actresses, under the guidance of influential artists Lei Tongxia and Dou Fengxia, have honed their singing and choreography, making the classic more in line with modern aesthetic needs while preserving the essence of the original play.

\n

Also, the "Sightseeing Gansu with the Pace of Art" series of activities has benefited local people and helped develop a culturally strong province. An intangible cultural heritage costume display event, together with a model contest featuring Tibetan costumes, was held in a scenic area in the Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture in July.

\n

At the Mars Base 1 in Jinchang city, music carnival activities provided the audience with a show that blended rock and rap in August. The banks of the Yellow River were equally lively recently, with 13 cultural performances held, offering art forms such as song and dance as well as acrobatics.

\n

From quality creations and classic inheritance to art exhibitions, performances and cultural activities that benefit the public, Gansu uses art as a brush to paint a picture of itself building into a culturally strong province, allowing the charm of its culture to bloom in the new era.

\n

Public services

\n

Gansu has built 104 public libraries, 106 cultural halls, 59 art galleries, 1,354 comprehensive cultural stations in towns (subdistricts), and 17,114 comprehensive cultural service centers in villages (communities). It has created three national public cultural service system demonstration zones and built 262 museums.

\n

This series of cultural facilities covering urban and rural areas, quality services, and a nationally leading museum density helps showcase Gansu's profound cultural background.

\n

This summer, the Gansu Provincial Museum offered visitors temporary exhibitions such as European knight armor and culture and an immersive experience of cave art. At the memorial hall of the Eighth Route Army's Lanzhou office, a thematic exhibition on the northwestern international transportation line during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) attracted numerous visitors, revisiting the arduous years through precious relics and detailed historical materials.

\n

From cities to villages, public cultural services are continuously expanding, allowing members of the public to access quality cultural resources.

\n

In the first half of 2025, Gansu launched 11,136 cultural activities, including performances, live broadcasts and lectures. Among them were 3,442 Spring Festival-themed public cultural activities, 5,898 sessions that brought opera to the countryside and 1,032 events on public reading.

\n

While promoting cultural benefits for the people, Gansu also focuses on high-quality cultural tourism development, building a domestically and internationally influential tourist destination and creating a nationally important cultural protection and inheritance center.

\n

It advances key tasks such as the construction of the Yellow River cultural tourism belt; the creation of the Hexi Corridor national heritage route; the protection, inheritance and use of cultural and natural heritage; and the revitalization and utilization of historical and cultural heritage in traditional villages. Gansu hopes to accelerate its transformation from a province rich in cultural and tourism resources to a strong cultural and tourism province, continuously converting cultural superiority into development advantages.

\n

Culture is a bond that connects people. Gansu uses cultural services to deepen exchanges and integration among various ethnic groups, making it an important vehicle for forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.

\n

This year, Gansu organized song and dance performances and opera beloved by the public to convey a message of national unity. In 11 A-level scenic areas, there are 24 "check-in" points featuring Chinese cultural symbols.

China's Wu Yibing reacts during his Hangzhou Open first-round win.

\n

Three strikes in a row and plenty more to come — Chinese tennis has swung off its anticipated home series in style, with a triumphant opening night on the men's circuit setting a victorious tone.

\n

The annual "China Swing" on the professional tennis calendar got off to a flying start for local fans on Wednesday after three Chinese men, led by the country's first ATP title winner Wu Yibing, each pulled off a tough three-set win at two ATP 250 tournaments held concurrently in the country, to underline their collective continuous rise on the men's circuit.

\n

Wrapping up a memorable night for the Chinese men was former junior world No 1 Wu, who proved once again that, if he stays fit, he belongs among the elites at the senior level by stunning sixth-seeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 7-6 (5),7-5 in front of a boisterous home crowd on a rainy night at the Hangzhou Open.

\n

A native of the Zhejiang provincial capital, an emotional Wu addressed his hometown fans after securing a first win in his third match at the venue, following a tough third-round loss to Coleman Wong of Hong Kong, China, at the 2023 Asian Games and his injury-enforced retirement, also against Wong, in the first round at the tournament's inaugural edition last year.

\n

For the talented ball striker, who'd made his name as early as eight years ago by winning the 2017 US Open boys' title, the long-awaited home win came a bit late, yet right at the time he needs it the most.

\n

"My first win here in three years," the tearful 25-year-old said, before taking a long pause to compose himself during his post-match interview.

\n

"Normally, I am a good speaker, but tonight I feel I am a bit off doing this, because I am just so happy to finally win for the first time at home after experiencing so many setbacks due to injuries.

\n

"To come back home with a win, and having all my family, friends and fans supporting me, I really couldn't ask for more. It's all worthwhile," said Wu, who won Chinese men's first Tour-level title at the ATP 250 Dallas Open in Texas in 2023 and reached a career-high ranking of No 54.

\n

Boasting an aggressive style of play and early exposure to the pro circuit, Wu has long been touted as a flagbearer of the Chinese men's surge, yet a series of injuries on his shoulder, foot and back have slowed him down, dragging him into a mire of surgeries and subsequent rehabs over the past five years.

\n

Now that he's returned to the top-200, all the way from below No 500 a year ago, Wu said he doesn't mind undertaking the climb again, knowing he has what it takes to jostle with the world's best.

\n

"I've always believed in my game, drawing confidence from the work I put into training on daily basis, and the drills I had against elite players," said Wu, currently ranked 196th this week.

\n

"Hopefully, I can win more matches during the home run this year, leaving more beautiful stories to tell on my journey (back to the top)."

\n

A few hours earlier, in China's southwestern Sichuan province, Wu's younger compatriot Shang Juncheng, another surging talent on the men's tour, opened his title defense at the ATP 250 Chengdu Open with a commanding 6-1, 5-7,6-4 win over Belgian Zizou Bergs to announce his return from a long injury layoff that had sidelined him for six months this year.

\n

Recovered from a foot surgery he underwent in March, the 20-year-old Shang, who made his country proud last year by winning his maiden ATP title in Chengdu, dug deep to hold off the world No 46 and register his first win at, perhaps, the most important tournament since returning to action in July.

\n

"It's never easy coming back from surgery — your body feels completely different, and the rehab was really tough," said Shang, who held a career-high ranking of No 47 in October last year.

\n

"If I had to choose the timing for my comeback and to feel fully healthy again, I'd pick this tournament. Chengdu means a lot to me, and I just love being back in a home environment where I feel so supported."

\n

Shang's victorious opener made it a double delight for the center court fans in Chengdu, following a surprising first-round win by another 20-year-old talent, Zhou Yi, who upset British fifth seed Cameron Norrie 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (2) over two hours and 44 minutes.

\n

It marked a first victory over a top-50 opponent for No 304-ranked Zhou, as well as his first Tour-level win this season.

A growing number of provinces in China have extended marriage leave to up to 30 days or are considering doing so as part of efforts to build a fertility-friendly society amid declining birth rates.

\n

In May, health authorities in Sichuan province proposed increasing the duration of marriage leave from five to 20 days for all newlyweds, with an additional five days granted to couples who voluntarily undergo premarital medical examinations.

\n

The proposal was included in a draft amendment to a local population and family planning regulation, which closed for public feedback on June 30. Authorities said in July that the final version would be published by the end of the year.

\n

For decades, the standard duration for marriage leave across China was three days. Some regions previously offered extended leave to those marrying at what was then considered a relatively older age, defined as men over 25 and women over 23.

\n

Amid a growing trend of completely avoiding or delaying marriages among younger generations, along with decreasing birth rates, many regions have eliminated incentives for late marriage and instead extended marriage leave for all couples to encourage marriage and childbirth.

\n

The longest marriage leave, lasting 30 days, is currently implemented in Shanxi province in North China and in Gansu province in the northwest.

\n

Authorities in Shandong province announced in January that they would provide up to 18 days of marriage leave. Since June, residents in Hubei province have been entitled to 15 days of marriage leave, which can be taken all at once or split up over time.

\n

A few provinces, including Guangdong, Hunan and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region have maintained the three-day marriage leave policy.

\n

Jiang Quanbao, a professor at the School of Labor Economics at the Capital University of Economics and Business, said the three-day leave is insufficient given China's high population mobility.

\n

He said extending marriage leave can make it more convenient for young people to travel, stimulate consumption, improve wellbeing and even boost willingness to have children.

\n

Wei Shaoling, a marriage and family lawyer at Beijing Jingsh Law Firm, told Xinhua News Agency that marriage leave policies are designed based on factors such as regional demographic structure, marriage and fertility trends, and the capacity of employers.

\n

She suggested that companies adopt flexible working arrangements, allowing employees to adjust their schedules around marriage leave to reduce the impact of their absence.

\n

Official data shows that more than 6.1 million couples registered for marriage in 2024, a decrease of 20.5 percent compared with 2023.

\n

Following China and the United States' recent agreement to further extend the pause on tariff increases, US soybean industry representatives expressed their eagerness to see the resumption of soybean trade with China to continue the two countries' soybean trade partnership.

\n

"Unfortunately, right now, our farmers and exporters are being disadvantaged," said Jim Sutter, CEO of the US Soybean Export Council. He praised the cooperation between Chinese partners and US soybean farmers and exporters, which used to be a win-win deal, but said today's situation is a "lose-lose".

\n

China's share of US soybean exports fell to 44.6 percent last year, down from its peak of 62.4 percent in 2011, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture and China's General Administration of Customs.

\n

This year, the US has significantly increased tariffs on imports from many of its trading partners. In response, China has implemented measures to protect its interests, such as imposing higher tariffs on soybean imports from the US. Consequently, Chinese importers have turned to Brazilian soybean suppliers.

\n

Sutter said the current situation is very "disappointing" as US farmers are the "target" of this escalating trade tension.

\n

"When our farmers planted their soybeans in the springtime in April and May, they had every intention of being able to supply China. They believed that their No 1 customer would continue to be their No 1 customer.

\n

"But now, Chinese consumers are paying more, our farmers are selling for less," Sutter said.

\n

The USSEC, representing the entire US soy supply chain, has been working to attain market access for the use of US soy for human consumption, aquaculture and livestock feed in more than 80 countries worldwide. It has been working in China for 43 years, and in the past five to 10 years, USSEC has been making every effort to maintain the long-standing China-US soybean trade.

\n

Commenting on the potential recovery of the China-US trade deal, Sutter said: "I just can't imagine that we will never trade again. So I think it's important that we continue to do our work and build these relations, maintain them and build them for the future."

\n

Greater China Regional Director of USSEC Zhang Xiaoping emphasized the mutual benefits of China-US trade. "The complementarity of the two nations in the agricultural sector is too strong. The US has rich agricultural resources while China has a huge market."

\n

"Soybeans have been regarded as the most cost-effective protein ingredient in animal feed because of higher digestibility. Relying on its vast fertile land, US farmers can sustainably produce high-quality soybeans on a large scale to support the modernization of China's livestock, poultry, agriculture and food industries," Zhang said, adding that the high digestibility also means much lower waste, leading to positive effects on the environmentally friendly development of Chinese industries.

\n

A collaborative program between USSEC and its Henan provincial partners, focusing on a soybean innovation center, is advancing steadily with three main initiatives — innovative solution training, demonstration and promotion.

\n

Back in early 1990s, USSEC began to introduce practical solutions to help upgrade the Chinese industry. In recent years, USSEC introduced an In-Pond Raceway System with multiple benefits.

\n

Based on practices from US farms, USSEC created the Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol, which pledges to issue a sustainability certificate on each individual shipment out of the US for free. "This can be interpreted as support for China's achievement in sustainable food security, as the effort can make soy-related foods more affordable," Zhang said.

\n

Normally, October is the main season for US soybeans being shipped to China. "We had pretty good shipments to China last year and we haven't really missed any shipping seasons yet. We are looking forward to being able to ship our soybeans to China very soon," Sutter said.

\n

The assassination of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of US President Donald Trump, has shocked the United States to its core. For days, every major US media outlet has been consumed by the assassination — and by the same three words: division, polarization, violence.

\n

However, Kirk's assassination is not an isolated tragedy. It is the latest addition to a grim pattern. Trump himself has survived two assassination attempts in the past year. In April, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence was set ablaze. In June, two Minnesota legislators were attacked at their home on the very same day, leaving former Democratic speaker of the Minnesota House Melissa Hortman and her husband dead.

\n

The numbers tell a chilling story. Reuters identified last year at least 300 cases of political violence across the US between the Jan 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and the 2024 presidential election, marking the most significant and sustained surge in such violence since the 1970s. In the first half of 2025 alone, roughly 150 such incidents took place — double the number from the same period a year earlier. Violence is becoming routine, shaking public confidence in democracy itself. Members of Congress are canceling events, scaling back public appearances, with some even considering leaving politics altogether.

\n

Kirk's killing seems emblematic of a new political age of terror, in which disagreements calcify into hatred. After the killing of Kirk, Utah Governor Spencer Cox warned that, "When someone takes the life of a person because of their ideas or their ideals, then that very constitutional foundation is threatened."

\n

Political scientist Yascha Mounk uses the term "assassin's veto" to describe violence that silences debate by raising the cost of participation. Not surprisingly, the discussions and debates in the US have shifted from policies to identities, from disagreements over taxes or healthcare to existential battles in which opponents are no longer fellow citizens but enemies.

\n

It is tempting to compare the recent developments to the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s, but there are crucial differences between the two periods. Back then, in the US South where racism was entrenched, mainstream leaders largely avoided violent rhetoric. Today, notes historian Kevin Boyle, "that's no longer the case". Violence has entered the mainstream. A University of Chicago survey found that 20 percent of US adults openly condone political violence, while 60 percent say it is justified if the other side strikes first.

\n

Perhaps most alarming is the profile of perpetrators. The perpetrators of violence are getting younger. The suspected assassin of Kirk, Tyler Robinson, is just 22. A Georgia polling station gunman was 23. Increasingly, Gen Z is at the center of political bloodshed. According to the 2026 College Free Speech Rankings, 34 percent of 68,510 US college students at 257 universities nationwide now support using violence to block certain campus speeches.

\n

The internet is the accelerant. Investigators note Robinson's immersion in extremist online spaces, where political propaganda merged with gaming culture. After Kirk's death, digital platforms instantly became battlefields of hate, revenge and mobilization. Social media's immediacy transforms local violence into a national crisis, and enables extremist networks to coordinate across borders.

\n

The images of Kirk's killing only compounds the danger. Broadcast with cinematic brutality, the assassination scene carried the spectacle of a Hollywood horror film. Its shock value may be unmatched since the assassination of former US president John F. Kennedy. Psychologists warn of the "contagion effect" — one act inspiring imitators, avengers and opportunists. Many fear that more blood will flow given today's political atmosphere when polarization is deep, distrust in institutions high, and violence viral.

\n

The erosion of trust may be the most corrosive outcome of Kirk's killing. Violence thrives when faith in institutions collapses. For years, both the left and the right have undermined confidence in elections, courts, law enforcement and the media. When people view politics as illegitimate and opponents as existential threats, violence will be rationalized.

\n

"We can't solve our problems if we can't talk to each other," warns Jonathan Reiner, a physician to many members of Congress. His question is simple but profound: In today's US, can people still talk without shouting — or shooting?

\n

The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.
