\n\n\n\n

Chinese lawmakers began reviewing a draft amendment to the Law on Standard Spoken and Written Chinese Language to forge a strong sense of community for the nation and enhance cultural confidence.

\n

The draft revision to the law was submitted on Monday to the ongoing session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for its first reading.

\n

The use of national standard spoken and written Chinese language should be conducive to cultivating and promoting core socialist values, inheriting and developing fine Chinese culture and building a common spiritual home for the Chinese people, the draft said.

\n

The language law, which took effect in 2001, sets putonghua, or Mandarin, and simplified Chinese characters as the standard spoken and written forms of Chinese and China's official language.

\n

Luo Shugang, director of the Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee of the National People's Congress, said the national standard spoken and written Chinese language is formed through communication and exchanges among different ethnic groups. It is the basic element of Chinese culture and an important symbol of the country, just like the national flag and national anthem, he said.

\n

In the 24 years since the law has been in place, historic achievements have been made in popularizing the standard spoken and written language, with over 80 percent of the population now speaking Mandarin and more than 95 percent knowing and using simplified characters, he said.

\n

However, the popularization work remains uneven. The use of standard spoken and written Chinese language in public service, online spaces and foreign communication needs further regulation, and there are difficulties in keeping pace with advancements in informatization, digitization and artificial intelligence. Thus, amendments of the law are needed to solve such pressing issues, he said.

\n

The draft proposes strengthened regulations on language use in cyberspace, specifying that internet platforms operated by the government or providing public services must use the standard spoken and written Chinese language in accordance with national norms and standards.

\n

It also strengthens the protection of the right to learn and use the standard language, stipulating that "no organization or individual shall obstruct citizens from learning and using the standard spoken and written Chinese language."

\n

It is also stipulated that those who obstruct others from learning and using national standard language or violate the law in other ways could face public security administration penalties or criminal liability.

\n

Regarding usage rules, the draft revision standardizes the use of foreign languages, clarifying that for international exhibitions and conferences held within China where the use of foreign languages is necessary, the standard spoken and written Chinese language should be used simultaneously.

\n

The draft revision further refines regulations on language use in public service industries, public spaces and facilities, and online audiovisual programs.

Visually impaired boxing trainee Deng Xuemei (left) practices with volunteer Wang Xiao in Chongqing on Aug 31.

\n\n

In the boxing ring, 51-year-old Deng Xuemei reveled in the delivery of every jab and hook, her body glistening with sweat. Visually impaired, she relied on her other senses — now acutely heightened — to discern her opponent's position.

\n

Deng was part of a public welfare event that unfolded in Chongqing on Aug 31. Nineteen participants with partial vision donned boxing gear and attempted to break through their sensory limitations, discovering new joy in the sport.

\n

The temporary arena at Longfor Paradise Walk in Chongqing's College City was marked with lines to accommodate four pairs of people — each pair consisting of a partially sighted participant and a volunteer. They worked together to practice moves. A one-on-one match would come later.

\n

Two coaches gave instructions on how to focus the force of a punch, execute a hook and maintain balance.

\n

At first, Deng's punches were tentative as she sought to find a rhythm and adapt to the action. But she quickly adjusted to the sounds around her and became sharply accurate.

\n

"At first, I was really nervous and didn't know where to put my hands and feet," Deng said. "Thanks to the personal hands-on guidance from the professional coaches and volunteers, I gradually mastered the basic movements."

\n

Fighters were instructed to punch slowly at first, one punch at a time, and then gradually build up to a sequential flurry. Mistakes were rare — such as when a visually impaired participant accidentally hit a volunteer in the face. They were advised beforehand not to punch upward.

\n

"The key for us in boxing is to react quickly, depriving the opponent of time to assess the situation," Deng said. "Otherwise, you could really get killed on the defensive."

\n

After half an hour of practice, a brief match between two visually impaired contestants — without volunteer assistants — was arranged. Everyone got a turn.

\n

"After the practice, the match was particularly exhilarating," Deng said. "My opponent and I leaped into the fray and punched like we were fighting an enemy."

\n

She said her hands and feet were sore afterward.

\n

"It definitely feels different to running," she said.

\n

All the participants were members of the Chongqing branch of the national nonprofit charity program Running in the Dark.

\n

Established in Shanghai in 2016, the group supports partially sighted runners and has expanded to 27 branches nationwide. Some branches offer activities such as hiking, cycling and swimming.

\n

The Chongqing branch, created in October 2022, now has more than 200 partially sighted members and a volunteer base of more than 400 from diverse backgrounds.

\n

Wang Xiao, 35, joined the branch in 2023 and has supported Deng as a volunteer in various activities. They have a strong rapport.

\n

"I don't worry at all that Deng will punch me in the face," Wang said.

\n

Liu Yuxia, chair of the Chongqing association of persons with visual disabilities, praised the program's positive contributions.

\n

"Because of mobility challenges, the sports available to this community are limited. But fortunately, many compassionate organizations and individuals offer sports activities, allowing blind people to experience the fulfillment that sports bring."

\n

Lu Wei, 52, founder of the Chongqing branch of Running in the Dark, said the boxing event surpassed expectations.

\n

"Everyone seemed fully engaged and had a great time," he said.

\n

Several months ago, Lu came up with the idea of letting his branch members try boxing. A long-time runner, he began entering marathons 10 years ago. He served as the escort for Yan Wei, the first partially sighted runner from the Chinese mainland to finish the Boston Marathon, the world's oldest annual marathon and one of the top six major races globally.

\n

Under Lu's leadership, the Chongqing branch organized multiple activities and achieved many firsts. In November, for example, it promoted Running in the Dark's first Chinese literature classes. During the 2024 Shanghai Marathon, branch members Chen Hong, 51, and Lei Na, 41, became the first visually impaired couple in China to complete a 42.19-kilometer full marathon, finishing in 5 hours and 47 minutes.

\n

With regular training sessions once or twice a month at local sports fields, over 30 members have participated in marathons with the assistance of volunteer escorts.

\n

"They should have the opportunity to experience life and engage in new ways," Lu said. "It's an intrinsic human need."

\n

He added that while society's attention to the sight-impaired community is increasing, he hopes to see more rapid progress. He looks forward to the day when stereotypes are abandoned and support becomes more substantial.

\n

In the coming year, he plans to introduce kayaking and paddleboarding to the branch.

\n

According to the China Disabled Persons' Federation, the partially sighted population exceeded 17 million in China.

\n

The boxing event was organized with the help of Lan Xia, a volunteer and head of marketing for Chinese sporting goods brand Li-Ning in Chongqing. She led the brand's sponsorship of the event, whose shared goals were summed up by Lu:

\n

"We serve as their eyes, but they help us see from our souls. Each makes the other better. By removing the obstacles they face in sports participation, we hope to create close bonds."

Clay teapots made in Yu's workshop.

\n

Yu Dahua works on a pottery jar in his workshop in Yanshantou in Zhongxiang city, Hubei province.

\n

In his workshop in Yanshantou, an area of Zhongxiang city in Hubei province beside the Hanjiang River, Yu Dahua shapes a pottery vessel, his fingers coaxing the clay into a smooth form. Nearby, rows of rustic pots wait to be packed and sent across the country.

\n

For more than three decades, Yu has been molding more than just clay. He is the last master potter in Yanshantou, once a thriving hub whose abundant clay and firewood supported generations of artisans.

\n

The craft of earthenware here dates back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties (c.16th century-256 BC) and flourished for centuries. In the 1960s and 1970s, dozens of family-run kilns lined the area, producing pottery that was sold across the province.

\n

Yu embarked on his journey into pottery in the 1990s, when modernization had already pushed the local industry into decline.

\n

In 1990, he inherited the craft from his foster father and foster brother — both pottery craftsmen themselves. Beyond his enthusiasm about the art and natural talent, he also felt a responsibility to live up to his family's expectations.

\n

"What my foster father told me struck my heart," Yu recalled. "He said people wouldn't be able to find a pot like ours if our generation failed to carry it forward."

\n

That May, Yu built his first kiln. What followed was practice and perseverance for over three decades.

\n

Pottery making is a demanding art. The process involves more than a dozen steps, from selection and refining of clay to shaping, detailing, and firing — each done by a single person with patience, precision, and a readiness to accept failure.

\n

"Making a pot is not just about the technique. It is about experience and feelings," Yu said. "Knowing when the clay is ready and when the fire is right is the hardest part. That takes years of practice."

\n

A single kiln load, which can hold 300 to 600 pieces, takes at least 20 days to complete. The firing alone can last a whole night, with Yu keeping watch beside the flames.

\n

For him, firing is to open a "blind box". Warped and broken pieces scattered around his courtyard are reminders of the cost of mastery. Yet it is in failure that Yu often finds inspiration.

\n

The most satisfactory experience came when an early, high-temperature firing experiment failed and ruined most of the batch. "Still, two pieces came out with natural glazes — one chicken-fat yellow, the other sky-blue. I've kept them," he said. "That's when I saw hope. Even failure can create beauty."

\n

Over the years, Yu has refined his techniques and his designs, blending history with modern needs. While assisting a museum in the city of Jingmen, Hubei, in restoring cultural relics, he deepened his understanding of pottery's cultural roots and expanded his artistic vision.

\n

The market tells what people need. Combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary tastes, Yu began producing high-fired, unglazed teaware. "Customer feedback also pushed me to improve," he added. "I'd take notes, go back and fix it. That's how my pots become more delicate over time."

\n

Rooted in the ancient summer farming practices, Yanshantou teapots are prized for their rough charm, porous texture, and cooling properties. These are ideal for brewing and storing tea that stays refreshingly cold for days. Some customers also display them as garden decorations.

\n

Yu's handmade, unglazed teapots have gained popularity in the market. But production is seasonal.

\n

Due to the freezing conditions in winter, he works only nine months a year, producing up to 600 teapots a month and selling more than 5,000 annually. Today, his workshop is reaching customers through e-commerce platforms, offering a full range of rustic pottery, from teapots and crockery to vases and planters.

\n

Yu has a team of more than ten practitioners and another three apprentices. Still, the future of the craft weighs on him as it demands mastery of all processes and long-term practice.

\n

"I hope this ancient craft endures and thrives in the future," Yu said. "While keeping the old methods alive, we should also explore new forms and colors that suit modern tastes so that the tradition can continue to live and breathe."

To cooperate or to confront, this is the question for China-US relations.

\n

An article jointly written by Kurt Campbell, former deputy secretary of state in the previous US administration, and Rush Doshi, former deputy senior director for China affairs on the National Security Council, published in The New York Times on the weekend, calls for the current administration to confront China by maximizing the United States' own strength through its alliances.

\n

Only through partnerships can the US protect its shared industrial bases, technological edge and the ability to deter China, they argue. Claiming that it is not too late for the administration to build allied scale, despite the coercive approach it has adopted, they call for the administration to redirect its leverage toward the goal of balancing China's "overwhelming capacity", which will otherwise leave the US diminished and more isolated.

\n

It is not difficult to smell the stink of the Cold War mentality in the article. Both writers obviously consider China-US relations to be a matter of one power — the US — dominating the global order. They believe that the US must leverage its ties with its allies to counterbalance the rise of China. According to the authors, there is no third path — it is either the US or China that will dominate global affairs.

\n

But for China the situation is not simply an either-or scenario. In his telephone talk with US President Donald Trump on June 5, Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out that recalibrating the direction of the giant ship of China-US relations requires the two leaders to set the right course. For that, he said, it is particularly important to steer clear of various disturbances and disruptions.

\n

The path Campbell and Doshi urge the Trump administration to follow in handling China-US relations is undoubtedly a disturbance and disruption as it calls for the US and its allies to confront China.

\n

The world is not what it was. The Cold War mentality that pervades the article does not apply in this increasingly multipolar world.

\n

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, after meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on July 11 in Kuala Lumpur, told the media that from the perspective of human evolution and development, the interests of China and the US converge in a wide range of areas and there is huge space for both countries to cooperate.

\n

As Wang said, China and the US have the responsibility and ability to find a path on which both countries can get along with each other in a desirable manner. This is in the interests of both peoples and what the entire world expects of the development of China-US bilateral relations.

\n

Although the writers claimed in their article that their aim was not to contain China, which they believe is impossible, they look at China-US relations through the lens of the Thucydides Trap, believing that it is impossible for the US and China to cooperate for the well-being of humanity.

\n

It is more than necessary for those in Washington with such a mentality to consider carefully the four initiatives that China has proposed: the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative.

\n

The four initiatives seek to harvest the wisdom and strengths of all countries, both developed and developing ones, to address the deficits in global development, global security, civilization exchanges and global governance. From these four initiatives, it is not difficult to see that China does not pursue hegemony. Instead, it seeks a global synergy of resources to address the common challenges humanity is facing and desires the common development of all countries.

\n

China is not trying to challenge the status of the US. Rather it seeks to cooperate as much as possible with the US to create a fairer and more just world order, which will better facilitate global development and world peace.

\n

If those politicians in Washington who are afraid that the US may lose its hegemonic status with China's rise could be broad-minded enough to look at China as one of the major poles in a multipolar world and seek cooperation instead of confrontation with it, the world would be a much better place for all countries and peoples.

President Xi Jinping has proposed the Global Governance Initiative at a critical moment in history — at a time when the international system is unable to manage global challenges, from climate change and pandemics to economic instability and geopolitical tensions.

\n

Given the grave challenges the world faces today, the GGI is not just a diplomatic gesture, but the best way to ease the strain the global system is under, and build a more just, inclusive and effective framework for international cooperation.

\n

The GGI is built on five core principles. The first is sovereign equality, under which every country, regardless of size, strength and wealth, should have an equal voice in global decision-making and get a fair share of the benefits of global cooperation.

\n

The second is international rule of law, which is needed to ensure global governance is guided by universally recognized norms and laws, not selective interpretations or double standards.

\n

The third is multilateralism, which would promote dialogue and cooperation among countries, and oppose unilateralism and bloc-based confrontation.

\n

It is followed by a people-centric approach, under which people's well-being and sustainable development takes precedence over geopolitical competition.

\n

And the last is a focus on real actions, which would make sure governance delivers tangible outcomes, instead of being mired in rhetoric or symbolic gestures.

\n

Unlike these principles, the West-led global governance mechanisms often fall short on fairness, accountability and inclusivity, because they have been shaped by a hierarchy that privileges powerful countries, and oftentimes sidelines smaller or less-influential states.

\n

This imbalance is further exacerbated by the punitive measures — sanctions, economic coercion and political isolation — taken by powerful countries against those that do not align with Western interests. Although the West often justifies such measures under the guise of "rules" or "values", the application of these rules is inconsistent. Allies of the West are shielded from scrutiny, while non-aligned countries face disproportionate consequences.

\n

This system is rooted in the West's control over key international institutions. Veto powers, financial dominance, and structural advantages allow Western powers to bend global rules to serve their selfish interests. In fact, the impunity with which Western powers militarily intervene in other countries' internal affairs, cause financial crises, and violate human rights undermines the legitimacy of global governance.

\n

It's time for the world to correct these distortions by reaffirming the principle that all countries, big or small, rich or poor, should be equal participants in shaping global outcomes. Only through genuine inclusivity can the international system act fairly, maintain global stability, and promote shared development.

\n

Instead of being an isolated proposal, the GGI is part of a broader effort by China to promote global cooperation and reform. Beijing recognizes that the current world order, dominated by a narrow circle of wealthy states, no longer reflects the realities of a multipolar world and thus should be reformed to ensure emerging economies and developing countries play their due roles in shaping international norms and institutions.

\n

The Global South, represented to an extent by BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, is advocating for a global governance system that treats all countries equally, and seeking to help build a system rooted in sovereign equality, mutual respect and inclusive decision-making. The Global South's goal is not to replace one bloc with another, but to improve global governance to reflect the realities of a multipolar world.

\n

Through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Security Initiative, China has emphasized the importance of shared benefits, sovereign equality and respect for different development paths. The GGI upholds this principle, positioning China as a champion of inclusive multilateralism.

\n

The GGI is both a critique of the existing system and a constructive alternative. It challenges the selective and often coercive practices of Western-led governance, while proposing a model grounded in cooperation, international law and sovereign equality. By advocating reforms that align global governance with fairness and inclusivity, China aims to reform the international order to better serve the collective interests of the Global South and the broader global community.

\n

The GGI is a call to move beyond the Cold War mentality and protectionism so as to reform the global governance system, so that it reflects the interconnected realities of the 21st century.

\n

President Xi's proposal has drawn global attention, with many recognizing the urgent need to reform the global governance system. The recent SCO Summit in Tianjin, where the GGI was proposed, underscores the growing importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges.

\n

We have reached a historical inflection point. Problems like climate change, pandemics, inequality and conflicts that we face today are too complex and interconnected for any one country to solve. By upholding and updating the rules of cooperation, in order to meet today's realities, the GGI is a timely proposal to update the rules of cooperation instead of an attempt to create a "new world governance mechanism" — and thus should be welcomed and implemented.

\n

The views don't necessarily reflect those of China Daily.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has overhauled his Cabinet following the resignation of his deputy on Friday, but the revamp may not satisfy voters from the party's far left and the north of England, experts have warned.

\n

The reshuffle was triggered by the departure of Angela Rayner — the UK's deputy prime minister, its housing minister, and deputy leader of the ruling Labour Party — after she admitted not paying 40,000 pounds ($54,000) of tax due after she bought her second home.

\n

Her resignation was an excruciatingly embarrassing moment for the government, which had been in office for little more than a year.

\n

Besides, the scandal will likely cause the most damage to the government because Rayner was a darling of the party's hard left, having come from a staunchly working-class background and having overcome the challenges of teenage motherhood. She had thousands of loyal supporters from similar backgrounds who may now take their votes elsewhere.

\n

Concern over balance

\n

As Labour Party lawmakers began the process of choosing her replacement as deputy party leader, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham told Sky News he fears her departure will bolster a London-centric, center-right party elite.

\n

"I am concerned about the balance, … we need to use the deputy leadership contest to discuss some of these things," he said.

\n

Within the Cabinet, David Lammy has been appointed to Rayner's role as deputy prime minister, Yvette Cooper has been reassigned from home secretary to Lammy's former position as foreign minister, and Shabana Mahmood has been named home secretary.

Whoever ends up as deputy leader of the center-left party will face a huge challenge from the far-right Reform UK party, which is riding high in opinion polls because of widespread unhappiness about the number of migrants crossing the border. And it will face a challenge from the far left, with voters disillusioned about Rayner's exit likely to be tempted by a new, as yet unnamed, party being created by former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

\n

He told Sky News: "There's some really bad moves they've done in the past 12 months. They haven't done much to redistribute wealth. They haven't done much to empower people. And indeed, the public cynicism of this government is pretty deep."

\n

And that cynicism was evident when Christina McAnea, general secretary of Unison, the UK's largest trade union by membership size, said she feared Rayner's departure would lead to a watering down of the Employment Rights Bill, which aims to protect against unfair dismissal and ban zero-hours contracts.

\n

"We will do everything we can to make sure this is not watered down," the BBC quoted her as saying. "We're expecting a clear timetable, and if that doesn't happen, there will be some very, very unhappy trade union leaders around, including me."

\n

Labour Party lawmaker Emily Thornberry, who is planning to run for deputy leader, said the threat from Nigel Farage's Reform UK is, however, the main challenge.

\n

"We will have in the next election the biggest fight of our lives coming against Farage," Sky News quoted her as saying.

\n

Defense Secretary John Healey told the BBC the government will undoubtedly miss Rayner because "she's been an inspiration to many, particularly working-class women", but that Starmer's "clear, swift, fair action" has delivered a "good team "capable of meeting the challenges.

A doctor of the 27th batch of the Chinese medical team to Benin examines a patient at the Mono and Couffo Departmental Hospital Center in Lokossa, Benin, on Monday.

\n

When Antoine Roger Lokongo returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo after nearly 20 years in Europe and China, he brought back not only academic credentials but also a conviction that Africa could learn from China's resilience in advancing human rights through development.

\n

"My journey has been shaped by two worlds," said Lokongo, director of the department of international relations at Joseph Kasa-Vubu University in DR Congo.

\n

After spending 18 years in England, he moved to China to pursue a doctorate at Peking University. There, he first studied the Chinese language, completed his research and graduated in 2015 before heading home with a determination to contribute to his country's growth.

\n

Speaking at the first China-Africa Human Rights Seminar in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, late last month, Lokongo reflected on the contradictions of history. He recalled how former United States president Joe Biden once visited an Angolan museum, where Africans were baptized before being forced onto slave ships.

\n

"Baptism means liberation, yet those newly baptized were put into bondage," he said. "That contradiction is symbolic of today, where Western powers preach human rights while perpetuating new forms of control."

\n

For Lokongo, the memory of that contradiction — liberation preached, yet bondage imposed — illustrates why many Africans remain skeptical of Western narratives on human rights.

\n

By contrast, he said, China presents Africa with a different model. "China has never colonized any African country," he said. "It offers partnership grounded in solidarity, experience-sharing and win-win cooperation."

\n

Lokongo was among dozens of African voices gathered for the seminar, where officials and experts discussed how the continent could redefine human rights in ways that reflect its own priorities. For them, the debate was not about whether Africa needs human rights — but how human rights are achieved.

\n

Crispin Kugiza Kaheru, a member of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, said Africa had long been subjected to one-sided interpretations.

\n

"For too many years, human rights have been weaponized," he said. "They've been used to justify sanctions, embargoes and interference in sovereign matters."

\n

Kaheru said China offered a different lens, one that ties rights to dignity through development.

\n

"You can talk about modernization and still keep your identity, your culture, your norms. You don't have to import cultures to thrive," he said. He praised China's people-centered approach, which emphasizes subsistence and livelihoods rather than abstract ideals.

\n

This was echoed by Mohamed El Hacen Lebatt, former foreign minister of Mauritania, who said Africa's most urgent rights are tied to daily needs, development, food, healthcare, education and access to technology. "The right to development is the human right Africa cannot ignore," he said.

\n

While comparing partners, he pointed to China's record of development, for instance, building of airports, hospitals and universities across the continent. "We compare the deeds, and China has delivered. While Africa remains open to all partnerships, China is the most helpful, most decisive and most efficient in supporting Africa."

\n

History, several speakers said, continues to shape today's choices. Boniface Lezona, deputy director of the National Human Rights Commission of the Republic of Congo, said China, like Africa, had endured colonization and emerged stronger.

\n

"With China, we are trying to share the same destiny on the right of development," he said. "We take China as a leader because we have a common history and we want to share our common future together."

\n

Mutual respect

\n

Fredrick Mutesa, secretary-general of the Zambia-China Friendship Association, warned of a "heightened campaign to discredit and undermine" China-Africa ties by Western governments. Yet, he said, China's engagement through infrastructure, mining and green development is "unlocking the potential of the African continent", giving it a rare chance to renegotiate its place in the international order on the basis of mutual respect and noninterference.

\n

"The right to development is the most critical human right for Africa today, and China is at the forefront of helping us realize it," Mutesa said.

\n

Jeddi Mowbray Armah, deputy minister for legal affairs at Liberia's Foreign Ministry, said China's human rights philosophy is rooted in practicality. He dismissed claims that China's engagement is political activism, calling it "a strategic partner" whose contributions are visible in development, education, food security and aid.

\n

Armah also drew attention to the cultural dimension of rights. "Universality is not uniformity. Western definitions often come with impositions, but China's approach recognizes cultural diversity in how human rights are realized," he said.

\n

"China believes that once development is taken care of, then human rights can be met. For the West, human rights are more about ideals and definitions. For China, it is about helping people meet their daily needs."

\n

The discussions highlighted that Africa's engagement with China extends beyond trade and infrastructure. It is also about redefining human rights through a lens that ties dignity to development.

\n

A consensus of the seminar affirmed that development is essential to improving the well-being of the people and advancing human dignity.

Tighter US visa crackdowns threaten to slow South Korea's investments in the country, as companies face rising costs and the growing hesitancy of technical staff to return, analysts warn.

\n

Concerns mounted after United States immigration authorities detained about 300 South Korean nationals on Thursday during a raid at the site of a Hyundai-LG Energy Solution electric vehicle battery plant in the southern state of Georgia.

\n

The crackdown is likely to delay construction of the $6.3 billion factory — expected to create 8,500 jobs — as work stalls and personnel return to South Korea, said Yang Jun-sok, an economics professor at the Catholic University of Korea in Seoul.

\n

"South Korean people have been exasperated with what is perceived as bullying by the US to force investment in the US," Yang said. "And with the Hyundai incident, more people are likely to think that dealing with the US is 'damned if you do, and damned if you don't'."

\n

Hyundai has advised its employees to postpone business trips to the US, Yonhap News Agency reported.

\n

LG Energy Solution said it has suspended most business travel to the US and advised staff already abroad to either return home immediately or wait at their accommodations.

\n

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that all foreign companies should respect US immigration laws and hire and train US workers.

\n

South Korea has pledged $350 billion in US investments as part of a tariff deal. Separately, the Federation of Korean Industries said last month that South Korean companies plan to invest about $150 billion in the US.

\n

\n

To send staff to US construction sites, South Korean companies rely on the H-1B visa for foreign specialists. But with just 85,000 visas issued annually worldwide through a random lottery, access remains limited.

\n

Seoul has been pressing Washington to create up to 15,000 E-4 visas for highly skilled professionals, but has yet to gain any progress.

\n

Park Chong-hoon, head of research at Standard Chartered Bank in Seoul, said the South Korean government's immediate priority should be negotiating with the US to facilitate visa issuance for South Korean specialists, as it will take time to hire and train US personnel.

\n

"At the GDP level, US labor is going to be at least 2.5 times more expensive than South Korean workers," he said, adding that local employees lack on-site experience and technical knowledge.

\n

Although the crackdown is unlikely to affect South Korean companies' existing investment commitments in the US, Park said the pace of implementation will depend heavily on US actions.

\n

In an interview with Yonhap, Kim Pil-soo, an automotive engineering professor at Daelim University, said the incident was "humiliating" and advised companies to reassess their US strategies, citing the shortage of skilled workers, high labor costs and powerful unions.

Driven by rapid growth in wind, solar, hydro and nuclear power, nonfossil energy sources are projected to account for approximately 35 percent of China's total energy consumption by 2035, and rise to around 80 percent by 2060, according to a new industry report.

\n

The "China Energy Outlook 2025-2060" report, released by China Energy Investment Corp (CHN Energy) on Monday, forecasts a continued green and low-carbon transition in China's energy mix, shifting away from the current coal-dominated era toward a more diversified landscape.

\n

CHN Energy is the country's largest coal-fired power generator by capacity.

\n

China's energy-related carbon emissions are expected to peak before 2030, within a range of 11.4-11.6 billion metric tons, said Sun Baodong, chairman of CHN Energy Technology and Economics Research Institute.

\n

Emissions are expected to decline steadily during the 16th Five-Year Plan period (2031-35), with relatively low carbon emissions per unit of GDP, a projected reduction of over 45 percent by 2035 compared to 2020 levels, he said.

\n

Sun also emphasized the importance of energy security for China's modernization, advocating for a gradual increase in the country's energy self-sufficiency rate.

\n

The report projects that China's primary energy self-sufficiency rate will steadily increase from the current level of around 80 percent, exceeding 90 percent by around 2045, achieving a high degree of energy independence.

\n

Nonfossil energy sources are expected to play an increasingly critical role in ensuring energy supply security, becoming the primary driver of energy growth in the near and medium term, and ultimately replacing fossil fuels in the long term, it said.

\n

Industry experts believe while the transition to renewables is crucial for decarbonization, the focus on energy security also highlights the importance of maintaining a stable and reliable energy supply.

\n

"China's approach balances environmental goals with the need to ensure uninterrupted economic growth," said Lin Boqiang, head of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University.

\n

"This ambition reflects a long-term strategic vision to secure its energy future and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers," he said.

\n

"Amid global energy market fluctuations, diversifying the energy mix and prioritizing domestic production are key strategies to mitigate these risks."

\n

According to the report, overall energy consumption is expected to grow steadily over the next decade, reaching 7.1-7.2 billion tons of standard coal equivalent around 2035, representing a roughly 20 percent increase from current levels.

\n

While oil consumption has currently plateaued at 730-750 million tons, the report projects a decline to around 700 million tons by 2030, driven by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and a gradual saturation of the petrochemical industry.

\n

Natural gas is expected to play a transitional role in the energy system's transformation and the achievement of China's "dual-carbon" goals, with significant growth potential. Consumption is projected to peak at 590-600 billion cubic meters by around 2035, it said.

\n

Electricity demand is forecast to maintain long-term growth, fueled by economic and social development and the increasing electrification of end-use sectors.

\n

The report estimates overall electricity consumption average annual growth rates of approximately 4.5 percent and 2.9 percent during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30) and 16th Five-Year Plan period, respectively, reaching 13.3 trillion kWh by 2030 and 15.3 trillion kWh by 2035.

\n

Overall electricity consumption is expected to peak between 2050 and 2060, within a range of 17.8-18.1 trillion kWh, it said.

\n

Coal consumption is expected to remain high in the short term, driven by demand from the power generation and chemical industries, peaking at 4.95-5.1 billion tons during the early to mid-15th Five-Year Plan period, it said.

\n

Consumption of coal is projected to remain above 4.6 billion tons by 2035. After peaking, domestic coal production capacity is expected to gradually contract as older mines are retired. However, the report anticipates that overall coal supply and demand will remain largely balanced over the next two decades.

Women from the Miao ethnic group in Liuzhi special district in Guizhou province don their ethnic costumes to attend a gathering in May.

\n

Twenty eight years ago, John Gjestrum, a Norwegian who was a board member of the International Committee of Museology, traveled to Liuzhi special district in Guizhou province to plant a tree that marked the start of the Sino-Norwegian Friendship Trees.

\n

As editor-in-chief of Nordisk Museologi, he went there to guide the building of the Liuzhi Suojia Miao ethnic ecomuseum in Suojia town. Earlier, in October 1997, the heads of State of China and Norway witnessed a signing ceremony in Beijing that would lead to the establishment of the first ecomuseum in China.

\n

In 1997, construction of the Suojia Ecomuseum Information Center started with the aid of 880,000 Norwegian kroner ($87,950) from the Norwegian government for the construction of the venue and the collection of physical objects. On Oct 31, 1998, the ecomuseum officially opened to the public.

\n

As the first ecomuseum in Asia, the Suojia Miao Community is located in Longjia village at an average altitude of 2,000 meters and some 42 kilometers north of Liuzhi. Situated in high mountains, its natural conditions were extremely challenging and water sources were scarce.

\n

In the neighboring 12 villages, there resides an ancient and mysterious branch of the Miao ethnic group — the Qingmiao branch, also known as the Longhorn Miao branch, with some 5,000 residents. Before the establishment of the ecomuseum, they lived in extremely harsh conditions and were regarded as a living fossil of pre-industrial life.

\n

The Longhorn Miao village was built against the mountains with earthen walls and thatched cottages. With a simple way of life, the villagers worked from sunrise to sunset, spun and wove fabrics, waxed embroidery and used needles and threads to sew beautiful clothes and skirts.

\n

The ecomuseum aims to keep a record of their social structure, housing, dressing habits, production, lifestyles, music and dance, displaying their gradual integration with the outside world.

\n

Unlike a traditional museum, an ecomuseum aims to record a region's community, residents, heritages, cultural memory and public knowledge, instead of the buildings, collections, scientific knowledge and research.

\n

The ecomuseum showcased China's gradual understanding of the importance of ecological preservation, said Yin Shigang, Party secretary of the project department of China Railway No 4 Engineering Group in building the Anshun-Panzhou section of Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, which traverses Liuzhi.

\n

Liuzhi, sitting on the watershed of the Yangtze River and the Pearl River water systems, is a picturesque place with high mountains and more than 40 rivers and streams.

\n

Liu Qiang, head of Liuzhi district government, said earlier this year that the district should continuously optimize its ecological environment.

\n

Protecting the local environment has thus become a top priority while constructing the expressway, Yin said.

\n

Inside Yongfeng village on the banks of Sancha River near his project department, the terraced fields are lush green and the main piers of the Xujiawan Bridge stand on both banks, forming a beautiful ecological picture, Yin said.

\n

"During our construction work, we tried our best to maintain the original natural terrain and set up retaining walls and other engineering structures in areas with steep slopes and poor geological conditions to bolster their safety and stability, reducing the risk of soil erosion and minimizing the impact of construction on the environment," he said.

\n

On both sides of the Xujiawan Bridge are terraced fields for farmers, which are a main source of income for the villagers, and Yin's project department has thought of scientific means to reduce damage to young crops in the construction area.

\n

He said as the natural vegetation in Guizhou is dense, with large mountains, deep ditches and rugged roads, there is a severe shortage of basic farmland, and they need to stick to strict forest protection.

\n

"As we are building an expressway, we need to set up a prefabrication yard to precast beams, which may occupy some 7 hectares of land traditionally," Yin recalled. "But following the principle that 'lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets', we finally decided to increase investment and build our smart beam yard in the mountains."

\n

This not only helped reduce the land by nearly half, but also minimized the damage to the ecological environment, he added.

\n

For Yin from CREC4 Fourth Engineering, his life during the past two years in building the expressway has been fruitful and rewarding.

\n

He worked with over 2,400 employees, including 142 local ethnic minority workers who are glad to have the motorway in their hometown.

\n

During traditional Miao festivals, the villagers of Yongfeng often invited Yin's colleagues to participate in cultural activities, enjoying art performances and Miao dances, expressing their sincere thanks to the builders with long-table banquets.

\n

"The CREC4 employees have enabled our villagers to learn skills and steadily increase their income at their doorsteps. From building roads and helping impoverished students, they have truly built a bridge of friendship, injecting strong momentum into the rural vitalization in Longhe," said Wang Yongyue, Party secretary of Longhe town, adding that "the locals have come to recognize this".

Radiant Stars: Lingjiatan Culture Photo Exhibition from Anhui, China, attracts visitors in Dhaka, on Aug 25.

\n

DHAKA — Bangladeshis have been captivated by the photo exhibition, Radiant Stars: Lingjiatan Culture Photo Exhibition from Anhui, China, inspiring greater interest in Chinese culture and encouraging deeper cultural exchanges.

\n

Located in Ma'anshan city in East China's Anhui province, Lingjiatan is a heritage site dating back some 5,300 to 5,800 years. Since it was discovered in 1985, more than 3,000 pieces of exquisite relics, such as jade wares, stone artifacts and potteries, have been unearthed from the site.

\n

The exhibition features 50 display panels marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh, alongside 38 sets of jade replicas — such as eagles, dragons, and figurines, presenting a comprehensive picture of the rich historical heritage and profound cultural significance of the Lingjiatan site.

\n

"I love Chinese culture and Chinese songs, so I am very happy that the exhibition has come to this national museum," says Md Rubel Haque, a visitor. "I have learned a lot about Chinese culture from this exhibition, and we are enjoying discovering and appreciating it."

\n

Sarwar Alam, a student from Tongi, on the outskirts of Dhaka, describes the exhibition as thrilling and impressive.

\n

"This is a great opportunity for us to learn about China's traditions and culture," Sarwar says, expressing hope that more exhibitions will be organized.

\n

Mazharul Islam, a student learning Chinese at North South University, visited the exhibition with his teachers and parents.

\n

Noting that the profound heritage of Chinese culture strongly resonates with Bangladeshi culture, he says: "Through the rich archaeological displays, artifact images and replicas, we gain insight into China's civilization more than 5,000 years ago, and about the wisdom of Chinese ancestors in philosophy, art and social organization."

\n

"In my view, to truly understand a nation, one must study its cultural background and education," says Mazharul, adding that the Chinese people are not only friendly and lovely, but also possess remarkable business acumen and ideas that should be learned by Bangladesh. "That is why we gather here: to exchange and learn, to draw knowledge and inspiration together."

\n

During the opening ceremony on Aug 25, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to Bangladesh's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of Water Resources, said the Lingjiatan jade figurines "whisper across 5,000 years that humanity is one family, bound by creativity and community."

\n

She added, "For Bangladesh, the Lingjiatan exhibition resonates deeply. It mirrors our own civilizational journey in pursuit of meaning, order, and community."

Italy's Jannik Sinner (right) congratulates Spain's Carlos Alcaraz on winning the US Open men's singles final on Sunday.

\n\n

NEW YORK — When Jannik Sinner walked off the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium after falling 6-2, 3-6,6-1, 6-4 to Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's US Open final, more than just a match had ended.

\n

The 24-year-old Italian's 65-week reign as world No 1 was over, his 27-match winning streak on hard courts at the Grand Slam level had snapped, and his bid to defend his 2024 US Open title had failed.

\n

Yet, in the immediate aftermath of defeat, Sinner displayed the maturity that has defined his rise to tennis' summit.

\n

"First of all, I would like to start with Carlos and the whole team, you're doing amazing, congrats...it's a great moment," he said during the trophy ceremony, gracious even amid the ruins of his championship dreams.

\n

The loss means that Roger Federer's consecutive wins between 2004 and 2008 remain the last successful men's singles title defense at the US Open.

\n

For Sinner, it concluded a remarkable season that saw him reach all four Grand Slam finals, winning two and losing two.

\n

His fifth meeting of the season with Alcaraz — their third Grand Slam final of 2025 — shifted their rivalry firmly in the Spaniard's favor, with the head-to-head now standing at 10-5 for Alcaraz.

\n

But Sinner's post-match analysis revealed a player already looking ahead, rather than dwelling on what was lost.

\n

"He has improved. I felt like he was a bit cleaner today," Sinner said in his news conference, offering a frank assessment without excuses.

\n

"I give lots of credit to him, because he handled the situation better than I did.

\n

"He played better than me today."

\n

Perhaps most tellingly, the Italian identified his own areas for improvement with surgical precision and shared them candidly.

\n

"Well, I was very predictable today," he said.

\n

"Now it's going to be on me if I want to make changes or not ... to try to be a bit more unpredictable as a player, because I think that's what I have to do, trying to become a better tennis player."

\n

The loss of his No 1 ranking after 65 weeks atop the game represents new territory for Sinner, but he embraced the change with characteristic composure.

\n

"Something new is that, now, I'm not No 1 anymore, so you know, it also changes a little bit that you chase. It's different. Then we see," he said.

\n

Despite the disappointment, Sinner maintained perspective on his extraordinary year.

\n

"I'm still proud of myself, about the season I'm playing, and making four Grand Slam finals of the year," he said.

\n

"You know, two Grand Slams won, two times lost in the final, it's incredible results, no?"

\n

As he thanked his team — "for supporting me, for understanding me, for working hard — we all know how much dedication we put in" — Sinner embodied the champion's mindset that transcends any single result.

\n

His reign as No 1 may have ended, but his championship character remained intact.

China's top securities regulator vowed over the weekend to step up law-based supervision and make strong efforts to advance high-quality capital market development, following the announcement that its former chairman is under investigation.

\n

Financial experts said the pledge reflects the country's firm determination to address the remaining structural challenges in the capital market to foster steady, long-lasting market growth, with greater fairness and transparency at the core.

\n

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Supervisory Commission announced on Saturday that Yi Huiman, former chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, is under investigation for suspected severe violations of discipline and laws.

\n

The CSRC said in a statement on Saturday that it firmly supports the move of the country's top anti-corruption watchdogs and pledged to make a resolute push to win the tough battle against corruption, strengthen oversight of public power and curb new, hidden forms of graft, following a meeting to convey the decision to conduct the investigation.

\n

Presided over by CSRC Chairman Wu Qing, who took over for Yi in February last year, the meeting vowed to strengthen law-based supervision, effectively guard against risks, and vigorously promote high-quality capital market development to better serve China's economic recovery and modernization drive.

\n

Yi, 61, a native of Zhejiang province, currently serves as the deputy director of the Committee on Economic Affairs of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top political advisory body.

\n

Before that, Yi served as chairman of the CSRC from January 2019 to February 2024, after working in China's banking system for decades.

\n

During his five-year tenure, the number of A-share listed companies rose by about 1,700, according to financial media outlet Yicai. Over the same period, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell below the 3,000-point threshold roughly 20 times by the measurement of closing price, data from market tracker Wind Info showed.

\n

Tian Xuan, president of Tsinghua University's National Institute of Financial Research and associate dean of Tsinghua University's PBC School of Finance, said that further improving fundamental institutions is key to strengthening the internal stability and sustainable momentum of the A-share market.

\n

"After a rapid rise, the market has seen a notable correction, reflecting subtle shifts in investor expectations and sentiment. The development also points to the inherent volatility and uncertainty facing the market, as well as lingering structural challenges yet to be fully resolved," Tian said.

\n

Tian underlined the need to improve expectation management, enhance policy transparency and predictability and send timely positive signals to stabilize investor sentiment, while enforcing stricter information disclosure and refining the delisting mechanism to raise quality of listed companies.

\n

China ramped up efforts to intensify the crackdown on securities violations and strengthen investor protection as it released a high-level guideline in April last year, rolling out nine measures to promote the high-quality development of the capital market.

\n

As the latest step to strengthen the market, the CSRC proposed the first overhaul in 12 years of the rules on mutual fund sales commissions on Friday, aiming to sharply reduce investor costs and encourage long-term holdings.

\n

Liu Jipeng, a senior expert on the capital markets and a professor at China University of Political Science and Law, said that further closing regulatory gaps to safeguard market fairness and investor interest will hold the key to future capital market reforms and steady market growth.

\n

"A slow bull trend has taken shape. The goal should be making it steady and long-lasting so that the capital market can serve as a platform for common prosperity, where the majority of investors can share returns, rather than only a few getting rich overnight," Liu said.

\n

Richard Tang, an equity research analyst for Asia at Swiss wealth management group Julius Baer, said the A-share market is far from a bubble despite a strong catch-up in performance.

\n

"Valuation remains reasonable, and liquidity indicators suggest that market activity has increased but is not overheated. We expect further upside," Tang said.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba addresses a press conference where he announced his decision to resign, on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan.

\n

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced on Sunday that he will step down as the head of the Liberal Democratic Party, amid growing calls for him to take responsibility for the party-led ruling coalition's election setback in both houses of parliament.

\n

Addressing a news conference at the prime minister's office in Tokyo, Ishiba said he has "made the painful decision to resign despite still having unfinished tasks", emphasizing that the LDP must undergo genuine renewal and remain a tolerant and inclusive force.

\n

He added that he would not stand as a candidate in the expected LDP leadership election triggered by his resignation.

\n

Ishiba's announcement came a day before the LDP was scheduled to decide whether to hold an early party leadership election, which would essentially be demanding his resignation, according to Japanese media platform Nikkei Asia.

\n

It also followed a formal agreement reached on Thursday with the administration of United States President Donald Trump on 15 percent reciprocal tariffs on Japanese exports to the US.

\n

At Sunday's news conference, Ishiba said he had long considered tariff negotiations with the US a responsibility of his administration. With the signing of a memorandum of understanding last week, Ishiba said the negotiations reached a milestone, which made him decide to make way for his successor.

\n

In September 2024, Ishiba was elected president of the LDP for a term of three years. In October last year, the LDP and its junior coalition partner, the Komeito, lost their majority in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the National Diet of Japan. In July this year, the ruling coalition also lost its majority in the House of Councillors, or the upper house.

\n

In postwar Japan, the head of the LDP — the country's dominant political force since the party's founding in 1955 — has almost always become the prime minister, because the party commands the largest share of seats in the Diet. When an LDP president resigns or is replaced, the post of prime minister typically changes hands as well.

\n

According to the LDP's rules, a new leadership election can be held before the incumbent president's term expires. A majority of LDP members in the Diet and a majority of representatives in the LDP's prefectural branches can jointly request an election for a new president.

\n

Following Ishiba's formal resignation announcement, the LDP is expected to hold an extraordinary executive meeting on Monday morning, at which it will likely decide to cancel the submission of documents for an early party leadership election, according to TBS News, a commercial broadcasting company based in Tokyo.

\n

The Associated Press reported that the LDP is expected to set a date for a party leadership election, likely to be held in early October.

Xinhua contributed to this story.

The cafe, called Sign Planet, was initiated by Wang Han, president of the Hunan Foundation for Disabled Persons and a well-known host from Hunan Television, along with his friends. It follows a collaborative business model in which the community provides the venue, social organizations offer training and social workers participate.

\n

"If we wish for people with hearing disabilities in China to have equitable access to public cultural resources, everyone must consciously empathize with them," Wang said. "The first step is to make them visible — to allow more people to see their struggles and efforts, to witness their love for life, their aspirations for a better future, their desire for success, and their resilience to face challenges."

\n

He added that for people with disabilities, true happiness comes from equal employment opportunities, learning and access to public cultural resources.

\n

"Education and employment are the most important, because economic independence through employment leads to independence in many other aspects. That's why we believe creating employment opportunities is crucial," Wang said.

\n

To support the effort, the organizers invited an international coffee competition judge from Shenzhen, Guangdong province, to train the baristas for about a week.

\n

The local community has also rallied around the project. Wang said the original monthly rent for the cafe was between 5,000 and 6,000 yuan ($700 to $840), but the landlord reduced it to 1,000 yuan in recognition of its mission to support employment for people with disabilities.

\n

Wang noted that hearing-impaired youth are well-suited for such work, as they have full physical mobility, strong focus and learn quickly.

\n

One of the baristas, Qu Yuxian, joined the shop after graduating from university through a college recommendation. Qu and her colleagues received training in coffee preparation and hand-brewing techniques, with sign language interpreters assisting.

\n

At first, workers communicated with customers through handwritten notes, which proved inefficient during busy hours. Volunteers later began helping with operations, cleaning and learning basic sign language to ease communication.

\n

Qu said she and her colleagues felt immense warmth and gained a sense of purpose in their work. She recalled moments when customers ordered an Americano or latte using sign language — encounters that inspired her to teach them a few simple gestures in return.

\n

To attract more customers, the cafe hosts concerts every weekend, inviting people with disabilities to perform. The events have drawn large crowds and strengthened community engagement.

\n

For Qu, the cafe is more than a workplace. It provides opportunities for the hearing impaired and promotes an inclusive environment. She also hopes to create cultural products that incorporate sign language elements to draw in more customers and promote sign language culture.

\n

"I want to be a more professional and excellent barista. I even want to take part in barista competitions and show someone the ropes in the future," she said. "The coffee shop provides us with chances, and that's why we hope to grow with it."

China is planning a kinetic impact demonstration mission to test the feasibility of defending Earth against potentially hazardous asteroids, a senior space scientist revealed at an international conference on Friday.

\n

Speaking at the opening of the third International Deep Space Exploration Conference (Tiandu Forum) in Hefei, Anhui province, Wu Weiren, chief designer of China's lunar exploration program and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, gave a comprehensive overview of the country's asteroid exploration and defense strategy.

\n

Wu said the mission will follow a "fly-along-impact-fly-along" model, involving both an observer and an impactor spacecraft. The observer will arrive first to conduct close-up surveys of the target asteroid, collecting detailed physical parameters. The impactor will then strike the asteroid at a distance of 10 million kilometers from Earth at high speed, while both spacecraft, together with ground- and space-based assets, record the event using advanced imaging technologies to precisely assess the results.

\n

The strike is expected to alter the asteroid's orbit by 3 to 5 centimeters, ensuring that it will not pose a collision threat to Earth for at least several decades to 100 years.

\n

"Asteroids number in the billions in our solar system, and they are often called 'fossils' of its formation and evolution," Wu said. "While rich in metals such as iron, nickel and platinum group elements, as well as water ice, near-Earth asteroids are also considered one of the top existential threats to humanity."

\n

Research indicates that near-Earth objects with diameters exceeding 140 meters strike the Earth on average every 11,000 years. Although such impacts are rare, they can have catastrophic consequences, with their severity closely correlated to the asteroid's size. Scientists generally accept that an impact 66 million years ago caused the extinction of around 75 percent of global species, including the dinosaurs.

\n

At the end of last year, a near-Earth asteroid named 2024 YR4, with a diameter ranging from 40 to 90 meters, drew global attention as the probability of it colliding with Earth in 2032 once reached as high as 3.1 percent. However, as more observational data became available, scientists confirmed that 2024 YR4 would not collide with Earth, though the probability of it impacting the moon in 2032 remains at 4.3 percent.

\n

In recent years, the China National Space Administration has initiated projects on near-Earth asteroid exploration and defense, with plans to establish a national defense system against small celestial bodies. On May 29, China's Tianwen 2 probe was launched with the dual mission of collecting samples from near-Earth asteroid 2016 HO3 and later conducting a fly-along study of main-belt comet 311P.

\n

Wu said Chinese scientists envision a relatively complete defense system, which would provide early warnings of collisions, in-orbit responses and system-level preparedness. The plan includes building an integrated space-ground monitoring and alert network capable of cataloging asteroids, issuing risk assessments and providing early warnings.

\n

On the operational side, the strategy emphasizes "kinetic impact as the primary method, complemented by multiple technologies". A variety of spacecraft would be developed to evaluate or deal with threatening asteroids, supported by a task library of defense missions tailored to different risk scenarios.

\n

"The goal is to ensure that once a threat is discovered, we already have a plan in place, and once a risk arises, we can respond effectively," Wu said, adding that China will also launch cooperation initiatives with global partners for the common good in areas such as ground-based monitoring, co-development and payload integration, as well as data and achievement sharing.

Participants of an e-commerce training program take a group photo in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region.

\n

An e-commerce training program in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region has brought together young entrepreneurs from China and abroad to boost digital trade and deepen cultural ties.

\n

The three-day event, held in mid-August in Guyuan city, drew more than 60 participants from Ningxia and countries including Yemen and Egypt.

\n

According to Ban Yanrong, director of the e-commerce and service trade division at the Department of Commerce of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the training aimed to enhance mutual understanding and friendship, strengthen e-commerce cooperation, upgrade local industries, and boost the digital economy.

\n

Among the trainees was Turkmenistan's Orazbayev Gurban, a student at Ningxia University, who expressed strong interest in China's e-commerce ecosystem — particularly livestreaming e-commerce and social e-commerce models.

\n

"China is a leader in this field. It's no longer just 'online shopping' — it's a complete ecosystem that integrates entertainment, social interaction and instant consumption. I'm eager to delve deeper and learn its core operational logic," he said.

\n

Gurban also highlighted Ningxia's strategic role as a pioneer in economic and trade exchanges between China and Arab countries. The region is developing a comprehensive pilot zone for cross-border e-commerce, offering an excellent platform for young entrepreneurs from Arab countries, he said and hoped his own experience would help promote e-commerce between China and Arab countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

\n

He added that while e-commerce is growing rapidly in his motherland, it still relies on traditional shelf-based models.

\n

Livestreaming e-commerce is in its early stages, with significant gaps in content quality, interactivity and supply chain integration compared to China. Consumer trust in online payments also remains limited.

\n

The training proved highly beneficial for participants such as Gurban. Courses on short video production and livestreaming simulations were particularly useful. Through handson guidance in scriptwriting, camerawork, lighting, and live control techniques, trainees quickly grasped essential skills.

\n

After returning home, Gurban plans to serve as a business intermediary, introducing Chinese brands to the Arab market through localized e-commerce strategies. He also aims to help Arab brands enter China by offering end-to-end solutions covering market positioning, e-commerce operations, logistics, and customs clearance.

\n

Huang Yan, a specially invited expert from the China International Electronic Commerce Center, said there are several advantages for e-commerce development in Arab countries: a significant youth demographic with over 60 percent of users under 30, improving logistics and payment systems, and a growing pool of multilingual professionals skilled in livestreaming.

"When we return home, our success stories and personal experiences will become powerful narratives that enhance mutual understanding and friendship between our peoples. This type of technology and business-driven exchanges, led by youth, is truly building an 'online Silk Road' for the digital age — bringing Chinese and Arab people closer together to create a shared and win-win future," Gurban said.

\n

Tian Zongke, head of a local agricultural company who participated in the training, said he studied overseas livestreaming shopping models and the innovative integration of China's "interest-based e-commerce" with livestreaming. He also explored ways to introduce high-quality Ningxia specialty products into Middle Eastern e-commerce channels.

\n

Together with streamers from countries including Yemen, Tian conducted a livestreaming session that resulted in 257 orders and a total transaction value of 20,100 yuan ($2,799), more than five times their usual sales.

\n

At the conclusion of the training, 12 participants including Gurban and Tian were selected to take part in the Seventh China-Arab States Expo, which was held in Yinchuan from Aug 28 to 31.

\n

These 12 individuals, comprising six from Ningxia and six from Arab countries, formed six teams to promote Ningxia products such as goji berries, wine and Tan sheep, as well as Arab commodities such as spices and handicrafts.

\n

They also conducted cultural interaction livestreams that blended product explanations with cultural stories, enhancing mutual understanding between Chinese and Arab consumers.

\n

Ban added that Ningxia will summarize the experience from this training and gradually expand similar programs to key countries involved in the BRI, including those in Central and Southeast Asia.

\n

By 2026, Ningxia will launch the "Silk Road Streamers" practical training project targeting Central Asian countries. This initiative will help establish a broader digital trade talent development network, supporting Ningxia's goal of becoming a new hub for cross-border e-commerce within its inland open economic pilot zone.

\n

"When we return home, our success stories and personal experiences will become powerful narratives that enhance mutual understanding and friendship between our peoples. This type of technology and business-driven exchanges, led by youth, is truly building an 'online Silk Road' for the digital age — bringing Chinese and Arab people closer together to create a shared and win-win future," Gurban said.

Chinese automakers are gaining ground in South America, where affordable electric vehicles and new factories are reshaping the region's auto industry and opening the door to greener mobility.

\n

Chinese automakers expanding into South America are being welcomed for bringing fresh investment and competition, but the long-term benefits will depend on how much value is added locally, said Jorge Arbache, a professor of economics at the University of Brasilia.

\n

"The region benefits from new industrial investments, technologies and increased competition," Arbache told China Daily.

Governments in Brazil and Argentina are encouraging foreign manufacturers as part of efforts to modernize their auto industries and cut emissions.

\n

Recent reports said Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has registered a local unit in Argentina as a car manufacturer.

\n

According to the filing with the country's Justice Ministry, the new entity, BYD Auto Argentina SAU, is authorized not only to import and sell cars but also to manufacture and maintain vehicles, batteries and auto parts.

China Daily sought comment from BYD but did not receive a response.

\n

Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors officially launched its first manufacturing facility in Latin America on Aug 15 in Brazil, with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva attending the ceremony.

\n

Lula praised China for creating jobs and urged more of its companies to expand operations in Brazil.

\n

"The GWM Brazil plant is very important for Brazil's national industry. This means creating jobs, increasing income and enhancing professional expertise for Brazilians," Lula said.

\n

He also called on Chinese carmakers to use Brazil as a regional hub. "The Brazilian government stands ready to support businesses and welcomes more Chinese companies to invest here," he said.

\n

"The Brazil plant is not only a strong commitment to the Brazilian market, but also the starting point for building the future together with our Latin American partners," said Mu Feng, CEO of GWM Global.

\n

"The governments in the region are eager for investments and for reducing emissions. This helps explain the industrial policies that support new investments in the automotive sector," Arbache said.

\n

A key question is whether the region can capture more of the value from the fast-growing electric vehicle industry.

\n

"The greater the integration between the region's economies and China's (economy), the greater the sharing of interests and cooperation will be," he said.

\n

Arbache noted that Chinese investment could generate more jobs and skills if local workers were more deeply integrated into advanced roles.

\n

"There could be even greater benefits by incorporating more local workers into managerial and higher-level positions," he said. "Workforce training and technology sharing are fundamental elements for a stronger cooperation."

\n

Chinese electric vehicle makers are poised to play a leading role in South America's EV market, according to Rodrigo Zeidan, a professor of practice in business and finance at New York University Shanghai.

\n

"There is a lot of potential, but the main barrier is infrastructure," Zeidan told China Daily.

\n

"In China, infrastructure was developed even before the explosion of EV producers; in South America, there are severe obstacles to widespread and efficient infrastructure investment."

\n

However, affordability gives Chinese automakers a decisive edge, Zeidan said.

\n

"Chinese producers don't have legacy costs and are much more efficient," he said.

Foreign exchange reserves rise

\n

China's foreign exchange reserves totaled $3.3222 trillion at the end of August, up by $29.9 billion, or 0.91 percent, compared to the end of July, official data showed. The State Administration of Foreign Exchange attributed the increase to the combined impact of currency translation and changes in asset prices. In August, the US dollar index fell as expectations on the monetary policies of major economies and macroeconomic data influenced the market, while global financial asset prices generally rose, according to the administration.

\n

Yuan strengthens against greenback

\n

The central parity rate of the Chinese currency renminbi, or the yuan, strengthened 35 pips to 7.1029 against the US dollar on Monday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. In China's spot foreign exchange market, the yuan is allowed to rise or fall by 2 percent from the central parity rate each trading day. The central parity rate of the yuan against the US dollar is based on a weighted average of prices offered by market makers before the opening of the interbank market each business day.

With an investment of approximately 1.1 billion yuan ($154 million), Daiichi Sankyo China broke ground on a new facility to produce antibody-drug conjugates (ADC) — an emerging class of highly potent pharmaceutical therapies usually used for treating cancer — in Zhangjiang Science City located in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on Monday.

\n

As one of China's first national pilot programs for cross-border segmented production of biological products, the facility will localize ADC manufacturing and expand the supply of innovative ADC therapies, underscoring the Japanese pharmaceutical company's long-term commitment to the China market.

\n

Such pilots innovatively support multinational companies in breaking down and distributing the biopharmaceutical production process across different domestic and international sites. Daiichi Sankyo has adopted a cross-border segmented production model, focusing on high value-added production stages in Pudong.

\n

The company said this approach not only connects global technology with local demand, but also serves as a best practice that supports China's further opening of its biopharma sector to the global market.

\n

China has in recent years rolled out new measures to attract biopharma investment, including deepening institutional opening-up, fostering innovative approaches to advanced biopharmaceutical production, and enhancing reimbursement systems for innovative drugs — all of which encourage multinational R&D and manufacturing in China and align with Daiichi Sankyo's strategy for the new facility, the company said.

\n

"Our global ADC platform supports a robust pipeline across multiple oncology indications, including several clinical-stage candidates," said Hiroto Kashiwase, executive officer and head of the global technology unit of Daiichi Sankyo.

\n

"This facility will be a key driver not just for production, but for faster patient access through added capacity and supply stability. It will help us deliver breakthrough ADC therapies to Chinese patients more efficiently, addressing growing and diverse treatment needs," he said.

\n

With an aging population and changes in lifestyle, the overall incidence of cancer is on the rise, and there remain persistent unmet medical needs. Experts said that ADC technology, through its precise targeted delivery mechanism, can effectively address the limitations of traditional treatments.

\n

Having operated in the China market since the 1980s, Daiichi Sankyo, with a history of more than 120 years, has progressed from product launches to full-scale operations. The new ADC facility will add to such capabilities, further bringing R&D, manufacturing, supply and sales under one roof while embedding the company even more deeply in the Chinese market, the company said.

\n

Xu Lai, deputy government head of Pudong New Area, said that Pudong has become one of the regions in China with the most complete industry chain, the best ecosystem, the highest concentration of talent, the most efficient research and development, and the most active innovation in the biopharmaceutical field.

\n

"Currently, Pudong is committed to a dual-drive approach of technological and institutional innovation, emphasizing both R&D and manufacturing. Pudong aims to establish itself as the premier launch site for global innovative drugs and medical devices, a pioneer in institutional reform, and a preferred destination for scientists to innovate and start businesses," she said.

\n

Data from the Pudong government show that foreign capital and companies have been a cornerstone for Pudong's economic development. Companies from 175 countries and regions have invested in over 40,000 projects in Pudong since the early 1980s.

\n

Diplomats from 14 countries, including Dominica, Jordan, and the Bahamas, recently concluded an immersive four-day tour of the Ningxia Hui autonomous region as part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's 2025 "Discover China Cultural Tour". The visit, which began in Yinchuan, the region's capital city, on Aug 26, provided an in-depth exploration of Ningxia's rich cultural heritage and striking natural landscapes.

\n

The delegation visited several key landmarks, starting with the Ningxia Museum, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts, some of which are more than 1,000 years old. There, they gained deeper insights into Ningxia's significant role as a pivotal hub along the ancient Silk Road.

\n

The envoys also stopped at the Ningxia Art Museum, where they participated in a hands-on calligraphy session, writing Chinese characters with brush and ink — a firsthand experience to appreciate the elegance of this traditional art form.

\n

A major highlight of the itinerary was the Xixia Imperial Tombs, an expansive burial complex dating back to the 11th century that was recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Nestled in the Gobi Desert, the site includes nine imperial mausoleums and 271 subordinate tombs. The delegates were deeply impressed by both the grandeur of the architecture and the site's historical significance as a crucial distribution center along the ancient Silk Road.

\n

"The inclusion of this site on the UNESCO list demonstrates the contributions Chinese civilization has made, and continues to make, to world heritage and our shared human history," says Hussam Al Husseini, Jordan's ambassador to China.

\n

At the Helan Mountain Rock Art Scenic Area, the delegation viewed representative examples of ancient petroglyphs. These rock carvings, often referred to as "the art gallery of prehistoric humans" and "an epic on stones", depict scenes of hunting, farming, herding, rituals, and totems, offering a glimpse into the millennia-old multiethnic life in the Helan Mountain region.

\n

"The rock paintings are like the communication of ancient times. It's really impressive," says Khamis Mussa Omar, the ambassador of Tanzania to China.

\n

In Zhongwei's Shapotou scenic area, situated on the fringe of the Tengger Desert, the diplomats learned about China's pioneering efforts in desertification control, including the innovative "straw checkerboard" technique used to stabilize sand dunes. They also enjoyed desert adventures, such as dune bashing and cable car rides.

\n

Upon arriving in Wuzhong city, the final stop on the tour, the diplomats participated in a workshop on the art of making "eight-treasure tea" under the guidance of local intangible cultural heritage inheritors. They also visited the Yellow River Grand Canyon, where they admired its unique cultural landscape, which seamlessly integrates ancient hydraulic engineering with majestic natural scenery.

\n

Since its launch in 2021, the "Discover China Cultural Tour" has welcomed more than 480 diplomats from 107 countries to 20 provinces and regions across China, providing them with firsthand encounters with the nation's cultural depth, natural beauty, and modern development.

\n

The Ningxia segment, which concluded on Aug 29, effectively highlighted the successful integration of cultural preservation, ecological conservation, and tourism development in China's western regions.

President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, along with foreign leaders and guests, walks toward the Tian'anmen Rostrum in Beijing on Wednesday ahead of a grand event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War.

\n

President Xi Jinping chats with members of a local farmer's family during a visit with his wife, Peng Liyuan, in Costa Rica, on June 3, 2013.

\n

An aerial drone photo taken on June 17, 2022, shows the headquarters of the New Development Bank in East China's Shanghai.

\n

At Beijing's Tian'anmen Square, President Xi Jinping, together with world leaders, attended a grand military parade on Wednesday morning honoring both China's victory and the collective triumph of nations that overcame fascism 80 years ago.

\n

Standing on the Tian'anmen Rostrum, Xi delivered a speech marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War. He called on nations across the world to eliminate the root cause of war and prevent historical tragedies from recurring.

\n

Xi said common security can only be safeguarded when nations across the world treat each other as equals, live in harmony and mutually support one another.

\n

For Xi, this solemn observance was more than a tribute to history; it signaled a vision for the future, where humanity can peacefully share a more just, equitable and prosperous world.

\n

Ahead of the ceremony, Xi and world leaders stepped onto the Tian'anmen Rostrum, shaking hands with Chinese war veterans in turn.

\n

Moments later, under Xi's gaze, People's Liberation Army troops in various formations marched through the vast square.

\n

That same gaze was present in May when he watched PLA troops march across Moscow's Red Square during commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in its Great Patriotic War.

\n

Shortly afterward, Xi joined Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders to lay red flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin Wall, pausing in silence for those who died in the fight against fascism.

\n

Ahead of the trip, a signed article by Xi titled "Learning from History to Build Together a Brighter Future" was published in the newspaper Russian Gazette. He wrote, "The world needs justice, not hegemonism."

\n

Xi's appeal has roots in history. In 2017, during a visit to the Memorial of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Shanghai, he lingered before three images capturing China's suffering more than a century ago: a late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) cartoon showing foreign powers carving up China, a chart of the crippling indemnities China was forced to pay, and Karl Marx's sharp critique of then China's isolationist complacency.

\n

"How much humiliation. How much disgrace. China back then was a fat sheep awaiting slaughter," Xi said.

\n

The end of the World Anti-Fascist War, or WWII, set the stage for a rebirth of the international order. From the ruins emerged the United Nations in 1945, with its Charter enshrining sovereign equality, noninterference and the peaceful settlement of disputes — a landmark break from centuries of the law of the jungle where "might is right".

\n

As this year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Xi has urged revitalizing the world body under the new circumstances, enabling it to serve as the primary platform for countries to coordinate actions and jointly address challenges.

\n

His message also reflects some acute present challenges facing the world order today. As Xi has observed, unilateralism, hegemonism, as well as bullying and coercive practices are severely undermining peace, justice and equality in the world.

\n

Xi offered his explicit perspective. "The strong should not bully the weak," he said. "Decisions should not be made by simply showing off strong muscles or waving a big fist. Selective multilateralism should not be our option."

\n

Under Xi's leadership, China has stepped up global peace efforts by following true multilateralism — taking part in UN peacekeeping missions, advancing the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's anti-extremism convention, mediating Saudi-Iran reconciliation, supporting the establishment of the "Friends for Peace" Group on the Ukraine Crisis, and co-founding the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong with 32 nations.

\n

"China will never seek hegemony, nor does it believe in a zero-sum," Xi has vowed. "Such notions have never been part of China's cultural DNA, nor is there any such ambition."

\n

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva once remarked on Xi's strong sense of justice.

\n

He told Xi: "You have been an inspiration for the profound changes humanity must pursue — to speak more of peace than of war, to cooperate more than compete, and to create more than destroy."

\n

No one left behind

\n

It is Xi's conviction that "only when countries develop together can there be true development".

\n

Last year in Rio de Janeiro, Xi joined world leaders at the G20 summit, whose theme-"Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet" — sought to confront the persistent inequalities in global development.

\n

Back in 2016, Xi chaired the G20 summit in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. The summit for the first time in history placed development at the center of the group's macroeconomic policy coordination.

\n

Sharing development experience, Xi told his colleagues in Rio that "China's story is proof that developing countries can eliminate poverty".

\n

In 2020, Xi led China, the world's largest developing country, in eliminating absolute poverty, a full decade ahead of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda's timeline.

\n

"If China can make it, other developing countries can make it too," Xi said.

\n

Fighting poverty has always been a central focus of Xi's work for more than 40 years, over the course of his career from county and city posts to provincial and national leadership. "I have devoted most of my energy to it," he once said.

\n

Xi championed several initiatives to end poverty, including Juncao technology — a grass used to cultivate edible mushrooms, feed livestock, and prevent soil erosion. Starting from the days Xi was a provincial official, he has begun to promote the technology to countries across the South Pacific, Africa and South America.

\n

Part of this unprecedented journey is documented in Up and Out of Poverty, a collection of Xi's speeches, articles and interviews from 1988 to 1990 during his tenure in Ningde city, China's southeastern Fujian province.

\n

In 2023, the Uzbek-language edition of the book was published, with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev writing a foreword entitled "A True Chinese Miracle".

\n

With a clear-eyed understanding of the world's predicaments, Xi has traced the turbulence in economic globalization to a major source: the lack of inclusive growth. To characterize the contradictions of today's world, he quoted Charles Dickens, "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times."

\n

In recent years, economic globalization has encountered setbacks, with the gap between the Global North and South and the technological divide becoming more pronounced. The gap between the rich and the poor is widening rather than receding, and 60 percent of people in the world have grown poorer, equating to almost 5 billion people, according to a research paper from Oxfam, the UK-based charity, released last year.

\n

"Development," Xi once said, "is an inalienable right of all countries, not a privilege reserved for a few." This explains why Xi has pushed for universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

\n

Months after taking over the Chinese presidency in 2013, Xi traveled halfway across the world and paid a state visit to Costa Rica. During the trip, he chose a coffee farm as one of his stops. Sipping a freshly brewed cup, he said: "Seems to me, there's room to export more coffee to China."

\n

The remark foreshadowed a broader pledge. China will keep its doors open and share the dividends of growth, Xi vowed. "Welcome aboard the fast train of China's development," he stated on several occasions.

\n

Also in 2013, Xi unveiled his signature Belt and Road Initiative. More than a decade on, the results are tangible. Freight trains now thunder between Chinese cities and European capitals. Kenya's modern railways and revitalized ports are remaking the East African landscape.

\n

On top of deepening economic linkages, Xi promotes a governance model that breaks with what he views as an outdated relic of colonialism, the Wall Street Journal once commented.

\n

Xi has consistently argued that development holds the master key to achieving that goal — a conviction shaped by his own life experiences. In the late 1960s, as one of China's "educated youth" sent to the countryside, Xi lived among struggling villagers in northwestern China's Shaanxi province.

\n

"One thing I wished most all the time," he recalled decades later in a speech in the US city of Seattle, "was to make it possible for the villagers to eat meat to their heart's content."

\n

Today, Xi is leading China on the path toward modernization. As a leader with a global vision, he also hopes that China can walk the path of modernization with all countries.

\n

"On the road to the well-being of all mankind, no country or nation should be left behind," Xi said.

\n

Equitable order

\n

At the just concluded SCO summit in Tianjin, Xi put forward the Global Governance Initiative.

\n

The aim of proposing the initiative is to "work together with all like-minded countries to resolutely safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and build a more just and equitable global governance system", he explained.

\n

Xi's proposing the initiative stands as a reflection of his sharp perception of the profound transformations that are reshaping the global landscape.

\n

"The collective rise of the Global South," Xi observed, "is a distinctive feature of the great transformation across the world." He has pledged that China will always keep the Global South in its heart, and maintain its roots in the Global South.

\n

In April 2015, the Indonesian city of Bandung — once called the "Paris of Java" — witnessed a moment where the past and present converged.

\n

From the 19th-century Savoy Homann Hotel, leaders of nearly 100 nations set out toward the Independence Building, retracing the footsteps of a generation that had defied colonial domination six decades earlier.

\n

At the head of the procession walked Xi and then Indonesian president Joko Widodo. It was a living echo of the 1955 Bandung Conference, the first meeting of Asian and African nations free of colonial powers, now hailed as a landmark event in the rise of the Global South.

\n

Through perseverance and huge sacrifice, emerging markets and developing countries have succeeded in gaining independence and shaking off the yoke of colonialism. These nations have been seeking development paths tailored to their own national circumstances rather than following models imposed by the outside. "Everything we do is to deliver better lives to our people," Xi once said.

\n

Driven by Xi's global vision, the legacy born in Bandung is quickly becoming a reality, where developing nations speak not as isolated voices but as a united force.

\n

The historic expansion of BRICS and the creation of forums linking China with Africa, Latin America, the Arab world and ASEAN all bear Xi's imprint, offering the Global South channels to coordinate and amplify their say in global affairs.

\n

In April 2025, during a visit to the BRICS New Development Bank in China's financial hub Shanghai — the first multilateral bank initiated and led by developing nations — Xi called it a pioneering effort for the Global South to join forces in improving global governance.

\n

The origins of his vision can be traced back to Xi's youth. He pored over The Communist Manifesto, Das Kapital and other Marxist classics, laying the intellectual foundation for what he later described as his abiding belief: "Marxism is broad and profound; ultimately, it is about seeking liberation for humanity."

\n

Decades on, as humanity is facing changes rarely seen in a century, Xi keeps pondering on the world: "What has happened to the world and how should we respond?"

\n

Xi first proposed building a community with a shared future for humanity in Moscow during his inaugural overseas visit as Chinese president. Two years later, on the stage of the UN headquarters in New York, Xi elaborated his thoughts on building such a community that involves partnerships, security, development, civilization and ecological cooperation.

\n

Xi's vision of building a community with a shared future reminded Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of an aphorism from the renowned ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius.

\n

"Si hai zhi nei jie xiong di — within the four seas, all men are brothers," Anwar uttered the maxim in Chinese during his reception held for Xi in Putrajaya this April.

\n

"President Xi is known as a capable political leader, as an economist, but more so and prouder profoundly, a great human being with strong, clear vision and understanding civilizational of values," he said.

\n

Over the years 2021 to 2023, Xi launched the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. Along with the Global Governance Initiative, these proposals are designed to enhance and improve the present international system.

\n

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has said that Xi is a great leader with profound historical insight and a broad global vision. He said, "The many global initiatives he has proposed are conducive to advancing peace and progress for humanity."

PLA on alert as foreign ships navigate Strait

\n

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command remains on high alert and is fully prepared to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and security, as well as regional peace and stability, a spokesperson said on Saturday. Shi Yi, a representative of the command, made the remarks while commenting on Canadian and Australian warships sailing through the Taiwan Strait. On Saturday, the Canadian frigate Quebec and the Australian destroyer Brisbane transited through the Taiwan Strait and engaged in provocative actions, which sent wrong signals and heightened security risks, Shi said. The command's naval and air forces closely tracked and monitored the Canadian and Australian military vessels' passage through the Taiwan Strait from start to finish, and took effective responses accordingly, said Shi.

Japan and Australia have tried to depict their strengthened security cooperation as a meaningful move to maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific. Yet what they have done by elevating their so-called special strategic partnership is actually stirring up tensions, making the region more insecure and unstable.

\n

In the 12th 2-plus-2 talks between their foreign and defense ministers that concluded on Friday, the two sides agreed to reinforce their command coordination while cooperating more closely in military exercises and in respect of logistics so as to "play a leading role in realizing a free and open 'Indo-Pacific'".

\n

Yet officials at the meeting — Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, as well as their respective Australian counterparts, Penny Wong and Richard Marles — did not stop at just parroting the hackneyed China-targeted phrases from the playbook of the United States' strategy in the region. They went further by seeking to provoke China on issues that concern its core interests.

\n

In a joint statement issued after their talks, the ministers underscored "the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait" and expressed "serious concern at the increase in scale and frequency of provocative activities by China in Japan's maritime and air domain". They tried to justify the enhanced building of their collective deterrence with unfounded concern over what they claimed is China's "military assertiveness" in the region.

\n

Such remarks confuse right and wrong, as they wrongly ascribe China's routine patrolling of the territorial waters of its Diaoyu Islands in accordance with the law to the intent of pursuing "military dominance" in the region. They also turn a blind eye to Japan's extensive military buildup that belies Japan's pacifist Constitution and poses a large threat to regional peace and stability. It should not be forgotten that, in July last year, a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer ventured into Chinese territorial waters off the eastern province of Zhejiang, purportedly "unknowingly".

\n

Moreover, the mentioning of Taiwan in the statement also disregards China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This risks undermining relations between China and the two countries, as the one-China principle is the foundation for relations between China and other countries.

\n

As established in international law, the Taiwan question is an internal affair of China that brooks no external interference. By threatening to intervene in the Taiwan question in the name of "maintaining peace and stability", Japan and Australia are reneging on their formal recognition of Taiwan as part of China and degenerating into puppets on the geopolitical chessboard of the US that seems bent on playing the "Taiwan card" to contain China.

\n

Yet, as if Australia thinks what it has done is not damaging enough to bilateral ties, it sent a guided-missile destroyer to sail through the Taiwan Strait together with a Canadian warship on Saturday, in a move that was strongly criticized by the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command for being "trouble-making and provocative". The joint transit only served to increase security risks across the Strait and sent the wrong signal to separatists on the island.

\n

There is no fundamental conflict of interests between China and Australia, and the two countries have every reason to build on their vast common interests and expand their mutually beneficial pragmatic cooperation. It is thus incomprehensible that Canberra should implement a foreign policy that only serves the US' geopolitical interests while ignoring all the negative consequences.

\n

Former Labor prime minister of Australia Paul Keating has justifiably criticized some politicians in Canberra for having "no pride" and a "miserable view of themselves". Pointing to Australia's lack of strategic autonomy, he said it was not intelligent for the country to be "owned" by the US, and warned that Australia should not get involved if tensions over Taiwan boiled over into conflict. "Taiwan is not a vital Australian interest," Keating rightly said. Hopefully his words will knock some sense into the heads of some in Canberra.

\n \n \n A master's graduate surnamed Yang in Zhengzhou, Henan province has taken social media by storm with his artistic take on\n \n shaobing\n \n (Chinese flatbread), amassing over 400,000 followers within just two months.\n \n \n

\n
\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n

\n \n \n Yang, a young postgraduate from North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power, started a\n \n shaobing\n \n business after quitting his previous job. Using just a utility knife, he sculpts the dough into elaborate shapes ranging from firearms like Desert Eagles to popular cartoon characters such as Labubu and Hello Kitty.\n \n \n

\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n

\n \n His stall has become particularly popular among children, who jokingly refer to it as a \"flour arsenal\". Daily queues form as soon as he opens for business, with some elderly customers reportedly waiting up to two hours to buy his creations for their grandchildren.\n \n

\n
\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n

\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n
\n

\n \n What began as a custom request from a child has blossomed into a viral phenomenon, with each piece meticulously hand-carved using only a utility knife — a skill he attributes to the spatial imagination honed during his engineering studies.\n \n

\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n

\n \n Remarkably, Yang prices each artistic flatbread at just 1 yuan ($0.14), despite their intricate designs. \"I initially sold them for 3 to 5 yuan but lowered the price to make them affordable for children,\" he explained.\n \n

\n
\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n

\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n
\n \n
\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n
\n

\n \n \n His Douyin bio — \"Unemployed civil engineering grad selling\n \n shaobing\n \n \" — underscores the unconventional career pivot that has sparked heated debate online.\n \n \n

\n
\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n

\n

\n \n
\n
\n

\n
\n

\n \n While many applaud his creativity and defiance of \"elite job\" stereotypes, critics question whether street vending justifies his education. Undeterred, Yang sees his venture as liberation. \"Traditional civil engineering didn't suit me,\" he shared, adding that livestreaming and content creation now fuel his entrepreneurial ambitions. His story resonates with a growing cohort of Chinese youth redefining success beyond conventional career tracks.\n \n
