"title": "001FRONT - China won't seek special treatment in WTO pacts",
|
||||
"description": "

As a responsible major developing country, China will not seek new special and differential treatment in current and future negotiations at the World Trade Organization, declared Premier Li Qiang at the High-Level Meeting on the Global Development Initiative in New York on Tuesday.
\n
This constitutes an important statement of China's position to the international community, which takes both the global and domestic situations into consideration, said Li Chenggang, China's international trade representative with the Ministry of Commerce and vice-minister of commerce, during a news conference on Wednesday.
\n
"It will surely serve as a shot in the arm for promoting the liberalization and facilitation of global trade and investment, and inject positive energy into the reform process of the global economic governance system," he said.
\n
China will firmly uphold the multilateral trading system, actively implement the Global Development Initiative and push forward global governance, he added.
\n
China, the world's largest developing country, will maintain its status and identity as a developing country, according to the vice-minister of commerce.
\n
China joined the WTO in 2001 as a developing member, thereby gaining the institutional right to enjoy special and differential treatment. Under the WTO framework, such treatment for developing members mainly includes lower thresholds for opening-up commitments and obligations, as well as longer transitional periods for implementation, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
\n
The ministry noted that since joining the WTO, China has enjoyed the special and differential treatment to which it is entitled and has actively engaged in multilateral trade negotiations. The country has made significant contributions to achieving multiple WTO negotiation outcomes and advancing freer and more convenient global trade.
\n
Li Chenggang emphasized that China has always been a member of the Global South and will always stand in solidarity with other developing countries. Looking ahead, China will remain committed to advancing modernization with Chinese characteristics, resolutely deepen reforms, expand high-level opening-up and promote high-quality development.
\n
Su Qingyi, director of the department of international trade at the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said: "China's stance of not seeking special treatment in WTO negotiations means its treatment would be the same as developed countries. This move responds to the demands of certain developed countries for revoking China's status as a developing country."
\n
"China's retention of its status as a developing country is in full compliance with international rules. The WTO has stated that China's current development level has not yet reached that of developed countries," Su said.
\n
The Ministry of Commerce said that China will fully and deeply engage in the reform of the WTO as well as in the adjustment of international economic and trade rules. The country will firmly stand alongside the vast number of developing member states, prioritize development as the core of the WTO reform process, drive the WTO to deliver more development-oriented outcomes, and propel the global economic governance system toward a more equitable and rational direction.
\n
Hu Jianguo, associate professor at the School of Law of Nankai University, said: "Many WTO member states hope that China will play a more pivotal role within the organization, and they also expect China to continue advancing high-level opening-up. In this context, China's latest announcement represents an important step in safeguarding and strengthening the WTO-led rules-based multilateral trading system."
\n
zhuwenqian@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

More shops and restaurants are set to launch in the last quarter of this year.
\n
Foreign guests attending the Beijing Culture Forum on Sept 23 and 24 toured the site and praised its revival.
\n
"The street is introducing elements that appeal to younger visitors, such as performances, markets, sports and outdoor activities," said Gao Tianliang, spokesperson for Beijing New Longfu Cultural Investment Co.
\n
The project has already attracted a number of high-profile "first stores" to Dongcheng district, including the Mahua Fun Age A99 Theater for comedy plays, the first designer hotel in North China under the NOA brand, China's first 7mesh cycling-themed shop, the first Red Star Forward Fresh Milk Cake store and a new concept store by outdoor brand Shanshui. Well-known names such as Sony ExploraScience and All Time Space have also set up outlets.
\n
Time-honored Beijing brands are joining in with a modern twist. Traditional medicine producer Tongrentang has opened a cafe serving TCM-flavored drinks such as goji berry and dried tangerine peel lattes alongside herbal pancakes, while Daoxiangcun has launched a themed "treasure hunt" store for its dim sums.
\n
"Our bread uses honey instead of sugar, as everyone knows excessive sugar intake is unhealthy. We also offer new Chinese-style coffees like goji berry latte, dried tangerine peel latte... all integrating food and medicine," said store manager Dai Xihong.
\n
Dai also introduced the unique Chinese pancakes, made with olive oil-fried crispy layers, two sterile eggs, and a special sauce made from over 10 Chinese herbs, which have become a hit among food enthusiasts.
\n
On the eve of the opening day in July, young visitors in Chinese costumes lined up to photograph themselves with mugwort bread and herbal coffees, creating a colorful scene at Longfu Temple.
\n
Older Beijingers have also returned. Zhao Yang, 73, who brought her granddaughter, said she wanted to "savor the old Beijing flavor" and remembered buying a marriage blanket at the former Longfu Plaza.
\n
Longfu Temple was built in 1452 during the Jingtai period of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and later served as a royal incense temple during the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
\n
From the Qing Dynasty and before the founding of new China in 1949, Longfu Temple was renowned as one of Beijing's most famous temple fair venues. Longfu Temple Fair gained a reputation as a "cultural temple fair" due to its focus on antique books, cultural artifacts and art transactions, earning the esteemed title of "Crown of All Markets".
\n
Fires in 1901 and again in 1993 destroyed much of the complex and later diminished the appeal of the commercial street that replaced it.
\n
The new Longfu Street aims to blend modernity with creative culture. Shen Yi, manager of Frienday shop, said: "Like many Beijingers, I have profound love for the Longfu Temple area, and that's why I opened a 150-square-meter shop with trendy bicycling cultural products this year. I believe a new Longfu Temple street will become increasingly rich in creative cultural atmosphere, more stylish and internationalized."
\n
Zhang Jingcheng, director of China Creativity Industry Research Center and a government consultant for Dongcheng district, noted: "Dongcheng is expected to boost cultural productivity and fashion consumption, leveraging itself from the history of the Central Axis, Longfu Temple and other traditional historical sites."
\n
yangcheng@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "009COMMENT - Xinjiang enters its best development stage thanks to CPC's governance guidelines",
|

"description": "

During his visit on Wednesday to a themed exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region at a cultural center in Urumqi, the region's capital, President Xi Jinping said the profound changes in Xinjiang over the past 70 years are a vivid reflection of the historic process of national rejuvenation.
\n
Xinjiang's prosperity and evolution into a hub of connectivity clearly demonstrate China's determination to foster development that respects and leverages local strengths and brings tangible benefits for local people.
\n
Under the leadership of the Party, Xinjiang has entered its best development stage in history thanks to the implementation of the Communist Party of China's guidelines for governing the region, as detailed in a white paper published last week.
\n
Practice has proved that the system of regional ethnic autonomy established by the Party is entirely correct. The Party's guidelines for the governance of Xinjiang in the new era are both scientific and effective, and must be adhered to over the long term.
\n
President Xi is leading a delegation of the central authorities to attend activities marking the anniversary of the region's founding, including a grand gathering on Thursday.
\n
Upon his arrival in Urumqi on Tuesday, Xi urged concerted efforts to better build a beautiful Xinjiang in the process of Chinese modernization, when he met with representatives from all ethnic groups and all walks of life in the region.
\n
His remarks clearly underscore the nation's commitment to continue fostering stability, prosperity and cultural vibrancy in the region under the CPC guidelines for governing Xinjiang.
\n
Xinjiang exemplifies a region transformed by a long-term vision and strategy. Modern infrastructure, improved living standards and the region's vibrant culture demonstrate the value of governance tailored to local realities.
\n
Xinjiang's economy and trade, society and culture have all witnessed steady progress under the holistic and systematic guidelines for governing the region in the new era and the establishment of an institutional framework tailored to Xinjiang's unique conditions.
\n
In recent years, the authorities have intensified their efforts to develop a modern industrial system based on the region's unique advantages.
\n
Xinjiang's annual growth rate has consistently been above the national average in recent years. Its GDP surpassed 2 trillion yuan ($281.1 billion) in 2024, continuing the trend of steady expansion. From 2012 to 2024, Xinjiang's GDP grew at an annual rate of 7 percent on average at constant prices, outpacing the national average.
\n
The region is also a new energy hub and is playing a pivotal role in China's Belt and Road Initiative, becoming a vital part of China's high-standard opening-up to the world.
\n
Its economic development and social cohesion are a strong rebuttal to the allegations of those trying to politicize Xinjiang to bash China.
\n
Xinjiang should continue to carry on the good momentum. After hearing the work report of local authorities on Wednesday, Xi urged the region to make more efforts to build a modern socialist Xinjiang that is characterized by unity, harmony, prosperity, affluence, cultural progress and a sound eco-environment, where people live and work in peace and contentment.
\n
To that end, Xinjiang should build on its resource endowment and industrial foundation and actively explore a path of high-quality development that suits its actual conditions. It should persist in developing distinctive and advantageous industries and cultivate competitive industrial clusters.
\n
The integration of culture and tourism and the development of the cultural tourism industry should be strengthened, as well as the protection and restoration of the region's eco-environment.
\n
These endeavors will be conducive to the region becoming a core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt so that it can play a greater role in the "dual circulation" connecting and integrating the domestic and international markets.
\n
During the process, local authorities should always prioritize protecting and improving people's livelihoods, and enable people of all ethnic groups to widely participate in the development process and share its fruits.
\n
For international observers, the 70th anniversary celebrations offer an opportunity for them to objectively view Xinjiang's measurable and multifaceted development achievements, as well as its bright prospects in the future.
\n

",

\n

",

It highlights that coordinating safety measures, mitigating risks, proactively adapting to climate change and strengthening the response system for major public emergencies are critical for Chinese modernization. Song Shanyun, deputy director of the China Meteorological Administration, spoke to Outlook Weekly news magazine on this issue. Below are excerpts from the interview. The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.
\n
Several key measures need to be taken to enhance the national resilience against climate risks. Climate security needs to be incorporated into the core framework of the national security system. Preventing and addressing climate risks should be regarded as essential to safeguard the security of food, energy, water, ecology, the economy and society. Major strategies and projects must take into account these risk factors and institutional arrangements should be continuously improved. Forward-looking response strategies must be developed for regions that face such risks, and preparations should be made to withstand disasters of once-in-a-century magnitude.
\n
It is also necessary to establish and improve institutional mechanisms to ensure climate security, thereby strengthening the overall resilience. An agro-ecological zoning system should be set up for a regular assessment and analysis of climate zoning. The adaptability of cities, new rural areas, major infrastructure projects, water resources and energy systems to future climate change should also be thoroughly evaluated.
\n
It is necessary as well to establish and strengthen the meteorological disaster census and risk zoning systems. Greater coordination between meteorological and other departments is required, alongside improvements in early warning systems to enhance disaster prevention measures and response capabilities.
\n
Cities should integrate climate resilience requirements and adaptation goals into their development plans, improve their disaster prevention capabilities and accelerate the adaptive retrofitting of urban infrastructure. The monitoring of meteorological disasters, early warning systems and climate risk assessment capabilities must also be strengthened. Urban preparedness for extreme weather events and the emergency response mechanisms need to be improved.
\n
Rural areas must raise their disaster prevention standards based on the meteorological disaster risk zoning, while also advancing adaptive retrofitting. There is a need to raise public awareness about disaster prevention and improve the self-rescue capabilities of rural residents and communities.
\n
Major infrastructure should be planned and constructed in such a way that their designs can adapt to climate change. Existing infrastructure should be thoroughly inspected and evaluated for climate adaptability, followed by renovations and upgrading if required. Insurance and financial support mechanisms for infrastructure should also be improved.
\n
Strengthening monitoring, forecasting and early warning capabilities requires reinforcing basic research, enhancing the existing system and promoting deeper integration of artificial intelligence with meteorology. A scientifically designed, technologically advanced, intelligent and precise integrated meteorological observation network should be established, alongside a comprehensive climate impact monitoring system. Detailed climate impact and risk assessment technologies should be applied to key areas. National standards for early warning systems need to be established. Against this backdrop, the forum served as both a bridge and an experiment, offering new perspectives for enterprises seeking transformation and market expansion, while also presenting opportunities for individual overseas property purchases and investments.
\n
As the forum's host, China Real Estate Information Corporation released a report on the trends in the United Arab Emirates' residential market for the first half of 2025 during the event.
\n
The report focuses on the fundamentals of the UAE's residential market, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the primary areas of analysis. Examining a wide range of factors such as trade performance, urban planning and real estate transaction patterns, the report looks to offer practical, data-driven insights for global investors, enterprises and researchers.
\n
"Overseas property investment should concentrate on regional hub cities. In the Middle East, Dubai and Abu Dhabi stand out as the key destinations," said Ding Zuyu, chairman of China Real Estate Information Corporation.
\n
Leading cities in mature markets, such as New York, London and Singapore, have long been magnets for real estate investment, said Ding. Similarly, as the UAE has established itself as a regional leader, its core cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi function not just as national centers, but also as financial and economic hubs for the wider Middle East.
\n
The report outlines three major strengths that underpin the UAE's property market: steady economic growth, strong demographic momentum and favorable policy support.
\n
"There is a growing appetite from investors in China for Abu Dhabi. Therefore, we see that opportunity increasing as we invest more time here and build brand awareness," said Jonathan Emery, CEO of Aldar Development.
\n
"With bilateral trade now approaching $100 billion, the scope for deeper cooperation is substantial," said Emery.
\n
This overall momentum is being felt in the real estate market. As the capital's largest developer, investor and manager, Aldar's figures tell the story clearly: in 2024, overseas and expatriate buyers accounted for 78 percent of its UAE sales, up from just 21 percent in 2021.
\n
According to Emery, a combined investment of $700 million has been made by Chinese investors in the UAE to date this year, "a demand not only from individuals but also from institutional investors".
\n
"We would hope that the opportunity is to grow ... we are investing time in communication and working with partners," Emery added.
\n
Nevertheless, experts cautioned that investors should closely monitor the sustainability of economic, demographic and policy trends in the UAE, while also remaining alert to geopolitical risks in the wider Middle East.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

"description": "

NEW YORK — US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell stressed on Tuesday that the Fed's policy is not on a preset course.
\n
"We will continue to determine the appropriate stance based on the incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks", under the commitment to supporting maximum employment and bringing inflation sustainably to the 2 percent goal, Powell said at the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce 2025 Economic Outlook Luncheon in Warwick, US state of Rhode Island.
\n
Near-term risks to inflation are tilted to the upside, while risks to employment are to the downside, Powell said. "Two-sided risks mean that there is no risk-free path. If we ease too aggressively, we could leave the inflation job unfinished …If we maintain restrictive policy too long, the labor market could soften unnecessarily," he said.
\n
"Our framework calls for us to balance both sides of our dual mandate," he said, defending the Fed's 25 basis point rate cut at its meeting last week. "This policy stance, which I see as still modestly restrictive, leaves us well positioned to respond to potential economic developments."
\n
The US economy is showing resilience in the midst of substantial changes in trade and immigration policies, as well as in fiscal, regulatory and geopolitical arenas, Powell said. But the overall economic effects of the significant changes remain to be seen, he said.
\n
Powell said the tariff-related effects on inflation will be relatively short-lived, calling it a one-time shift in the price level. But a "onetime" increase does not mean "all at once," he said, adding the increase in the price level will likely be spread over several quarters and show up as somewhat higher inflation during that period.
\n
And earlier on Tuesday, Fed Governor Michelle Bowman said the central bank should cut more quickly. Bowman, who was appointed by US President Donald Trump in his first term, said inflation appears to be cooling while the job market is stumbling, a combination that would support lower rates.
\n
When the Fed cuts its key rate, it often over time reduces other borrowing costs for things like mortgages, car loans, and business loans.
\n
"It is time for the (Fed) to act decisively and proactively to address decreasing labor market dynamism and emerging signs of fragility," Bowman said in a speech in Asheville, North Carolina. "We are at serious risk of already being behind the curve in addressing deteriorating labor market conditions."
\n
On Tuesday, Austan Goolsbee, president of the Federal Reserve's Chicago branch, said in an interview on CNBC that the Fed should move slowly given that inflation is above its 2 percent target.
\n
Federal Reserve on Sept 17 reduced the federal funds rate by 25 basis points. This adjustment resulted in a new target range for the federal funds rate of 4 percent to 4.25 percent.
\n

",

Since Monday, multiple streets in New York have been closed for his motorcade, reporters have been rotating through the press room to film, and thousands have gathered outside the UN headquarters to protest, leading to numerous arrests.
\n
This is Trump's first UN address since he returned to the White House in January, and it lasted nearly an hour, quadrupling his allotted 15 minutes. He criticized the world body for "not doing enough" as he recounted his foreign policy successes.
\n
Since returning to office, he has rolled back UN funding, with $1 billion already cut, and more reductions expected next year.
\n
Trump opened his remarks by complaining that the escalator inside the UN building and the teleprompter were not working, warning the operator was "in big trouble", though a UN official said the teleprompter was run by the White House.
\n
Trump also argued the UN has failed to broker peace, saying it does little more than issue "strongly worded letters" and offer "empty words". He again touted himself for a Nobel Peace Prize.
\n
However, amid the Gaza conflict, the US vetoed six UN Security Council ceasefire resolutions, saying hostages must be freed first — which Trump echoed in his speech.
\n
He also ripped into US allies for recognizing Palestinian statehood. On Monday, France, Belgium and others joined a growing list of countries recognizing the State of Palestine at a high-level UN conference on the two-state solution.
\n
"Some of this body is seeking to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state. The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities," Trump said.
\n
On Ukraine, Trump said he wants the conflict to end and warned that the US is prepared to impose "a very strong round of powerful tariffs" on Russia if it refuses a peace deal. He also accused European allies, as well as India and China, of buying Russian oil that he said is fueling the conflict.
\n
"Your countries are going to hell," he told EU leaders.
\n
In addition, Trump criticized UN climate efforts and urged countries to buy more US energy, saying the US would no longer sacrifice to shift the world away from carbon fuels. Upon returning to office, he again ordered the US to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.
\n
"All of these predictions made by the United Nations and many others, often for bad reasons, were wrong," he said. "They were made by stupid people."
\n
After his remarks, Trump met with several leaders and appeared to walk back to his earlier position.
\n
"Ukraine, with the support of the EU, is in a position to fight and win back all of its territory," he wrote on social media, signaling a shift from his earlier call on Kyiv to make concessions and his criticism of the EU.
\n
Measure of hope
\n
Before Trump's speech, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned about the dangerously chaotic state of the world while providing a measure of hope that unity and diplomacy can bring stability.
\n
"People everywhere are demanding something better, and we owe them something deserving of their trust," he said.
\n
The UN remains indispensable, Guterres said. "At its best, the United Nations is more than a meeting place. It is a moral compass, a force for peace … a guardian of international law and a lifeline for people in crisis."
\n
In the afternoon, French President Emmanuel Macron also addressed the UN General Assembly. He reportedly phoned Trump on Monday night after being blocked in traffic by the US president's motorcade.
\n
Macron offered a different vision than Trump, saying the UN is an important institution that must be strengthened. He also underscored the urgency of tackling climate change, warning it is "not under control" and "biodiversity is collapsing".
\n
He further urged Israel to end the "permanent war" with its neighbors, despite Trump's warning to European leaders in the morning.
\n
The UN's "harshest critics are also those that want to change the rules of the game, because they want to exert domination", Macron said.
\n
"The worlLine truncated

"description": "

The World Design Cities Conference (WDCC 2025), being held in Shanghai from Thursday to Sunday, alongside other international-level events, are helping spur innovation and advance the city's design capacity, nurturing new brands and facilitating the megalopolis' high-quality economic growth, said local officials.
\n
Organized by the Shanghai municipal government and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), WDCC 2025 includes two major exhibitions held in Shanghai and overseas, an international design forum with 100 participants and two thematic forums on global creative city design, said Zhang Ying, director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
\n
WDCC 2025 also includes specialized forums in five design fields of industrial, architectural, fashion, digital and services. Another five industry ecosystem-themed sessions will also be held to facilitate supply-demand matching, investment promotion, product launches, fashion shows and talent recruitment, said Zhang.
\n
The main exhibition in Shanghai covers an area of approximately 15,000 square meters, attracting about 500 brands to showcase over 3,000 exhibits. About 20 percent of participants are internationally well-established brands and around 60 percent are emerging brands, she added.
\n
The overseas exhibition will focus on promoting Shanghai's design and fashion consumer goods abroad. In late September, one exhibition is scheduled in Paris during the Bonjour Brand Forum, while another will be held in Italy during Milan Fashion Week. Exhibitions will take place in Kuala Lumpur in late October when industrial matchmaking events will also be held.
\n
A new U35 youth design talent program will be introduced to the WDCC for the first time this year to formulate favorable policies and support young talent startup projects.
\n
Ge Dongbo, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, said the city's creative design industry has been reporting double-digit annual growth over the past few years, with its size exceeding 1.6 trillion yuan ($230 billion) to date. A complete industrial layout combining industrial design, architectural design and fashion design has been established in the city.
\n
Holding events like the WDCC and the concurrent "Shanghai Design 100+" global competition has facilitated the conversion of design achievements valued over 250 billion yuan. The design industry ecosystem is continuously improving, fostering 21 national-level industrial design centers and 200 municipal-level design innovation centers, said Ge.
\n
Well-established brands featuring innovation and outstanding designs have thus been nurtured in the city, including a tilt-rotor electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft made by Shanghai TCab Technology Co Ltd, along with Xreal AI glasses and humanoid robots produced by Shanghai AgiBot Innovation Technology Co Ltd. These have served as important support for the development of "made-in-Shanghai" brands, he added.
\n
Meanwhile, advertising's creative design level in Shanghai has been advancing amid various events like the WDCC, said Zhang Hongbing, an official at the Shanghai market regulation bureau.
\n
In 2024, the city's advertising sector revenue reached 335.1 billion yuan, up 8.4 percent year-on-year. Over the first seven months of 2025, advertising revenue spiked 10.7 percent from a year earlier to 220 billion yuan. The scale of advertising's creative design business and the number of creative talent in Shanghai account for 40 percent and 22 percent, respectively, of the national total, Zhang said.
\n
The municipal government released on Sept 8 a set of 12 new measures to support the innovative development of the advertising sector by better using artificial intelligence. Innovative application of AI large language models and the development of intelligent advertising creative design agents are supported. Special funds as much as 20 million yuan will be provided for eligible AI-empowered creative advertising projects.
\n
shijing@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

Today, we are continuing our journey by investing in autonomy, alternative fuels, connectivity and digital, and electrification, with a steadfast focus on advancing our customers' productivity, safety, and sustainability for the next 100 years." He made the remarks during a media briefing at the ongoing 17th Beijing International Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines and Mining Machines Exhibition in Beijing.
\n
"This year marks the 100th anniversary of Caterpillar. It is also the 50th anniversary of the company's operations in China. China remains a strategic location for Caterpillar. In the coming years, with innovation being a key engine, we will be continuously committed to China, bringing better solutions to local customers."
\n
He noted that the past 50 years formed an important journey for Caterpillar. The company has been constantly developing advanced products and solutions to meet customer needs.
\n
"Looking forward, there will be dramatic changes in product application scenarios and customer needs. We've seen trends toward more flexible fuel solutions, more sustainable ways of working and more efficient operations. Based on these changes, we will continuously deliver expanded new product offerings and services solutions to our customers," he said.
\n
Caterpillar unveiled the latest products at the expo — Cat 3101 Super Large Hydraulic Excavator, NextGen Cat 301.7 CR Mini Excavator and SEM 669G (423.9 kWh) Electric Wheel Loader — designed for better performance, extended machine life cycles and lower operational costs.
\n
"In the past 50 years, we have successfully established a complete value chain in China, with local manufacturing, research and development, supply chain, services, and a strong dealer network. We stay focused on long-term opportunities in economic development in China," Yang said.
\n
Fang Jianxian, general manager of lmjx.net, said that Caterpillar — which has been present in China for the last 50 years — tells a vivid story of how a century-old enterprise constantly meets the demand of clients.
\n
From initially introducing equipment to China, establishing more than 20 factories and several branches, to moving the whole supply chain to the country, its localized strategy of "in China, for China" is actually forward-looking.
\n
"Specifically, Caterpillar is constantly investing in vocational training and STEM education in China, which not only cultivates local talent, but also solidifies its industrial base. This long-term approach is not common among multinational corporations," he said.
\n
zhengyiran@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

The region's vast geological potential, coupled with technological advancements and supportive policies, make it a critical component of the national energy strategy."
\n
According to the National Energy Administration, China's oil and gas majors have been stepping up exploration and development efforts throughout the last year, with major new discoveries made in Bohai Bay, Ordos Basin and Tarim Basin, focusing on increasing reserves and improving extraction efficiency.
\n
This has led to continued investments in exploration and development across both traditional and unconventional energy sources. The influx of investment, in turn, has spurred the growth of Xinjiang's oil and gas production and processing industrial cluster.
\n
This cluster encompasses a wide range of activities, from exploration and extraction to refining and petrochemical production, creating a comprehensive value chain that supports the region's economic development.
\n
The Xinjiang government has been actively promoting the development of the energy sector, recognizing its importance to the region's overall economic growth and stability.
\n
Looking ahead, Xinjiang is expected to play an even greater role in China's energy security, said Lin.
\n
According to data released by CNPC, the country's energy consumption in 2024 grew by 4 percent compared to 2023, driving global demand for primary energy up by 1.9 percent.
\n
"The region's vast untapped reserves, coupled with its growing technological capabilities and supportive policies, position it as a key driver of the nation's energy future," he said.
\n
"As China continues to pursue its economic development goals, Xinjiang's energy resources will become increasingly vital to powering the nation's growth."
\n
zhengxin@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

The rainy season brings leaks that demand three buckets strategically placed on her windowsill, and wall plaster has crumbled away entirely in some spots, exposing the bare brick beneath.
\n
"It's exhausting," she said. Her complaints echo a common refrain among millions of residents across China's cities, where a vast stock of housing is rapidly showing its age.
\n
These older neighborhoods, once the hallmark of urban modernization, now present a dual challenge: they are not only increasingly obsolete, with outdated amenities and poor insulation, but are also largely structurally unsound.
\n
Many have been classified as Grade C or D — the official ratings for buildings deemed unsafe for habitation — posing persistent safety risks to their occupants.
\n
Data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development show that by the end of 2022, nearly 20 percent of all urban buildings in China were over 30 years old. This signifies that a growing portion of the national housing stock is entering the middle and later stages of its intended design life.
\n
By 2040, an estimated 80 percent of urban buildings will have reached this phase, presenting a monumental task for policymakers focused on urban renewal.
\n
This significant challenge was underscored at a recent Central Urban Work Conference, which outlined the nation's transition from a period of rapid urbanization to one of stable, quality-focused development.
\n
The directive signals a fundamental change in priority: the focus is no longer solely on building the new, but increasingly on improving the old, experts said.
\n
For over a decade, the dominant approach for urban renewal was clear-cut: demolish aging neighborhoods and erect new towers in their place, said Yang Baojun, president of the Urban Planning Society of China.
\n
This approach, known as the shantytown redevelopment model, once drove a transformative wave of construction, relocating millions of residents into modern housing and clearing vast swathes of China's urban past.
\n
The model thrived in an era of booming real estate. With property values on a steady climb, local governments could easily partner with developers. The profits from selling new, higher-density apartments not only covered the costs of demolition and rebuilding, but also generated significant revenue, making it a financially self-sustaining engine of urban change, Yang said.
\n
That era, Yang noted, is largely over. As China's property market enters a period of recalibration and adjustment, the economic calculus that made large-scale demolition so viable has fundamentally shifted. The once-reliable profits have narrowed, complicating funding and discouraging developer participation, Yang added.
\n
"Now China is empowering residents to lead the revitalization of the country's aging urban housing stock, moving away from government-driven redevelopment models that once defined the nation's rapid urbanization," Yang said.
\n
The change, outlined in a recent central government directive on urban high-quality development, emphasizes "resident-led renewal and in-situ reconstruction" for old homes — a response to both economic constraints and evolving social demands.
\n
Li Yujia, chief researcher at the residential policy research center of the Guangdong Planning Institute, said: "It's a bottom-up refresh of urban neighborhoods. Residents organize, fund and manage the process. The government's role evolves from direct player to facilitator and policy guarantor."
\n
Through community self-governance, residents make collective decisions, raise funds independently and openly select developers to demolish and rebuild existing structures — all while guaranteeing their right to return, Li said.
\n
Last year, Zhejiang became the first province in China to issue trial guidelines supporting resident-led urban renewal, a policy now formalized in the newly implemented regulations. The rules establish a clear legal pathway: building ownerLine truncated

A young lieutenant, newly assigned to permanent service, rushes to join his unit at the fortress. Before he can even be officially registered with the garrison, artillery fire erupts at 4 am, marking the brutal beginning of a siege that would rage for 10 months.
\n
Sergei Korotaev, the film's director, tells China Daily that he had long been immersed in the novel's world and felt bound to the pain and courage of its protagonist, whose love for his motherland drives him to fight against overwhelming odds.
\n
The director goes on to elaborate on the novel's enduring legacy, saying: "It's a classic whose magic has never faded with time. Interestingly, the film's release in Russia sparked a renewed passion for the book — sales surged by nearly 70 percent."
\n
Brest, formerly known as Brest-Litovsk and Brest-on-the-Bug, is now a city in southwestern Belarus on the border with Poland. Its defense remains a symbol of resistance and sacrifice.
\n
"Most of the soldiers who fought in the battle were very young, with an average age of about 22. The war broke out without warning. Many didn't even have time to grab their weapons — instead, they seized whatever was at hand, such as bricks or sticks, to join the fight. Yet, their enemy was the well-trained German army, equipped with some of the most advanced weapons in Europe," says the director, highlighting the war's brutality.
\n
Of the eight films selected for this year's festival, half are set against the backdrop of 20th-century conflicts, particularly World War II or the Cold War. Aside from His Name Was Not Listed, the other three movies are all adapted from real-life events: Carusa (also Karuza), about a boy and his puppy; Blood Type, a harrowing account of Nazi atrocities at a children's concentration camp; and The North Pole, which recounts the voyage of the first Soviet nuclear submarine, K-3, under the ice of the Arctic Ocean.
\n
The rest of the festival's selection includes three fantasy tales — The Frog Princess, Finist the First Warrior, and The Bremen Town Musicians — and one sci-fi romance, HomE, which fictionalizes an AI robot's yearning to establish a bond with a genius AI developer.
\n
Carusa begins in 1939 with a young boy, Mitya, receiving a puppy as a gift. Their idyllic life is shattered a few years later by the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War and the devastating siege of Leningrad. As Mitya's family starves amid the brutal conditions, their loyal dog risks everything, even a deadly minefield, in search of food.
\n
Sergei Bagirov, a producer of Carusa, shares an interesting behind-the-scenes story with China Daily about how the crew used a trick to get the dog "actor" to perform.
\n
"When we needed the dog to pick up a piece of meat, we froze it first so it had no smell. That way, the dog would fetch it tamely," he says with a big Line truncated

The goals took Mbappe's total to nine in seven matches with Madrid this season. He also scored twice in two matches with France's national team.
\n
The 18-year-old Mastantuono, signed from River Plate in the summer and, making his fifth start for Madrid, scored in the 38th minute with a shot from inside the area into the top right corner.
\n
"I was waiting for this goal," he said. "It helps me gain even more confidence within the squad."
\n
Vinicius, who had complained about being substituted by Alonso in the team's previous match, had put Madrid ahead with a neat strike into the far corner in the 28th. Great assist, great run and I didn't have to do a lot.'
\n
"It was stupid ... he's now suspended for Saturday, and that is far from ideal."
\n
Ekitike later apologized on Instagram: "The emotion got the better of me tonight," he said. "My apologies to all the Red family."
\n
League leader Liverpool, with a 100 percent record so far this season, has a tricky away trip to unbeaten Crystal Palace next in the league.
\n
Slot fielded a completely changed starting lineup from the side that played Everton on Saturday, with Isak starting and scoring his first goal for the club.
\n
"It wasn't our best performance, which probably has a lot to do with players that haven't played for a long time, or are playing for the first time," Slot said.
\n
He added that Isak would get more game time, with Liverpool trying to build him up faster than usual, but did not expect him to be fully up to speed until after the next international break.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

When I was eight, I pulled down the map. I'll never forget. I wanna go to China someday and, finally, I'm here. So this is a dream come true for me," King said in an interview during the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
\n
The Billie Jean King Cup, the international women's team tennis competition, was renamed after her in 2020. The tournament, founded in 1963, was originally known as the Federation Cup.
\n
King, born in 1943, won 39 Grand Slam titles during her career, including 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles and 11 in mixed doubles.
\n
She credited her father for her success.
\n
"My dad was really important, because he pushed me, he believed in me as much as my brother. He was a great life coach, he taught us to always respect people, be kind to others and give everything you have when you play," she said.
\n
Beyond her on-court achievements, King has been a pioneer for gender equality in tennis. She was a founding figure of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) in 1973, serving as its first president and driving reforms that shaped the modern women's tour. Her advocacy was instrumental in achieving equal prize money at the US Open in 1973, a fight that culminated with Wimbledon finally implementing parity in 2007.
\n
"I've been doing that my whole life, really. I used to put my money into all women sports, not just tennis. In the old days, it was like: 'Oh, we're gonna help you.' It's like a charity. Those days are over," she said. "Now women's sports are starting to really get huge in the world. People are using them as an investment, and they get return on their money."
\n
On her first visit to China, King devoted most of her time to the stands of the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, watching every match of the tournament. "The matches were fantastic, with close scores and high tension. There were moments we were on the edge of our seats, praying, 'don't miss this shot!'"
\n
With the nickname "the World Cup of Tennis", the Billie Jean King Cup features national teams. King emphasized the unique honor for players to represent their countries in an individual-centric sport. "You play for something bigger than yourself, you play for your teammates, you play for your country," she said.
\n
Host China lost to champion Italy 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Despite the defeat, Chinese players Yuan Yue and Wang Xinyu were highly competitive, with both creating chances before faltering on key points.
\n
King, who watched the match, said the Chinese team's performance was promising. "China got so close to winning. It was so close, they can compete right up at the top," she said. "I think China will have a champion in men's and women's soon. I mean you already have one, but I think you'll have more champions," she added.
\n
With the Billie Jean King Cup Finals scheduled to be held in Shenzhen for three consecutive years from 2025 to 2027, King expressed her desire to return to China.
\n
"I hope to come back many more years. When people ask me if I like China, so far I do, but it's the people that make the difference in the country. It's not just beautiful mountains and buildings. It's really about the people," she said.
\n

",

At the same time, they care for each other like members of one big family, 70-year-old Li said.
\n
Forging ethnic unity may seem like a big challenge, but in Xinjiang — which has been a multiethnic region since ancient times — it starts with little things such as a peck on the cheek, lending a helping hand when someone is in need, or celebrating festivals together.
\n
"Such actions are never deliberate, but something happens every day and comes naturally from people's hearts," Azgul, 49, said. And it can only be achieved when people from all ethnic groups understand that despite their different ethnicities, they are all equal members of the Chinese nation with a shared future."
\n
Shalkjan Yiming, from northern Xinjiang's Tacheng city, said ethnic unity is the best defense against secessionists who have in the past harmed Xinjiang residents' lives and damaged national unity.
\n
"The last thing the secessionists want to see is that people from different ethnic groups are united, because they know how powerful it can be," the 79-year-old from the Uygur ethnic group said in the small courtyard of his home in the Hardun residential community. "description": "

China rebuked the European Commission for unwarrantedly and wantonly imposing sanctions on Chinese entities in its previous packages of sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine crisis, based on the false allegation that they are "supporting" Russia's military. However, the commission targeted more Chinese entities in a sweeping new package of sanctions against Russia over the weekend.
\n
In its 19th package of sanctions since the start of the Ukraine crisis, the European Commission added 12 Chinese enterprises to its blacklist, targeting refineries, oil traders and petrochemical companies. Subject to approval by all EU member states, the sanctions purportedly demonstrate that "Europe is increasing its pressure on Russia", according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
\n
China is not the creator of, nor is it a party to the Ukraine crisis. It remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting peace talks and playing a constructive role in multilateral efforts to realize a political settlement of the crisis. By trying to demonize the normal exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Russian entities as efforts to "support" Russia's military, the European Union is simply trying to shift the blame onto China for its own failure to end the conflict.
\n
The commission has apparently realized that Ukraine, despite the support it is receiving from the United States and the EU, is unlikely to defeat Russia on the battlefield.
"title": "009COMMENT - Agriculture, rural areas and farmers essential to national modernization",
|
||||
"description": "

President Xi Jinping's festive greetings ahead of the eighth Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival, which fell on Tuesday this year, were a clear signal that China regards food security as a core strategic issue. As rains, droughts and floods continue to test the country's agricultural resilience, Xi's message underscores both what has been accomplished and what remains to be done to ensure that its food bowl remains firmly in its hands.
\n
The festival is the first national festival created specifically for the country's farmers. Initiated in 2018, the festival coincides with the autumnal equinox each year, which is one of the 24 solar terms of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. It usually falls between Sept 22 and 24 during the country's agricultural harvest season.
\n
Despite natural disasters such as droughts and floods, China managed to secure a stable summer crop this year. The production of early rice increased, and yet another bumper grain harvest is anticipated. These achievements reflect that China has achieved basic self-reliance in staple grains, such as rice and other major cereals.
\n
However, China remains a net food importer, especially of agricultural goods where domestic production is insufficient and demand exceeds domestic supply.
\n
It is thus necessary to modernize both agriculture and rural areas to ensure food security. To that end, China must deepen its inputs in science, technology, equipment and policy to raise the overall agricultural production capacity and efficiency. And priority should be given to policies that strengthen agriculture, benefit farmers and enrich rural areas. This means enhancing agricultural R&D and widely adopting mechanization. The use of resilient seed varieties, improving water and soil management and disaster-response are also fundamental requirements to ensure that agriculture lays the foundation for social stability, modernization and national rejuvenation.
\n
Furthermore, strengthening agricultural infrastructure is critical. A bumper harvest depends not only on the quality of seeds but also on the quality of farmland, irrigation facilities, water conservancy, pest control, storage and transportation and more. How prepared the farmland is, how good the irrigation and drainage facilities are, and availability of agricultural technology will all contribute to reducing losses and boosting efficiency.
\n
But production is only part of the equation. The state of the rural economy is also important. Agriculture's modernization requires that processing, logistics, storage, commercialization, rural markets and value chains work better. Farmers' incomes must rise not just through higher yields but also through value added by downstream industries, rural enterprises and better market access. The goal is for agricultural modernization and rural vitalization to go hand-in-hand.
\n
Equally important is protecting farmers' legal rights and interests. President Xi emphasized the need for policies that strengthen agriculture, benefit farmers and enrich rural areas. Legal protection — over land tenure, fair returns, contracts, access to inputs and redress for disaster losses — is essential. Without secure rights and shared benefits, farmers become vulnerable, and their eagerness to invest or adopt innovations could weaken.
\n
Xi also linked agricultural modernization with efforts to build a beautiful and harmonious countryside — a place desirable to live and work in. This requires enhanced environmental protection, better public services, support for the local rural culture and improved living conditions. As China upgrades its agricultural capacity, it must also ensure that rural life improves, not just economically but socially, culturally and environmentally.
\n
As Xi urged, multiple measures should be taken to boost employment and incomes for farmers, while advancing all-around rural vitalization.
\n
By accelerating the modernization of agriculture and committing to protect farmers and rural life, China is demonstrating its resolve to make rural development and environmental harmony integral elements of its modernization. That is not only essential for China — it offers lessons to many countries seeking stable, sustainable food security in an unpredictable world.
\n
Food security is multifaceted. It requires not just planting more grain, but also resilient infrastructure, better systems and stronger production chains, as well as improved welfare and protection of the rights of those working on the land. The integration of agricultural modernization with rural vitalization and building a beautiful countryside means that China's rural areas will not lag behind but become important contributors to the country's modernization.
\n

获取更多RSS:
<a href=\"httpsLine truncated

However, there is another less visible manmade health challenge that countries are increasingly fighting against.
\n
The drive to rid the global food supply of industrial trans fat — a chemical responsible for over 278,000 deaths each year around the world — is a clear case of how government commitment and action are succeeding in promoting health and saving lives.
\n
Industrially-produced trans fat is a silent killer found in everyday products, often in baked goods, snacks and margarine. It is formed when liquid vegetable oils are industrially processed into semisolid forms to improve texture, taste and shelf life. Trans fat has no known health benefits but numerous proven harms. Even small amounts can increase the risk of coronary heart disease. However, with dedicated action, trans fat can be significantly reduced, or even eliminated, from the food supply chains, offering hope for a healthier future for tens of millions of people worldwide.
\n
In 2018, the World Health Organization proudly launched a global initiative supported by its member states to eliminate trans fat from processed foods. Two years later, the WHO initiated a program to recognize countries for successfully doing so.
\n
The drive is bearing fruit.
\n
Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Thailand were the first to be recognized for eliminating trans fat. Now, four more countries — Austria, Norway, the Sultanate of Oman and Singapore — have joined that number. This means a combined population of more than 170 million people live in nine countries now certified by the WHO for eliminating trans fat from food manufacturing.
\n
Austria was one of the first countries to introduce limits on trans fat content in foods, following Denmark's lead in 2009. Austria has since seen a significant reduction in trans fat levels across the food supply, with most products now complying with limits during routine monitoring.
\n
Norway is an early adopter and has set limits on the use of trans fat in foods since 2014. Monitoring of dietary intake has shown a steady decline in consumption of trans fat over time. Trans fat has consistently accounted for less than 1 percent of energy intake.
\n
In 2022, Oman joined other Gulf Cooperation Council countries to prohibit the production, import and marketing of partially hydrogenated oils and related food products. This decisive move aligned with Oman's broader goal of eliminating all forms of malnutrition, as outlined in its National Nutrition Strategy 2020-30.
\n
Singapore, on the other hand, has pursued trans fat elimination since 2013, and has imposed a limit on all fats and oils sold in retail markets or supplied to food service establishments and manufacturers. Later, Singapore prohibited the use of partly hydrogenated oils (PHO) as an ingredient in fats, oils, and pre-packaged foods. The city-state has also worked with major food companies to reformulate their products to be PHO-free.
\n
Encouragingly, food manufacturers themselves are supporting this effort. Members of the International Food and Beverage Alliance have committed to eliminating trans fat from their products. While progress has been made, efforts remain varied and reflect a broader, ongoing shift within the food industry to create healthier food options and contribute to the global fight against trans fat.
\n
When the WHO first called for the elimination of industrially produced trans fat across the world seven years ago, only 11 countries, accounting for only 6 percent of the global population, had best-practice trans fat elimination policies in effect.
\n
This number has since increased to almost 60, including the nine countries certified by the WHO, comprising 46 percent of the global population. In 2019, the European Union, too, set a legal limit of no more than 2 grams of trans fat per 100 grams of oil or fat used in food. These rules apply to all countries in the European Economic Area.
\n
We look forward to these, and all other countries, being recognized by the WHO as eliminating trans fat from their manufactured food supplies.
\n
An essential factor in success of the campaign against trans fat is the implementation of nationwide systems to rigorously monitor and enforce the policies to remove the deadly threat from foods.
\n
As Austria, Norway, Oman and Singapore have demonstrated, it is possible to realize great change when strong commitment is paired with decisive evidence-based action. "title": "010VIEWS - Everyday acts of unity form the heartbeat of life in Xinjiang",

"description": "

\n
Before my business trip to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in September last year, I used to think "ethnic unity" was a lofty political phrase, something reminding us of official documents. That impression changed one afternoon on a community square in Korla in central Xinjiang. I saw a 74-year-old Uygur man, Qader Keyim, leading a "pomegranate seed art troupe" in singing a song, Blossoms of the Pomegranate.
\n
He was playing the Xinjiang hand drum, called dap, with an elderly man of Han ethnic group accompanying him on the accordion and a Mongolian woman adding her high-pitched but mellifluous voice to the song.
\n
At that moment, it was impossible to tell who belonged to which ethnic group. What you felt was a sense of togetherness and camaraderie. Scenes like this are common across Xinjiang, but what struck me most were the small, human stories.
\n
In Aksu, a city level prefecture in southwestern Xinjiang, I met Zhao Wuzhong, a farmer from Sichuan province who traveled to Xinjiang in the 1990s to plant walnut trees on barren desert land. When a sandstorm nearly destroyed his young orchard, Zhao thought of winding up everything and returning home in Sichuan. It was a Uygur neighbor, Muheddin Tuerdi, who persuaded him to stay — and even lent him 10,000 yuan ($1,405), nearly all his savings.
\n
"People thought he was crazy," Zhao told me, "but he said that he trusted me." Years later, Zhao's walnuts bore fruit. The first person he rushed to tell about it was Tuerdi, cycling to his house with a handful of fresh walnuts. Zhao later returned the kindness, teaching his neighbor new pruning and grafting skills that helped Tuerdi's older trees to yield far more walnuts than before.
\n
Over the past two decades, the two families have become as close as those of brothers, celebrating holidays together and raising their children side by side. Unity here is not an abstract slogan; it is the help extended when someone is about to give up.
\n
In Altay prefecture in far north Xinjiang, I heard the story of Alipa Alimahong, a Uygur mother who has been honored as one of China's "most inspiring women".
\n
She adopted 10 orphans from Han, Hui, Uygur, Kazakh and other ethnic groups, in addition to raising her own children.
\n
To pay for their schooling, she and her husband worked extra jobs and even sold the milk from their cows instead of keeping it for the family. "In my home," she said, "there is no difference between one child and another. They are all my children." Her household eventually comprised six ethnic groups and more than 180 people — a living symbol of what "a big family" means.
\n
Such encounters convinced me that unity is not an abstract concept; it grows out of ordinary people's kindness, trust, and love for each other.
\n
I also saw how broader policies and support make such unity more sustainable.
\n
In Wensu county, which is part of Aksu prefecture, I visited "Jinhua New Village", once a poor settlement relocated in 2012 and renamed in gratitude for the support from Zhejiang province. Rows of houses stood amid apple trees and grape arbors, with a cultural hall and a community stage at the center. A young mother told me shyly, but with a smile: "My husband and I earn about 7,000 yuan a month. Healthcare is free, kindergarten is free, and our children enjoy 15 years of compulsory education in both Uygur and Mandarin."
\n
Her words pointed to something larger: the strength of a system that shares resources across regions, so that no community is left behind. What I saw in Jinhua was not only better living conditions, but also the spirit of mutual help that makes unity a lived reality.
\n
Xinjiang offers a powerful model of multiethnic harmony. There, I observed that cultural distinctions are celebrated, yet they do not lead to division. The bond could be a shared bowl of pilaf, a chorus and a dance on the square, the brotherhood born out of a walnut orchard, or a mother's embrace that crosses ethnic lines.
\n
Ethnic unity, I came to understand, is far more than a symbol. It is the foundation for stability and development, for families to prosper and for regions to pursue modernization. This is not unique to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region or the country as a whole. It answers a universal question: How can people of different ethnic and religious groups not only live together but also help each other thrive?
\n
Standing on the Korla square, I thought again of the metaphor Chinese leaders often use: the people of all ethnic groups should be "closely united like the seeds of a pomegranate that stick together".
\n
Line truncated

It is now more about when, rather than if, they will take the next step."
\n
Reuters reported that some ICC staff had been paid their salary in advance, in case potential sanctions included actions that would disrupt the court's software and banking capabilities, and that alternative financial services suppliers were already being sought.
\n
julian@mail.chinadailyuk.com
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

"title": "011WORLD - Trump designates Antifa as 'terrorist organization'",
|
||||
"description": "

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order designating Antifa as "a domestic terrorist organization", a move some experts believe lacks legal authority.
\n
"President Donald J. Trump is right: the violence problem is on the Left. That's why he just designated Antifa — a network of Radical Left terrorists that aim to overthrow the government through violence and agitation — as a domestic terrorist organization," the White House said in a document. It also lists examples of the movement's "long history of terrorizing our communities", including attacks on US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, police officers, attendees of conservative political events, and Trump supporters.
\n
The order directs the federal government to "investigate, disrupt, and dismantle all illegal operations "conducted by Antifa or any person claiming to act on behalf of Antifa. It also calls for "necessary investigatory and prosecutorial actions against those who fund such operations".
\n
"Antifa's terror is part of the trend of Radical Left violence that has permeated the nation in recent years, incited by constant lies and vicious attacks against Republicans from unhinged Democrat politicians, well-funded leftist organizations, and their allies in the media," said the document, adding that conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed by a "radical left terrorist".
\n
"There is no legal authority to actually designate a domestic group as a terrorist organization even assuming that Antifa is an organization and not just an ideology," Mary McCord, a former acting head of the Justice Department's national security division, was quoted by The New York Times as saying.
\n
No legal means
\n
A report by The Washington Post also noted that the United States has no legal means of designating domestic terrorist groups, adding that experts expressed concern that the move could be used to justify a crackdown on the political left more generally.
\n
During his first term in 2020, Trump also announced he would designate the Antifa movement as "a terrorist organization", largely a response to the nationwide protests and unrest that erupted after the killing of African American George Floyd by police. But no concrete action was taken.
\n
Trump signed the latest executive order amid a heated domestic debate over political violence following the death of Kirk. In response to Democrats' argument that both the left and right engage in political violence, Trump recently claimed that "most of the violence is on the left".
\n
US authorities have charged the suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, with murder.
\n
Antifa has a track record of confronting right-wing groups and engaging in civil disobedience.
\n
Antifa-aligned activists, often dressed entirely in black, protest against racism, far-right values and what they consider fascism, and say violent tactics are sometimes justified as self-defense.
\n

",
