China's National Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Monday that the engraved stone is the only known one from the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) still preserved at its original site and located at the highest altitude during the historic period.
\n
After months of lively debate about its nature, an inscribed rock carving near a lake in Madoi county, Qinghai province, has been identified by the National Cultural Heritage Administration as being from the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC).
\n
The 37-character inscription was found in 2020 on a rock along a lakeside slope, about 4,300 meters above sea level. It is of typical Qinera zhuanshu, or seal script writing style. The characters are spread across an area of 0.16 square meters, 19 centimeters above the ground.
\n
Tong Tao, an archaeologist with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, arrived at the site in 2023 and realized its extraordinary significance.
\n
Except for some unclear characters, he recognized that the surviving words indicated that the carving was a historical recording that was absent from previously known documentation.
\n
The characters documented that Qinshihuang, the first emperor of China, had sent a high official named Yi on a mission to lead alchemists picking medicinal herbs on Kunlun Mountain.
\n
It is the only known surviving Qin-era rock carving that remains at its original site and could provide a key reference on the location of Kunlun, a monumental sacred mountain in ancient Chinese culture that is hailed as the "ancestor of all mountains".
\n
For example, in Erya, one of the oldest Chinese dictionaries, dating back to the third century BC, it is said that "the river comes from Kunlun", which corresponds to the location of the rock carving, which is close to the source of the Yellow River.
\n
Nevertheless, after Tong, the archaeologist, wrote an article to release the earlier findings in Guangming Daily newspaper in June, the inscription ignited a lasting debate in the media. While some scholars supported its identification as being from the Qin Dynasty, others doubted its credibility and saw it as a modern fabrication due to its well-preserved condition.
\n
Deng Chao, director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration's department of historic monuments, said at a news conference on Monday in Beijing that "laboratory analyses indicate that the inscribed rock consists of quartz sandstone, characterized by high abrasion resistance and strong weathering durability".
\n
"Through high-definition examination, distinct tool markings on the inscribed characters were identified, indicating their creation using blunt-tipped engraving instruments, which matches with craftsmanship practices of the historical period," Deng added.
\n
For the analysis, the administration organized expert panels involving archaeologists, historians, cultural relic conservators and calligraphy researchers, as well as experts in other fields, to conduct two rounds of field research and evaluation of the area surrounding the site.
\n
Li Li, deputy director of the China Academy of Cultural Heritage, added that mineralogical composition studies and metallic element analysis conclusively ruled out the possibility of fabrication involving contemporary alloys or modern carving implements.
\n
"The mineral types and contents inside the carved grooves and on the surface of the carved stone are basically consistent," she said. "This indicates that both the interior of the grooves and the rock surrounding the inscriptions have undergone long-term weathering."
\n
Li Ling, a veteran archaeologist and paleographer at Peking University who conducted detailed, comparative studies of the rock carving in Madoi and other confirmed Qin inscriptions, said, "Most expert panel members agreed with the conclusion that these characters are of the Qin era, though this writing in the wilderness has some variation compared with those already documented."
\n
Line truncated

|

"description": "

China and the United States have reached a basic framework consensus on properly resolving TikTok-related issues, reducing investment barriers, and promoting relevant economic and trade cooperation after two days of talks in Madrid, Spain.
\n
However, Beijing has made it clear that it will not pursue any deal that compromises China's core principles, the interests of Chinese companies, or international fairness and justice.
\n
Top negotiators from Beijing and Washington, led respectively by Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, conducted "candid, in-depth and constructive" communication on economic and trade issues of common concern starting on Sunday.
\n
Vice-Premier He said that China hopes the US will work together with it to quickly remove the relevant restrictive measures against China, take concrete actions to jointly safeguard the hard-won achievements of the trade talks, and create a good atmosphere for the stable and sustained development of Sino-US economic and trade relations.
\n
Addressing a news briefing on Monday, Li Chenggang, China's international trade representative with the Ministry of Commerce, said the two sides "reached a preliminary framework consensus on properly resolving TikTok-related issues through cooperation, scaling back investment barriers, and promoting relevant economic and trade cooperation."
\n
Li, who is also vice-minister of commerce, emphasized that China will "under no circumstances seek any agreement at the expense of its principled stance, the interests of its enterprises, or international fairness and justice". The Chinese government fully respects the will of enterprises and supports them in conducting equal business negotiations on the basis of market principles, he added.
\n
Wang Jingtao, deputy director of the Cyberspace Administration of China, said the Chinese government will review and approve matters related to TikTok's technology exports, the licensing of its usage rights, and other issues in accordance with the law.
\n
"China hopes that the US will, pursuant to the consensus reached between the two sides, provide a nondiscriminatory economic and trade environment for Chinese enterprises operating in the US, including TikTok," he said.
\n
Wang Wen, dean of Renmin University of China's Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, said," Any successful negotiation requires mutual effort and, fundamentally, mutual respect."
\n
He pointed out that the US pursues a contradictory strategy. "The world is watching. So are the markets. Washington can choose the path of respectful engagement and shared gains with Beijing, or it can continue down the dead end of unilateral pressure and bear the consequences," Wang Wen added.
\n
Chen Wenling, former chief economist at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, said that by choosing to talk regularly and in detail, Beijing and Washington are sending a clear signal that they understand that a total breakdown in economic ties is a risk neither can afford.
\n
Contact the writers at wangkeju@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

"title": "004CHINA - One failed course will no longer bar postgrad path",
|
||||
"description": "

Several Chinese universities, including the Nanjing Agricultural University, have adjusted their policies for recommending outstanding undergraduates for postgraduate programs without entrance exams, moving away from the strict practice of disqualifying students with even a single failed course record.
\n
According to the 2026 postgraduate enrollment plan released by the Nanjing Agricultural University, students with no more than one failed compulsory course — which should have been retaken with a passing grade — are now eligible for recommendation for postgraduate studies without entrance exams.
\n
Previously, students who failed any course were not eligible for such recommendations.
\n
Similar changes have been adopted by other institutions, including the Xi'an Jiaotong University, Hunan University of Technology and Business' School of Intelligent Engineering and Intelligent Manufacturing, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
\n
The updated policies reflect a more flexible approach to evaluating students' overall capabilities rather than relying solely on flawless academic transcripts.
\n
The relaxation does not mean lower overall standards. For instance, NAU's College of Engineering still requires a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and certain thresholds in English proficiency tests. The shift aims to identify students with comprehensive strengths rather than only perfect scores.
\n
The move is part of broader reforms in China's education evaluation system, which seek to move beyond a narrow focus on test results, diplomas and publications, experts said. Greater emphasis is being placed on students' overall development, innovative potential and practical abilities, they said.
\n
Cai Zhenhua, an associate professor at the School of Public Administration of Xiangtan University, said the policy shift helps address the overemphasis on GPA and test scores, which has led to excessive competition and neglect of holistic growth.
\n
Students often invest disproportionate time in improving grades and rankings, overlooking crucial elements such as moral education, mental and physical health, and practical skills, Cai said.
\n
This adjustment marks a significant step in reducing irrational academic competition and promoting an education system that values long-term potential and comprehensive quality over short-term academic performance, he said.
\n
The traditional "no-failure "requirement had its historical rationale, as grades provided a clear quantitative measure, Cai said.
\n
"However, as society evolves, a singular focus on academic performance is inadequate," he said. "We must acknowledge the complexity and diversity of talent development."
\n
It is likely that more universities will adopt similar policies, Cai added. "Failing one course should not define a student's entire academic career. Instead, we need systems that encourage exploration, allow for setbacks, and ultimately foster well-rounded talents."
\n
zoushuo@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

The remaining seven seats will be appointed by the SAR's chief executive within 15 days of the final results being confirmed.
\n
According to the SAR's Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election, initial figures showed that 175,272 ballots had been cast in the direct elections — the highest on record. The turnout reached 53.35 percent — a notable increase from the 42.38 percent recorded in the previous election in 2021.
\n
Indirect elections were held in five sectors — industrial, commercial and financial, labor, professionals, social services and education, and culture and sport. A total of 6,645 eligible voters cast their ballots for their own sectors, with a turnout of 88.12 percent.
\n
Under the SAR's electoral system, voters in the direct elections cast their ballots for teams of multiple candidates. It's absolutely delicious!" a worker said in the company canteen.
\n
Fresh vegetables are a luxury in the archipelago that is better known as a tourist destination. It has just 69 square kilometers of arable land with severe soil salinization. "title": "008COMMENT - Establishment of nature reserve beyond criticism, aligns with regional interests",
|
||||
"description": "

A healthy ocean is essential to the world. But the marine biodiversity in many areas is under severe stress. Marine nature reserves have proven to be an effective approach to safeguard the marine environment, resources and biodiversity. That explains why China decided last week to establish Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve in the South China Sea.
\n
Despite this being a necessary move, and a legitimate one, as the area covered falls within the country's sovereign waters, the Philippine Foreign Ministry said it "strongly protests" against it. The United States also pointed an accusing finger at China on Friday, claiming the decision is yet "another coercive attempt" to assert itself in the waters.
\n
The US State Department claimed that the US is ready to "stand with" the Philippines in rejecting China's move regarding Huangyan Island. This will inevitably escalate regional tensions and likely compromise any efforts aimed at resolving the tensions between the Philippines and China through dialogue and consultation.
\n
To establish the nature reserve, which is aimed at protecting the ecological environment of the island, and ensuring its ecological diversity, continuity and sustainability, is within China's sovereign rights. China's sovereignty over the island and its surrounding waters is indisputable. Neither the Philippines nor the US has legitimacy to make such irresponsible remarks about the move.
\n
Setting up the nature reserve is in line with China's domestic laws and international law, and fully shows that China, as a responsible major country, is resolved to actively protect the ecological environment.
\n
China undoubtedly bears both the right and the duty to ensure that the island's marine environment remains healthy and sustainable. Huangyan Island's coral reefs, fish stocks and overall ecological environment are under increasing threat due to the Philippine government turning a blind eye to the rampant illegal fishing activities of its nationals. That makes improving management and strengthening supervision and law enforcement an urgent task.
\n
The attempts by the Philippines to continuously challenge China's sovereignty over Huangyan Island constitute a betrayal of its own history. None of the international treaties that define the borders of the Philippines includes Huangyan Island. Moreover, the Philippine Constitution, published in 1935, clearly excludes Huangyan Island from the country's territorial boundaries.
\n
The scope of Philippine territory is defined by several international treaties, and has never included Huangyan Island. China does not accept the Philippines' groundless accusations and so-called protests. The Philippines is urged to stop violating China's sovereignty, making provocations and spreading disinformation, as well as creating factors that could complicate the situation at sea.
\n
The great lengths Manila, backed by its patron, has chosen to go to in a bid to politicize the legal and necessary move of China expose which party is trying to make waves in the otherwise tranquil waters, and which party is attempting to turn the common home of the region into an arena for geopolitical games for external parties.
\n
Regional countries can see clearly that the provocative "freedom of navigation" operations of the US and the joint military exercises the Philippines conducts in the South China Sea with external parties, including the US, are anything but to safeguard a "free and open" sea as they are purported to be.
\n
In the latest trouble-making move, the Philippines, Japan and the US conducted joint maritime exercises in the Philippines' so-called exclusive economic zone from Thursday to Saturday.
\n
The sooner the Philippine government stops making every move based on a dangerous gambling mentality or a geopolitical game plan written by the US to contain China, the better it will serve its own national interests. It is Manila's strategic misjudgment that constitutes the practical threat to the country's security.
\n
China will continue to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in accordance with law. In the process, the country is committed to working with regional countries, including the Philippines, to make the South China Sea a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation. The establishment of the nature reserve should be regarded as being an integral part of those efforts.
\n
If Manila really cares about the marine biosystem in the waters as it claims, it should realize the establishment of the nature reserve aligns with the collective regional interests, including its own.
\n

",

"title": "008COMMENT - Building beautiful China calls for wider participation",
|
||||
"description": "

Editor's note: Wang Jinnan, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and honorary director of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment's Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning, spoke to Minsheng Weekly about the Beautiful China Initiative, a national development blueprint that has laid out specific targets for China's green and high-quality growth. Below are excerpts from the interview. The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.
\n
The past five-year plans have paved the way for continuous improvements in the environmental quality of the country. The 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period will be crucial for advancing the goal of building a beautiful China. This requires the active participation of the whole of society.
\n
Only when the public at large develops a strong awareness of ecological and environmental issues can effective environmental protection truly take shape.
\n
Against this backdrop, planning for environmental protection should focus on three areas.
\n
First, scientific research should be deepened to ensure that the planning is based on scientific principles. There should be a thorough review and evaluation of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), with a careful assessment of how domestic and international developments affect the environment. The objectives of the 15th Five-Year Plan should be aligned with the long-term goal of building a beautiful China by 2035. This would ensure problem-oriented, goal-oriented and results-oriented planning.
\n
Second, departmental coordination should be strengthened to make the planning more feasible. Environmental protection has expanded from traditional pollution control and ecological conservation to cover low-carbon development, pollution prevention, ecological safety, climate change response and ecological security. Interdepartmental cooperation must be enhanced to ensure holistic and coordinated planning that is both practical and implementable.
\n
Third, public participation should be broadened. Consultations should be conducted with research institutions, universities, enterprises, industry associations and grassroots organizations, while also soliciting inputs from social groups and media outlets. By leveraging online consultations, surveys and other channels, policymakers can better understand public concerns and expectations, which would ensure that the 15th Five-Year Plan reflects collective wisdom and shared aspirations.
\n
Looking ahead, ecological improvements must move from quantitative to qualitative changes. The aim is to achieve new institutional and practical innovations in green development, ecological restoration, environmental governance and eco-civilization reform.
\n
The hallmark of a beautiful China is the overall improvement of environmental quality. The major environmental challenges, such as water, soil and air pollution, should be resolved effectively during the next five years. Indicators of air, water and soil quality should meet high standards in most parts of the country, while flagship species in protected areas should prosper.
\n
Green and low-carbon development must be treated as the key solution to environmental challenges. During the 15th Five-Year Plan, China aims to foster green production and lifestyles, peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve a significant reduction in carbon intensity.
\n
The modernization of environmental governance systems and capabilities is a critical pillar of the Beautiful China Initiative. To achieve this, it is essential to strengthen self-reliance in green and low-carbon technologies. During the 15th Five-Year Plan, breakthroughs in theoretical approaches, core technologies and equipment are expected, alongside the development of qualified talent teams.
\n

",

By clearly delineating the legal status of the island and its adjacent waters, China established an unambiguous juridical basis for all subsequent administrative actions, including environmental regulations, resource management and public enforcement.
\n
The establishment of the nature reserve follows logically from this legal groundwork, and reflects a consistent governance principle: sovereignty is the foundation, jurisdiction the mechanism, and long-term ecological preservation the ultimate objective. The principle aligns with China's policy on ecological conservation, which emphasizes harmony between humans and nature.
\n
The establishment of marine protected areas is globally recognized as one of the most effective ways of preserving marine biodiversity and sustainably managing fishery resources.
\n
Moreover, the move shows the development of China's maritime strategy — from the previous emphasis on security to a more integrated, ecologically-informed and globally responsible role. By designating Huangyan Island, a site of considerable ecological and geographical importance, as a protected zone, China has not only fulfilled its duty as a major power to preserve marine ecosystems but also shown its leadership in fostering regional collaboration to achieve common environmental goals.
\n
Of even greater significance is how the establishment of the nature reserve would help deconstruct harmful narratives, such as the "China threat" theory and the notion that the South China Sea is being increasingly "militarized" or "securitized". By prioritizing ecological protection, China has sent a peaceful message to the international community, rebutting many of the misleading allegations and conspiracy theories spread by some vested interests.
\n
As a result, any efforts to provoke militarization or escalate security dilemmas in the region in the future will encounter stronger moral and legal resistance.
\n
The nature reserve will also serve as a sophisticated response to the provocative actions taken by other claimants, including illegal "beaching" of vessels, expansion of artificial islands, and so-called joint drills and patrols aimed at politicizing the South China Sea issue.
\n
Rather than resorting to direct military countermeasures, China has chosen a more visionary and constructive form of action — redirecting attention from sovereignty conflicts toward shared ecological responsibilities. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that "silence on a crime is a crime".
\n
A draft final statement seen by AFP warned that "brutal Israeli aggression" put efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Arab states at risk.
\n
It "threatens all that has been achieved on the path toward establishing normal relations with Israel, including existing and future agreements", the draft added.
\n
The statement welcomed a "shared vision for Arab security "between Arab and Muslim states, as leaders discussed a proposal to establish a NATO-style joint military force contributed by members of the Arab League.
\n
Prince Turki Al Faisal, former Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States and the United Kingdom, wrote in a column that economic and diplomatic sanctions should be declared against Israel.
\n
"And they must remind the US of its responsibility in allowing Israel to continue its foolishness. The credibility of the US is at a crossroads in the Arab and Muslim worlds."
\n
Adnan Hayajneh, a professor of international relations at Qatar University, noticed a momentum against what Israel is doing in Gaza and the region as a whole.
\n
"The US has to wake up to the fact that you've got 2 billion Muslims around the world insulted, and it's only the beginning. It's not only the attack on Qatar, it is a continuation of the destabilization of the whole region," he said.
\n
However, political analyst Marwan Bishara told Al Jazeera that Middle Eastern states "are not going to find their collective security and defense overnight".
\n
"That's going to take time," he said.
\n
The deadly attack — carried out by one US ally on the territory of another — sparked a wave of criticism, but US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, dispatched by President Donald Trump, traveled to Jerusalem at around the same time as the Arab and Muslim summit.
\n
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Rubio on Monday, saying the visit shows the resilience of the US-Israeli relationship, which is "as strong and durable as the stones of the Western Wall we just touched", The Times of Israel reported.
\n
Rubio, who earlier said the US was "not happy" about Israel's attack in Doha but that it was "not going to change the nature" of US-Israel ties, did not speak to the media in Jerusalem, the newspaper said.
\n
In Gaza City, Israeli forces have since Monday dawn killed more than 24 people after deadly strikes on Sunday, Palestinian officials said, and forced thousands of people from their homes to flee south, some cramming into pickup trucks, others on foot.
\n
"The situation is very difficult," said Ahmed Habboush, 62, who fled on foot. "Most people do not have the money to get transportation to move. This is not a life; we are exhausted. Animals have a better life than us."
\n
Agencies contributed to this story.
\n
cuihaipei@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "012WORLD - Global Governance Initiative welcomed",
|
||||
"description": "

African experts have welcomed the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping at the "Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus" Meeting in Tianjin on Sept 1, describing it as both timely and visionary.
\n
Stephen Ndegwa, executive director of South-South Dialogues, a Nairobi-based communications development think tank, said the GGI does not seek to overturn the existing order but to rejuvenate it — making it fairer, more inclusive, and better aligned with current realities.
\n
"Just as the Communist Party of China has consistently adapted governance to China's changing conditions while remaining grounded in people-centered development and collective progress, so too must global governance reflect the needs of the 21st century, rather than the power structures of 1945," he said.
\n
Ndegwa said the initiative's core commitments — adhering to sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, practicing multilateralism, advocating a people-centered approach, and focusing on taking real actions — draw from China's own governance experience of balancing continuity with reform, respecting diversity while seeking common goals, and ensuring that institutions deliver tangible benefits.
\n
He said it fuses the wisdom of history with a vision for the future, drawing lessons from the anti-fascist struggle and underscoring that only fairness and unity can sustain peace while correcting today's inequities.
\n
"The GGI ensures the Global South, particularly Africa, is not a bystander but a co-architect of the international order," Ndegwa said.
\n
Patrick Maluki, chair of the Department of Diplomacy and International Studies at the University of Nairobi, said the GGI complements China's other major proposals — the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative — by outlining a pathway toward an international order that is inclusive, equitable, and collaborative.
\n
Shared responsibility
\n
"These initiatives emphasize dialogue over confrontation, partnership over zero-sum competition, and shared responsibility over unilateral dominance," Maluki said.
\n
He said that for African countries and the wider Global South, the four initiatives represent a continuation of the post-World War II pursuit of sovereignty, justice and development.
\n
"Just as our predecessors resisted aggression and contributed to the establishment of a more stable global order, today we must work together to strengthen international institutions, promote sustainable development, and address shared challenges — from climate change and pandemics to regional security and economic inequality," Maluki said.
\n
"By engaging with these initiatives, we contribute to shaping a world that is more just, peaceful, and inclusive."
\n
He said the GGI highlights the importance of rules-based systems, multilateralism and inclusive dialogue in tackling complex and interconnected challenges such as climate instability, technological disruption, transnational terrorism and economic disparities.
\n
"No single nation can address these challenges alone. Success depends on cooperation, trust, and adherence to shared principles," Maluki said.
\n
James Shikwati, director of the Inter Region Economic Network, an independent African think tank, said the GGI opposes value imposition, allowing Africa to celebrate its mosaic of culture.
\n
He said the initiative is also critical for harnessing the continent's youthful population into strategic talent pipelines, enabling them to plug into global value chains.
\n
China offers the continent alternatives for development, using security as an organizing principle, culture and respect for diversity of values as the glue, and international governance reform as an operating system, Shikwati said.
\n
Cavince Adhere, an international relations scholar at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, in Kenya, described the GGI as China's proposal to rethink how countries cooperate internationally, anchored in respect for sovereignty, promotion of the common good and action-oriented cooperation.
\n
He said the initiative will play a key role in jump-starting important conversations on how countries can collaborate in an equitable and respectful way that delivers prosperity for all, big or small.
\n
Peter Kagwanja, chief executive officer at the Africa Policy Institute, based in Nairobi, said the initiative will help advance the vision of a new multipolar order.
\n
edithmutethya@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

The Classical Gardens of Suzhou were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 and 2000, earning the city global recognition as the "City of Gardens".
\n
Established in 1904, The Butchart Gardens has grown from a reclaimed limestone quarry into a lush sanctuary of blooms, now designated a National Historic Site of Canada and celebrated as a paragon of Western horticultural design.
\n
"Today is especially important to us here at The Gardens because it was 10 years ago, we were honored to receive our beautiful bronze dragon fountain as a gift from Suzhou," said Dave Cowen, chief executive officer of The Butchart Gardens.
\n
"We hope this beautiful fountain stands for many years, celebrating peaceful friendship and travel between our two countries," he said.
\n
Cowen said the history of the gardens is deeply intertwined with Victoria's Chinese community, noting that Chinese workers played a key role in transforming the former quarry into what is now the Sunken Garden.
\n
Enduring value
\n
Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto said the milestone reflects the enduring value of person-to-person connections. "It is so critical that we actually have the ability to … create those relationships," she said.
\n
During the ceremony on Sept 9, the audience was treated to a Kunqu opera performance, featuring an excerpt from The Peony Pavilion, a UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage. Musicians from the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra and Victoria performed a rendition of the Canadian folk song Red River Valley and the Chinese classic Jasmine Flower.
\n
Zeng Zhi said the event's significance lies in its focus on shared values. "Suzhou is a historical and cultural city, most famous for its gardens. Their exquisite design is world-renowned," he told China Daily.
\n
"Victoria is most famous for its natural scenery, its coastline and unique environment. Although their focus is different, they share a common idea — the concept of harmony between people and nature.
\n
"I think this idea was one of the reasons the two cities became sister cities in the first place," he said.
\n
He added that cultural and tourism exchanges between China and Canada are growing with more direct flights connecting the two countries.
\n
Sheryl Karras, from the University of Victoria, who attended the event, said the event was a privilege to attend. "It's wonderful to have an event commemorating the Suzhou City and Victoria City sister-city relationship," she told China Daily.
\n
During the ceremony, The Butchart Gardens and Suzhou's Lion Forest Garden signed a friendship agreement through their representatives.
\n
Qian Yucheng, deputy director of the Suzhou Municipal Administrative Bureau of Gardens, said the past four decades of cooperation had produced "fruitful results" in culture, education, gardens and sports.
\n
gaoyang@chinadailyusa.com
\n

",

"description": "

China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will enhance their trade relationship, driven by closer supply chain connectivity and vast consumer market potential, as they work to consolidate their role as each other's largest trading partners, said market watchers and business leaders on Monday.
\n
Although large-scale infrastructure projects have long been the hallmark of Chinese companies in Southeast Asia, the region is increasingly recognized as one of China's most vibrant trading partners as bilateral ties enter a new phase of growth, said Wan Zhe, a professor specializing in regional economic development at Beijing Normal University.
\n
Li Guanghui, dean of academic affairs of the China-ASEAN School of Economics at Guangxi University in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, said the future implementation of Version 3.0 China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, together with deeper exchanges under the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and continued collaboration through the Belt and Road Initiative, is expected to support long-term trade growth.
\n
China has maintained its position as ASEAN's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, while ASEAN has been China's largest trading partner for the past five years, said the Ministry of Commerce.
\n
Bilateral trade rose 9.7 percent year-on-year to 4.93 trillion yuan ($692.42 billion) in the first eight months, accounting for 16.7 percent of China's total foreign trade, said the General Administration of Customs.
\n
Such vibrant two-way trade has also created opportunities for Chinese manufacturers to deepen their presence in ASEAN markets, said Li Yong, a senior research fellow at the Beijing-based China Association of International Trade.
\n
Li said that by leveraging regional demand and adapting to local preferences, a growing number of Chinese manufacturers are shifting from simply exporting products to offering tailored solutions and localized innovation.
\n
For instance, Ningbo Weiyun Electronic Co, a hardware manufacturer based in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has tailored its research and innovation to the practical needs of Southeast Asian consumers, tackling issues such as differing electrical plug standards across the region.
\n
"This targeted approach has earned our products strong recognition and popularity in markets such as Malaysia and Thailand," said Chai Jianlu, Ningbo Weiyun's president. "For the next step, we will actively expand into the Philippines and Vietnam, seeking more diversified and sustainable growth opportunities."
\n
According to data from Ningbo Customs, Ningbo Weiyun's exports to ASEAN reached nearly 42 million yuan between January and August, up 18.3 percent year-on-year.
\n
Luxshare Intelligent Manufacture Technology (Changshu) Co, a Changshu, Jiangsu province-based electronic components manufacturer, saw its exports to ASEAN exceed 240 million yuan during the January-August period, up nearly 400 percent year-on-year, said Nanjing Customs.
\n
"We have paid close attention to the rising consumer demand in Southeast Asian markets. Since the beginning of the year, with accessories for consumer products such as mobile phones, earphones and smartwatches entering large-scale mass production in the region, our exports to ASEAN countries, especially Vietnam, have grown rapidly," said Xiao Lu, the company's manager for Customs affairs.
\n
Alongside the trade growth, improved regional connectivity projects are strengthening China-ASEAN economic ties. The China-Laos Railway, for example, handled over 3.43 million metric tons of imports and exports in the first seven months, with a trade value exceeding 15.4 billion yuan, up 6 percent and 41 percent on a yearly basis, respectively, said Kunming Customs. At present, the China-Laos Railway serves 19 countries, with the range of import and export goods expanding from over 500 in 2022 to more than 3,600 varieties now.
\n
Contact the writers at zhongnan@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"description": "

The most significant shift in China's textile market lies in a strategic pivot by domestic brands, from cost-driven production to prioritizing sustainability and innovation, and this transformation, coupled with China's robust industrial foundation, has created a unique "innovation ecosystem "that is reshaping global textile dynamics, according to Rohit Aggarwal, CEO of Lenzing Group.
\n
In an exclusive interview during the 2025 Intertextile Shanghai Expo autumn edition held earlier this month, Aggarwal outlined Lenzing's strategic alignment with this trend, showcasing the company's "Big Five Fibers" and newly launched "Lenzing Pro" digital platform at the expo.
\n
The Austrian fiber giant's exhibition area, featuring 43 value chain partners, underscored how global innovators are supporting China's textile upgrade amid supportive government policies and evolving consumer demands.
\n
"We're witnessing a remarkable shift in China's textile landscape — domestic brands are not only increasing their collaborations with innovative material suppliers like Lenzing but are also elevating their product offerings to unprecedented levels of quality and sophistication," Aggarwal said.
\n
He emphasized China's two key strengths as being critical to this transformation: "China's super-large market scale and solid textile industry foundation are the 'dual engines' of the global industrial chain."
\n
This shift comes as China accelerates its green manufacturing agenda. The State Council's approval of an action plan for advancing the green and low-carbon development of manufacturing (2025-27) emphasizes advanced green technologies and circular economy practices, creating a policy environment that aligns with Lenzing's sustainability-focused strategy.
\n
Aggarwal highlighted China's unique capability to rapidly commercialize innovations.
\n
"When we launch special specifications of Tencel brand or Lenzing Ecovero brand, Chinese enterprises can efficiently complete the transformation from fibers to end-products," he said.
\n
This efficiency has made China more than just a market for Lenzing — it's an "innovation community," as described by Aggarwal, where "the efficiency and innovation of enterprises here are the core driving forces for us to deepen our presence".
\n
Lenzing's commitment to China's green transition is exemplified by its Nanjing facility, which has operated entirely on renewable electricity since 2023, reducing annual carbon emissions by 100,000 metric tons.
\n
"From a financial perspective, the Chinese market is at the core priority in the group's global capital allocation," said Nico Reiner, CFO of Lenzing Group. "The investment return rate of the Chinese market is good. The cost control and profit level of production bases in Nanjing and other places have brought more stable cash flow and asset appreciation. More importantly, the Chinese market has strong growth resilience, and the demand for sustainable and high-end fibers has maintained good growth, providing long-term certainty for capital allocation and supporting future revenue and profit growth."
\n
heqi@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

Payment terms begin once products are accepted and inspected, and the payment period must not exceed 60 calendar days.
\n
Regarding payment methods, the guidelines encourage the use of cash payments, such as bank transfers and wire transfers, as well as banker's acceptance (BA). For small and medium-sized suppliers, only cash or BAs are recommended.
\n
The initiative further said that if the unit price of supplies has not yet been agreed upon, the buyer shall make an advance payment based on a certain proportion of the most recent contract price or the agreed development price. In principle, this proportion should be no less than 80 percent of the latest contract price — or 50 percent of the development price.
\n
It also encourages automakers and suppliers to build long-term and stable partnerships, with each contract carrying a validity period of no less than one year.
\n
The initiative is intended to support the implementation of revised regulations on ensuring payments to small and medium-sized enterprises, released by the State Council, China's Cabinet, earlier this year.
\n
In June, 17 leading automakers nationwide publicly pledged to support the central initiative and keep supplier payment periods within 60 days.
\n
This time around, the 17 major domestic automakers — including GAC Group, Seres, Changan Auto, Dongfeng Motor, Xiaomi and Li Auto — have to date voiced support for the new CAAM guidelines, saying they will actively implement the initiative to drive closer cooperation and healthier growth across the supply chain.
\n
"Timely and full payments to suppliers is the most basic form of respect for partners and a key to ensuring supply chain stability," said Xiaomi in its statement on Monday, adding the company will keep honoring its commitment to settle accounts within 60 days.
\n
Changan Auto said it has fully honored the 60-day payment commitment through an innovative "delivery date plus 10 days settlement" model, which has also created a standardized and efficient payment process for suppliers.
\n
GAC Group also noted in its latest statement that it has strictly adhered to the principle of "no more than 60 days" for supplier payments for 28 years since its establishment. The company has also built a comprehensive management system covering order issuance, inspection, settlement and payment, while leveraging digital platforms to ensure full-process transparency and prevent any form of payment delays.
\n
lijiaying@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

Ye forecasts that the surge in overseas demand could continue until 2026, assuming a detente in US-China relations and a resolution to the tariff situation.
\n
He also cautioned about the potential for destructive price competition.
\n
"Some regions overseas are already showing signs of price wars," Ye noted, warning that such "irrational price reductions" could erode the profitability of Chinese companies operating in overseas markets.
\n
According to Sun Chuanwang, a professor at the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, as the energy storage market in China becomes increasingly crowded, domestic companies are shifting their focus to international expansion, with emerging economies becoming a key target.
\n
This strategic move allows Chinese firms to leverage their technological advances and cost-competitive solutions in markets where demand is growing rapidly and competition is less intense, he said.
\n
Sun suggests that this outward push is driven by a combination of factors, including heightened domestic competition, supportive government policies and the growing need for reliable and affordable energy storage solutions in developing countries.
\n
These emerging economies often face unique challenges, such as unreliable grid infrastructure and a growing demand for electricity, making them ideal candidates for the deployment of energy storage technologies, he said.
\n
According to CITIC Securities, the overseas energy storage market is poised for a significant demand surge as countries transition to renewable energy and increase the proportion of renewables in their energy mix.
\n
Chinese companies hold a competitive advantage in the global energy storage supply chain, particularly in battery cells and energy storage systems, where they continue to gain market share, analysts at CITIC Securities said in a recent research note.
\n
However, many overseas energy storage system integrators are heavily reliant on Chinese supply chains, leaving them vulnerable to potential policy uncertainties and operational challenges, it said.
\n
The current market dynamics present a compelling investment opportunity in the overseas energy storage sector, particularly for leading Chinese manufacturers involved in battery cells, power conversion systems and system integration, the analysts added.
\n
The surge in demand has been further amplified by the implementation of market-based pricing for renewable energy in China, which incentLine truncated

"title": "016LIFE - Scientists join forces to protect Marco Polo sheep",
|
||||
"description": "

At over 4,000 meters above sea level, Chinese and Tajik scientists braved biting winds as they followed the tracks of Marco Polo sheep. When a herd appeared along the snow line, the team quickly set up a spotting scope and began recording data.
\n
For the joint expedition team, this was a typical day in the high Pamirs.
\n
The Marco Polo sheep, made famous in the medieval travelogue of its namesake, is considered a flagship species of the plateau.
\n
"Whenever we encounter suitable habitats for Marco Polo sheep, we stop and observe. Sometimes it's just a few sheep we see, sometimes dozens. Each sighting matters for our research," said Yang Weikang, a researcher at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
\n
Stretching across Central Asia, the Pamirs' harsh conditions of radiation, thin air and cold have shaped rare, stress-resistant genetic resources.
\n
Recognizing that wildlife conservation transcends borders, China and Tajikistan launched the Sino-Tajikistan Joint Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Biological Resources in March 2022.Since then, the lab has organized joint expeditions, hosted international conferences, trained graduate students and carried out cross-border projects with scientists from several countries.
\n
"We go on expeditions about once a quarter, usually lasting more than 10 days," said Wang Muyang, another researcher at XIEG. "We record species, altitude and numbers during surveys, and also interview herders to learn about local wildlife distribution."
\n
The team gathers not only sightings but also feces, which reveal dietary habits. "Through feces, we can analyze dietary composition and determine which plants animals prefer," Yang said. "This helps us design targeted conservation measures for endangered species."
\n
Joint surveys have revealed that Marco Polo sheep habitats are increasingly fragmented, with border fences blocking migration routes. "Fragmented habitats cause population decline," Yang said. "We have recommended modifying border fences to ensure cross-border migration corridors remain open."
\n
The lab has submitted advisory reports to the Tajik government and called for regional cooperation to safeguard the species.
\n
While Yang and Wang track wildlife, Li Wenjun's team focuses on plants. Year-round, they collect seeds and specimens, noting coordinates, elevation and habitat type.
\n
"From a distance, we look like beggars; up close, we are scientists," Li joked. "We carry woven plastic bags because we collect so many specimens."
\n
Specimens are dried immediately to prevent decay. "It's normal for us to work until 3 or 4 am," Li said. "The first day is easy, but later the workload piles up. If we don't process leaves the same day, they wilt."
\n
Li and his team are also building a multilingual plant diversity database for the arid zones of Central Asia, designed to close gaps in biodiversity data-sharing and conservation efforts. The database will integrate Chinese, English, and Russian and create an open-access platform to support cross-disciplinary research and biodiversity mapping, Li said.
\n
"We plan to complete the digitization of one million plant specimens by 2026, establishing a comprehensive biodiversity database," he said. By 2030, the project aims to expand its network in Belt and Road countries, developing into a global hub of arid-zone plant diversity data to support climate adaptation and sustainable development policies.
\n
"By digitally managing the plant specimens preserved in herbariums, we can use big data analysis to uncover trends in plant development amid climate change," said Zhang Yuanming, director of the institute. "We are building an arid region bio-resource bank — like a Noah's Ark for life in drylands."
\n
Fieldwork is not easy. Researchers often sleep on dried dung in sheep pens, which they say is warm and bug-free. Language barriers complicate matters further, as conversations shift between Chinese, Russian, and Tajik, relying on hand-held translators that often struggle in remote areas.
\n
Still, the hardships are outweighed by the thrill of discovery. "Days can pass without seeing an animal, then suddenly a herd appears — it feels like discovering a new world," Wang said.
\n
Shared meals help too. "In the field, naan bread with chili sauce is unbeatable," said Chen Chen, another team member.
\n
The joint lab now also partners with institutions in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In August 2024, Chinese scientists launched a major expedition in Uzbekistan to address the Aral Sea's ecological crisis. &qLine truncated

With the world in "a new period of turbulent transformation, human society is in more need than ever of drawing wisdom from history", Gao said.
\n
He added that historians from across the world should "scientifically analyze" the evolution of different civilizations to help "answer the questions of the world, the people, and our time".
\n
The comments come amid rising geopolitical tensions and a broader debate about the dominance of Western historical narratives. Under the theme Civilizational Legacy and Historical Paths, the forum's goal was to promote academic exchange and cooperation within the global history discipline and to drive innovative development in historical research.
\n
The opening ceremony also featured speeches from Rebecca Lemos Igreja, secretary-general of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, and Kostas Gouliamos, an Ordinary Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and last year's recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award.
\n
Igreja emphasized the power of narrative and inclusivity in historical scholarship, and argued for a more pluralistic approach to writing world history, one that actively recovers marginalized and often-forgotten narratives.
\n
As history is closely linked to the present and future, telling past stories accurately is greatly significant for different countries to cooperate in facing challenges, according to Igreja.
\n
Praising the forum for creating an essential platform for scholars to overcome geographic and language barriers, Igreja believes the event will deepen mutual understanding and cooperation.
\n
Gouliamos framed civilization as the essential catalyst for human progress, which has always advanced through dialogue and exchange. With humankind more interconnected than ever before, he said, different civilizations need to understand and learn from each other, and jointly push humanity toward a more balanced and inclusive future.
\n
He advocated for interdisciplinary research, combining history, archaeology, anthropology, and sociology, and building a more inclusive global narrative with respect for our shared heritage and diversity.
\n
Beyond the opening ceremony, the forum's agenda featured in-depth parallel sessions, where scholars delved into seven key subthemes — Pluralistic Models of Civilizational Origins and Development; The Evolution of Civilizations and the Formation of Historical Paths; Modern China and the World in the Context of Intercivilizational Encounters; Civilizational Diversity and Different Historical Paths; Intercivilizational Exchange and Mutual Learning: Historical Process and Contemporary Significance; Cultural Integration and Dialogue for a Global Community of Shared Future; and Historical Trajectories and Future of Human Civilization. These discussions allowed for a rich collaboration of ideas and perspectives from every corner of the globe.
\n
The event was also organized by several of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' constituent research institutes, including the institutes of archaeology, ancient history, modern history, world history, borderland studies, and historical theory, as well as the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
\n
wangqian@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"description": "

China will firmly defend its interests and support the multilateral trading system, while urging the United States to engage more in equal dialogue to ease friction and seek common ground in pursuit of a more open global economy, said analysts and business leaders on Sunday.
\n
As He Lifeng, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and vice-premier of the State Council, China's Cabinet, leads a delegation in Madrid, Spain for talks with US counterparts from Sunday to Wednesday, market watchers said the meetings are aimed at addressing long-standing friction and exploring constructive solutions.
\n
The two sides will discuss economic and trade issues, such as unilateral tariff measures adopted by the US, the abuse of export controls and the TikTok issue, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
\n
Wang Wen, dean of Renmin University of China's Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, said the previous three rounds of trade talks between China and the US signaled willingness on both sides to find common ground, bringing much-needed optimism to international markets.
\n
"With global economic momentum faltering, the international community is watching closely the talks in Spain, hoping both sides can translate dialogue into more substantive progress that would benefit not just the two nations, but all," he said.
\n
Li Yong, a senior research fellow at the Beijing-based China Association of International Trade, said that under such circumstances, effectively addressing topics such as unilateral US tariff measures and the abuse of export controls is essential to fostering smoother China-US economic and trade relations, particularly in rebuilding trust and stabilizing cooperation.
\n
Chen Wenling, former chief economist at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, said the path to productive dialogue requires mutual respect and effort. She warned that Washington's recent unilateral moves — including a fresh wave of sanctions against Chinese companies — risk undermining the very foundation of engagement.
\n
These are not good-faith gestures, but pressure tactics that Beijing will firmly oppose rather than concede to, Chen said.
\n
"China always remains open to dialogues with the US, but only based on mutual respect and equal standing. The onus is now on Washington to decide whether it will approach the negotiating table as an equal partner seeking mutually acceptable solutions," she added.
\n
On Saturday, the Ministry of Commerce responded to a US move to add multiple Chinese entities to its export control list. A spokesperson said that China firmly opposes the move, which targets Chinese entities in the semiconductor, biotechnology, aerospace, and commercial and trade logistics sectors.
\n
Noting that the two countries are scheduled to hold economic and trade talks in Spain starting on Sunday, the spokesperson said the US decision to sanction Chinese businesses raises questions about its true intentions.
\n
The Ministry of Commerce also announced on the same day that it has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of certain analog integrated circuit chips originating in the US, and it launched an anti-discrimination investigation into relevant US measures targeting China's integrated circuit sector.
\n
Following these moves, the Beijing-based China Semiconductor Industry Association issued a statement stressing that the healthy development of the semiconductor industry requires a fair competitive environment.
\n
The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products called for domestic companies to boost innovation, strengthen industrial coordination and deepen global cooperation, while warning that unilateral measures risk disrupting international industrial and supply chains.
\n
John Quelch, a professor at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, said: "The recent trend toward decoupling, particularly in technology and supply chains, reflects a deeper anxiety about dependence and vulnerability. But we must not lose sight of the broader truth: China and the US remain deeply intertwined."
\n
He said the two sides must search for new equilibrium, one that balances competition with cooperation, and national interest with global responsibility.
\n
Olaf Schmidt, vice-president of Messe Frankfurt Exhibition, a German trade fair and event organizer, said his company has always championed global free trade, believing that it is vital to connect people, products and markets.
\n
Contact the writers at zhongnan@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "004CHINA - Pre-made dish debate heats up",
|
||||
"description": "

A recent controversy has drawn widespread public attention to premade dishes in China, prompting calls for greater standardization and transparency in the industry. Central to the discussion are concerns over food safety and consumers' right to be fully informed.
\n
The debate began when celebrity entrepreneur Luo Yonghao, known for his outspoken views and livestreaming influence, took to social media site Sina Weibo on Wednesday to criticize the popular Xibei restaurant chain.
\n
Luo wrote that after a recent meal with colleagues, he found most dishes were pre-made and costly, calling the experience "disgusting" and urging the government to require restaurants to clearly indicate whenever pre-made dishes are used. The post quickly went viral, garnering millions of comments and sparking industry discussion.
\n
Xibei founder Jia Guolong responded by emphasizing that the chain uses pre-preparation techniques but does not serve pre-made meals. "Not a single dish in Xibei outlets is a pre-made dish," Jia said.
\n
The chain opened its kitchens to media for a firsthand look at operations, but the distinction between pre-made dishes and pre-preparation processes remained unclear, fueling further debate. Jia described the controversy as "the biggest external crisis" in Xibei's history, noting a sharp decline in daily revenue across nearly 400 outlets over several days.
\n
Despite widespread adoption in large chain restaurants, pre-made dishes remain controversial for several reasons: small-scale producers may fail to meet food safety standards; consumers lack clarity on what constitutes a pre-made dish; and some businesses mislead patrons by charging for "freshly made" dishes that are actually reheated pre-made products.
\n
Regulatory notices encourage restaurants to clearly indicate their use of pre-made dishes to ensure consumer rights to information and choice.
\n
According to a 2024 notice issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation and other authorities, pre-made dishes are pre-packaged food products made from one or more edible agricultural ingredients, with or without seasonings and without added preservatives. They undergo industrial pre-processing — such as mixing, marinating, forming, frying, baking, boiling or steaming — and may include seasoning packets. These products are intended to be consumed after heating or cooking and must be produced, stored, transported and sold according to the conditions specified on their labels.
\n
Fresh vegetables or ingredients that have only undergone simple processing, including washing, peeling or cutting, as well as ready-to-eat foods — such as salads, convenience meals, steamed buns, pastries, hamburgers, sandwiches, pizzas and central kitchen-prepared dishes delivered to chain outlets — are not considered pre-made dishes. Heating refers to simple reheating before consumption, while cooking indicates thorough preparation of partially processed ingredients.
\n
The notice outlined measures to strengthen food safety supervision. These include enforcing producer responsibility, verifying raw materials, regulating food additives, revising production licensing, enhancing inspections and promoting clear labeling in restaurants.
\n
Earlier, officials from the State Administration for Market Regulation said pre-made dishes do not require preservatives because cold storage, freezing and sterilization ensure safety, while aligning with consumer expectations and risk control requirements.
\n
Tan Guijun, director of the Nutrition Department at Tianjin First Central Hospital, told Xinhua News Agency that while fresh ingredients retain nutrients more fully and are generally more aligned with the body's needs, this does not mean pre-made dishes should be dismissed entirely. As long as production, transportation, storage and cooking processes comply with relevant food safety standards, premade dishes can adequately meet the body's requirements for calories and nutrition.
\n
According to previous media reports, consumers and industry insiders said the controversy reflects broader concerns and underscores the need to balance industry efficiency with consumer protection, with transparency, regulation and innovation shaping the sector's future.
\n
luowangshu@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

"description": "

\n
Once it opens its new home in 2027, the Tsinghua University Science Museum will become China's first comprehensive scientific and research-oriented institution.
\n
The museum, which is currently occupying space in the university's Mong Man-wai Humanities Building, aims to showcase major scientific discoveries and technological inventions made throughout the nation's history, with a special emphasis on Tsinghua's contributions, according to Wu Guosheng, the museum's director.
\n
The museum will serve not only as an exhibition space but also as an educational platform, encouraging students and the public to engage deeply with the history and spirit of scientific exploration, Wu said.
\n
"A great university must have a great museum," he said, noting the role such institutions play in higher learning and public engagement. "Museums legitimize the cultural activities of modern society. Science museums, in particular, preserve and celebrate the achievements of the Industrial Revolution and subsequent scientific progress."
\n
Despite its heavy investment in science education, China has long lacked a comprehensive science museum, Wu said, adding that Tsinghua aims to fill that gap.
\n
The museum will be more than just an exhibition venue. It will also serve as a dynamic educational space that encourages cross-disciplinary learning and inspires a deeper appreciation of science among students and the public, he said.
\n
The museum has already become a platform for student-led initiatives. Kong Weiyi, a doctoral student at the School of Life Sciences at Tsinghua, developed an online exhibition titled Dating Across the Nth Power: Models of Atoms, Molecules, and Crystals, which began as a class assignment.
\n
With support from the museum, her project grew into a public-facing digital display featuring 30 scientific models. The exhibition combines hand-drawn illustrations with historical narratives, making complex concepts such as molecular geometry and crystallography accessible and engaging.
\n
"I hope visitors can rediscover the wonder of these structures, whether they're familiar with the science or just starting to learn," Kong said. "Maintaining curiosity is what truly matters."
\n
The museum's volunteer team plays an important role in engaging the public. Yang Mingfan, now pursuing a master's degree at the Department of the History of Science, began volunteering during his undergraduate years hoping to improve his communication skills.
\n
"I was initially very shy — I couldn't even make eye contact," he recalled. "But explaining exhibits to diverse audiences pushed me to learn more and speak with greater confidence."
\n
One memorable moment came during a Copernicus-themed exhibition when a visitor asked detailed questions about an instrument used to measure lunar parallax — the apparent shift in the moon's position when viewed from two different locations on Earth — which Yang could not immediately answer.
\n
He later researched the topic and followed up with the visitor through WeChat. Meanwhile, another visitor became a volunteer himself.
\n
"It made me realize that being a science communicator means continuous learning and connecting with people," Yang said.
\n
Another volunteer named Liu Dibo, a doctoral candidate at the School of Environment, shares stories of scientific perseverance at the museum. He often speaks about the early researchers at Tsinghua's Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology, who conducted groundbreaking work with minimal resources — using modified thermos flasks for liquid nitrogen and medical clamps to handle radioactive materials.
\n
"These stories aren't just history; they're a source of inspiration," Liu said. "They teach us about resilience, ingenuity and putting the nation's needs first."
\n
The museum has also made an impression on young visitors. During the National Day holiday in 2021, a young boy left a hand-drawn national flag on the display cabinet of the Tianhe-1 supercomputer after learning about the scientists behind it — a gesture Liu described as a symbol of how the scientific spirit passes from one generation to the next.
\n
The permanent museum will be located between the Tsinghua University Art Museum and the Academy of Art & Design. It will include a main hall, a Tsinghua history hall and a special exhibitions gallery, totaling about 6,000 square meters.
\n
Until it opens, the museum will continue to hold temporary exhibitions in the humanities building.
\n
Wu envisions the museum as a catalyst for broader change.<Line truncated

"title": "005CHINA - Xinjiang county's cotton fields fully mechanized",
|

"description": "

\n
A cotton harvester picks cotton in the fields of Daheyanzi town, Jinghe county, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, last year.
\n
Earlier in September, in the vast cotton fields of Jinghe county in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, no workers were seen bent under the sun. Instead, drones had just finished spraying defoliants to hasten boll opening and leaf fall.
\n
In about 10 days, harvesting machines will roll in, completing a cotton production cycle that is now fully mechanized.
\n
Jinghe, located in the Bortala Mongolian autonomous prefecture, is a major producer of early-maturing cotton in northern Xinjiang. In 2024, the county's demonstration fields produced 11 metric tons of cotton per hectare, setting a national record.
\n
Ochirbat, head of the Bortala agriculture and rural affairs bureau, said mechanization in planting, managing and harvesting cotton in the county has reached 100 percent, greatly reducing labor needs.
\n
In the past, tending 1,040 hectares of cotton in Shartur village, which is part of Jinghe, required large numbers of hired hands for irrigation, spraying and picking. Now, mechanization has shortened the harvest period from 20 days to just five, and planting efficiency has improved by 40 percent, Ochirbat said.
\n
Combined with government subsidies for target price and premium cotton, farmers' average net income per hectare has doubled in five years, from 4,500 yuan ($632.20) to more than 9,000 yuan. Most of the 130 households in the village now earn at least 30,000 yuan more annually, according to the bureau.
\n
"Many farmers lease their land to cooperatives and larger growers. Freed from heavy farm work, they are opening restaurants, shops and homestays, or working in textile enterprises at local industrial parks," Ochirbat said.
\n
Some have joined the growing rural tourism and garden economy, planting vegetables and fruits in their courtyards and diversifying their income sources, he added.
\n
"The biggest change is labor savings," said Xuan Baolin, a veteran operator with a farm machinery cooperative in Jinghe.
\n
A high-horsepower tractor at the cooperative can sow far more in a day than manual labor ever could, while a harvester has replaced hundreds of pickers. As a result, labor costs have dropped by more than 60 percent annually, Xuan said.
\n
"A decade ago, 4.67 hectares required a dozen people working 50 days to pick the cotton. This year, one harvester can handle at least 33.3 hectares in 10 hours."
\n
Meanwhile, large-scale cotton farmers in the village are benefiting from intelligent technologies. The 10-hectare fields of Ding Hongshan are equipped with seeders guided by Beidou satellite navigation, smart water-fertilizer systems and drones for crop protection.
\n
"In the past, it took five days of manual labor to irrigate once a week. Now I can control irrigation with a smartphone app, saving more than 30 percent of water and cutting labor costs," he said.
\n
The yield of his fields in 2025 is expected to reach an above-average 7.5 tons per hectare, with 85 percent classified as high-quality cotton, giving him a net income of around 90,000 yuan after subsidies.
\n
Technology upgrades have lifted village yields to more than 6 tons per hectare. Shartur's cotton output value is forecast to exceed 20 million yuan in 2025.
\n
According to the bureau, the prefecture has planted nearly 106,000 hectares of cotton in 2025, and the total output of lint cotton is expected to exceed 220,000 tons, 18,000 tons more than in 2024.
\n
Ochirbat said the region will further improve mechanized harvesting, enhance the quality of defoliation and picking, and promote domestically made harvesters.
\n
zhaoyimeng@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "006CHINA - Permanent exhibition in Liuzhou city honors role of Flying Tigers",

"description": "

Representatives from China and the United States attend the opening ceremony of a permanent exhibition on the Flying Tigers in Liuzhou city, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, on Sept 7.
\n
A permanent exhibition honoring the Flying Tigers opened in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, on Sept 7. The exhibit revisits the role played by China and the United States in fighting side by side against fascism during World War II.
\n
The American Volunteer Group — widely known as the Flying Tigers — was established by US General Claire Chennault as part of the Chinese Air Force and was stationed in Liuzhou between 1942 and 1945.
\n
Liuzhou served as a pivotal base for the Flying Tigers in South China and is home to some of the most well-preserved airfields used by the group.
\n
Housed within the Liuzhou Military Museum, the exhibition, spanning over 6,000 square meters, is open to the public free of charge and comprises five thematic sections showcasing more than 1,000 precious historical relics. Through a rich collection of physical materials, vivid reproductions and advanced techniques, the exhibition, for the first time, comprehensively and clearly maps the complete historical context of the Flying Tigers' joint fight with Chinese military personnel and civilians.
\n
Jeffrey Greene, chairman of the Sino-American Aviation Heritage Foundation and the American Flying Tigers Legacy Foundation, highlighted the profound friendship forged between the Chinese and US peoples amid the darkest days of WWII.
\n
"Throughout the war, whenever an American airman was shot down or forced to land in Japanese-occupied territory, they were nearly always rescued by the Chinese people — unless captured immediately by Japanese forces," he said.
\n
This story of extraordinary friendship, rooted in mutual sacrifice and a deeply human narrative of love and fidelity, has become more than just a bridge between the two nations, he added.
\n
Chen Gang, Party secretary of Guangxi, said the region intends to use the exhibition's opening to leverage Flying Tigers-related exhibits, venues and cultural relics as bonds to actively advance China-US youth exchange programs, build Flying Tigers friendship schools and strengthen nongovernmental friendly exchanges.
\n
Yang Wanming, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said that China-US cooperation during WWII demonstrates that people of different countries can transcend differences and work together in the face of common challenges.
\n
"Today, as the world undergoes unprecedented, accelerated changes and enters a new period of turbulence and transformation with mounting uncertainties, humanity stands at a historical crossroads once again," he said.
\n
"Only through global cooperation and collective efforts can we build a peaceful and prosperous world."
\n
Gail Baumgartner, 73, whose father was Flying Tigers veteran Joseph C. Cooper, has spent years sharing her father's story with younger generations.
\n
Liuzhou Huxi Middle School joined the Flying Tigers Friendship School and Youth Leadership Program in 2023. That the draft resolution was passed by 142 votes in favor, 10 against, and 12 abstentions speaks volumes about the international community's will on how the Palestinian question should be settled.
\n
The declaration is the outcome of an international conference held in July at the UN Headquarters in New York, organized by France and Saudi Arabia, which resumes later this month.
\n
Presented in great detail, the declaration and the addendum to it show how it is envisioned that the Palestinian State under the leadership of the Palestinian Authority should be established, how Gaza should be reconstructed, and how a unified Palestinian State should maintain neighborly relations with Israel.
\n
France and Saudi Arabia and the cochairs of the conference's working groups should now work on making concrete steps toward realizing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of all hostages, the return of Palestinian prisoners, the delivery of aid at scale throughout the Gaza Strip in coordination with the UN, and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2735.
\n
As stated in the declaration, Gaza as an integral part of the Palestinian State must be reunified with the West Bank, and the governance, law enforcement and security in all Palestinian territories lie solely with the Palestinian Authority, with appropriate international support.
\n
The declaration calls for the Palestinian Authority to be supported, including through the necessary disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of the members of Hamas and other Palestinian factions, within an agreed mechanism and timeline with international partners.
\n
But, however detailed the measures the declaration has mapped out, it is an unbinding document whose implementation requires the cooperation of Israel, Hamas and other stakeholders.
\n
To put it into effect requires the international community to make concerted efforts to implement the declaration. Most urgently, diplomatic endeavors should be made by relevant UN authorities and other major countries to persuade Israel to open the crossings to Gaza and make sure that humanitarian aid can reach those Palestinian people in desperate need of food and daily necessities.
\n
The mediation efforts of Egypt, Qatar and the United States should continue with the aim of bringing about an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and then bringing Hamas and Israel to the negotiation table for a deal on the release of all hostages and the return of Palestinian prisoners.
\n
It should go without saying that nothing can be done regarding the establishment of a unified Palestinian State without a ceasefire in Gaza, which along with humanitarian assistance for the people in the enclave, is the top priority.
\n
Both Israel and all Palestinian organizations should be persuaded that continuing their attacks on each other is a vicious cycle that will hinder the realization of lasting peace and prosperity for both the Israeli and Palestinian people as well as the harmonious development of the Middle East.
\n
It is wishful thinking for the Israeli or Palestinian side to believe that it can eradicate the other. Peaceful coexistence as two neighboring countries is the sole solution to the Palestinian question.
\n
China has long supported the "two-state solution" and maintained that the establishment of a unified Palestinian State is necessary for the permanent settlement of the Palestinian question and the realization of lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
\n
With more countries, those in Europe in particular, pledging to recognize a Palestinian State, the major countries should intensify their diplomatic efforts to do whatever they can for the "two-state solution" to materialize.
\n

",

"title": "008COMMENT - Dual carbon goals call for systematic actions",
|
||||
"description": "

Editor's note: With less than half a year remaining before the conclusion of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), China is on track to exceed its nonfossil energy consumption targets. The share of electricity in end-use energy consumption has already risen to around 30 percent. Zhou Dadi, former director of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, spoke to the 21st Century Business Herald about the achievements of the 14th Five-Year Plan in energy transition as well as the priorities in the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30). Below are excerpts from the interview. The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.
\n
The policy framework of the 15th Five-Year Plan will continue to adhere to the core vision of the dual carbon goals. China aims to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030. The success of its energy transition hinges on whether clean energy can build cost advantages and market competitiveness. Only if there is an economically viable low-carbon energy supply system can fossil fuels be genuinely replaced.
\n
China has made remarkable progress in new energy development, but coal consumption remains a transitional challenge due to its economic viability.
\n
To achieve the carbon peak in the 15th Five-Year Plan period coal use must be reduced through targeted policies, building on existing measures to control its consumption.
\n
Coal, oil and natural gas should peak in stages during the next five years, followed by sustained and substantial reductions in the medium to long term.
\n
The primary pathway to achieving carbon neutrality before 2060 is to replace fossil fuels with nonfossil energy-based electricity — solar, wind, hydropower, nuclear and energy storage — potentially approaching near 100 percent substitution. The power system must achieve zero-carbon transformation ahead of schedule, with both primary and end-use energy highly electrified.
\n
Besides, it is important to advance green, low-carbon and rational consumption patterns. With the continued growth of electricity demand driven by the digital economy and artificial intelligence, the solution is not to simply restrict energy consumption, but to promote energy-saving technologies, enhance efficiency and advocate reasonable consumption in order to avoid wasting energy.
\n
The focus of energy policy should now shift to structural optimization and low-carbon transformation. There is broad consensus in the international community that developing clean energy and promoting green, low-carbon transformation can address the problem of climate change.
\n
In addition to restructuring the energy system, electrification in key sectors such as transportation and construction must also be accelerated. With rapid technological progress and declining costs, batteries, electric vehicles and electrified machinery are quickly gaining market share. Since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the electrification of transport has pushed the oil and gas industry into transition, and China's refined oil consumption has already peaked ahead of schedule.
\n
This peaking and subsequent decline in refined oil consumption have put pressure on the petrochemical industry to pursue its own low-carbon transformation. In the future, zero-carbon synthetic fuels and chemicals, based on green hydrogen and biomass, will be gradually developed.
\n
These are expected to gradually replace current oil — and gas-based petrochemicals starting from 2040.
\n
For the residential sector, high levels of electrification will be the main pathway for a green, low-carbon transformation. Heating systems will shift from coal — and gas-based centralized heating to distributed electric heating, including direct electric heating and heat pumps. Electrification in cooking is also emerging, with electric stoves increasingly available.
\n
The potential rooftop solar capacity of urban and rural buildings is estimated at nearly 3 billion kilowatts, but this resource remains largely untapped. Significant progress is expected in this area during the upcoming five-year plan.
\n

",

"title": "009VIEWS - What the new proposal means for Cambodia",
|
||||
"description": "

The author is a research associate at Asian Vision Institute, a think tank based in Phnom Penh.
\n
Amid a divided and uncertain world, President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Governance Initiative at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin in order to build a more just and equitable global governance system.
\n
The GGI is the fourth landmark initiative proposed by President Xi since 2021, following the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative. Over the past few years, President Xi has been proposing global initiatives, so as to promote shared development, strengthen security, advance social progress, and improve governance.
\n
The timing of the latest proposal is important. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. An institution born after the war and established global rules and norms and facilitated good governance for decades, the UN today is struggling to deal with burning global issues.
\n
China's message is simple: if the existing global governance system has reached a crossroads, it is time for new ideas — one that focuses on multilateralism and South-South solidarity. China wants to make the GGI a channel for promoting fairer, more equitable governance.
\n
The five principles of the Global Governance Initiative, according to President Xi, are adhering to sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, practicing multilateralism, adopting a people-centric approach, and focusing on achieving real outcomes.
\n
The GGI could be later expanded to include digital, cyber and financial sovereignty, which would enable countries to prevent any foreign interference in their domestic matters.
\n
Also, with President Xi announcing at the Tianjin summit that China would accelerate the creation of an "SCO development bank", Beijing has shown non-Western development and governance models can be effective and result-oriented, too.
\n
The GGI is complementary in nature, as it is not aimed at imposing new rules but at ensuring that all countries, especially those from the Global South, are involved in global decision-making. In that sense, the GGI is an open and adaptive governance process that will evolve over time, shaped by regional dialogue and pragmatic needs.
\n
President Xi reiterated at the summit that "all countries, regardless of size, strength and wealth, are equal participants, decision-makers and beneficiaries in global governance". As such, small states can deepen their mutually beneficial relations with China.
\n
By framing development and governance as non-zero-sum activities, the GGI reinforces an inclusive logic: a country does not need to suppress another country (or other countries) to continue its peaceful rise.
\n
Cambodia can adopt the same approach to accelerate development and improve governance at home. Some initiatives were previously implemented in Cambodia through South-South platforms and extensive bilateral arrangements, such as the "ironclad friendship" between Cambodia and China.
\n
Sino-Cambodian relations have always been rooted in mutual respect for sovereignty. Hence, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has wholeheartedly welcomed the GGI.
\n
As a matter of fact, the GGI aligns with Phnom Penh's strategic preference for "win-win cooperation", where sovereign equality is maintained and development partnerships remain non-coercive.
\n
More importantly, the GGI would further consolidate Cambodia's long-standing relationship with China. During President Xi's state visit to Cambodia in April this year, the two sides reviewed the plan of action for building a community with a shared future in the new era.
\n
Despite the GGI being a global public good, China might need to address the negative narratives, strengthen finance and digitalization, promote people-centric development and emphasize that the initiative will pave the way for broader and forward-looking global cooperation and improve global governance, so as to convince the international community of its positive impact on the world. In fact, by being inclusive in nature, the GGI may appeal to countries seeking balance, respect, and autonomy.
\n
The GGI's future depends on how it is interpreted, received and implemented. But what is clear is that China is seeking, with the help of the rest of the Global South, to improve global governance.
\n
Moreover, the GGI signals that China wants all countries to play their due roles in setting the global agenda and making international rules.
\n
The views don't necessarily represent those of his institution and China Daily.
\n
</pLine truncated

"title": "010WORLD - Pentagon plans troops for Louisiana: Report",
|
||||
"description": "

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump's administration has drafted a proposal to deploy 1,000 Louisiana National Guard troops to conduct law enforcement operations in the state's urban centers, The Washington Post reported on Saturday, citing Pentagon planning documents it obtained.
\n
Trump has made crime a major focus of his administration, even as violent crime rates have fallen in many US cities. The crackdown has fueled legal concerns and spurred protests.
\n
Democratic leaders have said the massive deployments are more a show of power by Trump, rather than a serious effort to fight crime.
\n
Trump argues that crime is blighting US cities like Washington, and in recent weeks placed the US capital city's police department under direct federal control.
\n
More than a dozen residents of Shreveport, Louisiana, told Reuters they viewed any deployment as more of a political stunt than a serious crime-fighting solution, and a way for Trump to blunt criticism that he's only targeting Democratic-controlled cities and states.
\n
A Pentagon spokesperson did not comment in detail on the documents, but a spokesperson said, "Leaked documents should not be interpreted as policy. We will not discuss these plans through leaked documents, pre-decisional or otherwise."
\n
The planning documents, according to the Post, state that the plan would allow the military to supplement law enforcement in cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
\n
The Pentagon's plan outlines a mobilization lasting until Sept 30, 2026, though no start date was specified in the documents.
\n
Among the documents is an unsigned, undated draft memo from Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, which highlights the "unique advantage" of the Pentagon's proposed approach to law enforcement in Louisiana, according to the Post.
\n
The proposal, which hinges upon a request from Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a Republican, has not been confirmed as approved by federal or state officials, the Post reported.
\n
On Friday, Trump said he would send National Guard troops to Memphis, Tennessee.
\n
Memphis mayor said Saturday that Trump's TV announcement the day before was the first hard confirmation he received that the National Guard troops would be sent to the city on an anti-crime mission.
\n
Speaking on CNN, Mayor Paul Young said he learned the idea was under consideration when Republican Governor Bill Lee's office informed him earlier in the week.
\n

",
