"description": "

As the Pentagon is now reviewing the AUKUS security pact between the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, Canberra needs to decide whether it is still ready to push ahead with this US-led project that goes against its own national interests in many aspects.
\n
The security project that was initiated in 2021 allows the US and the UK to provide Australia with nuclear-powered Virginia-class submarines, alongside related sensitive technologies, with the end goal of Australia acquiring domestic production capabilities. The purported aim is to counter what the US and its allies perceive to be a "China threat" in the Asia-Pacific through enhanced trilateral security and defense collaboration.
\n
China has firmly opposed the plan since it was announced, saying it is driven by a Cold War mentality and serves only to increase tensions in the region. Besides, the transfer of nuclear-powered submarine reactors and a large amount of highly enriched uranium from nuclear-weapon states to a nonnuclear country constitutes grave nuclear proliferation risks.
\n
Now, with the current US administration's review of AUKUS being conducted to make sure it meets the "America First" agenda, the possibility has emerged that the project might be put on hold or even dropped as some analysts have predicted.
\n
Leading the review is Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon's undersecretary for defense policy, who has questioned the wisdom of "giving away" the US nuclear-powered submarines which he called the "crown jewels" of the US military arsenal. He also argued it is hard to support Canberra's procurement plan when the US' naval industrial base is struggling to meet its own submarine production targets.
\n
An advisor to the previous US administration on the AUKUS project on Monday also highlighted a wide range of problems that need to be addressed for it to proceed. In a joint paper authored with a former State Department official, Abraham Denmark pointed to the lagging US submarine production rates, high costs of AUKUS — it will cost Australia $240 billion over more than 30 years — and a shortage of skilled labor for submarine production in all three countries.
\n
All this means a moment of uncertainty in Washington, which may come as a chance for Canberra to reconsider and step away from the lopsided arrangement where the US calls the shots with the unilateral right to cancel any aspect of the deal.
\n
That AUKUS will only make Australia more dependent on other countries militarily and its defense strategies increasingly aligned with US interests also compromises Australia's defense sovereignty and national interests. Not to mention that in doing so it is making other countries' alleged rivals its own.
\n
This has prompted former Australian prime minister Paul Keating to express the hope the ongoing review "might very well be the moment Washington saves Australia from itself… from the most poorly conceived defense procurement program ever adopted by an Australian government".
\n
Indeed, deploying nuclear-powered submarines in Australia would disrupt the strategic balance in the Asia-Pacific region, impact the regional nuclear nonproliferation system, and set a bad precedent for nonnuclear countries to have nuclear submarines. Subsequently, other countries in the region may also consider deploying nuclear weapons, which increases the odds of an arms race and poses a serious threat to regional peace and stability.
\n
Under the plan, Australia will spend huge amounts of money on a navy transformation based on the false belief that China, its largest trading partner and export market for the past 16 years, "threatens" the country's security. The assumption, which has no historical or contemporary proof to support it, will only jeopardize the mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries.
\n
Canberra should come to terms with reality and exercise strategic autonomy in handling China-related issues. By keeping the momentum of the healthy development of Sino-Australian relations, it can better work with Beijing to improve the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries featuring deeper dialogue, greater mutual trust and expanded cooperation amid shifting global dynamics. Chinese tourists often have high spending power and are increasingly seeking unique, high-quality, and experiential travel, which aligns perfectly with Fiji's premium tourism offerings," he said, adding that Fiji's pristine natural beauty, cultural hospitality, and luxury resorts are major attractions for Chinese travelers.
\n
Fantasha Lockington, chief executive officer of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, the industry body representing hotels, resorts and other tourism stakeholders in Fiji, told China Daily that the Chinese market recorded "a strong recovery compared to the past few years", with more than 30,000 Chinese travelers visiting Fiji last year.
\n
Steady growth
\n
The momentum seen in the latest figures is encouraging for the sector as it showed steady growth, she said.
\n
"We see China as a vital partner for Fiji's tourism growth in the years ahead," Lockington said.
\n
Fiji's status as a visa-free destination for Chinese travelers on short-term visits and its increasing connectivity via Hong Kong also made it very convenient for those drawn to Fiji "for our white-sand beaches, world-class diving and snorkeling, honeymoon and wedding experiences, and warm Fijian hospitality", she said.
\n
"Many also enjoy the privacy of our islands, family-friendly resorts, and luxury small-group experiences."
\n
Thompson from Tourism Fiji said several initiatives are underway or being planned as this year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Fiji diplomatic ties, "a momentous occasion that we are celebrating wholeheartedly within the tourism sector".
\n
"We will continue to deepen our collaborative relationships with Chinese travel agencies, expanding our network and developing tailored travel packages specifically for Chinese tourists," he said.
\n
"Simultaneously, we will focus on the 'Fiji, Where Happiness Comes Naturally' brand philosophy, emphasizing themes of outdoor adventure to provide Chinese visitors with more personalized experiences," Thompson said.
\n
"In November 2025, Tourism Fiji, in partnership with Fiji Airways and other Fijian tourism stakeholders, will conduct a winter road show in key Chinese cities to showcase Fiji's unique travel offerings," he said.
\n
"Furthermore, we will continue our collaboration with Fiji Airways to enhance flight connectivity between China and Fiji, making travel to Fiji more convenient for Chinese tourists."
\n
Aware of the value that Chinese travelers place on ease of travel, familyLine truncated

Pretty sure no player would like (it), particularly me."
\n
Alas, Thompson was scheduled to face Corentin Moutet on Sunday — but did manage to win in four sets — as things got going at Flushing Meadows, where there will now be 15 days of singles competition instead of 14, and there's little doubt that more money from all sorts of sources was part of the calculus behind the change.
\n
"I'm not really a fan of it. I don't know why they had to make it even longer. Well, I know why they did it — they get to sell tickets for an extra day," said 2024 US Open runner-up Jessica Pegula, this year's No 4 seed, who beat Mayar Sherif 6-0, 6-4 on Sunday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium. "I'm not really for it. I don't think a lot of the players were for it, especially those who play the week before a Slam.
\n
"It makes everything a little longer and a little harder. I don't think a lot of players want that."
\n
Pegula cited the move by the US Tennis Association — which followed the French Tennis Federation's decision to begin on Sunday in 2006, and the Australian Open's move to do the same in 2024 — as an example of her sport's repeated failure to ask for, or follow up on, athletes' input. Wimbledon is now the lone major that starts on Monday.
\n
"A lot of times, they ask for player feedback, and, when we do (respond), they don't listen to anything we say," said Pegula, one of 20 players who signed a letter in March addressed to the people who run the Grand Slam events to ask for better communication, more contributions to player welfare and a higher share of revenue. "The way they go about announcing these things, sometimes players aren't aware."
\n
This also comes at a time that players have complained about the recent shift to longer non-Slam tournaments that last more than a week.
\n
Those in charge of tennis point to higher prize money that comes from those extended tournaments — and changes, such as the extra day, have coincided with increases in prize money, which is up to a record $85 million, including $5 million to each singles champion, at the US Open.
\n
USTA spokesman Brendan McIntyre said adding a 15th day of singles can not only "provide more fans the opportunity to see main draw singles competition in person, but also gives fans around the globe the opportunity to watch (on television) on a weekend day and night".
\n
No 6 seed Ben Shelton was the opening act in Ashe at noon on Sunday, and said before his 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse that he understood why tournaments would want an extra weekend day of ticket sales — and he was pleased to be on the side of the men's draw that went first.
\n
Still, there are players, such as Thompson, two-time US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe or Matteo Arnaldi of Italy, who said it's a mistake to set things up so that someone who makes a tournament debut on Sunday and wins wouldn't play again until Wednesday, a change to the every-other-day rhythm at the Slams.
\n
"I mean, I get it," Tiafoe, an American who is seeded 17th, said about the Sunday opening. "title": "005CHINA - University students find spirit as schools mark war anniversary",
|

"description": "

With this year's school opening season coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, many universities have incorporated wartime history, the spirit of resistance and patriotism into their opening ceremonies to kick off the new semester.
\n
At the Renmin University of China in Beijing, more than 3,000 undergraduates attended the opening ceremony on Monday. Chen Hong, granddaughter of war hero Zhao Yiman, delivered a keynote speech urging students to draw strength from the deeds of revolutionary martyrs and strive to become capable talent dedicated to national rejuvenation.
\n
A digital avatar of Zhao, whom Chen had never met, was presented on stage. Chen shared excerpts from her grandmother's family letter, noting that her father — the first student enrolled in the university's diplomacy department — had handwritten a copy of the letter for her.
\n
"I now stand where he once studied," she said. "I hope each of you will draw strength from these heroes and grow into pillars capable of strengthening the nation and achieving national rejuvenation."
\n
She added: "Dear students, always remember the difficult years of the Chinese people's resistance against Japanese aggression. Remember the countless martyrs like Zhao Yiman, who fought for national survival, renewal and human justice, and who now rest in the green hills and yellow earth beneath us."
\n
At Tsinghua University in Beijing, about 4,000 freshmen attended their opening ceremony on Thursday. President Li Luming reflected on the legacy of National Southwest Associated University, formed in 1937 during the war through the merger of Tsinghua University, Peking University and Nankai University. Located in Yunnan province under wartime conditions, Southwest Associated preserved China's educational heritage.
\n
Li said universities serve as vital vessels of cultural inheritance. During the war against Japanese aggression, more than 100 Chinese institutions relocated to the western and southern regions, preserving academic traditions and nurturing talent despite displacement and conflict. He noted that more than 1,100 Southwest Associated students enlisted in the military, and many lost their lives.
\n
"Southwest Associated remains a special chapter in Tsinghua's history. Its spirit is interwoven with Tsinghua's traditions and reflects the essence of our motto-'Self-Discipline and Social Commitment' — amid national peril," Li said.
\n
He encouraged students to uphold the spirit of the resistance war, inherit the legacy of the university, study diligently, pioneer innovation and demonstrate determination and excellence in serving national development and rejuvenation.
\n
Renmin freshman Wang Hongming comes from Yangquan, Shanxi province, a revolutionary base where the Hundred Regiments Offensive was launched 85 years ago.
\n
"From the first people's city founded by the Party to the first regular university established by the Party, I have followed its red footsteps and am deeply grateful for the passing on of the revolutionary spirit," he said.
\n
Wang said he hopes students heed the Party's guidance and take practical action to become pioneers and innovators. He urged his peers to be down-to-earth, apply theoretical knowledge in practice and contribute to the development of the motherland.
\n
Xu Ruize, a freshman at Tsinghua's Shuimu College, traced his roots to Fushun, Liaoning province — the birthplace of the "Lei Feng Spirit" and once known as China's "coal capital".
\n
He recalled observing the vast open-pit mine that fueled New China's industrial growth and his parents' factory, which relocated due to mining-induced subsidence.
\n
"Since I learned to write, I've expressed one wish: to make my hometown better," he said. "How can I contribute? This question planted a simple aspiration in meto become someone useful to my hometown and country."
\n
Xu also referred to the Sept 18 Incident in 1931 that marked the start of Japan's invasion of China.
\n
"History tells us that only when the country is strong can families be safe and prosperous," he said. "The words 'home and country' remain firm values in Tsinghua people's hearts. I hope to join my peers to shoulder our generation's mission and integrate our learning into the grand blueprint of national rejuvenation."
\n
zoushuo@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",
