The accusation was theft — a charge fabricated after she rejected a soldier's advances.
\n
A laundry worker at the Japanese barracks, Lam Chin was subjected to a relentless beating, with rifle butts smashing against her bones.
\n
Eight-year-old Lam Chun stood frozen. Her sister was tied to the staircase, her shirt staining redder with each blow.
\n
Soldiers demanded stolen military currency she had never touched. When she fainted, they revived her with water. When their mother lunged forward, a soldier threw the older woman to the ground. A blade was pressed to Lam Chin's throat — yet she never yielded.
\n
"That day left a deep impression on me," Lam Chun, now 90, recalled. "It wasn't a day for just our family's shame, but also the nation's suffering."
\n
The torture lasted hours, finally ending at lunchtime. Having found nothing, the soldiers left — but not before stealing a pair of military binoculars that had belonged to Lam Chun's late father, a Kuomintang officer.
\n
What her tormentors didn't know was that Lam Chin was secretly smuggling intelligence for guerrillas led by the Communist Party of China in their fight to liberate Hong Kong.
\n
That night, as her family dressed her wounds, Lam Chin revealed her secret. A former leader in the student movement supporting the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), she had long been fighting back.
\n
Her suffering, coupled with this revelation, became a call to arms — not just for vengeance, but for victory.
\n
"'If we're beaten for no reason at home, we might as well fight,'" Lam Chun remembered her mother declaring.
\n
Family became comrades
\n
Within months, Lam Chun, her mother, and her brother joined the Hong Kong Independent Battalion — her sister's unit. They fled to its Pingshan headquarters in rural Shenzhen in Guangdong province. Lam Chun's two other older sisters stayed behind in occupied Hong Kong; one worked at a bookstore by day and taught night classes for female factory workers, while the other, recently married, was unable to join them.
\n
Nearly 1,000 strong and composed almost entirely of locals, the battalion became a relentless foe to Japan after its Dec 8, 1941, invasion of Hong Kong.
\n
The then-British colony's defenses collapsed in just 18 days — a swift defeat that historians, including Hong Kong Chronicles Institute Deputy Chief Editor Liu Shuyong, see as emblematic of Britain's halfhearted commitment to defending the colony.
\n
Now, as the last survivors fade, their stories — once buried under colonial and wartime politics have resurfaced. Their resistance played a crucial role in the broader Allied effort to defeat fascism and weaken the Japanese war machine, and their heroics in the liberation of Hong Kong cannot be underestimated.
\n
Dark chapter
\n
Dec 8, 1941, began like any ordinary morning in Hong Kong — until warplanes tore through the dawn sky. The Lam family had just finished breakfast when air raid sirens shattered the calm. Lam Chun and her mother were on their way to church when the first bombs fell.
\n
Their home, directly across from Kai Tak airfield, placed them in the crosshairs. "When the bombing started, my mother ran back to check on my siblings,Line truncated

Over 20 hectares of peach and plum trees flourish here, accompanied by the elegantly constructed Jibai Villa, a nationally recognized A-level tourist homestay inn.
\n
The transformation of this site is nothing short of remarkable. Visitors are greeted with a diverse range of activities, from rural tourism experiences like flower appreciation and fruit picking to a mining study club and the region's first innkeeper training school.
\n
A newly built 120-square-meter lifestyle aesthetics center offers yoga and Pilates activities, while a stylish restaurant and cafe, converted from former quarry management offices and workshops, serve as social hubs.
\n
According to Zhou Song, the owner, the site attracts up to 1,000 visitors daily during peak seasons, totaling more than 100,000 tourists annually and generating revenue exceeding five million yuan ($698,330). The guesthouse accommodates 400 diners simultaneously and provides stable employment for nearly 30 local villagers, each earning an average annual income of about 50,000 yuan.
\n
In 2022, the village collective economic cooperative invested in Jibai's surrounding projects, increasing the village's annual income by 150,000 yuan.
\n
The story of this transformation began in the early 2000s when Zhou's father leased the land for stone mining. Despite initial economic benefits, excessive mining led to severe environmental degradation. Recognizing the need for change, Zhou's father closed the quarry at the end of 2016.
\n
With a background in architecture, Zhou led his design team to launch a green restoration project in early 2017. The homestay opened in 2020 and quickly became a popular destination. The local government has supported this initiative by providing infrastructure such as a display area for a weekend specialty market, a basketball court, paved roads, and street lighting.
\n
Zhang Deqiang, a mining environmental expert at the China Institute of Geo-Environmental Monitoring, praised the project during a recent field trip. "I've noticed that many ecological restoration projects in Chongqing are supported by industries, primarily thanks to the full use of the region's superb strategic location."
\n
He noted that the mining pit and cultural tourism development in Beibei have enabled the municipality to explore a unique restoration path that addresses historical ecological issues while providing new growth opportunities for rural vitalization.
\n
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, which has restored 7,025 hectares of historically abandoned and closed mines, marking significant progress in ecological protection and restoration.
\n
Zhou said he plans to enhance the site's functionality to draw diverse visitors. He envisions creating a hub for homestays that offer comprehensive services to tourists, thereby attracting more investors interested in agriculture and hospitality.
\n
Contact the writers at dengrui@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

\n

",

"title": "009COMMENT - SCO Plus carries Shanghai Spirit forward in pursuit of improved global governance",
"description": "

It is not alarmist to say that global governance stands at a critical juncture, and that reform of the postwar international system is imperative to make it fit for the times.
\n
It was therefore timely that the largest-ever summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which convened in China's northern port city of Tianjin on Sunday and Monday, significantly bolstered confidence in meaningful reform of the global governance system to make it more effective.
\n
The SCO Plus meeting sounded a resounding note for global cooperation, development and a shared future.
\n
As Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored in his address to the meeting on Monday, the organization has increasingly become a catalyst for the development and reform of the global governance system, and he called on it to "continue to unequivocally oppose hegemonism and power politics, practice true multilateralism, and stand as a pillar in promoting a multipolar world and greater democracy in international relations".
\n
Stressing that the historical trends of peace, development, cooperation and mutual benefit remain unchanged, he said the world has found itself in a new period of turbulence and transformation, with new threats and challenges increasing, as the Cold War mentality, hegemonism and protectionism continue to haunt the world.
\n
This has created trust and security deficits. To address these, President Xi called on those attending the meeting to improve global governance by setting an example in carrying out the Global Governance Initiative that he proposed.
\n
To this end, he highlighted five key principles of the initiative: First, adhering to sovereign equality and upholding the principle that all countries, regardless of size, strength, wealth or poverty, enjoy equal participation, decision-making, and benefits from global governance; Second, abiding by international rule of law, fully, comprehensively, and completely adhering to the universally recognized basic norms of international relations, including the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, ensuring the equal and uniform application of international law and rules, and refraining from double standards, and the imposing of the "house rules" of a few countries on others; Third, practicing multilateralism by adhering to the global governance concept of extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefits; Fourth, advocating the people-centered approach to ensure that people of all countries participate in and share the fruits of improved global governance; Fifth, focusing on taking real actions by adhering to systematic planning and holistic advancement of coordinated global actions that fully mobilize resources from all parties.
\n
"I look forward to working with all countries for a more just and equitable global governance system and advancing toward a community with a shared future for humanity," he said.
\n
Multilateralism, based on coordination and cooperation, is ingrained in the DNA of the SCO Plus, which boasts 10 member states, two observer states and 15 dialogue partners, and represents nearly half of the world's population, one-fourth of the global landmass and about one-fourth of the global GDP. No wonder the SCO is being increasingly looked upon as an important force for safeguarding world peace and a driver for reform of the global governance system.
\n
As President Xi told those attending the meeting in Tianjin on Monday, the SCO member states were the first to put forward the vision of global governance featuring extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefits as an effort to practice true multilateralism. Hailing the organization for its international influence and appeal that are increasing day by day, Xi urged them to forge ahead by carrying forward the Shanghai Spirit that the organization embodies.
\n
Reforming and improving global governance to keep pace with the times is imperative to uphold international fairness and justice and oppose the bullying acts of those who hope to keep a stranglehold on international affairs.
\n
The Shanghai Spirit of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for the diversity of civilizations, and pursuit of common development is the guiding light for the organization to forge ahead with solid steps toward the realization of a community with a shared future for humanity.
\n

",

"title": "009COMMENT - Lessons from green factories for developing countries",
"description": "

Editor's Note: Brazilian media Forum Magazine recently published an article stating that for decades, industrial growth and sustainability seemed at odds with each other, but now, China's green factories are striving to prove that the two can go hand in hand and even transform sustainability into a source of strength. In an interview with People's Daily Overseas Edition, Xu Yingming, a senior researcher of green trade at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, expounded on China's experience in this regard. Below are excerpts from the interview. The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.
\n
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets". For two decades, this scientific philosophy has guided China's continuous exploration of ways to achieve coordinated progress of ecological protection and economic development. By 2024, China's energy consumption per unit of GDP had decreased by 11.6 percent compared to 2020, equivalent to a reduction of 1.1 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions.
\n
Focusing on core objectives such as intensive land use, harmless raw materials, clean production, waste resource utilization and low-carbon energy, green factories continuously promote intensive utilization of infrastructure, management systems, energy and resource inputs and products. This makes them a key vehicle for green development throughout the product life cycle and manufacturing industry chain.
\n
Over the past decade, green factories, as the core implementation unit of green manufacturing, have been a major driving force in China's efforts to build an efficient, clean, low-carbon and circular green manufacturing system. Since the launch of a national green factory selection program in 2017, China now has over 6,400 national-level green factories, whose output value accounts for 20 percent of China's total manufacturing output. By 2030, the output value of green factories nationwide is expected to exceed 40 percent of the total manufacturing output value.
\n
Cognitive shifts, policy support and improved standards are key initiatives in China's efforts to promote the development of green factories. On a conceptual level, China is shifting from its past extensive development model to green development, transforming the concept of green development into a quantifiable, replicable, and sustainable closed-loop system of "strategy-management-technology-culture".
\n
On the policy level, China provides substantial policy and financial support for the green transformation of enterprises through multifaceted support, including direct financial incentives, tax incentives, energy conservation and emissions reduction subsidies, green product certification incentives, and green investment guidance funds.
\n
In terms of the standardization system, by implementing and updating a series of policies, standards and regulations for industries such as steel, nonferrous metals, chemicals, and rare earths, a "general principles+ guidelines+ detailed rules" implementation system has been established.
\n
In accordance with the dynamic management requirements of the interim measures for the undertaking, the country plans to annually remove noncompliant green factories, green industry parks and green supply chain management companies from the green manufacturing list.
\n
This ensures that green factories serve as role models, continuously improve green manufacturing standards and promote the green transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry. Except for green factories' contribution to environmental protection, the high-value-added green products they produce can also better meet the demand for sustainable consumption in both domestic and international markets. This helps break down green trade barriers, significantly enhance companies' market competitiveness and brand image, foster new drivers of green economic growth and achieve a seamless integration of environmental and economic benefits.
\n
China provides developing countries with a green development plan that deeply embeds green elements throughout the entire industrial process. The country has achieved systematic technological breakthroughs which can provide developing countries with a systematic, intelligent and green menu-style technical support solution.
\n

",

By 1945, this number had increased to 1.98 million troops, exceeding the number of Japanese military personnel across the Pacific. It was just 8 km deep. Shallower quakes tend to cause more damage. Several aftershocks followed.
\n
Footage showed rescuers taking injured people on stretchers from collapsed buildings and into helicopters as people frantically dug through rubble with their hands.
\n
Buildings in Afghanistan tend to be low-rise constructions, mostly of concrete and brick, with homes in rural and outlying areas made from mud bricks and wood.
\n
Worst-affected areas
\n
One resident in Nurgal district, one of the worst-affected areas in Kunar, said nearly the entire village was destroyed.
\n
"Children are under the rubble. Since then, it has steadily expanded its membership and broadened its areas of cooperation.
\n
President Xi's address reflected a pragmatic approach, outlining the SCO's vision for the next decade, Singh said. He emphasized that the organization is advancing from multilateral dialogue to concrete action aimed at safeguarding regional security, advancing prosperity in Eurasia, and contributing meaningfully to global peace, stability, and the building of a community with shared future for humanity.
\n
Peaceful cooperation
\n
Lawrence Loh, director of the Center for Governance and Sustainability at the National University of Singapore, said the unity demonstrated at the SCO Tianjin Summit signifies fresh hope for a new future of peaceful global cooperation.
\n
"President Xi's momentous call for openness in a multipolar world is both pressing and urgent. The world cannot afford to backpedal in its progress due to any country's self-interest," he said.
\n
Xi also unveiled China's new measures to support the SCO's development and win-win cooperation among members. "We need to better align our development strategies and promote the high-quality implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative," the president said.
\n
Alshaabani said Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and the SCO's development concepts converge on diversification, connectivity and sustainable growth. "The Tianjin summit provides a unique chance for Saudi Arabia to deepen cooperation with SCO countries."
\n
Xi said SCO members need to enhance mutual understanding and friendship through people-to-people exchanges and cultivate a garden of civilizations in which all cultures flourish in prosperity and harmony.
\n
Mohammad Ghazal, managing editor of English news at Aletihad News Center in the UAE, said civilizations grow stronger by learning from one another, not by isolating themselves — a principle embodied and advanced by the Shanghai Spirit.
\n
"The history of exchange between China and the Arab world shows how dialogue creates prosperity as cooperation dates back to centuries and this, for example, can inspire others today to embrace diversity and build peaceful coexistence," he said.
\n
As the world is faced with mounting security challenges, geopolitical rLine truncated

"description": "

Shanghai's latest adjustments to home purchase measures triggered a more than 35 percent week-on-week surge in new home transactions, along with a sharp rise in inquiries for pre-owned apartments. Industry experts said on Monday that the response highlights the effectiveness of the new policy and sets the stage for broader market stabilization.
\n
"Following the policy release, visits to some sales offices and brokerage outlets surged, with inquiries doubling, reflecting a boost in market confidence," said Yan Yuejin, research director at the E-House China R&D Institute.
\n
Yan said from the perspective of policy intent and strength, the new measures carry clear positive significance. By easing purchase restrictions and improving housing fund and credit policies, the threshold and cost of buying homes are both lowered, which will effectively stimulate demand.
\n
"The policy has had a clear effect in lifting market sentiment," said Lu Wenxi, an analyst at Centaline Shanghai.
\n
Shanghai's housing market continued its rebound last week, with 113,400 square meters of new homes sold between Aug 25 and 31, up 35.25 percent from the previous week. The rebound in mid to high-end home sales pushed Shanghai's average new home price to 96,901 yuan per square meter last week, up 9.55 percent week-on-week, according to Lu.
\n
Data from Shanghai Lianjia Research Institute showed online activity surged following the new measures. Compared with the previous week, views of pre-owned homes rose 11 percent and new homes 19 percent, while inquiries increased 15 percent for pre-owned and 33 percent for new properties.
\n
"Inquiries at our Jing'an branch surged 20 to 30 percent compared with the period before the new measures were announced," said Huang Ying Chia, a regional manager with Sinyi Realty in Shanghai.
\n
Huang said clients are making decisions at a faster pace.
\n
"One client began looking for an apartment more than a year ago but couldn't decide. Last week, following the new measures, the same client approached us to arrange visits to several flats beyond the Outer Ring Road in Jing'an and Xuhui districts. Another client, who sold a flat in Zhabei district over a week ago, visited three apartments in Jing'an district on Saturday and purchased one of them the same day," Huang added.
\n
To better meet residents' basic and diverse housing needs and to promote the stable and healthy development of the property market, Shanghai rolled out new real estate policy adjustments on Aug 25.
\n
"The housing-friendly measures are helping ease market anxiety. With a range of initiatives, including eased purchase restrictions and improved credit policies, the policies are supportive of both first-time buyers and those upgrading, and their release during the traditional sales season helps stabilize expectations," Lu said.
\n
Under the new policy, all local households and non-local residents who have paid taxes or social insurance in Shanghai for at least one year are now allowed to purchase any number of homes outside the Outer Ring Road. The measures also include easing purchase restrictions, optimizing housing provident fund and credit policies, and adjusting property tax rules.
\n
wang_ying@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

Revenue from the China market — where it entered 31 years ago — reached roughly $550 million in financial year 2024.
\n
Behind such an achievement has been the company's continued investment and accelerated launch of new therapies in the local market, which is currently the company's fourth-largest market by country, said Atsushi Kitamura, chief financial officer of Astellas.
\n
"Growth in the China market from the first quarter of financial year 2025 leaped to a staggering 57.8 percent, driven by various factors, including a first-in-class anti-claudin 18.2 monoclonal antibody, which is the first and the only CLDN18.2-targeted therapy approved in the world for patients with CLDN18.2 positive, unresectable, advanced or recurrent gastric cancer, which was approved in China in January," Kitamura said in an exclusive interview last Tuesday.
\n
He said that the company has made accelerated investments in China, the world's second-largest pharmaceutical market, in recent years. Major initiatives include upgrading the organizational structure of Astellas China in 2021, establishing the regional headquarters in Beijing, and appointing the first local president in China unit last year.
\n
"Riding such waves for robust development, we are accelerating innovation for our next phase of growth. We have achieved two proofs of concept in the first half of this year, and are on track to hopefully achieve another three within the next 12 months," Kitamura said.
\n
The company, he added, currently has nine compounds under clinical development across its areas of focus: immuno-oncology, blindness and regeneration, genetic regulation, and targeted protein degradation.
\n
Aiming to accelerate the delivery of global innovations to Chinese patients, Astellas has included China as a first-tier region in the global development of new medicines, with early-stage programs launching simultaneously, Kitamura said.
\n
For example, after identifying the unmet medical need that Chinese gastric patients account for more than 40 percent of the global total, the company invited Chinese experts to be the leading principal investigators of the global multicenter clinical trial regarding the CLDN18.2-targeted therapy in 2019.
\n
Zhao Ping, president of Astellas China, said: "This therapy marks the first time that we have achieved global simultaneous development and approval for an Astellas product in China. Finding the right path this time, we can apply the experience to future drugs, enabling China to achieve simultaneous development and approval with the globe."
\n
Astellas kicked off the first global Phase I study for a bispecific immune cell engager targeting certain proteins and molecules in China last year, Zhao said.
\n
zhouwenting@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

The large-scale development of heavy oil thermal recovery faces challenges in terms of technology, equipment and economic benefits, and is recognized by the industry as a world-class problem.
\n
Currently, heavy oil accounts for approximately 70 percent of the world's remaining oil resources and is one of the main directions for increasing production for various oil-producing countries, said CNOOC.
\n
Lin believes CNOOC's breakthrough in offshore heavy oil thermal recovery represents a significant step forward for China's energy sector.
\n
CNOOC's achievement in offshore heavy oil thermal recovery is a strategic win for China's energy security. As global oil demand continues to rise, unlocking previously inaccessible heavy oil reserves becomes increasingly critical, he said.
\n
The company's technological advancements not only enhance its own production capabilities but also position it as a potential exporter of this specialized technology to other nations with significant heavy oil resources, he added.
\n
China is one of the world's four major heavy oil producers, with abundant heavy oil resources. The proven reserves of high-viscosity heavy oil that require thermal injection for development offshore exceed 600 million tons, accounting for approximately 20 percent of China's proven heavy oil reserves, indicating great development potential.
\n
Continuously promoting the conversion of heavy oil reserves into production is of great significance for increasing domestic oil and gas exploration and development efforts, said CNOOC.
\n
This year, heavy oil thermal recovery production has exceeded 1.3 million tons and annual production is expected to jump to 2 million tons, it said.
\n
CNOOC is actively involved in heavy oil production, notably with its new Kenli 10-2 oilfield project, the first lithological oilfield with a proven in-place volume of 100 million tons discovered in the shallow depression zone of the Bohai Bay Basin, which commenced heavy crude production in July.
\n
This project, equipped with over 240 sets of key equipment, utilizes both conventional and thermal recovery techniques to produce the viscous, high-density oil.
\n
As one of the most complex production platforms in the Bohai region and the first large-scale thermal recovery platform for heavy oil in the southern Bohai Sea, it is expected to achieve a peak production of about 19,400 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2026, said CNOOC.
\n
The main production facilities include a new central platform and two wellhead platforms, which leverage the adjacent existing facilities for development, it said.
\n
CNOOC has been stepping up efforts to boost China's domestic heavy oil production and has the distinction of leading in large-scale offshore heavy oil thermal recovery technology.
\n
The successful commencement of production of this project marks a new stage in the development of complicated heavy oil reservoirs offshore China, CNOOC said.
\n
"It will strongly support the company's Bohai oilfield to achieve the annual gross production target of 40 million tons, contributing to the company's high-quality development through high-level operations."
\n
zhengxin@chinadaily.com.cnLine truncated

Besides rising demand from young Chinese consumers, it also has many foreign customers, especially in Shanghai.
\n
"We have seen a growing demand for household services from Chinese consumers. Young people have indicated an increasingly strong awareness for hiring domestic helpers to help them with household chores," Li said.
\n
Yuan Xili, a domestic service helper, has been working for more than 10 years at Home King in Xiamen. In the past few years, demand has been growing, as many young people tend to hire domestic helpers instead of doing the cleaning work themselves," Yuan said.
\n
Xiamen has been encouraging household service enterprises to expand into emerging service areas, further enrich the supply of products and services, and better meet consumers' personalized and quality-oriented demands. Besides Home King, the city is home to a number of household service companies, such as Ujoy and Haobangni.
\n
From 2022 to 2024, the compound annual growth rate of Xiamen's household service sector's gross merchandise volume reached 2,032 percent, which is more than double the average growth rate of the 15 sub-provincial cities in China, according to the local government of Xiamen.
\n
Meanwhile, the central government has reiterated the need to effectively unleash potential in domestic demand, encourage goods consumption and foster new growth drivers of service consumption.
\n
The Ministry of Commerce is also set to introduce new policies in September to help promote service consumption, leveraging fiscal and financial tools to enhance service supply capacity and stimulate new growth momentum.
\n
"Currently, the main challenge in China's service consumption lies in the insufficient supply of high-quality services," said Sheng Qiuping, vice-minister of commerce, during a recent news conference in Beijing.
\n
The ministry said it will help expand the pilot opening-up of fields such as telecommunications, medical care and education, and include more service consumption-related fields in the catalog of encouraging foreign investment.
\n
Besides, the ministry will help promote the reform and innovation of the service sector by stimulating the vitality of various business entities and expanding the supply of diversified services such as healthcare, elderly care, childcare and household services, thus better meeting consumer demand.
\n
"It's very good that the government will continue to help boost the growth of services consumption. Hiring household service helpers has increasingly become a necessity for many residents, instead of a luxury," Li of Home King said.
\n
Meanwhile, Home King has continued to expand its presence overseas. The company has established a branch in the Philippines, and it plans to further expand in US cities such as New York.
\n
In the Philippines, it has hired more than 60 local employees, and mainly provides services to local Chinese consumers.
\n
In the first half of this year, China's total import and export value of services reached 3.9 trillion yuan, up 8 percent year-on-year, a record high, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
\n

",

The festival is a grand cultural event organized by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the China Theatre Association.
\n
This year's event aims to showcase the rich diversity of China's theater landscape, bringing together a stunning array of performances from across the nation.
\n
Founded in 1988, the festival has become a cornerstone of Chinese theatrical culture, fostering talent, encouraging creation, and promoting excellence in drama.
\n
Held every two years, it has grown into one of the most prestigious platforms for both established and emerging artists to showcase their work. This year, the festival will present 42 theatrical productions out of 73 selected from across China, spanning 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.
\n
The performances will encompass a diverse range of genres, including traditional Chinese opera, modern drama, ballet and opera. Puppetry will also be included in the festival for the first time.
\n
According to the organizers, what sets this edition apart is the festival's focus on striking a balance between tradition and innovation. One of the key highlights is the celebration of the spirit of "10 years to perfect a play", which encourages the long-term development and refinement of works.
\n
Productions for the festival include the Peking Opera Qi Baishi by the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing, which follows the life story of art master Qi Baishi (1864-1957), one of the country's most celebrated artists; and the dance drama Cavalry, by the Inner Mongolia Art Theatre, which tells the story of a young man who grows from a village student into a courageous hero of the cavalry during wartime in the 1940s. Both productions have evolved over the years, winning national accolades, and are ready to return to the stage with further refinements.
\n
The festival's organizing committee notes that this edition of the festival will highlight traditional Chinese operas, including Qinqiang Opera, Cantonese Opera, and Kunqu Opera. These productions are adapted from well-known folk legends, which are grounded in the country's cultural heritage and aim to offer both nostalgic value and artistic depth.
\n
While preserving tradition, the event will also showcase technological innovation in Chinese theatrical productions. Productions such as The Great National Craftsmen and Two Capitals, Fifteen Days integrate multimedia elements to enhance their storytelling.
\n
The festival also features experimental productions, such as Star Returning, a collaborative work by artists from home and abroad, which honors Yi ethnic culture and breaks geographical and cultural barriers to offer a cross-regional perspective on stage.
\n
In addition to live performances, the festival will feature renowned performers and winners of top Chinese theater awards, including China's Plum Blossom Award and Wenhua Award. These celebrated artists will be joined by emerging talents, making for a dynamic blend of seasoned expertise and youthful energy.
\n
The festival's commitment to nurturing new talent is also reflected in its training programs, which aim to cultivate the next generation of theater talent.
\n

",

Protracted negotiations over the deal have dominated the Premier League transfer window, which closed on Monday, with a Liverpool bid of 110 million pounds for the 25-year-old rejected earlier in August.
\n
Neither Liverpool nor Newcastle immediately responded to requests for comments outside normal business hours early on Monday morning.
\n
Isak scored 23 league goals last season to guide Newcastle back to the Champions League with a fifth-placed finish, as well as also scoring in the League Cup final against Liverpool to give the Magpies their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
\n
He did not join Newcastle on its preseason tour and was forced to train separately in a tense standoff with the club.
\n
Isak, however, accused Newcastle of breaking promises and misleading supporters in a statement that confirmed he wanted to leave the club, saying that change was in the "best interests of everyone".
\n
At 25, Isak is entering the peak of his career. His ability to stretch defenses, link play and score a variety of goals makes him a natural fit for Liverpool's high-intensity style.
\n
Beyond the tactical fit, this signing sends a message: Arne Slot's Liverpool is not content with last year's title, it's after more big trophies.
\n
Few transfers in recent years have captured attention like this one, with Reds fans already buzzing online about Isak's Premier League record at Newcastle, hoping he can deliver instantly. If Isak adapts quickly to Anfield's expectations, Liverpool could have secured a world-class striker for the next six years.
\n
On Saturday, Newcastle signed German striker Nick Woltemade for a club record fee reported to be worth up to 69 million pounds, a move regarded to have paved the way for Isak's departure.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

We believe that as the host of this summit, Tianjin will give fresh impetus to the sustainable development of our organization," Xi told the guests.
\n
Founded in Shanghai in 2001, the SCO has expanded from a six-member regional organization into a trans-regional organization with 10 full members, two observer countries and 14 dialogue partners, representing nearly half of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy.
\n
Xi said that since its inception, the SCO has upheld the "Shanghai Spirit", with the core values of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diversity and pursuit of common development.
\n
The organization has consolidated unity and mutual trust, deepened practical cooperation, and participated in international and regional affairs, Xi said.
\n
As a result, the SCO has grown into a significant force in promoting a new type of international relations and building a community with a shared future for humanity, he added.
\n
"At present, the century-defining transformation is accelerating across the world, with a marked increase in factors of instability, uncertainty, and unpredictability. The SCO thus bears an even greater responsibility for maintaining regional peace and stability and promoting the development and prosperity of all countries," Xi said.
\n
He emphasized that this year's summit in Tianjin carries the important mission of building consensus, injecting new impetus into cooperation and charting a blueprint for future growth.
\n
According to the schedule, member states are expected to adopt key documents, including the organization's development strategy for the next decade, during the summit.
\n
Xi is also expected to unveil China's new measures and actions to support the SCO's high-quality development and all-around cooperation, while outlining pathways for the organization to contribute constructively to safeguarding the post-World War II international order and enhancing the global governance system.
\n
"I am confident that with the collective efforts of all parties, this summit will be a complete success and the SCO will play an even greater role, achieve greater development, and make greater contribution to strengthening solidarity and cooperation among the member states, pooling the strength of the Global South, and promoting the cause of human advancement," he said.
\n
In his toast, Xi cited a Chinese saying that "in a race of a hundred boats, those who row the hardest will lead".
\n
"Let us uphold the 'Shanghai Spirit' and set out from Tianjin on a new voyage filled with hope toward an even brighter future!" he said.
\n
mojingxi@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

Two months later, CNPC and ADNOC signed a strategic cooperation agreement covering the entire oil and gas industry chain, including exploration, research, technology exchange, engineering services, refining and petrochemicals, market sales, international gas project cooperation, and new energy collaboration, thereby deepening their strategic alignment.
\n
Adhering to the principle of mutual benefit, CNPC leverages its complementary strengths with ADNOC to continuously advance practical cooperation in upstream exploration and development, engineering construction, technical services, oil and gas trade, and scientific research.
\n
In onshore oilfield development, CNPC utilizes its technological advantages in low-permeability carbonate reservoirs to help boost production and reduce costs in the North-East Bab fields.
\n
In technological innovation, the two companies have sustained collaboration in cutting-edge areas such as reservoir simulation, drilling acceleration, and smart oilfields. Among them, the "Broadband, Wide-Azimuth, High-Density" seismic exploration technology provides technical support for ADNOC's efforts in increasing production of mature oil fields and developing new resources.
\n
In engineering construction, the ongoing BAB-Buhasa AiP5 off-plot project, LNG Transmission Pipeline Project, and Project Swing are helping ADNOC substantially increase capacity and operational efficiency, while promoting local project execution capabilities through the introduction of international engineering management models.
\n
In oilfield services, CNPC has contributed to reducing ADNOC's development costs through its high-quality and efficient drilling services.
\n
In the equipment sector, hybrid drilling rigs manufactured by CNPC reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and improve drilling efficiency through intelligent remote monitoring and dispatching. In oil and gas trade, CNPC participates in the trade of crude oil, natural gas, refined oil and chemicals, and is the sole Chinese shareholder in the Abu Dhabi Futures Exchange.
\n
In talent development, ADNOC representatives visit China to gain insights into CNPC's technical and management expertise, while CNPC senior managers engage with ADNOC's core business units, facilitating business cooperation. "title": "013CHINA - New war memorials honor sacrifices home, abroad",
"description": "

China has released its fourth list of newly designated memorial facilities and historical sites to commemorate victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), while also honoring the contributions of overseas Chinese and international anti-fascist forces, officials said on Sunday.
\n
On Friday, authorities released the list of 34 national-level memorial facilities and sites dedicated to the war, along with the fourth batch of 43 renowned heroes, martyrs and heroic groups.
\n
Senior officials from the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and the National Cultural Heritage Administration introduced the lists and provided updates on restoration and protection efforts at a news conference on Sunday morning.
\n
The latest designations underscore the Communist Party of China's pivotal role in leading the resistance against Japanese forces and reflect how Chinese people fought alongside international antifascist forces. They also honor sacrifices made on the battlefield and pay tribute to the contributions of overseas Chinese, according to Ma Feixiong, vice-minister of veterans affairs.
\n
Among the sites included are a memorial park in Shandan county, Gansu province, dedicated to New Zealand-born writer Rewi Alley and British journalist George Aylwin Hogg — both of whom supported China during the war — as well as the Red Army East Expedition Memorial Hall in Shilou county, Shanxi province.
\n
Four of the newly designated national-level memorial facilities and sites are located outside the Chinese mainland, in countries such as the Philippines and Myanmar. One example is a monument in Myitkyina, northern Myanmar, dedicated to soldiers of the Chinese Expeditionary Force who fell in battle during World War II.
\n
Such memorial facilities, officials said, testify to the unity of compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as overseas Chinese, who joined the fight against the Japanese invasion under the banner of the national united front.
\n
China has established more than 100 overseas memorial facilities and sites related to the war — including more than 30 in countries such as Myanmar, India, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Russia, and more than 80 in Hong Kong and Macao.
\n
From 2014 to 2020, China released three previous batches of lists, recognizing a total of 260 national-level memorial facilities and sites and 1,085 heroes, martyrs and heroic groups.
\n
Sun Deli, deputy administrator of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, highlighted the role of such sites in patriotic education, noting that more than 500 themed exhibitions on the war are held annually across the country, attracting more than 60 million visitors. Ninety-six memorial sites and facilities have been designated as national demonstration bases for patriotic education.
\n
From July to September, about 1,000 themed exhibitions were launched nationwide to strengthen the educational and inspirational role of cultural relics from the war.
\n
In September, a special exhibition themed International Friends and China's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression opened alongside a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Flying Tigers, volunteer pilots from the United States who supported China. Additional events such as forums, touring speeches and storytelling competitions are also planned.
\n
China has more than 10,000 immovable cultural relics and more than 500,000 movable relics related to the war, Sun said. He called them invaluable and irreplaceable pieces of heritage, stressing the importance of preservation.
\n
More than 3,000 conservation projects have been completed nationwide, covering site restoration, exhibition upgrades and environmental improvements. Hazards at major sites have been addressed, and the overall condition of cultural relics has improved, according to Sun.
\n
xingwen@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

The current draft amendment was released for public comment late in July.
\n
The 27-year-old law's rewrite comes as China confronts a phenomenon increasingly lamented by economists and business executives alike — cutthroat competition, where firms spiral into destructive internal competition, often slashing prices below cost to gain market share.
\n
Guo Liyan, deputy director of the Economic Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research, said: "The amendment sends a clear signal that maintaining fair market competition is nonnegotiable.
\n
"Selling below cost is a malignant form of involution. When it spreads, it erodes profit margins, drives more firms into losses and makes it harder to stabilize production or create jobs. It even hurts household income growth, particularly for low- and middle-income earners."
\n
At the heart of the amendment are tougher and clearer rules on predatory pricing. The current law, experts said, applies only to goods and to sellers.
\n
The revision, in particular, would broaden its reach to cover services and extend liability to third parties such as online platforms that set pricing rules.
\n
The revised Article 14, for instance, seeks to ban operators from selling goods or services below cost for the purpose of "crowding out competitors or monopolizing the market", unless there are legitimate reasons such as clearance of perishable, seasonal or overstocked items. It also specifies that platforms cannot force other operators to price below cost.
\n
Han Wei, an associate professor at the Law School of the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said, "The wording distills the essence of predatory pricing into two elements: the means, which is below-cost pricing, and the purpose, which is exclusion or monopoly."
\n
Han added that including services and platforms into the amended law closes regulatory gaps. "It's especially important for sectors like food delivery, ride-hailing or online retailing, where platforms sometimes compel merchants to follow their rules, forcing them into loss-making price battles."
\n
China is strengthening oversight of what it describes as involution-style competition, or cutthroat competition, and is aiming to foster a market that rewards quality and innovation while promoting healthier, more sustainable industrial development.
\n
The 2025 Government Work Report released in March vowed to take comprehensive steps to address intense competition or cutthroat competition.
\n
The focus was cemented at a meeting of the Central Commission for Financial and Economic Affairs on July 1, where policymakers pledged to tackle disorderly low-price competition, guide enterprises to improve product quality, and facilitate the orderly exit of outdated production capacities.
\n
Notably, the latest amendment also ventures into algorithmic pricing, data abuse and technology-enabled price manipulation, all of which are new problems emerging amid the development of the country's booming digital economy.
\n
The proposed law reflects a transformed landscape. When the pricing law was first enacted, many goods and services were still led by people.
Today, prices are largely market-driven and new business models emerge constantly, from livestream shopping to instant delivery.
\n
Market regulators are facing problems unheard of a generation ago: flasLine truncated

"title": "015COMMENT - Neighbors' cooperative pas de deux will be salient boon for Global South",
"description": "

President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin. This meeting, building on their successful dialogue in Kazan in 2024, represents an important moment for China-India relations, and comes at a significant time.
\n
Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India, it presents a key opportunity for the two neighbors to shape their relations by forging a partnership embodying the SCO's spirit of mutual trust, equality and common development.
\n
In the meeting, President Xi emphasized the importance of the two neighbors' viewing their relationship through a strategic and long-term lens. Identifying China and India as partners rather than adversaries, he highlighted a vision of a "cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant" — advocating deeper trust, expanded cooperation and peaceful coexistence that benefit both nations and the Global South.
\n
This perspective aligns with the SCO's mission to foster inclusive and equitable partnerships that prioritize development and stability over zero-sum competition.
\n
With 10 member states and a growing network of observer states and dialogue partners, the SCO covers about half of the world's population and over 25 percent of global GDP. The SCO Summit provides an ideal platform to foster dialogue that transcends differences and focus on shared goals.
\n
Central to Xi's remarks was the need for strategic communication to build trust. This is particularly crucial given the complex global landscape, marked by economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions. By recognizing each other as development opportunities rather than threats, China and India can anchor their relationship in a framework of mutual respect.
\n
As key players in the Global South, China and India can work together to promote unity and progress among developing countries.
\n
Since both countries are at a critical stage in their development, and with their economies helping to drive global growth, it was natural that economic cooperation should emerge as a cornerstone of the Tianjin discussions.
\n
President Xi called for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation, emphasizing that development is the greatest common denominator between the two nations.
\n
Regarding the border question, Xi advocated a pragmatic approach that prioritizes peace and prevents disputes from overshadowing the broader relationship. In this respect, he said that the principles of peaceful coexistence, championed by the older generation of Chinese and Indian leaders over 70 years ago, remain a guiding light.
\n
By managing differences constructively, both nations can ensure that bilateral ties remain resilient, even in the face of challenges. That Modi expressed India's willingness to seek a fair and mutually acceptable resolution to the border issue is a welcome sign that India shares the desire to maintain stability.
\n
As advocates of strategic autonomy, China and India are well-positioned to champion multilateralism and defend international fairness. Their cooperation within the SCO and other global frameworks can amplify the voice of the Global South, promoting a more democratic international order. Modi highlighted this by affirming that India's relations with China are not subject to third-party interference and that, acting together, the two countries can add strength to global multilateralism.
\n
The meeting between the Chinese and Indian leaders therefore sends a powerful message: collaboration, not confrontation, is the path to a shared future. Solidarity and close coordination are also the watchwords of the SCO, whose summit in Tianjin, under China's chairmanship, exemplifies the organization's role as a platform for inclusive dialogue.
\n
Its non-alignment approach, rooted in the "Shanghai Spirit", offers a model for multilateral engagement that contrasts with divisive blocs. The summit, as well as the "SCO Plus" meeting, prioritizes inclusivity and reflects the SCO's commitment to broadening global engagement.
\n
By prioritizing "bridges over walls", as the SCO ethos encourages, China and India can demonstrate that cooperation between major countries can drive progress for all. The summit in Tianjin is not just a new boost for bilateral relations but a testament to the power of collective action in building a more inclusive and prosperous world.
\n

",

"title": "015COMMENT - Reforms needed to tide over economic challenges",
"description": "

Editor's Note: In the first half of the year, China's GDP grew by 5.3 percent year-on-year. What is the current macroeconomic situation, how will policies proceed in the second half of the year, what challenges do the current deep-seated reforms face and which reforms should be prioritized during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30)? Yin Yanlin, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, spoke to Jiemian News on these issues. Below are excerpts from the interview. The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.
\n
The external environment has become increasingly complex and severe today. China's economy faces multiple difficulties and challenges, and there is considerable downward pressure. To achieve the annual economic and social development goals, macroeconomic policies must be strengthened in the second half of the year. Incremental reserve policies should be promptly introduced to counter the uncertainties of the international economic cycle.
\n
The government should implement more proactive fiscal policies and moderately easy monetary policies. It should accelerate the issuance of government bonds, but keep ample liquidity and take steps to lower the comprehensive social financing costs. More proactive fiscal policies could be introduced at an appropriate time by launching a new round of "large-scale" investment plans.
\n
Apart from these steps, the authorities should also stimulate the consumption potential by implementing policies for upgrading equipment and encourage trade-in consumption programs by removing restrictive measures to accelerate new growth points.
\n
It is necessary to provide interest subsidies to personal consumption loans and to business loans for the service industry, strengthen inter-departmental coordination, simplify procedures and ensure the swift implementation of these policies.
\n
It is important to intensify efforts to expand effective investment, implement major national strategies and build up security capacities in key areas with high quality. The restrictions on investment in key projects should be further relaxed.
\n
Consumption can be boosted by stabilizing the real estate market. Greater emphasis should be placed on halting the decline and on promoting the renovation of urban villages and dilapidated housing. In addition, it is necessary to address the risks in key areas, promoting the deep integration of technological and industrial innovation, deepening reform and opening-up, and ensuring people's livelihoods.
\n
Several economic reforms are required during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30). First, reforms of State-owned enterprises will help deepen their innovation efforts, optimize the State-owned economy and make resource allocation more efficient. As for the private sector, it is necessary to better protect property rights, more effectively implement the Private Economy Promotion Law and more strongly safeguard the enthusiasm of private players to develop and stabilize the market expectations.
\n
Second, it is essential to break down local protectionism and market fragmentation, standardize local investment promotion practices, and improve the fiscal, taxation and statistical accounting systems to make them conducive to a unified market.
\n
Third, the issues of excessive government intervention and inadequate regulation also need to be addressed. The authorities should further streamline administration to delegate power, deepen reforms of the administrative approval system and minimize government interference in micro-level affairs.
\n
Fourth, in response to global changes and competition, some domestic rules should be adjusted in accordance with the requirements of high-standard economic and trade agreements. By ensuring institutional opening-up, China can enhance the resilience of its industry and supply chains, and advance further in global competition.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

Even for serious tech enthusiasts, Chengdu offers plenty of surprises.
\n
Around 120 Chinese and overseas car brands are participating this year, covering 220,000 square meters of exhibition space, according to Liu Guoliang, president of Hannover Milano Fairs Shanghai, one of the organizers.
\n
Some of the luxury brands, including Bentley and Lamborghini, are absent, but overseas premium and volume brands are making their marks.
\n
Mercedes-Benz is showcasing the AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ convertible and the all-electric CLA; FAW-Audi is presenting 27 models including the PPE-based Q6L e-tron; and Ford is wooing visitors with its first smart electric off-road SUV, the Bronco EV.
\n
However, domestic brands take center stage, as NEVs are becoming mainstream: advanced battery systems, smart driver-assistance features, and luxury interiors rivaling global competitors signal a new era for Chinese automotive engineering.
\n
BYD dominates Hall 9 with its full lineup: Dynasty, Ocean, Denza, Fangchengbao, and premium Yangwang models. At the entrance to the hall is a wall decorated with over 35,000 patents, showcasing the automaker's dedication to NEVs.
\n
A walk from Mercedes-Benz to the Nio booth says it all: Nio's space is packed, while Mercedes' area looks comparatively quiet.
\n
"You can really see how Chinese electric and hybrid brands are maturing, both in technology and appeal," noted one industry analyst.
\n
Chengdu's motor show is not limited to the venue, with excitement spilling throughout the city.
\n
The pre-show week was already bustling with events around the city.
\n
Huawei-backed Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance gathered its five sub-brands days before the show.
\n
Volvo launched the XC70, a model it is betting on to defend its shrinking market share, and Great Wall Motors unveiled the Tank 500 with its Hi4-Z hybrid system at Dujiang Weir, the oldest extant irrigation system in China or even the world.
\n
The place was chosen for the event because Great Wall Motors wants to explain how its engine powers electricity generation while driving — delivering strong acceleration, high efficiency, and a fuel-saving edge simultaneously, much like how Dujiang Weir tames floods while ensuring the irrigation of the Chengdu Plain.
\n
"The show has evolved beyond a platform for new product launches, becoming both a symbol of urban culture and a key consumption driver for the region," Liu said.
\n
Last year, attendees placed over 33,000 orders during the event, with a combined transaction volume of 5.8 billion yuan ($80.8 million).
\n
From January to July this year, the city achieved 90.73 billion yuan in car retail sales, up 3.2 percent year-on-year, with 327,000 new car registrations.
\n
"Chengdu and the wider Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle are among the most dynamic car markets in China," Liu added.
\n
Liu was not exaggerating. The train, carrying components for FAW's Hongqi, Jiefang and Bestune brands, will travel 7,900 kilometers, passing through Manzhouli Port before continuing on to Europe.
\n
FAW has adopted a multimodal transport solution that integrates rail and sea freight with overseas warehousing, which reduces logistics costs and enhances the resilience of its supply chain.
\n
Chinese new energy vehicle startup Leapmotor announced that its global model, the B10 SUV, set sail for Europe last week. The model will debut in Europe at the IAA Mobility in Munich, Germany, on Sept 8, with deliveries beginning simultaneously.
\n
To meet diverse market demands, Leapmotor designed the B10 to international standards from the beginning of research and development. The vehicle complies with regulatory requirements across 53 countries and regions, with adaptations for different markets.
\n
It has also undergone millions of kilometers of testing in extreme environments across 200 cities in 18 countries throughout Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia.
\n
Priced at 29,900 euros ($34,890) in Europe and equipped with a cockpit chip and a lidar-based advanced driver-assistance system, Leapmotor's international partner Stellantis expects the B10 to be "one of the most competitive electric SUVs in its class" at this price.
\n
According to reports from Chinese media on Thursday, Leapmotor has selected Stellantis' Zaragoza plant in Spain as its manufacturing base in Europe. With 43 years of auto manufacturing experience and an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles, the Zaragoza facility will begin producing Leapmotor's B-series models after retooling, starting with the B10 in the third quarter of 2026, followed by the B05 compact.
\n
BYD has also made moves toward localized production in overseas markets recently. China's largest NEV maker launched the new Seal sedan in Malaysia on Aug 22 and announced that it would establish an assembly plant in the country, which is expected to begin operation in 2026.
\n
Just four days later, BYD Thailand announced that it had exported more than 900 NEVs manufactured at its Thai factory to Europe for the first time, including shipments to the United Kingdom, Germany, and Belgium.
\n
BYD's Thai plant, which was put into operation in July 2024, covers the entire production process including stamping, painting, welding, and assembly, with annual production of 150,000 units. Such an approach helps effectively circumvent trade barriers and reduce logistics costs.
\n
Chinese automakers are also exploring deeper localization in market services. SAIC Motor launched its first overseas joint experience center for its Wuling and MG brands in Jakarta, Indonesia, last week. The center is operated by ZHC Aladin International, an automotive sales company with Chinese investment.
\n
The center will offer Indonesian consumers a seamless experience throughout their vehicles' life cycle. Plans include expanding services to used car sales, maintenance, rentals, the import-export of vehicles and parts, and launching customer service centers, customized modifications, and livestreaming facilities, according to company CEO Shao Junkan.
\n
According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China exported 3.68 million vehicles in the first seven months of 2025, up 12.8 percent year-on-year. Among them, NEV exports reached 1.31 million units, jumping 84.6 percent year-on-year.
\n
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi praised Chinese EVs as "unbelievable" for their advanced features, affordability, and rapid innovation, fueled by integrated supply chains, government support, and massive scale.
\n
Speaking on a podcast, Khosrowshahi said China is not just building EVs, it is innovating across the entire EV ecosystem — from battery technology to charging infrastructure and software.
\n
caoyingying@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "018WORLD - Houthis vow retaliation after PM's death in Israeli attacks",
"description": "

Top officials of Yemen's Houthi group have vowed retaliation as it confirmed on Saturday that Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi of the Houthi-backed government, along with several other ministers, was killed in Israeli strikes on Thursday.
\n
The attack in Sanaa was the first to kill most senior Houthi officials. It came four days after Israeli strikes on the capital on Aug 24 killed 10 people and wounded more than 90, according to Houthi health officials.
\n
In a statement carried by Saba News Agency, the group acknowledged that the officials were hit during a workshop reviewing government activities over the past year, and that several other ministers were wounded and remain in hospital. It did not say how many ministers were killed.
\n
Quoting unnamed sources, Israeli media reported on Friday that the Israeli army attacked the entire Houthi Cabinet, including the prime minister and 12 other ministers.
\n
Meanwhile, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported that the group's deputy prime minister, Mohammed Miftah, was appointed to run a caretaker government in Sanaa.
\n
Following the confirmation of the deaths of the senior officials, Mahdi al-Mashat, head of the Supreme Political Council — the Houthis' highest governing body in Sanaa — said in a speech aired by al-Masirah TV that "Israel should await dark days".
\n
"Our stance remains as it is and will remain until the aggression ends and the siege is lifted, no matter how great the challenges," Mashat said. "We shall take vengeance, and we shall forge from the depths of wounds a victory."
\n
According to Saba News Agency, the Houthi Defense Minister Mohammed Nasser al-Atifi said forces "are ready at all levels to confront" Israel, whereas Mohammed Abdulkarim al-Gumari, Houthi military chief of staff, said "the Israeli aggression on civilian sites will not pass without punishment".
\n
Israel said its air force carried out a "significant operation" targeting a meeting of the Houthi Cabinet in Sanaa while its members were watching a speech by the group's leader, Abdulmalik al-Houthi, who vowed to continue support for Palestinians.
\n
On Saturday, Iran strongly condemned the Israeli airstrikes against Houthi leaders. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called the attack "a clear example of aggression against the Yemeni people and their legitimate government during a time of intense struggle against Israel", the IRNA news agency reported.
\n
The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have carried out drone and missile attacks on Israel since November 2023 in what they describe as showing solidarity with Palestinians during the Gaza conflict.
\n
Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-held areas, targeting airports, power stations and ports in Sanaa and the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, with Thursday's airstrikes believed to have dealt the most serious blow to the group.
\n
The United States announced a deal with the Houthis to end the strikes in return for an end to attacks on Red Sea shipping in May. However, the Houthis said the agreement did not include halting attacks on targets aligned with Israel.
\n
The Houthis seized Sanaa in 2014, forcing the internationally recognized Yemeni government into exile in Aden. Since then, the group has controlled much of northern Yemen, including Sanaa and Hodeidah, and set up a government in the capital.
\n
Meanwhile, Israel has escalated efforts to evacuate Palestinians from Gaza City. That plan has been condemned by foreign governments and criticized in Israel as unnecessary and costly, as the great majority of Gazans have been displaced at least once and the United Nations has declared a famine.
\n
"It is impossible that a mass evacuation of Gaza City could ever be done in a way that is safe and dignified under the current conditions," Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said in a statement.
\n
In Gaza, 66 people were killed on Saturday, the territory's health authorities said. Since Oct 7, 2023, Israel's military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 63,000 people and injured over 160,000 others.
\n
Abu Mohammed Kishko, a resident of the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza City, told Agence France-Presse that the bombardments the previous night had been "insane".
\n
"It didn't stop for a second, and we didn't sleep all night," the 42-year-old said.
\n
At a Saturday rally in Tel Aviv demanding the negotiated release of the remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza, captives' families warned the impending offensive could imperil their lives.
\n
Xinhua and agencies contributed to this story.
\n
cuihaipei@chinadaily.com.cn
\n
Line truncated

"title": "018WORLD - Nanjing Massacre film comes to Europe",
"description": "

\n
The acclaimed Chinese historical movie Dead to Rights made its European premiere at the Mathaeser cinema in Munich on Friday, drawing a full house of more than 400 attendees and prompting reflection on one of the darkest chapters of 20th-century history.
\n
The movie, set against the backdrop of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, perpetrated by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, tells the story of a small photography studio and its patrons who strive to preserve humanity and conscience amid catastrophe.
\n
Since its release in China, Dead to Rights has drawn widespread public attention for its emotional storytelling and historical weight.
\n
Qiu Xuejun, China's consul general in Munich, co-hosted the premiere, saying that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War. He praised the role of German businessman John Rabe, who, during the Nanjing Massacre, established a safety zone and saved countless civilians.
\n
"His humanitarian courage is part of both the memory of Sino-German friendship and the shared struggle against fascism," Qiu said.
\n
In an interview after the event, Bernd Einmeier, president of the German-Chinese Association for Economy, Education, and Culture, said the movie is "very important". "It's also very important for Europe to know about the Nanjing Massacre. Because honestly, most Europeans have never heard about this, they have no clue what happened there."
\n
Gao Ye, the lead actress, shared a video message, saying she was honored to take part in the European premiere and grateful to audiences in Germany for their willingness to "listen to history and remember the past". She encouraged viewers to treasure peace and human dignity in today's world.
\n
Thomas Rabe, John Rabe's grandson, also addressed the audience in a video message. He recalled his grandfather's efforts in Nanjing in 1937-38, when more than 200,000 Chinese civilians found refuge in the safety zone.
\n
Reading from his grandfather's wartime diary and letters, Rabe underscored the responsibility of younger generations to protect peace and care for others. "Peace today was hard-won," he said. "China endured unimaginable hardship to secure victory, and our continuing humanitarian work together makes me proud."
\n
Erhard Rau, chairman of the German Cultural and Economic Promotion Association, said the film should be screened worldwide. "It is not so much about carrying these terrible experiences within us," he said. "It is about what we can learn from them — for the future. That is why it is so important that films like this are shown, so we can connect with the fate of those people."
\n
Among younger attendees, German social media influencer Aaron Zehren said he knew little about the Nanjing Massacre before the screening. "After watching, I gained a much deeper understanding of the tragic experiences of Nanjing's civilians," he said. "The historical facts must be shown to the world."
\n
Diplomats from the Canadian, United States and South African consulates in Munich attended the European premiere, which was conceived not only as a cinematic event but also as a gesture of remembrance and dialogue.
\n
The film will next screen in Italy, the United Kingdom and other European countries. As Qiu noted, "The memory of the past must be preserved — not for hatred, but to safeguard peace and remind future generations of the fragility of civilization."
\n
Xinhua contributed to this story.
\n
zhangzhouxiang@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",
