The breathtaking artwork, on display at Huihe Stone Cultural Park in Xiamen, Fujian province, is a prime example of an intricate craft known as Huian shadow carving.
\n
The artist behind the piece is 58-year-old Li Yahua, the 16th-generation inheritor of the art form, which uses black-and-white shading to create detailed images on stone with special needle-like alloy steel tools. Created in 1994, it took Li about a year to complete the piece, tapping around 1.2 billion points onto the stone.
\n
The art form, originating from Huian county in Fujian, has a history of more than 300 years and has been passed down through generations. Li began her apprenticeship as a teenager with her father, Li Zousheng, who helped craft the reliefs on the Monument to the People's Heroes in Beijing's Tian'anmen Square.
\n
Li recalled her father's strict demeanor as he corrected her when her mind wandered.
\n
"It was his sternness that instilled in me the essence of stone carving: calmness, dedication and concentration — a spirit that has endured in Chinese stone carving," she said.
\n
Li mastered various stone carving techniques and developed a more delicate style known as Huihe shadow carving. In 1988, a piece she created sold for nearly 5,000 yuan ($699), which motivated her to devote herself to the craft.
\n
"Traditional stone carving is made in three-dimensional forms, while shadow carving is like painting on stone with dots," Li explained.
\n
The craft requires artists to stay highly focused while skillfully applying wrist strength to adjust the density and depth of the dots. The significant strain on her wrist and eyesight led to medical problems for Li. When she was 29, Twelve Beauties became the last piece she completed on her own.
\n
In the 1990s, traditional industries faced challenges from the widespread adoption of machinery. Stone carvers worked harder for meager incomes, and urbanization and market stagnation threatened the survival of Huian shadow carving techniques.
\n
With a keen sense of the market, Li began to transform her approach. She integrated traditional carving techniques with innovative applications such as the restoration of ancient buildings and the creation of themed landscapes.
\n
In 2008, she established Huihe Stone Cultural Park to promote and protect Huihe shadow carving. Since then, her team has undertaken various projects, including restoring ancient buildings, landscaping gardens, creating sculptures, installing stone wall decorations and setting up exhibitions.
\n
In addition to preserving the culture, Li has expanded the art form's influence by taking on apprentices and integrating the art with cultural exchange, tourism and leisure activities. Her initiatives have been vital in safeguarding the techniques and revitalizing the industry.
\n
The park has nurtured the younger generation's interest through educational activities. On May 18, in celebration of International Museum Day, a family tour themed around stone carving attracted more than 3,000 participants.
\n
Li's team has also incorporated works into everyday essentials, creating products such as tea sets and incense holders. They've also added color to the traditionally black-and-white art form, transcending its monochromatic origins. Many people have commissioned her team to customize wedding photos using shadow carving.
\n
"It is only when stone carving becomes an integral part of daily life that this craft can truly endure," Li said.
\n
In 2019, Li's son Dai Yian chose to join her after graduating from college. Li said she's lucky because "many craftsmen struggle to pass their skills to the younger generation."
\n
Born in 1996, Dai has embraced the traditional craft while incorporating contemporary elements. His innovative tea saucers featuring Chinese zodiac animals have been popular, with more than 20,000 units sold.
\n
In 2021, Huian shadow carving was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. Dai has since become the 17th-generation inheritor of Huihe shadow carving.
\n
Li's team has experimented with features that appeal to younger audiences. Shadow carvings of popular cartoon characters such as Nezha and Sun Wukong have proven popular.
\n
To further promote the techniques, Li and her team have turned to new media and livestreaming platforms.
\n
"We have great products, and we need to promoLine truncated

"title": "008COMMENT - Pioneering Shenzhen SEZ to continue spearheading reform and opening-up",
|
||||
"description": "

Tuesday marks the 45th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The establishment of the SEZ was a great innovative move to advance the socialist modernization of the country, and the SEZ continues to prove its relevance in the new era.
\n
Over the past four and a half decades, Shenzhen has changed beyond all recognition from a small unknown town to an international innovation hub.
\n
In the process, Shenzhen's gross domestic product has soared to 3.68 trillion yuan ($514.5 billion) in 2024 from 270 million yuan in 1980.
\n
The city now boasts about 25,000 high-tech enterprises, among which over 2,600 are AI-focused enterprises above the designated size. As a leading light in the development of artificial intelligence and its application in the country, how Shenzhen's AI sector fares and how effectively the AI technology is applied in real world scenarios will provide a reference for the rest of the country.
\n
This is an epitome of the important role the city plays on China's economic map today. Its development over the past decades has laid a solid foundation for Shenzhen to build itself into a pilot zone for socialism with Chinese characteristics.
\n
To that end, Shenzhen should further increase its capabilities to implement the new development philosophy, build a new pattern to deepen all-around reform, expand opening-up on all fronts, and contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It should continue to be a pioneer in contributing new policies, development models, experience, talents and know-how to the country.
\n
This explains why the central authorities issued guidelines in June that emphasize strengthening the integration of innovation, industry, capital and talent chains, while exploring new pathways, scenarios and platforms for Greater Bay Area cooperation. The document highlights that Shenzhen's reform explorations are to play "a crucial role in demonstrating and leading" by generating replicable and scalable successful practices.
\n
To better play its assigned role in the new era, Shenzhen is to further open up the service sector in key fields such as telecommunications, healthcare and finance, so as to contribute more replicable practices for expanding China's service industry openness. In the process, the central government is also doing all it can to create a supportive and inclusive policy environment to help Shenzhen foster new competitive capabilities and growth drivers.
\n
The guidelines issued in June are based on a policy portfolio earmarked for the city that was rolled out in 2020, and represent a continuity of the central authorities' policy on Shenzhen.
\n
Thanks to these policies and its pioneering spirit, Shenzhen enjoys considerable autonomy and a broader space to carry out reforms aimed at enhancing governance and regulatory capabilities in key high-tech and service sectors.
\n
By exploring ways to make breakthroughs in these fields, Shenzhen, as an experimental field, is again tasked with offering the country tested and effective policies to promote reform and opening-up in key aspects.
\n
Shenzhen's development and contribution to the country explain what drives the nation to become a better self over the past decades, as "only reformers can advance, only innovators can thrive, and only those who reform and innovate will prevail".
\n
By advancing reforms and opening-up at a higher starting point, to a higher level, and for higher goals, Shenzhen can further amplify its role as a key engine in the Greater Bay Area and as a radiating hub in the national development strategy.
\n
With what Shenzhen has achieved in the past 45 years, there is enough reason to believe that Shenzhen will continue to pioneer a path forward in its assigned role.
\n

",

"description": "

Dock workers carry out mooring operations for a container ship at Chancay Port in Peru on May 16.
\n
For decades, Chancay was a quiet town north of Lima, Peru, better known for its fishing community and slow rhythm. That changed after the Chancay Port was officially inaugurated in November 2024.
\n
Built in just three years through Chinese-Peruvian collaboration, the port shortens the shipping time across the Pacific by nearly one-third, reduces logistics costs by 20 percent and is expected to directly create more than 8,000 jobs.
\n
Since then, cargo ships have been docking in record numbers. Following the launch of a direct corridor with Shanghai, ships now run twice a week, carrying goods such as fish meal, fruits and copper eastward and bringing back a slew of manufactured goods from the large manufacturing bases in Asia. For exporters and importers, this regular service has ensured speed and certainty.
\n
"The Port of Chancay is the first port on South America's Pacific coast capable of handling large-capacity container ships," said Rosa Elis Teles Galletta, a researcher at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. "Its inauguration not only connects Peru to the Chinese market but also redefines trade relations throughout the region, particularly through the connection between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans."
\n
The outsized influence of the port may be most visible on Chancay's main boulevard, where storefronts brim with imports like toys, kitchenware and flasks. Local traders have been importing such goods at lower cost and distributing them swiftly.
\n
Figures reflect how quickly the megaport is reshaping trade. In the first six months of 2025, shipments along the Chancay-Shanghai corridor totaled 78,000 metric tons with a value of 1.72 billion yuan ($241 million), pushing trade between the two hubs up by nearly 35 percent, according to data from Shanghai Customs.
\n
Products such as avocado, mango and blueberry are now shipped directly to China in greater volumes. On July 4, Shanghai's Yangshan Port received the season's first blueberry consignment from Chancay, 11.7 tons in total.
\n
To help small businesses participate in the boom, the Chancay Chamber of Commerce launched its "Importing is Easy" program, which guides entrepreneurs through customs, formalization and access to global supply chains.
\n
"These initiatives are important because they provide local users with the tools and advice they need to conduct their foreign trade operations efficiently, as well as to increase their profitability, improve operational processes, and take advantage of business opportunities," said Ruben Tang, head of the Office of Relations with Asia at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
\n
The benefits, Tang notes, extend far beyond trade.
\n
Ripple effects
\n
With the port at their doorstep, Chancay could see ripple effects from tourism, logistics, commerce and real estate with new transport services and hotels opening up along with trading companies and housing projects.
\n
Tang believes the model can be replicated elsewhere in South America, helping smaller cities grow through logistics modernization and improved access to international markets.
\n
"It can also serve as a model for addressing the challenges of the external market with greater confidence and capacity," he added.
\n
Built to Chinese standards, the megaport features automation and its own 5G network, placing the terminal in Peru on par with the world's most advanced terminals.
\n
"The infrastructure represents a significant advance for Peru's logistics network and allows port workers, mostly Peruvians, to gain experience operating a terminal comparable to the most modern in the world," Galletta explained.
\n
Chinese migration to Peru dates back to 1847 but the long relationship has strengthened over the past couple of decades, culminating in the China-Peru Free Trade Agreement signed in 2009. Peru joined the Belt and Road Initiative a decade later.
\n
China has been Peru's largest trading partner for 10 consecutive years, accounting for up to 39 percent of Peruvian exports.
\n

",

China has been the UAE's largest trade partner for years. What began as a $2 billion trade relationship between the UAE and China in 2000 has expanded 50-fold, reaching $102 billion in 2024, official data show.
\n
The undersecretary said the UAE-China economic relationship has expanded well beyond trade into long-term collaboration on industrial projects, innovation and sustainability.
\n
"Our bilateral cooperation has matured far beyond trade flows. It now encompasses transformational investments, next-generation infrastructure and clean energy collaboration," he added. "Chinese investment into the UAE has grown 16 percent, while the UAE's investment into China has surged by 120 percent, reflecting reciprocal trust and institutional confidence."
\n
Looking forward, the undersecretary said he believes Abu Dhabi and China share highly complementary strengths across several future-focused sectors, paving the way for deeper bilateral cooperation in key areas including advanced manufacturing and industrial integration, clean and renewable energy, AI, life sciences as well as food and water security.
\n
"There is a strong strategic alignment between Abu Dhabi's sector-focused clusters and China's global industrial strengths," he noted. "Initiatives such as the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries Cluster, the AgriFood Growth and Water Abundance Cluster, and the Health, Endurance, Longevity and Medicine Cluster reflect Abu Dhabi's targeted approach to economic development. These clusters closely mirror China's leadership in advanced manufacturing, clean energy, biotech and smart logistics."
\n
A flagship of Abu Dhabi-China collaboration is JOCIC Park, where nearly 40 Chinese firms have collectively invested over $10 billion in energy equipment, chemicals and smart manufacturing, helping Abu Dhabi significantly scale up its industrial capabilities.
\n
"Abu Dhabi and China are not just trading partners, they are co-architects of a new global economic era, grounded in mutual respect and driven by a shared vision of future-ready growth," he said.
\n
In 2024, the launch of the Qingdao Overseas Integrated Service Center marked the partnership's new phase, he said. The center serves as a gateway for Chinese enterprises to expand in the Middle East while giving Abu Dhabi companies access to Chinese technology and expertise. Priority areas include high-end manufacturing, new energy, advanced materials and information technology.
\n
"Abu Dhabi is rapidly expanding its innovation ecosystem and views China as a key strategic partner in the development of future-oriented, technology-led industries," he said. "The partnership potential spans a wide range of priority sectors, starting with AI and advanced technologies."
\n
Abu Dhabi, home to the world's first graduate-level AI university — the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence — is actively pursuing joint AI research initiatives with Chinese institutions to apply AI in areas including healthcare, energy, urban planning and language processing.
\n
The emirate is also pushing into smart cities, urban innovations and the mobility sector, with opportunities for Chinese firms in 5G-enabled systems, internet of things applications, electric vehicles and battery technology. In fintech and digital finance, Abu Dhabi sees scope for Chinese companies to work alongside Abu Dhabi counterparts in cross-border payment solutions, e-KYC (know your customer) systems, and digital asset products tailored to emerging markets.
\n
"Abu Dhabi presents a future-ready environment rooted in innovation, where Chinese enterprises and institutions can collaborate not only for shared economic benefit, but also to codevelop global benchmarks and breakthrough technologies that address pressing development challenges across sectors," he said.
\n
ouyangshijia@chinadaily.comLine truncated

The event now promotes not only cooperation between Ningxia and Arab countries but partnership with those involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.
\n
With the theme of "Innovation, Green Development and Prosperity", this year's expo will feature BRI-related trade and investment promotion activities, two institutional events, six major exhibition zones, eight subevents and other economic and trade networking activities.
\n
Among BRI-related activities will be the Promotion Event on Overseas Industrial Parks and Infrastructure Investment and Construction in BRI Countries, the Multinational Economic and Trade Cooperation Meeting in Ningxia, and the China-Arab States Green and Low-Carbon Products Matchmaking and Exchange Event.
\n
The United Arab Emirates is the guest country of honor, which features a UAE national pavilion and is set to host a promotion conference on China-UAE economic and trade cooperation along with some visits. The Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is invited as the theme province, with Xinjiang pavilion exhibition and display activities, a Xinjiang-Ningxia investment promotion and industrial cooperation matchmaking meeting, and inspection and observation tours.
\n
The six major exhibition zones are for BRI-related countries, regional economic cooperation, central State-owned enterprises, clean energy, the digital economy and specialty commodities.
\n
The digital economy exhibition zone comprises displays of artificial intelligence, gaming industries, smart meteorology and cross-border e-commerce, with the AI and gaming sector exhibition areas being new.
\n
In the clean energy display area, the "green electricity application zone" is to be set up for the first time and many leading companies will bring cutting-edge technologies and solutions. State Grid Ningxia Electric Power will showcase a model for the local consumption of new energy power.
\n
The cross-border e-commerce exhibition has invited four leading platforms in the field — Amazon, Alibaba.com, Wayfair and Noon — and 56 other companies. Its predecessor was the China (Ningxia) International Investment and Trade Fair and the China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum, which was held annually from 2010 to 2012. Approved by the State Council, the forum was renamed the China-Arab States Expo in 2012.Since 2013, it has been held biennially.
\n
The six sessions of the expo have attracted the participation of 112 countries and regions, more than 400 important Chinese and foreign political figures, and over 7,500 domestic and foreign enterprises.
\n
In terms of mechanism building, the expo adheres to a distinctive model of organization and the mechanism of guest countries and theme provinces. It has invited six Arab countries — the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia — as national guests of honor, and six Chinese provincial-level regions as theme provinces.
\n
The expo focuses on practical economic and trade cooperation, aligning with the development strategies of China and Arab countries, and sets up diverse activities mainly based on trade in goods, services and technology. It has continuously fostered cooperation in trade and investment, modern agriculture, science and technology, green energy, digital economy, and healthcare. "title": "005CHINA - Ticket stubs give boost to economy",
|
||||
"description": "

NANCHANG — At halftime of a soccer league match in Jiangxi province, spectator Li Zide unexpectedly learned that his ticket could get him half off the usual price of indoor skiing at a nearby scenic spot.
\n
"I'd always thought winter sports were expensive, but this discount was the perfect chance to give it a try," he said. The next day, Li headed straight to the spot to give skiing a go.
\n
The 2025 Jiangxi City Football Super League kicked off in mid-July, attracting fans from across the country.
\n
"Most spectators are young people and families. They are exactly our target customers," said Liu Xin, a staff member at Jiangxi's Wugong Mountain scenic area.
\n
The site has seen a surge in visitors after offering discounts to holders of soccer match tickets.
\n
"Many come directly after matches to enjoy activities such as barbecues, stream trekking, fruit picking and camping. Our revenues have grown noticeably," Liu revealed.
\n
Today, ticket stubs are far more than just simple mementos, instead serving to fuel the rise of the "ticket-stub economy" — a model in which tickets from transportation services, cultural and tourism activities, and sports events are able to be used to enjoy discounts, redeem points or unlock other benefits in the course of subsequent spending.
\n
"The ticket stub economy links separate tourism, transportation and commercial scenarios — turning one purchase into a chain of spending," said Zhou Yongbo, a professor of tourism management at Soochow University.
\n
Concertgoer Xu Lei experienced this phenomenon firsthand in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi.
\n
"I was surprised to find I could get discounts at more than 60 restaurants with my concert ticket. These bonus surprises made me want to stay longer," he said.
\n
Jiangxi is not alone. In 2024, Shanghai trialled a ticket-stub program during an exhibition at the Shanghai Museum, giving visitors discounts on shopping and dining experiences. Official data showed that the event generated tens of billions of yuan in spending.
\n
In May this year, Shanghai rolled out an action plan to promote the ticket-stub economy, encouraging malls and scenic spots to offer discounts to holders of exhibition or event tickets.
\n
During this year's Beijing International Film Festival, ticket holders enjoyed discounts at 1,100 businesses in over 30 commercial districts, attracting 76.66 million visits and driving 25.17 billion yuan ($3.51 billion) in spending.
\n
Data from Chinese travel services platform Qunar shows that a single ticket can generate secondary spending worth as much as twice the ticket price, and ticket stubs can help tourists save an average of 15 to 30 percent on related expenses.
\n
As the ticket-stub economy fuels waves of consumption, the industry is also exploring ways to ensure its long-term growth.
\n
According to Zhou Jianjun, a professor at the College of Finance and Statistics at Hunan University, governments can use policy tools such as tax breaks and subsidies to lower the cost of merchant participation, as well as establish cross-industry collaboration platforms to clarify the rules.
\n
Zhou Yongbo also suggested enhancing ticket stub design to make them into collectible souvenirs and adopting anti-counterfeiting technologies such as blockchain to prevent misuse.
\n
"Most importantly, the development of the ticket-stub economy should be rooted in local characteristics, in order to enhance its competitiveness," he added.
\n

",
