He was accompanied by two local friends who guided him to a marvelous nature scene called "Birds' Paradise" — a riverside banyan tree believed to have been thriving for over 380 years. The tree grew to be so massive that it looked like a small forest from afar, with hundreds of birds nestled within it.
\n
Although the tree's vitality struck him, Ba Jin felt a bit disappointed because none of the birds came to welcome him.
\n
Early the next day, he passed by the banyan tree again. This time, he was caught by an impressive flock of birds flying around the tree, flittering in and out of their nests on the branches.
\n
Later, in Birds' Paradise, a prose about his encounter with the tree, Ba Jin wrote: "The previous night, my eyes deceived me. The 'Birds' Paradise' is indeed a paradise of birds!"
\n
Decades later, the same vibrant nature scene captured the interest of Zhu Danian (1916-95) so intensely that the noted artist and designer depicted the Birds' Paradise in a commissioned painting.
\n
For the ceramic painting, Ode to the Forest, Zhu reenacted the tree's lush leaves, expansive roots, and dense branches to create a canopy above the river, populated by a dozen egrets flying between the spread branches.
\n
The 20-meter-long piece was unveiled in 1979 and hung in a restaurant at the Beijing Capital International Airport.
\n
Today, a print of Ode to the Forest covers the entire wall of the ground-floor exhibition hall in the Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing. It is a major attraction at Attuning to Life, Ode to the Forest, an ongoing exhibition until Nov 20 at the museum, which displays Zhu's symphony of colors and biodiversity.
\n
The print of Ode to the Forest is 10 meters tall and 30 meters in length, making it much larger than the original painting, according to the exhibition's curator Sun Yiwei. The print offers the audience a close-up view to examine the rich details of the biological and cultural brilliance of South China. For his final work, Zhu added tropical rainforest scenes found in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province, including a boat that carries the area's ethnic groups once rode in.
\n
Also on show are dozens of sketches of the outdoors and paintings of Zhu, which were donated by Zhu's family in 2021.
\n
"They are true to what the tree actually looks like," says Shi Yingkun, a visitor from Jiangmen. "The twisted roots and tangled branches look vividly real."
\n
The exhibition charts Zhu's diverse, fruitful career. He was considered a pivotal figure in art design and education in the second half of the 20th century. While he taught at the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University, Zhu painted and designed to initiate reforms in the field, and his productivity helped build a visual art vocabulary that took root in China's history and cultural traditions.
\n
Tsinghua University Art Museum held an exhibition in 2021 to showcase Zhu's methods for drawing details in pen draft sketches, then filling them in with color for the final paintings.
\n
"This time, we are focusing on his celebration of life and awe of the rules of the universe by integrating the tree, birds, flowers, men, and mountains into a full showcase of his paintings," Sun says.
\n
"He left a body of work that goes beyond a loyal depiction of what he saw. "description": "

Members of the DC Metropolitan Police detain a person, who had an altercation between members of the public, in Washington, DC, on Thursday.
\n
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration, stepping up its crackdown on policing in the nation's capital, on Thursday named the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration to be Washington's "emergency police commissioner" with all the powers of the police chief — a significant move that increases national control over the city as part of the federal government's law-enforcement takeover.
\n
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a directive issued on Thursday evening that DEA boss Terry Cole will assume "powers and duties vested in the District of Columbia Chief of Police". The Metropolitan Police Department "must receive approval from Commissioner Cole" before issuing any orders, Bondi said.
\n
It was not immediately clear where the move left Pamela Smith, the city's current police chief, who works for the mayor.
\n
The attorney general's directive comes hours after Smith directed MPD officers to share information with immigration agencies regarding people not in custody, such as someone involved in a traffic stop or checkpoint. The Justice Department said Bondi disagreed with the police chief's directive because it allowed for continued enforcement of "sanctuary policies".
\n
Bondi said she was rescinding that order as well as other MPD policies limiting inquiries into immigration status and preventing arrests based solely on federal immigration warrants. All new directives must now receive approval from Cole, the attorney general said.
\n
The late-night announcement came after an eventful day in the ongoing federal operation. Smith's earlier directive effectively brought together Trump's moves on city law enforcement and his nationwide efforts to curb immigration, and Trump had praised it in the hours before Bondi's announcement.
\n
A population already tense from days of ramp-up began seeing more significant shows of force across the city on Thursday. National Guard troops watched over some of the world's most renowned landmarks and Humvees took position in front of the busy main train station.
\n
Volunteers helped homeless people leave long-standing encampments — to where, exactly, was often unclear. Department of Homeland Security police stood outside Nationals Park.
\n
Drug Enforcement Administration agents patrolled The Wharf, a popular nightlife area, while Secret Service officers patrolled the Foggy Bottom neighborhood.
\n
The visibility of federal forces around the city, including in many high-traffic areas, was striking to residents going about their lives.
\n
Trump has the power to take over federal law enforcement for 30 days before Congress must review his actions, though he has said he'll reevaluate as that deadline approaches.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",
