"title": "005COMMENT - Healthy China-India relations good for regional development and stability",
"description": "

It is obvious that the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in October 2024, in Kazan, Russia, has paved the way for the thawing of bilateral relations between the two countries.
\n
The frequent meetings between high-level officials of the two countries would not have been possible without the consensus of the two leaders that their countries should develop friendly ties.
\n
Since differences on border issues have cast a shadow over the development of relations between the two neighbors, particularly after the clash between their border troops in 2020, maintaining high-level exchanges is vital to prevent them from hindering the development of bilateral ties. So the visit to India by Foreign Minister Wang Yi starting on Monday is pertinent. It comes shortly after the Chinese side extended a welcome to Modi's planned visit to China on Aug 31 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin, the first visit of the Indian leader in over seven years.
\n
Wang's visit, at the invitation of India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who visited China in December 2024 for a security representative meeting with the Chinese foreign minister, represents the continuation of the security talks mechanism. The mechanism is conducive to the two sides building on the positive momentum they have maintained to keep on the right track their joint efforts to properly manage their border differences.
\n
The two sides can work together to transform the hard-earned consensus on the border issue into more concrete actions to ease the tensions and promote exchanges so as to avoid allowing the border issue to define the overall ties. For the two major Eastern civilizations and major emerging economies that are adjacent to each other, the essence of stable China-India relations lies in how to live in harmony and achieve mutual success.
\n
It is particularly important for the two neighbors to manage their differences when cooperation between the two nations is badly needed for the economic and social development of the world's two most populous countries. By effectively expanding their common interests and tapping into their economic structural complementarity, they will find more reasons to avoid their border disputes from standing in the way of their ties.
\n
In his talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Beijing last month, Wang called on both sides to aim high, plan for the long term, and adhere to good-neighborliness and friendship. It was good to see his Indian counterpart actively echo that call, pledging India's willingness to work together with China for the common good of the two countries and the region.
\n
Indeed, New Delhi has taken certain measures to promote people-to-people exchanges, and implied its openness to Chinese investment. Even though some of the measures remain far from meeting their intended targets, they at least demonstrate New Delhi's recognition of its obligation to undo what it has done to help straighten out the ties.
\n
It is hoped that the Indian side can expedite its actions in relevant fields so as to match its words with deeds, demonstrating that its expressed willingness to repair ties with China is not just a gesture due to the United States' tariff threats, but instead a genuine commitment to a sustainable good-neighborly relationship.
\n
China's stance and policy on Sino-Indian relations have been consistent, as it always views relations from a strategic height and with the bigger picture in mind, and handles their differences with due prudence and vision. It is willing to work with India to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, consistently enhance political mutual trust, and meet each other halfway to expand exchanges and cooperation. India should reciprocate China's sincerity by doing its part to properly manage differences, and strengthen coordination via multilateral platforms, such as the SCO, to promote the healthy development of China-India ties.
\n
With the rise of unilateralism and protectionism, China and India, as two major members of the Global South, are shouldering the responsibility to work together to realize a fair and just world order and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization. Amicable relations between China and India are in the interests of both countries as well as regional peace and development.
\n

",

He was accompanied by two local friends who guided him to a marvelous nature scene called "Birds' Paradise" — a riverside banyan tree believed to have been thriving for over 380 years. The tree grew to be so massive that it looked like a small forest from afar, with hundreds of birds nestled within it.
\n
Although the tree's vitality struck him, Ba Jin felt a bit disappointed because none of the birds came to welcome him.
\n
Early the next day, he passed by the banyan tree again. This time, he was caught by an impressive flock of birds flying around the tree, flittering in and out of their nests on the branches.
\n
Later, in Birds' Paradise, a prose about his encounter with the tree, Ba Jin wrote: "The previous night, my eyes deceived me. The 'Birds' Paradise' is indeed a paradise of birds!"
\n
Decades later, the same vibrant nature scene captured the interest of Zhu Danian (1916-95) so intensely that the noted artist and designer depicted the Birds' Paradise in a commissioned painting.
\n
For the ceramic painting, Ode to the Forest, Zhu reenacted the tree's lush leaves, expansive roots, and dense branches to create a canopy above the river, populated by a dozen egrets flying between the spread branches.
\n
The 20-meter-long piece was unveiled in 1979 and hung in a restaurant at the Beijing Capital International Airport.
\n
Today, a print of Ode to the Forest covers the entire wall of the ground-floor exhibition hall in the Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing. It is a major attraction at Attuning to Life, Ode to the Forest, an ongoing exhibition until Nov 20 at the museum, which displays Zhu's symphony of colors and biodiversity.
\n
The print of Ode to the Forest is 10 meters tall and 30 meters in length, making it much larger than the original painting, according to the exhibition's curator Sun Yiwei. The print offers the audience a close-up view to examine the rich details of the biological and cultural brilliance of South China. For his final work, Zhu added tropical rainforest scenes found in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province, including a boat that carries the area's ethnic groups once rode in.
\n
Also on show are dozens of sketches of the outdoors and paintings of Zhu, which were donated by Zhu's family in 2021.
\n
"They are true to what the tree actually looks like," says Shi Yingkun, a visitor from Jiangmen. "The twisted roots and tangled branches look vividly real."
\n
The exhibition charts Zhu's diverse, fruitful career. He was considered a pivotal figure in art design and education in the second half of the 20th century. While he taught at the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University, Zhu painted and designed to initiate reforms in the field, and his productivity helped build a visual art vocabulary that took root in China's history and cultural traditions.
\n
Tsinghua University Art Museum held an exhibition in 2021 to showcase Zhu's methods for drawing details in pen draft sketches, then filling them in with color for the final paintings.
\n
"This time, we are focusing on his celebration of life and awe of the rules of the universe by integrating the tree, birds, flowers, men, and mountains into a full showcase of his paintings," Sun says.
\n
"He left a body of work that goes beyond a loyal depiction of what he saw. Through a rainforest leaf or a flower petal, he ultimately pursued the beauty of harmony between men and living things, this world and the cosmos."
\n
Flowers, as important components in Zhu's aLine truncated

"title": "002CHINA - 19 punished for role in medical admission case",
"description": "

A total of 19 officials, doctors and educators from nine institutions in Beijing have been held accountable in the case of a junior physician who fabricated academic records and committed plagiarism to gain admission into a prestigious medical program, China's top health authority announced on Friday.
\n
The National Health Commission also urged the Peking Union Medical College to tighten checks on applications for its four-year doctoral program — which provides outstanding students majoring in another discipline with an accelerated pathway to become a doctor — strengthen academic integrity education and ensure a mandatory three-year residency program for all.
\n
The academic misconduct of the junior physician, surnamed Dong, surfaced after her extramarital affair with a senior surgeon at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, surnamed Xiao, was made public by his wife in mid-April.
\n
Following public doubts cast on Dong's enrollment certifications, dissertations and dubious residency experiences, the commission launched an official investigation in early May and announced the revocation of the medical licenses of Dong and Xiao for violations of professional and academic ethics later that month.
\n
In the latest investigation results published on Friday, the commission said that the China-Japan Friendship Hospital failed to rigorously implement medical quality safety management and medical ethics nurturing. Previously, Xiao was confirmed to have arbitrarily left a surgical room while a patient was under anesthesia due to an argument involving Dong, who was a trainee there.
\n
Moreover, officials and doctors from the Peking Union Medical College, Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences have been found to have overlooked loopholes in Dong's application materials and dissertations. Some resorted to nepotism to illegally transfer Dong to different departments during her residency.
\n
Dong's aunt, surnamed Ban, an official at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, aided in falsifying Dong's academic records that were later used as application materials. She also arranged for a university teacher to help her niece write a doctoral thesis.
\n
The commission said that the vice-president of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, surnamed Cui, was given a disciplinary admonition. The then vice-president of Peking Union Medical College, who was responsible for admissions and teaching, surnamed Zhang, was given a serious warning.
\n
Seventeen other officials or workers from hospitals and universities, including several chief physicians and surgeons, have also been given punishment, including admonitions, disciplinary reviews and warnings.
\n
A head nurse at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, the director of academic affairs at the Peking Union Medical College and an official at the University of Science and Technology Beijing have been removed from their positions. Dong's aunt was dismissed and removed from the teaching position.
\n
The commission added that the "four-plus-four-year" doctoral program that admitted Dong is meant to advance integration of medical education with other disciplines.
\n
It has now joined efforts with the Ministry of Education to urge the Peking Union Medical College to deepen rectifications, including specifying the range of applicants' undergraduate institutions and major categories, enhancing checks of academic records, and strength education on academic integrity and oversight over clinical internships.
\n
The commission also stresses ramping up quality requirements and defense procedures for theses and implementing an additional plagiarism check in the second year after thesis defense.
\n
All graduates from the program must complete a uniform three-year residency training period, it added.
\n
wangxiaoyu@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "006WORLD - Trump administration tightens control over DC police",
"description": "

Members of the DC Metropolitan Police detain a person, who had an altercation between members of the public, in Washington, DC, on Thursday.
\n
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration, stepping up its crackdown on policing in the nation's capital, on Thursday named the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration to be Washington's "emergency police commissioner" with all the powers of the police chief — a significant move that increases national control over the city as part of the federal government's law-enforcement takeover.
\n
Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a directive issued on Thursday evening that DEA boss Terry Cole will assume "powers and duties vested in the District of Columbia Chief of Police". The Metropolitan Police Department "must receive approval from Commissioner Cole" before issuing any orders, Bondi said.
\n
It was not immediately clear where the move left Pamela Smith, the city's current police chief, who works for the mayor.
\n
The attorney general's directive comes hours after Smith directed MPD officers to share information with immigration agencies regarding people not in custody, such as someone involved in a traffic stop or checkpoint. The Justice Department said Bondi disagreed with the police chief's directive because it allowed for continued enforcement of "sanctuary policies".
\n
Bondi said she was rescinding that order as well as other MPD policies limiting inquiries into immigration status and preventing arrests based solely on federal immigration warrants. All new directives must now receive approval from Cole, the attorney general said.
\n
The late-night announcement came after an eventful day in the ongoing federal operation. Smith's earlier directive effectively brought together Trump's moves on city law enforcement and his nationwide efforts to curb immigration, and Trump had praised it in the hours before Bondi's announcement.
\n
A population already tense from days of ramp-up began seeing more significant shows of force across the city on Thursday. National Guard troops watched over some of the world's most renowned landmarks and Humvees took position in front of the busy main train station.
\n
Volunteers helped homeless people leave long-standing encampments — to where, exactly, was often unclear. Department of Homeland Security police stood outside Nationals Park.
\n
Drug Enforcement Administration agents patrolled The Wharf, a popular nightlife area, while Secret Service officers patrolled the Foggy Bottom neighborhood.
\n
The visibility of federal forces around the city, including in many high-traffic areas, was striking to residents going about their lives.
\n
Trump has the power to take over federal law enforcement for 30 days before Congress must review his actions, though he has said he'll reevaluate as that deadline approaches.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

"title": "009LIFE - Camp fosters global passion for ancient structures",
"description": "

International volunteers participate in a summer camp on architectural heritage conservation in Shanxi province's Pingyao Ancient City.
\n
TAIYUAN — Amid the scorching summer heat of North China, 17 Chinese and international volunteers huddle beside the gatehouse of an ancient residence in the historic Pingyao county of Shanxi province, carefully restoring bricks under the watchful guidance of seasoned professionals.
\n
From Aug 1 to Wednesday, the Shanghai Ruan Yisan Heritage Foundation, together with Pingyao county, hosted a volunteer camp focused on architectural heritage conservation in Dongquan village, a traditional settlement in northern China.
\n
Over two weeks, the volunteers helped restore the gatehouse and surrounding walls of the centuries-old residence under the guidance of master craftsmen.
\n
They visited the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Pingyao Ancient City, as well as historic landmarks like Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple. The itinerary included meeting inheritors of local intangible cultural heritage, from traditional puppet performers to artisans of Pingyao's famed lacquerware craft.
\n
Of the 17 participants, six were from France. Leading the French group was 26-year-old Aurore Franche, a model with a deep passion for cultural heritage preservation. She saw it as a tangible link to the past, and joined the program to gain firsthand experience with traditional Chinese craftsmanship.
\n
"Chinese architecture is so beautiful, especially the incredible mortise and tenon structure," she says. "It's amazing how the pieces fit together so securely without glue or nails. That reflects the wisdom of ancient Chinese builders."
\n
Sara Zuniga, a university student from Mexico with a longstanding fascination for history, says her studies are fueled by a desire to understand the brilliance of past civilizations.
\n
"Unfortunately, many of Mexico's historical sites are damaged over time as development progresses. This makes me feel regretful and motivates me even more to protect what remains," she adds.
\n
For Zuniga, China — halfway across the globe — always seemed mysterious and captivating. "Before coming here, my impression of China was limited to what I had seen in films and reports from Western media. I wanted to see this ancient country for myself."
\n
At the restoration site, a young man fluent in Chinese soon caught the attention of fellow volunteers. Herwann Rocrou, 23, an archaeology student from France and an avid Sinology enthusiast, spends his spare time studying Chinese and has traveled to cities such as Shanghai and Suzhou, Jiangsu province. He has also explored ancient Chinese cultures, including the Yangshao culture and the Shang (c. 16th century-11th century BC) and Zhou (c. 11th century–256 BC) dynasties.
\n
He says he joined the Pingyao volunteer program to deepen his understanding of how traditional Chinese architecture is preserved and restored. "I love Chinese history and culture, and it's my dream to one day live in China with my girlfriend."
\n
During the program, international volunteers teamed up with skilled masons in Dongquan village, a nationally recognized historic site.
\n
They also visited ancient structures and relics in Liangcun village and explored Pingyao at night, one of China's best-preserved and inhabited ancient walled cities.
\n
According to Ding Feng, secretary general of the Ruan Yisan Heritage Foundation, the organization has held 48 volunteer camps across Shanxi, Guizhou, Fujian, Yunnan and other provinces since 2010.
\n
More than half of these activities have taken place in Shanxi, a province famous for its ancient architecture and home to over 28,000 historic structures. Nearly 1,000 international volunteers have taken part in the initiative over the past 15 years.
\n
"Our goal is to give the public, particularly young people, more opportunities to get directly involved in heritage protection," Ding says. "By working with their hands, they form a physical connection to traditional architecture, which deepens their emotional ties and sparks greater enthusiasm, initiative, and awareness for preserving cultural heritage."
\n

",
