In a roughly 30-square-meter store, shelves are lined with bracelets carrying a gentle tea scent. "Having experienced employment challenges myself as a disabled person, I opened this craft store to create job opportunities for others like me," said Zhang Ruixia, the store's manager, seated in her wheelchair.

The 36-year-old added that the orange color that dominates the store's logo, packaging and interior design was chosen for its warmth and inclusivity.
\n
Semi-paralyzed after a surgical mishap in 2016, Zhang initially sank into despair but managed to pull herself together within just six months.
\n
She then attempted various jobs — including as a graphic designer at an advertising agency and a telephone customer service staffer at a wheelchair retailer — but found that "these jobs demanded prolonged sitting, which the body simply couldn't endure".
\n
When Xu Hui, a public welfare worker, reached out to Zhang last year, she had already opened a small craft store in her hometown of Henan province after teaching herself various weaving techniques and beadwork designs through online videos.
\n
"Xu and I talked about how society is becoming more inclusive to people with disability, yet families with disabled people still face significant employment barriers, including some people who are unable to leave their homes to work, and mothers of those with intellectual disabilities struggling to take on full-time jobs," Zhang said. "I deeply resonated with his sentiments, so when he mentioned the Jingshan town project, I was like, 'That's it. Let's do it together.'"

Previously, support for people with disabilities mainly involved providing supplies and skills training, but they often remained unemployed in the end, Xu said.
\n
"Our preliminary research found that what companies care about most is not who makes the product, but its quality. People with disabilities often demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and cherish every job opportunity, making them well-suited for craftwork," Xu said.
\n
The project — primarily targeting large companies, with additional sales channels through e-commerce platforms and physical stores — aims to secure stable orders, enabling disabled individuals to work either from home or at the workshop, on a part-time or full-time basis, Xu said.
\n
Recognizing the feasibility and practicality of the project, the local government extended substantial support to expedite the store's opening. This involved streamlining the verification process for their volunteer group "Better and Better" and offering the physical store and the workshop at rents only covering water and electricity expenses, he added.
\n
"To distinguish the bracelets from others, we have creatively incorporated Jingshan tea into the bead-making process," Zhang said, adding that the tea, as one of Zhejiang's top 10 famous teas, is not only a local specialty but also a crucial cultural origin of the Japanese tea ceremony.

After three months of trials, Zhang finally developed a composite crafting technique that builds on traditional incense bead-making methods, with aged Jingshan tea as the primary raw material. This process involves grinding the tea leaves into a powder finer than 120 mesh (about 0.125 millimeters), blending it with an optimized ratio of plant-based adhesives, mechanically kneading the mixture to achieve cohesion, and finally drying it in the shade for structural stabilization.

The store opened in October, and businesses have offered the store partnership opportunities. In addition, around 50 disabled people have come forward to apply. They are able to take orders and be paid per piece after training.

Bai Yunfeng, a man in his late 40s who is crippled by polio, exhibits surprising dexterity despite lacking prior experience in bracelet making. He is capable of completing a simple design in just a couple of minutes.

"I used to work at a mechanical equipment assembly factory. However, this store has provided me with another fulfilling opportunity," Bai said. "Besides closer proximity to home and better pay, I feel like we are not objects of pity, but rather treated equally and valued for our capabilities here, which is very important to me."

Zhang said: "I hope to expand such stores nationwide, with tailored innovations for each place based on local specialties. I want to do my best to provide a shelter for those like me."

In an exclusive interview with China Daily ahead of the concept's 20th anniversary, Yu Hai, deputy director of the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, emphasized China's dedication to applying this concept in international cooperation to benefit the global community, especially developing nations.

"Under the scientific guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization, China has achieved remarkable accomplishments in exploring pathways and models that help transform 'lucid waters and lush mountains' into 'invaluable assets'," Yu said.

Xi, then secretary of the Communist Party of China Zhejiang Provincial Committee, first proposed the concept that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets "during an inspection in Anji county, Zhejiang province, on Aug 15, 2005.

President Xi has actively promoted the concept on many international occasions, calling for building a common homeland of coordinated advancement of economy and the environment.
\n
"His advocacy provides intellectual enlightenment for the international community to explore the path of green development and guidance for the global sustainable development agenda," said Yu.

As the world's largest developing country, China always maintains a global vision and demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility and mission as a major power, Yu emphasized.
\n
"Firmly adhering to the philosophy of 'teaching people how to fish rather than simply giving them fish', China has woven the concept into collaborative efforts such as the Belt and Road Initiative and South-South Cooperation, ensuring concrete benefits, particularly for developing nations," he said.

Localized adoption

Through the BRI, for instance, China has been implementing green projects such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power to share its approaches, technologies and experiences in practicing the concept, Yu added.

He said that this effort promotes the concept's localized adoption, making significant contributions to enhancing the ecological and environmental governance capabilities of developing countries and jointly building a clean and beautiful world.

The urgency to advance global environmental governance has grown, as the world rapidly advances the shift toward green and low-carbon initiatives. Against this backdrop, Yu said, the principle of "ecological and economic coordinated development", which is embedded in the concept, has become a widely accepted core tenet and central theme in the global drive for sustainable development.

The late John Cobb, a renowned United States theologian and environmentalist known as the father of green GDP — an economic indicator that adjusts conventional GDP by factoring in the environmental costs and benefits associated with economic activities — argued, for example, that the concept proposed by Xi dissolves the dualism between economic development and environmental protection, demonstrating to the world that environmental conservation and economic development can go hand in hand.

Yu also said that different government departments and regions in China have carried out extensive practices, exploring diverse pathways and innovative models, supported by a series of institutional arrangements implemented at the national level.

For instance, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has selected 240 practice innovation bases to promote the concept, according to Yu. He highlighted Dengkou county in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region as a model in implementing the concept.

As the county progresses in desertification control, it is also actively pursuing economic benefits by promoting ecological industries that support this effort, such as traditional Chinese medicine and solar power development, Yu noted, adding that local authorities have also employed supportive policy tools to enhance enthusiasm for sand prevention and control.

According to the Dengkou government, the forest and grass coverage in its sandy areas reached more than 37 percent as of 2023, compared with merely 0.04 percent in the 1950s.

The signs of a bull run are slowly but steadily emerging in China's A-share market, underpinned by ongoing structural reforms and sustained long-term capital inflows. Experts said the developing rally is expected to gain further traction on the back of policy support and a gradually improving external environment.

Hong Hao, chief investment officer at Lotus Asset Management, said the upward momentum of Chinese stocks will sustain for a long time if the US dollar's weakness proves to be a multiyear trend. Also, the Chinese market has been increasingly resilient in the face of negative tariff headlines.

Given the current favorable liquidity conditions in the Chinese market and the fear-of-missing-out sentiment, any corrections in the A-share market are likely to be quickly absorbed by buyers, he added.

Zhu Liang, chief investment officer at AllianceBernstein China, said that despite strong gains in recent weeks — with the Shanghai Composite Index up nearly 7 percent and the Shenzhen Component Index up more than 10 percent since July — valuations in the A-share market remain attractive.

Sounding a word of caution, some experts said that risk appetite in the A-share market may be suppressed by factors such as changes in tariff talks between China and the US, as well as domestic challenges facing the Chinese economy.

As Typhoon Podul is poised to make its second landfall along the coastal areas between Guangdong and Fujian provinces, transportation — particularly train services in the two provinces — was significantly affected on Wednesday.

A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday criticized the Lai Ching-te administration in Taiwan for prioritizing political self-interest over public welfare, following recent polls showing Lai's approval ratings were the lowest they've been since he took office last year.

The surveys, including one from Formosa Publishing and other "pro-independence" institutions in Taiwan, indicated a significant drop in satisfaction with Lai's performance, with dissatisfaction and distrust both exceeding 50 percent.

This decline in approval comes as Taiwan society expresses dissatisfaction over the United States' recent announcement of a 20 percent tariff on most of Taiwan's exports. This rate is higher than the 15 percent export tariff imposed on Japan and South Korea, which are major competitors to Taiwan, posing a substantial challenge for Taiwan businesses.

With the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau experiencing an increasingly warmer and wetter climate, soil carbon storage is expected to rise, according to a recent study. However, this increase is fragile and can be easily undermined by extreme events tied to global warming and human activities.
\n
"The total carbon sink of the ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau now accounts for around 15 percent of the nation's," said Wang Tao, corresponding author of the study published in academic journal Nature Communications. Wang, a researcher at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized the significance of understanding the plateau's carbon storage potential to support China's dual carbon goals — peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.
\n
The study revealed that the soil carbon pool on the plateau constitutes over 90 percent of its total ecosystem carbon pool, serving as the cornerstone that supports the plateau's ecological security barrier function.
\n
The research team conducted a systematic grid-based soil sampling campaign across the plateau, using multi-source observational data, including 4,170 soil profiles and long-term controlled incubation experiments, to develop an observation-constrained soil carbon cycle model. This model projects climate change impacts on the plateau's soil carbon stocks.
\n
"Previous studies often relied on field infrared warming experiments to simulate the impacts of climate warming on changes in soil carbon stocks, but these approaches have inherent limitations," Wang said.
\n
He noted that such experiments are costly and typically control only temperature as a single variable, neglecting interactions among multiple climate factors. In addition, regional sensitivity to warming varies significantly across the plateau, resulting in high uncertainty when extrapolating results to broader scales, Wang said.
\n
To address the challenges, the study analyzed 0-to-1-meter depth soil samples which were extracted from 2019 to 2022 — a layer storing over half of the plateau's total soil carbon — from diverse regions. By integrating experimental data into the model, the team revealed the plateau-wide response mechanism of soil carbon stocks to warming.
\n
The study found that as the climate gets warmer and wetter, it is expected to positively influence vegetation growth and enhance soil carbon accumulation. However, more than half the newly accumulated carbon will be in active or non-protected forms, making it highly sensitive to extreme global-warming events and grazing disturbances.
\n
"The permafrost regions of the plateau constitute one of its largest terrestrial carbon pools. However, accelerating permafrost thaw under climate change can trigger abrupt thermokarst collapse, rapidly releasing previously sequestered carbon. This vulnerability is particularly prominent in soils with non-protected forms," Wang said, warning that such releases could offset over half the carbon gains from climate mitigation efforts.

The study also synthesized 296 field grazing experiments from across the plateau, finding that if previous overgrazing management practices continue, grazing-induced carbon losses will almost entirely offset climate-driven carbon gains. Wang stressed the importance of effective grazing management, suggesting rotational grazing systems or restoring traditional nomadic practices to enable grassland regeneration.

He has trained multiple young Tibetan Opera performers, five of whom now lead their own apprentices. After transitioning from the stage to being an adviser, he now focuses on passing down the cultural essence of this ancient art.

The US Department of State released its annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices on Tuesday, about three months later than usual. However, the additional time has not been spent improving the content to align with facts, but instead on reducing it to about one-third the length of last year's reports.
\n
The tremendous amount of reediting work that has been done is to ensure that the reports conform with the US administration's policies, even though the State Department has described it as an effort to make the reports more "streamlined", "more readable" and adhering more closely to what's required to be in them by law.
\n
For instance, the agency removed whole categories of violations not "explicitly required by statute", including gender-based violence and environmental justice. The deleted material includes issues widely regarded as fundamental rights under international law, such as the right to a fair public trial, as National Public Radio observed in a report.
\n
According to a State Department memo the US media obtained about the editing of the reports, editors were ordered to remove references to diversity, equity, and inclusion, sexual violence against children and violation of privacy.
\n
Even though the US administration insists it remains committed to defending human rights, the "minimalist rewrite", as some US lawmakers put it, fundamentally serves the US' domestic politics, and might not comply with domestic law, which requires a "full and complete" accounting of internationally recognized human rights.
\n
The United States has compiled these reports on every country in the world since the 1970s. The reports, which are invariably patchwork based on carefully selected "reported facts", constitute grave interference in other countries' internal affairs, and the practice is widely criticized by the international community.
\n
That Congress still relies on these assessments to shape decisions on foreign aid and weapons sales clearly demonstrates the reports' politicized nature. Human rights protection is only an excuse for the US to justify its interventionist foreign policies as well as weaponized sanctions that have no legitimate basis in international law.
\n
The irony is that human rights are essentially a privilege enjoyed only by a few in the US. Racial discrimination, inequality, and forced repatriations and deportations are just the tip of the iceberg.
\n
In February, the US president signed an executive order pulling the country out of the United Nations Human Rights Council again, unwarrantedly citing "political bias", particularly against Israel, and the agency's alleged "failure" to adequately address human rights abuses globally as due cause.
\n
But the reality is it is the US that applies "political bias" on human rights issues, and it is the US that is actually, overtly or covertly, behind many human rights abuses and humanitarian crises around the world, such as the one unfolding in Gaza.
\n
The US baselessly criticizes China over so-called human rights issues related to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in the reports. If the US administration truly cares about the human rights of Muslims, why does it turn a blind eye to the hell on earth in Gaza? Why does it turn a blind eye to the historical injustices suffered by the Palestinian people? These are questions the Chinese ambassador to the UN raised recently at a UN gathering, toward which his US counterpart was as mute as a fish.
\n
The US withdrew from the United Nations human rights body in 2018 — on similar grounds, in disregard of the fact that its cutting off funding to the agency will seriously affect many of its critical humanitarian aid projects in the least developed countries.
\n
No wonder the extent to which the US government can manipulate the concept of "human rights" to suit its own policy changes has even made many ardent supporters of the US' weaponization of human rights dumbstruck. Many so-called bedrock principles of human rights, such as those related to gender, the environment, race and judicial justice, that have been taken for granted by generations of human rights advocates as the foundation of the US beacon, have bitten the dust.
\n
As such, the reports are naturally devoid of credibility. Instead of showing the US as being principled, they only serve to expose its hypocrisy and double standards on the issue. Using human rights as a political tool undermines humanity's core values and basic principles. It also poses serious risks, such as its potential to escalate conflicts and jeopardize cooperation on pressing global issues. Exercising political bias on human rights, the US only exacerbates the global turbulence with its latest annual human rights circus show.

Service levels also steadily improved with an increase in the number of large-scale and specialized berths. In 2024, the number of operational berths reached 22,219, of which 2,971 berths had a capacity of 10,000 tons or more, a 14.62 percent increase compared with 2020. The construction of port cluster systems has also begun to show results.
\n
The smart and green transformation of China's ports is in the fast lane. Technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, the internet of things and cloud computing are being used for remote port control, unmanned container truck scheduling, dynamic yard optimization and berth plan optimization. These measures have helped to significantly improve operational efficiency. China ranks first in the world in both the existing and under-construction scale of automated container and dry bulk terminals, while the creation of a number of near zero carbon ports is being expedited.

China's integration and optimization of port resources is also deepening, and multimodal transport is rapidly expanding. Currently, 10 coastal provinces and seven provinces along the Yangtze River have established provincial-level port groups and commenced integrated port operations.

The proposed US tariffs of up to 250 percent on pharmaceuticals could trigger shortages, inflate costs and disrupt the tightly integrated drug trade with Canada, health economists say.
\n
"A sudden, steep tariff would raise procurement costs for manufacturers and distributors, as the US sources most of its active pharmaceutical ingredients and many finished medicines from abroad," said Boshen Jiao, an assistant professor of pharmaceutical and health economics at the University of Southern California.
\n
United States President Donald Trump said on Aug 5 that the planned tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals could eventually reach 250 percent, in a bid to bring drug manufacturing back to the country.
\n
He said he will initially impose a "small tariff" on pharmaceuticals, but within a year to 18 months at the latest, he will raise the rate to 150 percent and then 250 percent.
\n
"This could prompt adjustments in sourcing, order delays or scaling back of certain product lines — straining the already fragile supply chains, especially for generic drugs with limited suppliers, and increasing the risk of shortages," Jiao said.
\n
With higher import costs and few short-term substitutes, "some of the added costs would likely be passed along to payers, pharmacies and ultimately patients", he said.
\n
The size of price increases would depend on competition and existing contracts, and "many products without domestic alternatives could see costs rise noticeably in the near term", he added.
\n
Some large US pharmaceutical companies have already announced plans for new domestic facilities, Jiao said.
\n
Over the longer term, he said there would be "higher sustained production costs" because manufacturing in the US generally involves greater expenses due to wages, regulatory compliance and infrastructure requirements.
\n
Jiao also pointed to "capacity constraints", noting that building and certifying new pharmaceutical facilities "is a multiyear undertaking that requires substantial capital and FDA(Food and Drug Administration) approval, creating a gap between tariff implementation and any significant increase in domestic output".
\n
"Higher operating costs and market volatility could lead manufacturers to divert resources away from research and development to meet short-term financial demands," he said.
\n
For Canada, he said the two countries "share integrated supply chains for finished medicines, as well as for materials, manufacturing processes and technical expertise".
\n
Trade flows
\n
Significant US tariff increases could "change cross-border trade flows, raise costs for Canadian buyers of US-sourced products, and influence manufacturing location decisions by multinational firms", Jiao said.
\n
While tariffs can encourage domestic manufacturing, they are "unlikely to deliver a robust or diversified manufacturing base" on their own, he added.
\n
"Many experts recommend pairing them with targeted subsidies, tax incentives, streamlined regulatory processes and long-term procurement contracts to make domestic production economically viable and sustainable, particularly for essential generic drugs.
\n
"A balanced strategy that combines these measures with broader supply chain diversification is generally viewed as more effective for improving resilience," he said.
\n
Paul Grootendorst, a professor of health services research at the University of Toronto, said the US plan to sharply raise tariffs on pharmaceuticals could drive up drug prices in both the US and Canada, while threatening Canadian exports and jobs.
\n
The Canadian pharmaceutical industry exported $5.34 billion of drugs to the US during 2024, he said.
\n
Grootendorst said he believes the short-term increase in costs from the tariffs would be passed on to consumers, meaning there would be no effect on Canada.
\n
"In the longer term, the US may increase domestic production of pharmaceuticals, especially if tariffs increase to 250 percent. This will result in less Canada production and likely some job losses," he said.
\n
Many of the drugs Canadians use are imported from the US, he said.
\n
"Tariffs will make US-produced drugs more expensive if they rely on imported ingredients that will be subject to tariffs. Thus, the price of US drug imports will likely increase."
\n
Canada might be able to find non-US suppliers for some generic drugs, he added, "but there might be no alternatives for other patented drugs".
\n
On the Canadian side, Grootendorst said the effect on patients would depend on their coverage.
\n
"Some plans require beneficiaries to pay 20 percent or some other percent of drug costs — beneficiaries of these plans will pay more," he said.
\n
"Most other plans have co-pays, but the co-pays don't depend on the drug cost, so no impact on patients — the plan will absorb the cost.
\n
"Of course, private plans are mostly provided by employers to employees. Ultimately, higher prices are paid for by employees," he said.
\n
Given the high level of pharmaceutical trade between the countries, he said "there would be some fallout from the tariffs".
\n
Grootendorst suggested that Canada should "help producers look for other export markets" and "encourage prescribers to switch from US-made to European or Japanese-made drugs if these drugs are reasonable substitutes".

South Africa is negotiating with the United States to scrap or reduce a 30 percent tariff imposed by Washington last week, while making progress in trade diversification, senior officials say.

Parks Tau, South Africa's minister of trade, industry and competition, said in a media briefing on Tuesday that they have been engaging with US counterparts since Friday after the tariffs took effect, to remove them or get a mutually beneficial trade deal.

They are negotiating with the US while seeking markets in other parts of the world, Tau said. "The Cabinet has approved that South Africa submit a revised offer as a basis for negotiations with the US."

The new offer builds on the previous offer submitted in May and "substantively responds to the issues the US has raised in the 2025 National Trade Estimate Report", he said.

"The government is going to do everything possible to keep the American market open for our goods. We will, at the same time, accelerate our efforts to diversify markets and build on the efforts we have put in place to ensure predictability in trade and leverage all our existing partnerships to secure markets for our products."

South Africa has already addressed sanitary and phytosanitary measures in compliance with the biosecurity protocols affecting poultry and pork, Tau said. Under the protocol, the US can leverage the Tariff Rate Quota of 72,000 metric tons agreed in 2016.

Meanwhile, he said his country will use the African Continental Free Trade Area to increase exports across Africa. South Africa will chair the Southern African Customs Union next month, where they will discuss the "unilateral trade tariffs" and decide on the mitigating measures as a region, he added.

"The diversification is a strategic imperative to ensure better resilience of our economy to economic shocks. This is not a plan B; it is a plan A for long-term resilience and competitiveness.

"We are looking at Asia — including Japan, Vietnam and Thailand — the Middle East, and India. We are pursuing these markets because we see growing demand, existing negotiations and a positive reception to South African products. This is not just about trade numbers; it is directly linked to job protection."

Also on Tuesday, South Africa's Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen said the country anticipates signing a deal with China next month to export plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots and prunes.

The minister recently accompanied Deputy President Paul Mashatile to visit China, meeting various industries to increase South Africa's footprint there.

"For the first time, we have been negotiating with China on five products, which are plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots and prunes," Steenhuisen said.

"We see some market growth potential there. China is one of the most populous countries, and if we get more consumers for our products, the better."

"Weak global direct investment has weighed on China's FDI, but a closer look shows resilience," said Fan Penghui, a senior researcher with the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, a think tank with the Ministry of Commerce. "A periodic slowdown after a peak is normal. Investment cycles ebb and flow."

In fact, China's high-tech industries and service sectors have seen continuous growth in foreign investment, which underscores that foreign capital is riding on the development wave of China's new quality productive forces, Fan said.

In 2024, high-tech industries attracted 34.6 percent of foreign investment, up 6 percentage points from 2020. The first half of 2025 accelerated this shift. High-tech sectors attracted 127.87 billion yuan ($17.8 billion) in foreign capital, with e-commerce services surging 127.1 percent, chemical pharmaceuticals up 53 percent, and aerospace equipment manufacturing rising 36.2 percent.

For many multinational corporations, China has evolved beyond a sales market into a hub for growth and innovation, prompting increased research and development investment to tap into the country's innovation potential.

According to Leng Yan, executive vice-president of Mercedes-Benz China, the company has poured over 10.5 billion yuan into Chinese R&D over five years, and with its Shanghai R&D center, the company's local innovation now "leads global development".

Holding steady
\n
China's success in attracting foreign investment is underpinned by a deliberate policy push to keep foreign investment steady, including opening more fields to foreign firms and creating a more welcoming environment.
\n
The negative list for foreign investment has been steadily shortened, with all manufacturing restrictions eliminated in 2024.Pilot programs are also opening up services like value-added telecom and biotechnology.
\n
To build trust and cut red tape, a roundtable consultation system for foreign businesses was established. Since 2023, the Ministry of Commerce has held over 30 meetings, resolving more than 1,500 operational issues raised by foreign firms.
\n
Plans are in motion to expand these efforts. A revised catalogue of industries encouraged for foreign investment is in the works. The updated list will guide more foreign capital toward advanced manufacturing, modern services, high-tech, energy conservation and environmental protection sectors, as well as into central, western and northeastern regions, according to the country's top economic regulator.

"As China continues to expand institutional opening-up, foreign investment is expected to integrate more deeply into domestic innovation and supply chains, striking a new balance with growing emphasis on quality," Fan said.

Fueled by a booming Sino-South Korean travel scene, the city's pristine golf courses and frequent flights have turned it into a golfer's paradise. Sheyang Island Golf Club now tops South Korean social-media rankings and is a prime destination for weekend golfers visiting China.

With a population of about 50 million, the ROK counts roughly 5 million golf enthusiasts, making the sport popular almost nationwide, Ryu says.

Since last April, Sheyang Island Golf Club has been partnering with a Chinese travel agency to roll out an all-inclusive package tour that includes round-trip flights and hotel accommodation. They are now promoting the Yancheng golf tours in the ROK market.

In November 2024, China implemented a 30-day visa-free entry policy for ROK citizens. Yancheng seized the opportunity, working to create a South Korean wave in inbound tourism.

Flights from Seoul to Yancheng operate every Tuesday and Saturday, taking just two hours. A day of golf in Yancheng costs about 400 yuan ($56) per person, including lunch. One night in a star-rated hotel in Sheyang county costs 200-300 yuan, and the round-trip airfare is about 3,000 yuan, Ryu says.

"All these costs add up to less than half of the golfing costs back in the ROK," he says. However, most people visit Yancheng only for playing golf, not for sightseeing, he says, which he finds regrettable.

Ryu plans to take matters into his own hands. "I have already got in touch with ROK travel agencies and am working to attract visitors. In addition to golf, I will arrange trips to Yancheng's scenic spots."

Ryu Ku-keun, president of Yancheng's South Korean chamber of commerce, quipped that in ROK, the three best-known Chinese destinations are Zhangjiajie (in Hunan province), Shanghai and Yancheng.

"Zhangjiajie is for sightseeing, Shanghai is for shopping, and Yancheng is where South Korean golfers come to swing," Ryu says.

Fueled by a booming Sino-South Korean travel scene, the city's pristine golf courses and frequent flights have turned it into a golfer's paradise. Sheyang Island Golf Club now tops South Korean social-media rankings and is a prime destination for weekend golfers visiting China.
\n
With a population of about 50 million, the ROK counts roughly 5 million golf enthusiasts, making the sport popular almost nationwide, Ryu says.
\n
Since last April, Sheyang Island Golf Club has been partnering with a Chinese travel agency to roll out an all-inclusive package tour that includes round-trip flights and hotel accommodation. They are now promoting the Yancheng golf tours in the ROK market.
\n
In November 2024, China implemented a 30-day visa-free entry policy for ROK citizens. Yancheng seized the opportunity, working to create a South Korean wave in inbound tourism.
\n
Flights from Seoul to Yancheng operate every Tuesday and Saturday, taking just two hours. A day of golf in Yancheng costs about 400 yuan ($56) per person, including lunch. One night in a star-rated hotel in Sheyang county costs 200-300 yuan, and the round-trip airfare is about 3,000 yuan, Ryu says.

"All these costs add up to less than half of the golfing costs back in the ROK," he says. However, most people visit Yancheng only for playing golf, not for sightseeing, he says, which he finds regrettable.
\n
Ryu plans to take matters into his own hands. "I have already got in touch with ROK travel agencies and am working to attract visitors. In addition to golf, I will arrange trips to Yancheng's scenic spots."
\n
Since a China-ROK industrial park opened in Yancheng in 2017, the city is now a barometer of bilateral cooperation in China's Yangtze River Delta.
\n
To date, some 1,000 ROK firms have set up shop in Yancheng, bringing in more than $13 billion dollars in investment. A standout project is SK On's battery mega-factory, which has been Jiangsu's largest foreign investment project in recent years.

More than 10,000 ROK nationals now live and work in Yancheng. For them, the city has been a home away from home, Ryu says.

The film Dongji Rescue, based on a true historical event, tells the story of Chinese fishermen braving turbulent seas to save strangers — a testament to the nation's capacity to create miracles in the face of adversity.

Eighty-three years ago, in 1942, the Japanese military seized the Lisbon Maru ship to transport 1,816 British prisoners of war from Hong Kong to Japan. Passing through the waters near Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, it was torpedoed by a US submarine. Fishermen from Zhoushan rescued 384 prisoners of war and hid them from Japanese search parties.
\n
Actor Zhu Yilong, in an exclusive interview with China Daily, said he was deeply moved by the humanity shown in such extreme conditions when he accepted his role. "This historical event proves that in dire circumstances, Chinese people can extend their goodness to protect both themselves and others," he said.
\n
Last Friday, a themed event for Dongji Rescue was held in Zhoushan, a city close to where the Lisbon Maru sank. Descendants of the British POWs and the rescuing fishermen gathered to watch the film and share their reflections.
\n
In the film, the British POWs are aided by a group of fishermen from Dongji Island, whose courage and compassion cut a path through treacherous waves. After the screening, many descendants were visibly moved.
\n
"I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Chinese people and the descendants of Chinese fishermen. When the film is released in the UK, I will bring my family and friends to watch it. Heroic acts like this deserve to be known worldwide," said Denise Wynne, a descendant of a British POW.

"I felt the profound friendship between the Chinese and British people through the film," said Li Hui, a descendant of a rescuer. Many audience members were brought to tears — some by the fishermen's bravery, others by the enduring spirit of "never abandoning those in peril".
\n
"In times of sea peril, rescue is a must," said Wu Buwei, another rescuer's descendant, noting that this value has long been a part of Dongji fishermen's traditions.

Coincidentally, on the morning of Aug 5, a real-life rescue unfolded on the shores of Dongfushan in Dongji town. Two tourists from Shanghai fell into the sea and were swept away by powerful waves. Without hesitation, two descendants of Dongji fishermen — Wang Yubin and Yang Xiaoping — leaped in to save them, braving a wind force of 9 to 10 before pulling them to safety.

"Our forebearers once rescued many British POWs here. As their descendants, we should carry forward their bravery," Wang said. Both rescuers later joined the film's cast and crew at the Zhoushan event, sharing the stage with actors who portrayed the fishermen in a symbolic "reunion across 83 years".

Chinese actor Wu Lei, who plays A Dang in the film, expressed his respect for the two rescuing fishermen on-site. In the film, A Dang saves a British POW named Thomas Newman. Though they share no common language, they manage to connect. In an interview with China Daily, Wu said, "They connected through a small globe. A Dang understood when Newman pointed out his home, the UK, on the globe."

The Jiangsu Football City League phenomenon has ignited a nationwide wave of popular grassroots soccer leagues this summer, and rekindled supporters' passion for the sport.

Dubbed the "Jiangsu Super League" or "Suchao", the amateur provincial league has been a sensation — both online and in stadiums — loved for its huge crowds, exciting play, lively fan exchanges and viral memes.
\n
Now soccer leagues in Jiangxi, Guangdong, and other provinces are also vying for the national spotlight by focusing on fierce inter-city rivalries, innovative formats, or rebranding existing competitions.
\n
During the fourth round of the 2025 Jiangxi City Football Super League on Aug 2-3, more than 70,000 spectators packed stadiums across Yingtan, Shangrao, and Xinyu, with stands echoing with the roars of proud supporters.

The marquee match on Aug 2, when Yingtan hosted Jiujiang, drew 19,108 spectators. Over 1,100 Jiujiang fans traveled on Jiangxi's first soccer-dedicated high-speed train scheduled for the game.

Despite the taunts, Jiangxi's city officials have not taken the bait. However, soccer teams in Jiangxi are carrying on Jiangsu's humorous tradition of ribbing each other.

After a match in Ganzhou, Pingxiang's official WeChat account published an open letter affectionately addressing Ganzhou as "Gan Gan", praising its navel oranges and recounting shared cultural and historical bonds.

Hours later, Ganzhou's account replied warmly to "Ping Ping", saying they were eagerly awaiting their next match in Pingxiang.

Netizens were moved by the cities' overly polite exchanges.

In a roughly 30-square-meter store, shelves are lined with bracelets carrying a gentle tea scent. These bracelets — each unique in its bead arrangement and showing signs of manual craftsmanship — bring hope to around 50 households with disabled people in Jingshan town in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.
\n
"Having experienced employment challenges myself as a disabled person, I opened this craft store to create job opportunities for others like me," said Zhang Ruixia, the store's manager, seated in her wheelchair.
\n
The 36-year-old added that the orange color that dominates the store's logo, packaging and interior design was chosen for its warmth and inclusivity.
\n
Semi-paralyzed after a surgical mishap in 2016, Zhang initially sank into despair but managed to pull herself together within just six months.
\n
She then attempted various jobs — including as a graphic designer at an advertising agency and a telephone customer service staffer at a wheelchair retailer — but found that "these jobs demanded prolonged sitting, which the body simply couldn't endure".
\n
When Xu Hui, a public welfare worker, reached out to Zhang last year, she had already opened a small craft store in her hometown of Henan province after teaching herself various weaving techniques and beadwork designs through online videos.
\n
"Xu and I talked about how society is becoming more inclusive to people with disability, yet families with disabled people still face significant employment barriers, including some people who are unable to leave their homes to work, and mothers of those with intellectual disabilities struggling to take on full-time jobs," Zhang said. "I deeply resonated with his sentiments, so when he mentioned the Jingshan town project, I was like, 'That's it. Let's do it together.'"
\n
Previously, support for people with disabilities mainly involved providing supplies and skills training, but they often remained unemployed in the end, Xu said.
\n
"Our preliminary research found that what companies care about most is not who makes the product, but its quality. People with disabilities often demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and cherish every job opportunity, making them well-suited for craftwork," Xu said.
\n
The project — primarily targeting large companies, with additional sales channels through e-commerce platforms and physical stores — aims to secure stable orders, enabling disabled individuals to work either from home or at the workshop, on a part-time or full-time basis, Xu said.
\n
Recognizing the feasibility and practicality of the project, the local government extended substantial support to expedite the store's opening. This involved streamlining the verification process for their volunteer group "Better and Better" and offering the physical store and the workshop at rents only covering water and electricity expenses, he added.
\n
"To distinguish the bracelets from others, we have creatively incorporated Jingshan tea into the bead-making process," Zhang said, adding that the tea, as one of Zhejiang's top 10 famous teas, is not only a local specialty but also a crucial cultural origin of the Japanese tea ceremony.
\n
After three months of trials, Zhang finally developed a composite crafting technique that builds on traditional incense bead-making methods, with aged Jingshan tea as the primary raw material. This process involves grinding the tea leaves into a powder finer than 120 mesh (about 0.125 millimeters), blending it with an optimized ratio of plant-based adhesives, mechanically kneading the mixture to achieve cohesion, and finally drying it in the shade for structural stabilization.
\n
The store opened in October, and businesses have offered the store partnership opportunities. In addition, around 50 disabled people have come forward to apply. They are able to take orders and be paid per piece after training.
\n
Bai Yunfeng, a man in his late 40s who is crippled by polio, exhibits surprising dexterity despite lacking prior experience in bracelet making. He is capable of completing a simple design in just a couple of minutes.
\n
"I used to work at a mechanical equipment assembly factory. However, this store has provided me with another fulfilling opportunity," Bai said. "Besides closer proximity to home and better pay, I feel like we are not objects of pity, but rather treated equally and valued for our capabilities here, which is very important to me."

Zhang said: "I hope to expand such stores nationwide, with tailored innovations for each place based on local specialties. I want to do my best to provide a shelter for those like me."

This summer, Basi Sammuel, a 15-year-old boy from the Solomon Islands, completed a journey that stretched across the Pacific Ocean — and straight into the operating room of the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University in Guiyang, Guizhou province.

There, he underwent lifesaving open-heart surgery that gave him not just a healed heart, but also a renewed future.
\n
Five months ago, Basi began experiencing persistent tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. After a detailed examination by the Chinese medical team sent to the Pacific island country, Basi was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect, and immediate surgery was recommended.
\n
But such a high-risk heart operation was beyond the capacity of local hospitals.
\n
Thanks to the coordination between Chinese medical teams in China and the Solomon Islands — and the dedication of doctors, nurses and volunteers along the way — Basi is now smiling, walking and breathing freely once again after undergoing a three-hour surgery in June.
\n
On the day of his discharge, Basi's father said that it was the Chinese government, the Chinese medical team in the Solomon Islands, and the hospital that gave his child a second chance.
\n
"We will never forget this kindness," he said.
\n
Basi's journey was more than a medical success. The transpacific rescue mission has become a living example of China's commitment to building a global community of health for all and also of the friendship between the peoples of China and Pacific island countries.

Healthcare is only one of the many areas in which China and Pacific island countries have agreed to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation. Over the past decades, China and the Pacific island countries have achieved remarkable results in terms of political mutual trust, economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, since Fiji became the first Pacific island country to establish diplomatic relations with China in 1975.

At the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held in May in Xiamen, Fujian province, Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that China will allocate $2 million for the further expansion of cooperation with island countries in areas such as clean energy, agriculture, fisheries, ocean, low-carbon infrastructure, low-carbon tourism, and disaster prevention and mitigation.

"The Pacific island region is one of the regions most severely affected by climate change. As an important partner of Pacific island countries, China is all along committed to helping and supporting the region in addressing climate change under the framework of South-South cooperation as much as its capabilities permit," Wang told the meeting's participants.

Tonga's Crown Prince and Minister for Foreign Affairs Tupouto'a'Ulukalala said he had a very good experience of visiting the China-Pacific Island Countries Climate Action Cooperation Center in Liaocheng, Shandong province, ahead of the foreign ministers' meeting.

Established in 2022, the center is China's first multilateral cooperation platform in the field of climate change.
\n
Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala said that addressing climate change is a priority for Pacific island countries and he knows that there have been Chinese scholars and professors who have gone to Tonga for cooperation in this field.
\n
"It's important to be on the ground to be familiar with the communities and know the challenges that they go through, so that we know what the vulnerabilities are and how they can become more resilient," he said.
\n
Besides the climate action cooperation center, another six platforms and frameworks have been established for China-Pacific island countries cooperation on reserves of emergency supplies, poverty alleviation and development, disaster prevention and mitigation, Juncao (mushroom and grass) technology, agriculture and police training.
\n
In Samoa, China has assisted in the construction of more than 20 infrastructure projects and implemented six phases of agricultural technology assistance projects, training over 10,000 farmers.
\n
In the Solomon Islands, the Chinese medical team has diagnosed and treated more than 30,000 patients, reaching out to nine provinces and cities to deliver medical services.
\n
In Papua New Guinea, Chinese experts in Juncao and dryland rice technologies have been working in the Eastern Highlands Province for over 20 years, teaching local people mushroom cultivation and livestock farming and promoting dryland rice cultivation.
\n
Officials and experts said that China's cooperation with Pacific island countries over the past years has shown full respect to those countries' own development aspirations and enabled the outcomes to benefit local people, thereby helping the island countries enhance their capacity for independent development.

Valuable support

Dalton Tagelagi, Niue's premier and foreign minister, said that for Niue, an undeveloped small island country, China's support has been very valuable for his country's modernization.

Zhao added that the list of measures China has prepared to implement the consensus of the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting is very detailed, as it covers a total of 12 areas urgently needed by the island countries, including free trade agreement negotiations, police and law enforcement cooperation, and scholarship and human resource training.
