A Jiangxi Air aircraft receives a water salute upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia on Aug 25.

\n

Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Nanchang, East China's Jiangxi province, are expected into inject fresh impetus to the tourism sectors of both sides, said experts and officials.

\n

The comments came after Nanchang recently launched direct flight services to Malaysia's capital since the mutual visa exemption between China and Malaysia took effect in July.

\n

The inaugural flight returned to Nanchang at around 9 pm on Aug 25, carrying some 200 Malaysian tourists.

\n

"It used to be quite troublesome to travel to Jiangxi. Now, with the direct flight, it's so convenient. This province has many beautiful cities — like Shangrao and Jingdezhen. The scenery we saw online is truly stunning, and we're excited to explore," said a Malaysian tourist surnamed Yang.

\n

Operated by Jiangxi Air, the new route will be operated with two flights per week, every Monday and Saturday.

\n

It is not only Jiangxi's first direct flight to Malaysia post-visa waiver, but also currently the only direct route from this inland province to Southeast Asia.

\n

On its inaugural day, the flight achieved a load factor of over 90 percent. Ding Chunling, general manager of the marketing and sales department at Jiangxi Air, said this reflects a deepening exchange between the people of China and Malaysia.

\n

"We began preparing for this international route a long time ago. During a business trip to Malaysia with the provincial Party secretary last year to promote investment and tourism, many local travel agencies expressed strong interest in establishing direct flights to us," Ding said.

\n

"When news spread about the launch of this route, travel agencies rushed to make advance bookings — some even reserved seats through March next year," Ding added.

\n

Dato' Mohd Izani Ghani, managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, described the new route as a key strategic move to enhance aviation cooperation between Malaysia and China.

\n

He said direct access to emerging inland markets in China would create more trade, investment and business opportunities for Malaysia.

\n

It will also solidify Kuala Lum-pur's position as a major aviation hub in Southeast Asia and open new avenues for tourism, economic and cultural exchanges, he added.

\n

The Nanchang-Kuala Lumpur route is Nanchang's third international direct flight, following Osaka and Singapore.

\n

The flight drastically shortens travel time between Southeast Asia and Jiangxi — from eight to nine hours with transfers down to just over four hours — and is expected to boost economic, trade and cultural tourism exchanges.

\n

Data indicate that the route is projected to bring over 15,000 tourists annually from Southeast Asia to Nanchang.

\n

The city has already seen significant growth in inbound tourism, with international visitor numbers rising by 20 percent year-on-year in the first half of the year.

\n

"Outbound travel from Jiangxi is accelerating. We resumed flights to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in August and will launch flights to Macao in September," said Xie Tao, chief of the second inspection section of Changbei Airport Customs.

\n

In addition to Jiangxi, other places in China — including Qingdao in Shandong province and Haikou in Hainan province — have also launched direct flights to Kuala Lumpur since the mutual visa exemption took effect on July 17.

\n

Last year, several cities, such as Wuhan in Hubei province, Nanjing in Jiangsu, Kunming in Yunnan, and Yantai in Shandong, also introduced direct flights to Kuala Lumpur.

President Xi Jinping stands for a group photo with other leaders and representatives attending the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Tianjin on Monday. Xi chaired the meeting and delivered a speech titled "Staying True to SCO Founding Mission and Ushering in a Better Future".

\n

President Xi Jinping emphasized on Monday the importance of staying true to the Shanghai Spirit that has guided the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to grow into the world's largest regional organization, and he urged greater resolve and more practical measures to promote the SCO's sustainable development.

\n

Xi made the remarks when addressing the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, which was attended by leaders of member countries and heads of the organization's permanent bodies in the port city of Tianjin in northern China.

\n

Noting that the SCO now boasts the participation of 26 countries, cooperation covering more than 50 areas, and a combined economic output of nearly $30 trillion, Xi said that the organization's international influence and appeal are increasing day by day.

\n

"Looking ahead, we should carry forward the Shanghai Spirit in a world fraught with challenges and changes, forge ahead with solid steps, and better tap into the potential of our organization," he said.

\n

The Shanghai Spirit is a set of principles — centered on mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diversity of civilizations and pursuit of common development — that the SCO has adhered to since its founding in Shanghai in 2001.

\n

Over the past 24 years, the organization has expanded from six founding members to a 26-nation family spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.

\n

Xi stressed that member states of the SCO, who are all friends and partners, should seek common ground while putting aside differences.

\n

"Shared aspirations are the source of strength and advantage, and the will to seek commonality while shelving differences reflects vision and wisdom," Xi said, encouraging all parties to make the pie of cooperation bigger and fully utilize the endowment of every country.

\n

To pursue mutual benefit and win-win results, he called on the SCO countries to better align their development strategies, leverage the strengths of their mega-sized markets and economic complementarity among them, and enhance cooperation across various areas including energy, infrastructure and green industry.

\n

Highlighting the need to enhance mutual understanding and friendship through people-to-people exchanges, he said SCO member countries should jointly cultivate a garden of civilizations in which all cultures flourish in prosperity and harmony through mutual enlightenment.

\n

To uphold fairness and justice, Xi called on the SCO to promote a correct historical perspective on World War II, and oppose the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation and bullying practices.

\n

"We should advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and make the global governance system more just and equitable," he said.

\n

Xi also called for continuous SCO reform to improve its institutional structure and make its decision-making more scientific and its actions more efficient.

\n

He said that the newly established SCO Universal Center for Countering Security Challenges and Threats and the SCO Anti-Drug Center should be put into use, and an SCO development bank should be set up as soon as possible, to provide stronger underpinnings for security and economic cooperation among member states.

\n

Xi stressed that China always aligns its development with that of the SCO and with the aspirations of the people of member states for a better life.

\n

To date, China's investment stock in other SCO member states has exceeded $84 billion, and its annual bilateral trade with other SCO member states has surpassed $500 billion.

\n

"China's cumulative trade with other SCO countries has surpassed $2.3 trillion, hitting ahead of schedule the target that I had set," he said.

\n

In the latest move of taking real actions to ensure better development of the SCO, Xi announced that China will implement 100"small and beautiful" livelihood projects in member states that need them, provide 2 billion yuan ($280 million) in grants to SCO member states within this year, and issue an additional 10 billion yuan in loans to the member banks of the SCO Interbank Consortium over the next three years.

\n

Starting next year, China will double the current number of SCO-specific scholarships and launch an SCO innovative PhD program to jointly train high-caliber talent in academic as well as scientific and technological research, he added.

\n

Furthermore, Xi said that China will establish 10 vocational education Luban Workshops in SCO member states and provide 10,000 human resources training opportunities in the next five years.

\n

So far, China has established 10 Luban Workshops in SCO countries, cultivating the technical and skilled personnel needed for the economic and social development of partner countries.

\n

Participants said at the meeting that jointly building the Belt and Road with China has enabled all countries to share China's new development opportunities, and the three major global initiatives proposed by China have brought certainty and stability to a turbulent world.

\n

They pledged to continue practicing the Shanghai Spirit, build consensus, and strengthen cooperation in political, security, economic, trade, scientific, technological and cultural fields.

\n

They also agreed to coordinate efforts to tackle both traditional and nontraditional security threats, resolutely combat the "three evil forces "of terrorism, extremism and separatism, and promote higher-quality development of the SCO through deeper cooperation.

\n

The participants also stressed that, in the face of a complex and volatile international situation, SCO member states should enhance strategic coordination, safeguard the victorious outcomes of WWII, and oppose unilateralism, hegemonism, and protectionism, among others.

\n

During the summit, leaders of the SCO member states signed and issued the Tianjin Declaration, accepted Laos as a dialogue partner, and adopted 24 outcome documents on strengthening cooperation in sectors such as security, economy, cultural exchanges and organizational building.

\n

They also approved a development strategy for the organization in the 2026-35 period and issued a statement on the 80th anniversary of the victory in WWII and of the founding of the United Nations.

\n

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the meeting that the SCO has brought together like-minded partners committed to shaping a just, multipolar world order.

\n

Among the outcome documents, he said that the Tianjin Declaration reflects the agreed-upon approaches of member states to pressing issues on the global and regional agenda.

\n

In his speech, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that mutual understanding and solidarity among SCO member states are the key to preserving peace in the region at a time when the foundation of global security and stability is being undermined by factors such as the escalation of conflicts and the fragmentation of the global trading system.

\n

"We believe that the SCO's voice should be even more compelling and resolute, reflecting our common political will and serving as a call for decisive action in the name of a peaceful future and sustainable progress," he said.

\n

The summit in Tianjin was the largest in SCO history.

\n

Li Yonghui, a research fellow of Russian studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that more and more countries are joining the SCO family now.

\n

"Countries joined the organization in pursuit of development, but their interests and priorities are not identical. Therefore, it is necessary for them to respect the differences, maintain strategic communication, build up consensus and strengthen solidarity and collaboration, in order to promote a bigger role for the organization in the global arena," she said.

At this year's Toronto Trade Show, Wan Bing said the growing popularity of Chinese baijiu reflected how far the liquor has come in the Canadian market.

\n

"Back in 2010, there was almost no Chinese baijiu in Canada," Wan, who has been in the business for a long time, told China Daily. "Now, nearly 90 percent of famous Chinese brands are here."

\n

Baijiu refers to liquor distilled from fermented sorghum.

\n

The 2025 Toronto Trade Show and China-Canada Business Expansion Expo was held over the weekend in Markham, Ontario, bringing together more than 80 exhibitors from China and Canada.

\n

Organizers said the event is one of the largest trade fairs in the Greater Toronto Area this year, featuring sectors from logistics and e-commerce to food, health products and cultural tourism.

\n

When Wan moved from China to Canada 15 years ago, he brought with him not only a business plan but also a passion for promoting baijiu.

\n

After years in the liquor industry in Sichuan province, he founded a company in 2010 to introduce baijiu to the Canadian market and later established the Chinese Liquor Culture Canada Association.

\n

He added that baijiu sales through the Liquor Control Board of Ontario rose about 25 percent in the first three quarters of this year.

\n

"Before, Chinese baijiu was hidden in the corner of the store," Wan said. "Now it's placed in the most visible spot. That shows recognition." He said he believes greater awareness of baijiu's cultural heritage will attract even more attention.

\n

Advanced technology

\n

For other exhibitors, the trade show was an opportunity to introduce advanced technology and unique products to Canadian buyers.

\n

Zhou Yaohua, representing a smart warehousing solutions provider from Qingdao, Shandong province, said his team designs and installs customized storage systems.

\n

"The technology is already widely used in China, and the market there is becoming saturated," he told China Daily. "But in Canada, traditional warehousing is outdated. Bringing our technology here has real advantages."

\n

Yao Mengming displayed local specialties, including coffee, tea and nuts from Yunnan province. She said her company aimed to showcase the distinctive flavors of her province.

\n

"We hope to promote Yunnan's specialty products," Yao said. "These are products with growing potential, and we want to introduce them to international markets."

\n

Sustainability was another theme. Wang Yubin, general manager of a green enterprise from Qufu, Shandong, specializing in the development and production of fully biodegradable materials and products, presented packaging designed to replace conventional plastics.

\n

"Our material degrades in 180 days into carbon dioxide and water," Wang told China Daily.

\n

Lena Xu, president of the Canada-China Enterprise Overseas Service Center and the event's organizer, said the inaugural show brought together around 60 Chinese exhibitors showcasing technology, consumer products and industrial solutions.

\n

"The content this time is very rich and full, and it can provide resources for Canadian buyers," she said.

\n

Looking ahead, Xu pointed to opportunities in multiple industries.

\n

"China is a major exporter in manufacturing and the light industry," she said. "Food, light industry, pet products, high technology — all of these can be developed in North America if there is demand."

\n

Among the Canadian participants was Matteo Merla, an entrepreneur based in Hamilton, Ontario. His business involves importing trees from Germany and planting them in Canada for lumber production.

\n

"I started two years ago with the trees, importing them from Germany to Canada," he told China Daily.

\n

His goal in participating in the expo was to expand his network and attract investment.
