|

"description": "

The signs of a bull run are slowly but steadily emerging in China's A-share market, underpinned by ongoing structural reforms and sustained long-term capital inflows. Experts said the developing rally is expected to gain further traction on the back of policy support and a gradually improving external environment.
\n
Their remarks came on Wednesday as the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose for an eighth straight session, climbing 0.48 percent to close at 3,683.46 — its highest level since December 2021.
\n
The Shenzhen Component Index gained 1.76 percent, while the tech-heavy ChiNext surged 3.62 percent. The total turnover on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges topped 2.1 trillion yuan ($292.69 billion) — a 13.5 percent increase from the previous day.
\n
Investor enthusiasm is surging on both the institutional and retail fronts. July witnessed a record monthly number of new mutual fund launches, reflecting rising interest among households in equity assets as returns from traditional savings and wealth management products continue to decline. Total assets under management in public mutual funds have now exceeded 34 trillion yuan.
\n
Insurance companies are also ramping up their presence in the A-share market. The number of public disclosures triggered by insurers' equity holdings surpassing the 5 percent threshold has already exceeded last year's total. Analysts said insurers are increasingly focusing on companies from the emerging industries and advanced manufacturing sectors, supporting China's shift toward high-quality development.
\n
Yang Delong, chief economist at First Seafront Fund, said that insurance companies have played an increasingly stabilizing role in the A-share market by boosting their equity allocations. He noted that insurers have recently focused more of their research on companies engaged in new quality productive forces, a move that supports China's broader push to upgrade its real economy and enhance long-term investment value.
\n
Retail investor participation is also rising. Nearly 14.6 million individual trading accounts were opened in the first seven months of 2025, a 37 percent year-on-year increase, according to data provider Wind Info.
\n
Furthermore, foreign investors have been steadily increasing their exposure to Chinese equities, including A-shares and Hong Kong-listed stocks. Net foreign inflows totaled $2.7 billion in July, more than double the level in June, according to a recent report by Morgan Stanley.
\n
Analysts said the macro environment is becoming increasingly favorable for Chinese equities. Expectations of a weaker US dollar and potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve are improving the outlook for emerging markets. The narrowing interest rate differential between China and the United States could further accelerate foreign capital inflows.
\n
Hong Hao, chief investment officer at Lotus Asset Management, said the upward momentum of Chinese stocks will sustain for a long time if the US dollar's weakness proves to be a multiyear trend. Also, the Chinese market has been increasingly resilient in the face of negative tariff headlines.
\n
Given the current favorable liquidity conditions in the Chinese market and the fear-of-missing-out sentiment, any corrections in the A-share market are likely to be quickly absorbed by buyers, he added.
\n
Zhu Liang, chief investment officer at AllianceBernstein China, said that despite strong gains in recent weeks — with the Shanghai Composite Index up nearly 7 percent and the Shenzhen Component Index up more than 10 percent since July — valuations in the A-share market remain attractive.
\n
Sounding a word of caution, some experts said that risk appetite in the A-share market may be suppressed by factors such as changes in tariff talks between China and the US, as well as domestic challenges facing the Chinese economy.
\n
He Kang, chief strategy analyst at Huatai Securities, said that there are still challenges regarding China's economic recovery, as efforts by policymakers to create a fairer competition environment may take time to show effect, and this may affect the profitability outlook of A-share companies.
\n
shijing@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "004CHINA - Mainland braces for Podul's 2nd landfall",
|
||||
"description": "

As Typhoon Podul is poised to make its second landfall along the coastal areas between Guangdong and Fujian provinces, transportation — particularly train services in the two provinces — was significantly affected on Wednesday.
\n
Podul, the 11th typhoon of the year and classified as a severe storm, made its initial landfall along the coast of Taitung, Taiwan, at around 1 pm on Wednesday, with maximum wind speeds near the center reaching 151.2 kilometers per hour, according to the National Meteorological Center.
\n
After entering the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday afternoon, the typhoon was expected to make a second landfall along the coast between Xiamen in Fujian and Shantou in Guangdong, between Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning, the NMC reported.
\n
In response to the severe weather, China Railway Guangzhou Group has assessed risks and adjusted transportation schedules on several routes. As of Wednesday, high-speed train services were suspended on routes connecting Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces, with train services on the affected railway lines expected to resume after Thursday, depending on weather conditions. Additionally, some trains on the Beijing-Guangzhou and Beijing-Kowloon (Hong Kong) railway lines were suspended on Wednesday.
\n
In Shantou, the Nan'ao Bridge, a major cross-sea project, was closed to traffic at 8 pm on Wednesday for safety reasons. Strong winds were detected at the bridge's automatic weather observation station on Wednesday morning, with their intensity increasing throughout the day, according to local meteorological authorities.
\n
In Chaozhou, which neighbors Shantou, all primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, day care centers and training institutions suspended classes on Wednesday.
\n
On the maritime front, all fishing boats in areas east of Shanwei, a seaside city in Guangdong, were required to return to port by 8 pm on Tuesday, and recreational boats were prohibited from going out to sea, according to the provincial headquarters for flood, drought and wind control.
\n
In Fujian, some passenger trains bound for Shaanxi province and Chongqing were suspended on Wednesday.
\n
In response to the impact of the typhoon and severe convective weather, the railway group upgraded the typhoon warning level for several lines running through Fujian from Level IV to Level III on Wednesday.
\n
With wind speeds of 90 to 118.8 km/h after its second landfall, Podul is expected to continue moving northwest into inland areas, passing through several provincial-level regions including Guangdong, Hunan, Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, bringing widespread heavy to torrential rain, according to the NMC.
\n
Due to Podul's asymmetrical structure with stronger convection on its southern side, southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong are expected to experience particularly significant heavy rainfall, according to NMC.
\n
Lyu Xinyan, chief forecaster at the NMC, highlighted the potential for compounding effects due to recent frequent rainfall in southern China.
\n
"We should pay particular attention to the cumulative effects of Podul's heavy rainfall and previous rainstorms, which could easily trigger mountain torrents, mudslides, flash floods in small and medium-sized rivers, and urban and rural flooding," she said.
\n
Contact the writer at qiuquanlin@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"title": "005CHINA - DPP slammed for selling out Taiwan",
|

"description": "

A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday criticized the Lai Ching-te administration in Taiwan for prioritizing political self-interest over public welfare, following recent polls showing Lai's approval ratings were the lowest they've been since he took office last year.
\n
The surveys, including one from Formosa Publishing and other "pro-independence" institutions in Taiwan, indicated a significant drop in satisfaction with Lai's performance, with dissatisfaction and distrust both exceeding 50 percent.
\n
This decline in approval comes as Taiwan society expresses dissatisfaction over the United States' recent announcement of a 20 percent tariff on most of Taiwan's exports. This rate is higher than the 15 percent export tariff imposed on Japan and South Korea, which are major competitors to Taiwan, posing a substantial challenge for Taiwan businesses.
\n
In response, the Lai administration of the island stated that the tariff rates are still negotiable and mentioned the possibility of increasing investments in the US by an additional $400 billion, sparking criticism in Taiwan.
\n
At the same time, the US reportedly planned to impose a 100 per-cent tariff on semiconductor imports while announcing that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the island's pillar industry, will invest $300 billion in the US to build the world's largest wafer factory in Arizona.
\n
Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, accused the Democratic Progressive Party-led administration of having "no bottom line" in selling out Taiwan and being obedient in its response to US demands. She noted that the proposed $400 billion investment equates to half of Taiwan's annual GDP.
\n
Zhu said that the DPP's willingness to hand over TSMC and allow the US to extract value from Taiwan's advantageous industries demonstrated a lack of commitment and capability to safeguard Taiwan's economic development and the welfare of its people.
\n
She said that Taiwan could have mitigated rising external risks and uncertainties by strengthening economic cooperation with the mainland. Instead, she accused the DPP of harboring a misguided desire for "independence" through reliance on external forces, ultimately harming Taiwan's development interests.
\n
Meanwhile, Hsiao Hsu-tsen, executive director of the Taiwan-based Ma Ying-jeou Culture and Education Foundation, criticized the Lai administration for its inadequate response to the southern Taiwan floods last month, noting that many residents remain without proper resettlement, leading to widespread public discontent.
\n
Hsiao accused the ineffective Lai administration of focusing on political ideology to divide the island facing the severe impact of the tariff increase on Taiwan's industries and people's livelihoods.
\n
"This kind of government is an 'internal hostile force' for the Taiwan people, and people should reject the DPP and Lai," he said.
\n
Zou Zhiqiang, deputy secretary-general of the US-based Alliance for China's Peaceful Reunification, said the recent rejection of Lai's planned "transit" through New York by the US indicated the country was unwilling to damage Sino-US relations over Taiwan, disproving the DPP's claim of a "rock-solid" relationship with the US.
\n
Zou said that Taiwan is not a core interest for the US and is seen merely as a pawn that could be discarded at any moment.
\n
zhangyi1@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"description": "

Herdsmen handle a flock of sheep in Ngari prefecture, Xizang autonomous region, on July 20. Centuries ago, local people used sheep and oxen to transport natural salt to distant places such as Nepal to exchange for local goods, creating the renowned "salt sheep ancient trail".
\n
Ngari prefecture in the Xizang autonomous region has made significant strides in infrastructure, education and living standards over the past decade, local officials announced on Wednesday.
\n
According to official figures, the prefecture's GDP reached 10.58 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) in 2024, which is 3.9 times the level of 2012, with an average annual growth rate of 8.6 percent. The per capita disposable income of urban residents rose to 58,900 yuan, 2.6 times that of 2012, while rural incomes increased to 20,256 yuan, a 3.7-fold rise over the same period.
\n
Zheng Yong, a senior official of the prefectural government, emphasized that Ngari has consistently prioritized development as the foundation and key to solving all problems by expanding effective investment. Since 2012, over 156 billion yuan has been invested in 2,388 major projects, including new roads, an airport in Burang county and preparatory work for the Xizang-Xinjiang railway.
\n
A "three-horizontal and three-vertical" road network, with a total mileage of 22,000 kilometers, now connects the remote region, providing every county with road access and improving links to townships and villages, Zheng noted.
\n
Residents have observed dramatic changes. Chosang, from Shide village in Burang, recalls when a road trip to Lhasa, Xizang's capital, took almost a week in a jolting truck.
\n
"Now the airport is right on our doorstep, it takes just three or four hours," he said. "It's hard to believe how quickly these obstacles have been turned into smooth, accessible roads."
\n
In addition, industrial projects featuring local livestock breeds such as white cashmere goats, high-altitude yaks and semi-fine-wool sheep have been expanded in Ngari, while the digital economy grew to 990 million yuan in 2024, according to Zheng.
\n
In 2024, the transfer payments for key ecological function zones reached 450 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 113 percent, Zheng added. Environmental protection projects have targeted desert control, river-source conservation and biodiversity. The habitat of the golden wild yak has been enlarged by more than 8,000 hectares, with the population now above 300, while Tibetan antelopes number over 139,000.
\n
Niu Qun, deputy director of the prefecture's development and reform commission, highlighted significant developments in Ngari's education sector, which has established a 15-year publicly funded education system that covers preschool to high school.
\n
"During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, more than 1.56 billion yuan has been spent on 169 infrastructure projects in the education sector, and 603 million yuan was allocated for the sanbao policy, which covers children's school meals, lodging, tuition and nutrition improvement funds, benefiting 77,400 students," Niu said.
\n
Chosang remembers when paying a few hundred yuan in school fees was a heavy burden.
\n
"In the past, only one or two children in a family could go to school. Now, not a single child is left behind; parents will send all their children to study and learn skills," he said.
\n
Border trade has been revitalized, with Burang Port upgraded and three trade points with Nepal reopened. The prefecture has also received long-term assistance from other provinces and State-owned enterprises, totaling 6.37 billion yuan over three decades, according to local authorities.
\n
Contact the writers at palden_nyima@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

However, this increase is fragile and can be easily undermined by extreme events tied to global warming and human activities.
\n
"The total carbon sink of the ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau now accounts for around 15 percent of the nation's," said Wang Tao, corresponding author of the study published in academic journal Nature Communications. Wang, a researcher at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized the significance of understanding the plateau's carbon storage potential to support China's dual carbon goals — peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.
\n
The study revealed that the soil carbon pool on the plateau constitutes over 90 percent of its total ecosystem carbon pool, serving as the cornerstone that supports the plateau's ecological security barrier function.
\n
The research team conducted a systematic grid-based soil sampling campaign across the plateau, using multi-source observational data, including 4,170 soil profiles and long-term controlled incubation experiments, to develop an observation-constrained soil carbon cycle model. This model projects climate change impacts on the plateau's soil carbon stocks.
\n
"Previous studies often relied on field infrared warming experiments to simulate the impacts of climate warming on changes in soil carbon stocks, but these approaches have inherent limitations," Wang said.
\n
He noted that such experiments are costly and typically control only temperature as a single variable, neglecting interactions among multiple climate factors. In addition, regional sensitivity to warming varies significantly across the plateau, resulting in high uncertainty when extrapolating results to broader scales, Wang said.
\n
To address the challenges, the study analyzed 0-to-1-meter depth soil samples which were extracted from 2019 to 2022 — a layer storing over half of the plateau's total soil carbon — from diverse regions. By integrating experimental data into the model, the team revealed the plateau-wide response mechanism of soil carbon stocks to warming.
\n
The study found that as the climate gets warmer and wetter, it is expected to positively influence vegetation growth and enhance soil carbon accumulation. However, more than half the newly accumulated carbon will be in active or non-protected forms, making it highly sensitive to extreme global-warming events and grazing disturbances.
\n
"The permafrost regions of the plateau constitute one of its largest terrestrial carbon pools. However, accelerating permafrost thaw under climate change can trigger abrupt thermokarst collapse, rapidly releasing previously sequestered carbon. This vulnerability is particularly prominent in soils with non-protected forms," Wang said, warning that such releases could offset over half the carbon gains from climate mitigation efforts.
\n
The study also synthesized 296 field grazing experiments from across the plateau, finding that if previous overgrazing management practices continue, grazing-induced carbon losses will almost entirely offset climate-driven carbon gains. Wang stressed the importance of effective grazing management, suggesting rotational grazing systems or restoring traditional nomadic practices to enable grassland regeneration.
\n
limenghan@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"description": "

Members of a local troupe perform Tibetan Opera at a park in Namling county, Xizang autonomous region, on July 17.
\n
LHASA — As the drums rolled, performers wearing blue masks took to the stage, enthralling the audience with powerful vocals and bold dance moves.
\n
This vibrant scene unfolded at a park in Namling county, Southwest China's Xizang autonomous region, where classic Tibetan Opera performances drew large crowds of locals.
\n
Young actress Drolma Yangkyi delivered a great performance as a kind and brave man in a show, which was met with passionate applause from the audience.
\n
"My father performed this role before me, so I kept seeking his advice right until the curtain call," said the 17-year-old. Influenced by her father and grandfather, both Tibetan Opera performers, Drolma Yangkyi started learning the traditional art at the age of 6.
\n
Considered a living fossil of Tibetan culture, Tibetan Opera blends talking, singing, acting, dancing and literature. It was included in the first batch of China's national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006 and the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
\n
With the government's support and the dedication of both young and old Tibetan Opera enthusiasts, along with the efforts of ICH inheritors, this traditional art form is gaining new momentum on the plateau.
\n
Namling is renowned for its Tibetan Opera school, which features blue masks and boasts a history spanning over 600 years. During the performances at the park, 76-year-old Tsering Dorje, a national-level inheritor of the art, was busy adjusting costumes for the young performers preparing to take the stage.
\n
Tsering Dorje grew up watching Tibetan Opera with his elders. The entertainment later became his passion, driving him to act for over 40 years.
\n
He recalled that in the early days, performers faced a lack of funding and opportunities to showcase their skills, and they had limited access to costumes and props.
\n
"Now, with the government and our troupe's efforts, we perform at big events and festivals like the Shoton Festival in the regional capital Lhasa and the Qomolangma Culture Festival in the city of Shigatse," said Tsering Dorje, adding that better conditions gave him the confidence to attract more young apprentices.
\n
He has trained multiple young Tibetan Opera performers, five of whom now lead their own apprentices. After transitioning from the stage to being an adviser, he now focuses on passing down the cultural essence of this ancient art.
\n
In recent years, Namling has set up a children's troupe with an average age of nine. By offering Tibetan Opera experience courses and various activities, the art form has been brought into campuses and rural areas. So far, the average age of Tibetan Opera inheritors has dropped to under 35, alleviating the aging issue of the performance crew.
\n
A white paper issued in March this year said that Xizang has named 153 part-time Tibetan Opera troupes.
\n
The protection of intangible cultural heritage in Xizang has steadily improved, with 473 million yuan ($66 million) from the central and regional governments earmarked from 2012 to 2024 for the protection of ICH items on the national representative list and other related fields, according to the white paper.
\n
Palden Wangchug, head of Xizang's regional Tibetan Opera troupe, said audience demand provides enduring momentum for the art form's preservation. "Where there's a market and spectators, Tibetan Opera thrives," he said.
\n
Drolma Yangkyi has been a member of the county's Tibetan Opera troupe since junior high school, accumulating rich stage experience, which includes performing in Lhasa. Now, she aspires to find a larger platform to showcase her talent.
\n
"I hope to further my Tibetan opera studies and someday showcase our culture beyond the plateau," she said.
\n

",

However, the additional time has not been spent improving the content to align with facts, but instead on reducing it to about one-third the length of last year's reports.
\n
The tremendous amount of reediting work that has been done is to ensure that the reports conform with the US administration's policies, even though the State Department has described it as an effort to make the reports more "streamlined", "more readable" and adhering more closely to what's required to be in them by law.
\n
For instance, the agency removed whole categories of violations not "explicitly required by statute", including gender-based violence and environmental justice. The deleted material includes issues widely regarded as fundamental rights under international law, such as the right to a fair public trial, as National Public Radio observed in a report.
\n
According to a State Department memo the US media obtained about the editing of the reports, editors were ordered to remove references to diversity, equity, and inclusion, sexual violence against children and violation of privacy.
\n
Even though the US administration insists it remains committed to defending human rights, the "minimalist rewrite", as some US lawmakers put it, fundamentally serves the US' domestic politics, and might not comply with domestic law, which requires a "full and complete" accounting of internationally recognized human rights.
\n
The United States has compiled these reports on every country in the world since the 1970s. The reports, which are invariably patchwork based on carefully selected "reported facts", constitute grave interference in other countries' internal affairs, and the practice is widely criticized by the international community.
\n
That Congress still relies on these assessments to shape decisions on foreign aid and weapons sales clearly demonstrates the reports' politicized nature. Human rights protection is only an excuse for the US to justify its interventionist foreign policies as well as weaponized sanctions that have no legitimate basis in international law.
\n
The irony is that human rights are essentially a privilege enjoyed only by a few in the US. Racial discrimination, inequality, and forced repatriations and deportations are just the tip of the iceberg.
\n
In February, the US president signed an executive order pulling the country out of the United Nations Human Rights Council again, unwarrantedly citing "political bias", particularly against Israel, and the agency's alleged "failure" to adequately address human rights abuses globally as due cause.
\n
But the reality is it is the US that applies "political bias" on human rights issues, and it is the US that is actually, overtly or covertly, behind many human rights abuses and humanitarian crises around the world, such as the one unfolding in Gaza.
\n
The US baselessly criticizes China over so-called human rights issues related to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in the reports. If the US administration truly cares about the human rights of Muslims, why does it turn a blind eye to the hell on earth in Gaza? Why does it turn a blind eye to the historical injustices suffered by the Palestinian people? These are questions the Chinese ambassador to the UN raised recently at a UN gathering, toward which his US counterpart was as mute as a fish.
\n
The US withdrew from the United Nations human rights body in 2018 — on similar grounds, in disregard of the fact that its cutting off funding to the agency will seriously affect many of its critical humanitarian aid projects in the least developed countries.
\n
No wonder the extent to which the US government can manipulate the concept of "human rights" to suit its own policy changes has even made many ardent supporters of the US' weaponization of human rights dumbstruck. Many so-called bedrock principles of human rights, such as those related to gender, the environment, race and judicial justice, that have been taken for granted by generations of human rights advocates as the foundation of the US beacon, have bitten the dust.
\n
As such, the reports are naturally devoid of credibility. "description": "

Editor's Note: China has the largest port infrastructure in the world. Su Fengming, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research, spoke to People's Daily Overseas Edition about the measures needed to meet evolving trade and logistics demands. Below are excerpts from the interview. The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.
\n
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, China's ports registered impressive growth, with throughput hitting record highs and handling capacity further enhanced. Service levels also steadily improved with an increase in the number of large-scale and specialized berths. In 2024, the number of operational berths reached 22,219, of which 2,971 berths had a capacity of 10,000 tons or more, a 14.62 percent increase compared with 2020. The construction of port cluster systems has also begun to show results.
\n
The smart and green transformation of China's ports is in the fast lane. Technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, the internet of things and cloud computing are being used for remote port control, unmanned container truck scheduling, dynamic yard optimization and berth plan optimization. These measures have helped to significantly improve operational efficiency. China ranks first in the world in both the existing and under-construction scale of automated container and dry bulk terminals, while the creation of a number of near zero carbon ports is being expedited.
\n
China's integration and optimization of port resources is also deepening, and multimodal transport is rapidly expanding. Currently, 10 coastal provinces and seven provinces along the Yangtze River have established provincial-level port groups and commenced integrated port operations.
\n
China has also formed world-class port clusters that span provincial-level administrative regions and have been elevated to national-level regional coordinated development. These include the Bohai Rim, the Yangtze River Delta and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
\n
In the next stage, China's ports will need to play a key role in the country's development. Given the complex and changing international landscape, they must enhance their functions, widen their coverage and diversify their supply chain services to meet the country's complex production, trade and logistics needs.
\n
First, efforts should be made to strengthen resource integration and leverage cluster effects. Inland ports should strengthen their strategic cooperation with seaports, link domestic and foreign trade routes and make transit logistics more efficient.
\n
Second, the government needs to build water-land interchange hubs to optimize the logistics networks. It must vigorously develop multimodal transport, connect water and land transport systems, develop warehousing and other supporting logistics facilities and expand the two-way service capacity. Ports should become logistics hubs that connect various related entities.
\n
Third, it is necessary to develop hub economies and promote the deep integration of ports, industries and cities. Modern ports should have comprehensive service platforms that link all related industries and provide services in trade, finance, insurance and production. This would enhance the ability of ports to control supply chains, pool resources from industries and towns, and promote mutual prosperity.
\n
Fourth, the authorities should adapt to changes in international trade flows and shifts in the industry and supply chains, strengthen linkages between domestic and overseas ports, support the construction of route networks centered on Chinese ports, and further open up land-sea transport channels.
\n

",

"description": "

\n
The US' trade policy is based on a big mistake: the idea that trade deficits are a national "loss" or "burden", and trade is a zero-sum game. This point of view contradicts the postwar consensus among economists that lowering trade barriers is a win-win policy that benefits every country. The main mistake that has led to this policy is the idea that exporting countries pay the extra tariffs, which allowed the US administration to portray a tax increase at home as a punishment for foreign competitors.
\n
However, the truth is that tariffs are taxes or levies which importers pay, and the cost is mostly passed on to the businesses and consumers in the importing country.
\n
Although this adversarial trade stance has hurt the US economy, it has also had an unintended effect. The US administration has unintentionally provided the strongest reason in a generation for the revitalization of multilateralism and the World Trade Organization by highlighting the chaos that would ensue in a world without rules.
\n
The administration's attack can be divided into two parts: it broke WTO rules by imposing tariffs on imports without going through the WTO, and it eliminated the WTO's enforcement mechanism. The trade war began in 2018 with Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, which were implemented to purportedly safeguard national security (a wild card used by the US administration). The situation worsened with the imposition of Section 301 tariffs on Chinese goods. This strategy gained strength when the administration proposed a 10 percent baseline tariff on nearly all imports, using emergency powers to disregard WTO rules.
\n
The most serious attack on the global trade system occurred when the US rendered the WTO's Appellate Body inoperable. The Appellate Body was the "crown jewel" of the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism (DSM). It was a revolutionary, rules-based way to settle disputes between WTO member states, but it was forcibly replaced with a system where any country could block any DSM decision. Starting in 2016, the US has systematically blocked all judicial appointments to the Appellate Body, ultimately stopping its operations in December 2019.
\n
This left a dangerous gap: a country that loses a dispute can now "appeal into the void", making the ruling impossible to be enforced, and pushing global trade back to a time when the trade system was based on power, when laws couldn't be enforced against the strong. The administration rendered inoperable the Appellate Body for strategic reasons. A working WTO would have made its one-sided tariffs illegal and allowed legitimate, multilateral retaliation.
\n
Initially, countries around the world were cautious. But as it became clear to them that the US' attack was part of a larger plan, they began collaborating to stop it. Major US trading partners, such as Japan, Canada and the European Union, began filing cases with the WTO and preparing to impose tariffs on US goods in response.
\n
More importantly, some countries took steps to protect the system itself. Leaders of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, one of the world's largest trade deals, made it clear that it intended to counter the US' protectionism.
\n
For the Global South, the crisis is existential. The WTO is often the only defense for smaller, developing nations against the arbitrary use of power by economic giants. A world without a working dispute settlement mechanism is a world of bullying bilateralism and no help for developing, smaller countries. The Brazil-US cotton dispute and other landmark cases showed the WTO system could make things fairer, allowing a developing country to successfully challenge a superpower based on the law.
\n
The shock of the US acting alone made the alternative to a rules-based order painfully clear, giving the victim countries a strong reason to support WTO reform. When the US ceased to be the global leader, it left a hole which other countries could fill and revitalize the multilateral system as has been advocated by the Global South countries for decades.
\n
Any revitalization of the WTO must count on China. As the primary target of the US' tariffs, it has skillfully positioned itself as a champion of the multilateral system, filing WTO complaints and issuing white papers that defend the rules-based global trade order.
\n
Economies and groupings such as the EU, Japan and BRICS+ need China's support to resist US unilateralism and restore the DSM. But, incidentally, some of them share the US' analysis of the "problems" with China's economic model, such as on subsidies and State-owned enterprises, pursuing trilateral cooperation to set new WTO rules tLine truncated

Most merchandise in the grocery store is imported from India and Canada, which faces potential US tariff hikes.
\n
MUMBAI — Indian exporters are scrambling for options to mitigate the fallout of the United States' threatened tariff salvo against the world's most populous country.
\n
Many warn of dire job losses after US President Donald Trump said he would double new import tariffs from 25 percent to 50 percent if India continues to buy Russian oil.
\n
"At 50 percent tariff, no product from India can stand any competitive edge," said economist Garima Kapoor from Elara Securities.
\n
India, one of the world's largest crude oil importers, has until Aug 27 to find alternatives to replace around one-third of its current oil supply from abroad.
\n
While New Delhi is not an export powerhouse, it shipped goods worth about $87 billion to the US last year.
\n
That 50 percent levy now threatens to upend low-margin, labor-intensive industries ranging from gems and jewelry to textiles and seafood.
\n
The Global Trade Research Initiative estimates a potential 60 percent drop in US sales this year in sectors such as garments.
\n
Exporters say they are racing to fulfil orders before the deadline.
\n
"Whatever we can ship before Aug 27, we are shipping," said Vijay Kumar Agarwal, chairman of Creative Group, a textile and garment exporter in Mumbai that has a nearly 80 percent exposure to the US market.
\n
However, Agarwal warned that is merely triage.
\n
Shipping goods before the deadline "doesn't solve" the problem, he said.
\n
"If it doesn't get resolved, there will be chaos," he said, adding he was worried for the future of his 15,000 to 16,000 employees.
\n
"It is a very gloomy situation ... it will be an immense loss of business."
\n
Talks to resolve the matter hinge on geopolitics, far from the reach of business.
\n
Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, and New Delhi, with long-standing ties with Moscow, is in a delicate situation.
\n
Since the US tariff threats, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, urging a "peaceful resolution" to the conflict.
\n
Livelihoods at risk
\n
Meanwhile, the US tariff effect is already being felt in India.
\n
Businesses say fresh orders from some US buyers have begun drying up — threatening millions of dollars in future business and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands in the world's fifth-biggest economy.
\n
Seafood exporters, who have been told by some US buyers to hold shipments, are hoping for new customers.
\n
"We are looking to diversify our markets," said Alex Ninan, who is a partner at the Baby Marine Group.
\n
"The United States is totally out right now. We will have to push our products to alternative markets, such as China, Japan ... Russia is another market we are really looking into."
\n

",

"description": "

South Africa is negotiating with the United States to scrap or reduce a 30 percent tariff imposed by Washington last week, while making progress in trade diversification, senior officials say.
\n
Parks Tau, South Africa's minister of trade, industry and competition, said in a media briefing on Tuesday that they have been engaging with US counterparts since Friday after the tariffs took effect, to remove them or get a mutually beneficial trade deal.
\n
They are negotiating with the US while seeking markets in other parts of the world, Tau said. "The Cabinet has approved that South Africa submit a revised offer as a basis for negotiations with the US."
\n
The new offer builds on the previous offer submitted in May and "substantively responds to the issues the US has raised in the 2025 National Trade Estimate Report", he said.
\n
"The government is going to do everything possible to keep the American market open for our goods. We will, at the same time, accelerate our efforts to diversify markets and build on the efforts we have put in place to ensure predictability in trade and leverage all our existing partnerships to secure markets for our products."
\n
South Africa has already addressed sanitary and phytosanitary measures in compliance with the biosecurity protocols affecting poultry and pork, Tau said. Under the protocol, the US can leverage the Tariff Rate Quota of 72,000 metric tons agreed in 2016.
\n
Meanwhile, he said his country will use the African Continental Free Trade Area to increase exports across Africa. South Africa will chair the Southern African Customs Union next month, where they will discuss the "unilateral trade tariffs" and decide on the mitigating measures as a region, he added.
\n
"The diversification is a strategic imperative to ensure better resilience of our economy to economic shocks. This is not a plan B; it is a plan A for long-term resilience and competitiveness.
\n
"We are looking at Asia — including Japan, Vietnam and Thailand — the Middle East, and India. We are pursuing these markets because we see growing demand, existing negotiations and a positive reception to South African products. This is not just about trade numbers; it is directly linked to job protection."
\n
Also on Tuesday, South Africa's Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen said the country anticipates signing a deal with China next month to export plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots and prunes.
\n
The minister recently accompanied Deputy President Paul Mashatile to visit China, meeting various industries to increase South Africa's footprint there.
\n
"For the first time, we have been negotiating with China on five products, which are plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots and prunes," Steenhuisen said.
\n
"We are to conclude the signing of the protocol next month. We are exploring the zero-tariff platform from China. We are also engaging in zero tariffs, on what it means when we can start benefiting from it.
\n
"We see some market growth potential there. China is one of the most populous countries, and if we get more consumers for our products, the better."
\n
China has announced a zero-tariff policy granting duty-free access to all 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations. South Africa would like to diversify its trade markets to prevent "overexposure" going into the future, Steenhuisen said.
\n
He expressed concern that, while negotiating with Washington on tariffs, some US officials are raising "other issues outside that space".
\n
The US is South Africa's third-largest trading partner after the European Union and China, accounting for about 7.5 percent of its exports. Meanwhile, South Africa is the 43rd export destination for US goods and accounts for just 0.25 percent of US imports. The country is therefore not a threat to US production, Tau said.
\n
Complementary ties
\n
He added that South Africa intends to prove that its exports do not pose a threat to US industries and that the trade relationship is, in fact, complementary. Tau said they will join more than 130 countries affected by the US tariffs to trade with them.
\n
South Africa will assist local companies in boosting domestic sales of products, with the online platform's future export capability to support export market diversification, he said. They will help companies affected by tariffs to get alternative trade deals in other parts of the world and financial support, he added.
\n
Bongani Motsa, a senior economist at the Minerals Council South Africa, said that among those expected to be hit by US tariffs are South Africa's iron ore and diamond sectors.
\n
"The direct impact will be minimal. |

"description": "

MOSCOW/BERLIN — US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss "all the accumulated issues "in bilateral relations when they meet in Alaska on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
\n
Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexey Fadeev also said the consultations requested by European countries were "insignificant".
\n
"We consider the consultations sought by the Europeans to be politically and practically insignificant," Fadeev said in a briefing.
\n
"The Europeans verbally support the diplomatic efforts of Washington and Moscow to resolve the crisis around Ukraine, but in fact the European Union is sabotaging them," he said.
\n
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders held urgent talks with Trump on Wednesday. Trump and Vice-President JD Vance later joined the conversation, according to a source familiar with the situation.
\n
The summit is so far planned to go ahead without Zelensky. This has fueled fears Kyiv could be forced into painful concessions, notably over land.
\n
Zelensky has called for a full ceasefire, a proposal which Russia has rejected.
\n
Ahead of a conference call with Trump and European leaders, Zelensky, who has spoken with more than 30 international leaders in the last few days, said "pressure must be exerted on Russia for the sake of fair peace".
\n
EU leaders stressed on Tuesday "the inherent right of Ukraine to choose its own destiny" and that "international borders must not be changed by force".
\n
But Fadeev on Wednesday said the EU rhetoric "about supposed support for finding peaceful solutions is just another attempt to stall the settlement process".
\n
The unpredictability of the summit in Alaska has fueled Europeans' fears that the US and Russia could take far-reaching decisions over their heads and even seek to coerce Ukraine into an unfavorable deal.
\n
European leaders, wary of angering Trump, have repeatedly said they welcome his efforts while stressing there should be no deal about Ukraine without Ukraine's participation.
\n
The US administration tempered expectations on Tuesday for major progress toward a ceasefire, calling the meeting with Putin in Alaska a "listening exercise".
\n
Trump's agreement last week for a summit with Putin was an abrupt shift after weeks of voicing frustration with Putin for resisting the US peace initiative. Trump said his envoy had made "great progress" at talks in Moscow.
\n
European unity
\n
Half a dozen senior European officials told Reuters they see a risk of a deal being struck that is unfavorable for Europe and Ukraine's security. They said European unity would be vital if that happened.
\n
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday the summit would be a "listening exercise" for Trump to hear what it would take to get to a deal.
\n
After the meeting with Trump, the "coalition of the willing", a group of countries working on plans to support Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, will also convene online.
\n
A Gallup Poll released last week found that 69 percent of Ukrainians favor a negotiated end to the fighting as soon as possible. But polls also indicate Ukrainians do not want peace at any cost if that means crushing concessions.
\n
Zelensky said it would be impossible for Kyiv to agree to a deal that would require it to withdraw its troops from the eastern Donbas region, a large swathe of which is already occupied by Russia.
\n
That, he told reporters on Tuesday, would deprive Ukraine of a vast defensive network in the region, easing the way for a Russian push deeper into Ukraine in the future.
\n
He said the territorial issues could only be discussed once a ceasefire was in place and Ukraine had received security guarantees.
\n
On the battlefield, Ukraine's military said on Wednesday its drones hit the Unecha oil pumping station in Russia's Bryansk region overnight.
\n
The Russian army made its biggest 24-hour advance into Ukraine in over a year on Tuesday just ahead of the summit, according to an AFP analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

"title": "012WORLD - Heat wave triggers wildfires across southern Europe",
|

"description": "

A resident reacts as blazes burn a hill during a wildfire in the village of Tsoukalaiika, near Patras, western Greece, on Tuesday. Greece on Wednesday battled to contain more than 20 wildfires including one menacing its third-largest city Patras, as a heat wave stoked blazes and forced the evacuation of thousands of people in southern Europe.
\n
Southern Europe is in the grip of a deadly heat wave, with temperatures soaring past 40 C, sparking wildfires that have forced thousands to take emergency action in several countries, and triggering alerts for tourism hot spots.
\n
As extreme temperatures gripped France, the nation's weather agency, Meteo-France, activated red alerts, its most serious warning level, across 12 administrative units stretching from Atlantic Ocean coastal areas to Mediterranean Sea regions, reported Agence France-Presse.
\n
"Don't be fooled. This isn't normal, 'it's summer'. It's not normal. It's a nightmare," agricultural climatologist Serge Zaka told the French broadcaster BFMTV.
\n
In Montenegro and Albania, firefighters were racing against scorching temperatures and strong winds to contain rapidly spreading blazes, reported Deutsche Welle.
\n
Flames swept dangerously close to residential areas near Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, while in southern Albania's difficult-to-access terrain, desperate communities called for aerial assistance.
\n
In Croatia, a team of 150 firefighters worked through the night to protect residential areas from advancing flames near the coastal city of Split. Hungary reported record-breaking temperatures and fires burned along Bulgaria's southern borders.
\n
In Italy, a massive wildfire has been raging for several days on Mount Vesuvius, near Naples, with authorities suspecting arson as the cause. More than 150 firefighters, supported by aircraft and helicopters, are battling the blaze, reported The Times newspaper.
\n
'Hand of man'
\n
Raffaele De Luca, president of Vesuvius National Park, said: "One can't exclude the hand of man being behind these fires simply because statistics tell us that 90 percent of fires are caused deliberately or through negligence."
\n
Italian authorities issued red alert warnings for seven major cities, including Florence and Bologna, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40 C in many locations this week.
\n
In Spain's northwestern region, emergency crews battled flames on Monday that ravaged a historic Roman mining complex and also displaced hundreds of locals, reported Al Jazeera.
\n
Spain's Environment Minister Juan Carlos Suarez-Quinones, said firefighters at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Las Medulas faced severe challenges from soaring temperatures and winds reaching 40 kilometers per hour.
\n
He said the extreme conditions created dangerous "fire whirls" in the valley, which intensified when the flames spread to more open, oxygen-rich areas where temperatures approached 40 C.
\n
Almost 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in northern, central and southern Spain, reported The Guardian newspaper.
\n
Near Madrid, a fire claimed one life and forced 180 residents of Tres Cantos to evacuate to local sports centers. Officials described the blaze, driven by dry storm winds exceeding 70 kph, as "explosive" in nature.
\n
Cristina Santin Nuno, a fire scientist at the Spanish National Research Council, told The Guardian that the combination of a wet spring in Spain followed by extreme heat and strong winds created perfect fire conditions.
\n
"If we add to this the relatively easy possibility that a spark can ignite a fire somewhere … we have all the ingredients for the 'Molotov cocktail' we're seeing right now," she said.
\n
A large-scale firefighting operation involving nearly 700 personnel was underway in northern Portugal, where flames have been burning since Saturday in the Trancoso region, 350 kilometers from Lisbon.
\n
In Turkiye's Canakkale Province, fires near the tourist village of Guzelyali forced more than 2,000 people to evacuate and hospitalized 77 people for smoke inhalation. More than 760 firefighters with aerial support battled the flames during what officials confirmed as Turkiye's hottest July in 55 years.
\n
Scientists say Europe is experiencing a faster rate of warming attributed to climate change than the global average, with the trend threatening its infrastructure and people's health.
\n
jonathan@mail.chinadailyuk.com
\n

",

"title": "013BUSINESS - Loan subsidies set to boost consumption",

"description": "

Shoppers buy vegetables at a supermarket in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province.
\n
China has unveiled a policy granting interest subsidies for consumer loans for a year, in a bid to cut household borrowing costs, stimulate spending, and accelerate economic growth by aligning fiscal and monetary measures.
\n
Vice-Minister of Finance Liao Min said on Wednesday this marks the first time the central government has subsidized individual consumer loans. From Sept 1, 2025, to Aug 31, 2026, those taking out personal consumer loans — excluding credit cards — from approved lenders and use them for actual consumption will qualify for the program.
\n
The subsidy covers single transactions under 50,000 yuan ($6,968) and single transactions of 50,000 yuan or more in key areas such as autos, elderly care, childbirth, education and training, culture and tourism, home furnishing and renovation, electronics and healthcare. At 1 percentage point, the subsidy ratio is about one-third of current commercial bank rates for such loans.
\n
Lou Feipeng, a researcher at Postal Savings Bank of China, said the measure will lower consumption costs and boost peoples' willingness to spend, while requiring banks to strictly verify loan use and, if necessary, channel funds through entrusted payments to control their flow.
\n
Industry experts believe the policy will ease debt burdens, support consumption, stimulate economic recovery and help stabilize banks' net interest margins.
\n
Lou said the subsidies will reduce interest costs through fiscal-financial coordination — unlike competitive rate-cutting — and share loan risks, protecting banks' net interest margins and asset quality while expanding business.
\n
Dong Ximiao, chief researcher at Merchants Union Consumer Finance and deputy director of the Shanghai Institution for Finance &Development, added that the policy will directly cut borrowing costs, encourage households to use credit to improve living standards and spur effective financing demand. This, he said, will increase lending by banks and consumer finance companies while keeping rates at reasonable levels, strengthening policy coordination to boost consumption and domestic demand.
\n
The financial sector widely agrees the key current challenge in the credit market is lackluster demand, not a lack of funds. China's central bank data show that in the first half, household loans rose by 1.17 trillion yuan, down from 1.46 trillion yuan a year earlier. Industrial Securities cited income and job pressures, plus tighter bank credit amid rising bad loans, as twin drags on consumer lending. Subsidies, by lowering borrowing costs and encouraging lending, could revive consumer lending without adding liquidity, as banks lend their own funds and apply subsidies afterward, allowing flexibility as financing costs change.
\n
Zeng Gang, chief expert and director of the Shanghai Institution for Finance & Development, urged banks to target key spending areas like autos, appliances and tourism, design matching subsidized loan products, set clear terms, streamline applications and lower the threshold for people to obtain credit.
\n
Major lenders, including Agricultural Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Bank of China, are optimizing procedures and innovating products to implement the plan. A total of 23 authorized institutions — six large State-owned commercial banks, 12 joint-stock banks and five additional consumer loan providers — will handle the loans. Experts believe that their nationwide reach and scale will enable the policy to be rolled out quickly and deliver results in the near term.
\n
Authorities have required lenders to improve their information systems to accurately identify payments from consumer accounts to merchants, ensuring that the subsidy funds truly support consumption.
\n
Zeng stressed strict verification of loan purposes, post-loan monitoring, cooperation with regulators in subsidy checks, and maintaining full records for transparency.
\n
jiangxueqing@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"description": "

Property developer China Evergrande Group announced on Tuesday that the Hong Kong stock exchange has decided to delist it, effective Aug 25, and the company confirmed it will not apply for a review.
\n
The announcement came after a letter was received from the bourse operator on Friday, stating that Evergrande, which is already in the process of liquidation, "failed to fulfil any of the requirements" for resumption of trade.
\n
The final listing day will be Aug 22, with the delisting taking effect three days later, bringing an end to its 16-year run as a Hong Kong-listed entity.
\n
Trading of the company's shares has been halted since Jan 29, 2024, the same day the Hong Kong High Court ordered its liquidation. Under the exchange's rules, a company that remains suspended for 18 consecutive months faces removal.
\n
Following the delisting, the appointed liquidators plan to give notice of material developments in the company's liquidation, as appropriate, by publishing them on the liquidation information website.
\n
The liquidators on Tuesday released the first progress report covering the past 18 months, which showed that they have taken control of more than 100 entities within the group, with assets under their direct management valued at around HK$27 billion ($3.5 billion).
\n
In a separate development, property firm China South City Holdings Ltd was ordered into liquidation by the Hong Kong High Court on Monday after failing to secure enough creditor support for its restructuring proposal. Trading in its shares was suspended the same day.
\n
The liquidation petition was filed in January by creditor Citicorp International, citing the company's failure to repay $306 million in debt that reached maturity last April.
\n
As of the end of 2024, China South City reported total liabilities of HK$60.9 billion, along with a net loss of nearly HK$9 billion for the year.
\n
irisli@chinadailyhk.com
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

Meanwhile, their exports reached 4.1 trillion yuan, an increase of 4.9 percent on a yearly basis, data from the General Administration of Customs showed.
\n
Wang Xiaohong, a researcher at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges in Beijing, said that due to its mix of cost efficiency, product quality and modern infrastructure, China's industrial ecosystem is becoming a dynamic hub for joint innovation, enabling multinationals to recruit local talent and work closely with local partners to develop and grow together.
\n
Chiron Machine Tools (Taicang) Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Germany's Chiron Group and a manufacturer of numerical control machine tools in Taicang, Jiangsu province, said its business in China has grown by 300 percent over the past decade.
\n
With China entering a new era of green and innovation-driven growth, the German manufacturer has expanded its reach beyond the domestic market in recent years, shipping products to destinations including Poland, Vietnam and Thailand.
\n
"This shift has been underpinned by our engineering team's independent development of a linear motor-driven machine tool designed for new energy vehicle component processing in China," said Wang Jian, the company's director of operations.
\n
Wang said that the new model delivers significantly higher productivity than conventional machines, while its automotive structural parts cutting technology boosts processing efficiency by 40 percent.
\n
Driven by localized innovation, Chiron Machine Tools (Taicang)'s foreign trade value soared 100 percent year-on-year to 13 million yuan during the January-July period, data from Nanjing Customs showed.
\n
Conti (Ningbo) Electrical Equipment Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Italy's Conti Valerio Srl and a manufacturer of high-end coffee grinders in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has introduced and localized several patented technologies from its parent company.
\n
"These technologies include silent grinding, stepless micrometric adjustment and anti-clumping systems. They can enable baristas and consumers to enjoy a more efficient and consistent grinding experience," said Ye Fangbin, the company's president.
\n
In addition to supplying products to the domestic market, Conti (Ningbo)'s export value exceeded 15 million yuan between January and July, up 33.7 percent year-on-year, with exports to Southeast Asian markets reaching nearly 6 million yuan, an increase of 64.9 percent from the same period last year, according to Ningbo Customs.
\n
"As China has advanced its infrastructure and industrial systems, it has retained its role as a low-cost production hub while evolving into a hub for sophisticated, high-value manufacturing, allowing foreign companies to adopt more advanced production processes," said Peng Bo, a researcher specializing in international economic cooperation at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation in Beijing.
\n
Global investment is increasingly targeting customized innovation, supply chain optimization, high-end manufacturing, and digital and green solutions in China now, said Peng.
\n
Foreign direct investment in China's manufacturing sector amounted to 109.06 billion yuan in the first half, while high-tech industries attracted 127.87 billion yuan. FDI inflows from Switzerland, Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany rose by 68.6 percent, 59.1 percent, 37.6 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce.
\n
Amid China's rapid growth in artificial intelligence and computing capacity, US materials science company Corning plans to localize the production of high-end optical fibers in Shanghai.
\n
The move aims to meet surging demand for denser, faster data transmission in AI data centeLine truncated

"description": "

A charging station for new energy vehicles in Chuzhou, Anhui province, on July 28.
\n
China's economy is demonstrating a powerful recovery, with daily power usage recently reaching a record high 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours, which industry experts believe is a clear testament to the vitality and resilience of the world's second-largest economy.
\n
This significant upturn underscores a vigorous and dynamic economic rebound, demonstrating a broad-based revitalization now clearly evident across the industrial, commercial and residential sectors, said Lin Boqiang, head of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University.
\n
On July 16, the National Energy Administration said that China's maximum power load once again set a new historical record, surpassing 1.5 billion kW for the first time and reaching a peak of 1.506 billion kW.
\n
This represents an increase of 55 million kW compared to last year's peak load, it said, adding that it also marks the third time a historical record has been broken this month, following recent highs set on July 4(1.465 billion kW) and July 7 (1.467 billion kW).
\n
A power load of 1.5 billion kW is equivalent to 15 billion 100-watt light bulbs being lit simultaneously.
\n
Industry experts said the record suggests that underlying demand is robust, and production capacities are being fully utilized, painting a very positive picture of the near-term growth trajectory.
\n
"This record daily power consumption figure of 1.5 billion kWh is arguably one of the most compelling real-time indicators of China's economic resurgence," said Lin.
\n
"Electricity usage directly reflects activity in factories, commercial establishments, and households. This surge unequivocally confirms that the world's second-largest economy is not just recovering, but demonstrating significant vitality and resilience."
\n
Peng Peng, secretary-general of the China New Energy Investment and Financing Alliance, an industry group, said the widespread and sustained high temperatures experienced across the country this summer also fueled a significant surge in demand.
\n
The escalating electricity usage figure directly reflects China's accelerating economic engine. According to data released by the NEA, power consumed by the primary industry gained 4.9 percent in June year-on-year, while the secondary industry's consumption rose by 3.2 percent.
\n
Factories and infrastructure projects are operating at increased capacities, driving demand, it said.
\n
Services sector is also rebounding, with tertiary power use climbing 9 percent in June. Household consumption increased 10.8 percent to 129.1 billion kWh, it said.
\n
The NEA affirmed that the nation's overall power supply remains stable, a capability stemming from decades of strategic planning and investment.
\n
At the heart of this success is China's diversified energy structure. The nation leverages coal, hydropower, and a rapidly expanding portfolio of clean energy sources like nuclear, wind, and solar power, a multipronged approach that ensures a resilient supply chain.
\n
China's advanced power grid technology also ensures seamless supply. According to the China Electricity Council, the nation has significantly upgraded its grid infrastructure and capacity in recent years, with interprovincial transmission capability now exceeding 300 million kW.
\n
Accelerating the creation of a unified national power market is also expected to further enhance the efficient distribution of power resources across the country, said Yang Kun, the council's executive vice-chairman.
\n
China has also fully leveraged the resource allocation capabilities of its massive ultrahigh voltage power grid to significantly increase interregional and interprovincial power transmission, with the maximum power transmitted by State Grid Corp of China having already surpassed 225 million kW.
\n
"The record electricity consumption indicates China's economic vitality and effective energy strategy," said Lin.
\n
"It demonstrates our capacity to fuel rapid growth and ensure energy security through a resilient, technologically advanced power system."
\n
China's experience in managing soaring energy demand while maintaining stability offers valuable insights. Its ability to sustain robust economic growth, underpinned by secure energy, showcases a model of strategic foresight and operational excellence in energy governance, he said.
\n

",

"Chinese people are much more globally minded than we are," Colston said at the opening ceremony.
\n
Tang Jiahao from the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, developed a health management application to help his mother track her well-being. Right: A view of a South Korean-style food street there in 2023.
\n
NANJING — South Korean director Choi Sik-min, known for his screenplay work on popular TV series, has found a favored filming location: the city of Yancheng in East China's Jiangsu province.
\n
After filming his first short production The Drama Club in Yancheng, Choi has gone on to shoot over 20 collaborative short films there, all are coproduced by China and Republic of Korea, including The Forbidden Master, which has gained over 370 million views online to date.
\n
Choi's favorite filming spot in the city is China-ROK International Street, also known as Dongdaemun KK-PARK, located in the Yancheng Economic and Technological Development Zone.
\n
Inspired by the famed Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, the block in Yancheng blends streamlined modern design with traditional elements of Korean houses, creating a South Korean-style international entertainment district that integrates amusement and commerce.
\n
Since opening in 2022, the block has positioned itself as a key South Korean cultural landmark in the Yangtze River Delta region, according to Dong Zhengxia, chairman of Jiangsu Century New City Cultural Tourism Development Company.
\n
Its South Korean characteristics and diverse business models, including themed hotels, amusement parks, theaters and restaurants, offer a wide range of filming locations for film crews. Low costs and high efficiency of ready-made filming environments are major draws for South Korean filmmakers, Dong says.
\n
"The filming and labor costs in the ROK are relatively high, almost three times those here," Dong explains.
\n
Long before the cameras roll each day, golf carts are already streaking across Yancheng's emerald fairways. Ryu Ku-keun, president of Yancheng's South Korean chamber of commerce, quipped that in ROK, the three best-known Chinese destinations are Zhangjiajie (in Hunan province), Shanghai and Yancheng.
\n
"Zhangjiajie is for sightseeing, Shanghai is for shopping, and Yancheng is where South Korean golfers come to swing," Ryu says.
\n
Fueled by a booming Sino-South Korean travel scene, the city's pristine golf courses and frequent flights have turned it into a golfer's paradise. Sheyang Island Golf Club now tops South Korean social-media rankings and is a prime destination for weekend golfers visiting China.
\n
With a population of about 50 million, the ROK counts roughly 5 million golf enthusiasts, making the sport popular almost nationwide, Ryu says.
\n
Since last April, Sheyang Island Golf Club has been partnering with a Chinese travel agency to roll out an all-inclusive package tour that includes round-trip flights and hotel accommodation. They are now promoting the Yancheng golf tours in the ROK market.
\n
In November 2024, China implemented a 30-day visa-free entry policy for ROK citizens. Yancheng seized the opportunity, working to create a South Korean wave in inbound tourism.
\n
Flights from Seoul to Yancheng operate every Tuesday and Saturday, taking just two hours. A day of golf in Yancheng costs about 400 yuan ($56) per person, including lunch. One night in a star-rated hotel in Sheyang county costs 200-300 yuan, and the round-trip airfare is about 3,000 yuan, Ryu says.
\n
"All these costs add up to less than half of the golfing costs back in the ROK," he says. However, most people visit Yancheng only for playing golf, not for sightseeing, he says, which he finds regrettable.
\n
Ryu plans to take matters into his own hands. "I have already got in touch with ROK travel agencies and am working to attract visitors. In addition to golf, I will arrange trips to Yancheng's scenic spots."
\n
Since a China-ROK industrial park opened in Yancheng in 2017, the city is now a barometer of bilateral cooperation in China's Yangtze River Delta.
\n
To date, some 1,000 ROK firms have set up shop in Yancheng, bringing in more than $13 billion dollars in investment. A standout project is SK On's battery mega-factory, which has been Jiangsu's largest foreign investment project in recent years.
\n
More than 10,000 ROK nationals now live and work in Yancheng. For them, the city has been a home away from home, Ryu says.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site
</dLine truncated

"description": "

Denise Wynne (left), a descendant of a British POW, and Liang Jing, the producer and executive producer of Dongji Rescue, pose for a photo after a special screening of the film on May 21.
\n
The film Dongji Rescue, based on a true historical event, tells the story of Chinese fishermen braving turbulent seas to save strangers — a testament to the nation's capacity to create miracles in the face of adversity.
\n
Eighty-three years ago, in 1942, the Japanese military seized the Lisbon Maru ship to transport 1,816 British prisoners of war from Hong Kong to Japan. Passing through the waters near Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, it was torpedoed by a US submarine. Fishermen from Zhoushan rescued 384 prisoners of war and hid them from Japanese search parties.
\n
Actor Zhu Yilong, in an exclusive interview with China Daily, said he was deeply moved by the humanity shown in such extreme conditions when he accepted his role. "This historical event proves that in dire circumstances, Chinese people can extend their goodness to protect both themselves and others," he said.
\n
Last Friday, a themed event for Dongji Rescue was held in Zhoushan, a city close to where the Lisbon Maru sank. Descendants of the British POWs and the rescuing fishermen gathered to watch the film and share their reflections.
\n
In the film, the British POWs are aided by a group of fishermen from Dongji Island, whose courage and compassion cut a path through treacherous waves. After the screening, many descendants were visibly moved.
\n
"I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Chinese people and the descendants of Chinese fishermen. When the film is released in the UK, I will bring my family and friends to watch it. Heroic acts like this deserve to be known worldwide," said Denise Wynne, a descendant of a British POW.
\n
"I felt the profound friendship between the Chinese and British people through the film," said Li Hui, a descendant of a rescuer. Many audience members were brought to tears — some by the fishermen's bravery, others by the enduring spirit of "never abandoning those in peril".
\n
"In times of sea peril, rescue is a must," said Wu Buwei, another rescuer's descendant, noting that this value has long been a part of Dongji fishermen's traditions.
\n
Coincidentally, on the morning of Aug 5, a real-life rescue unfolded on the shores of Dongfushan in Dongji town. Two tourists from Shanghai fell into the sea and were swept away by powerful waves. Without hesitation, two descendants of Dongji fishermen — Wang Yubin and Yang Xiaoping — leaped in to save them, braving a wind force of 9 to 10 before pulling them to safety.
\n
"Our forebearers once rescued many British POWs here. As their descendants, we should carry forward their bravery," Wang said. Both rescuers later joined the film's cast and crew at the Zhoushan event, sharing the stage with actors who portrayed the fishermen in a symbolic "reunion across 83 years".
\n
Chinese actor Wu Lei, who plays A Dang in the film, expressed his respect for the two rescuing fishermen on-site.
In the film, A Dang saves a British POW named Thomas Newman. Though they share no common language, they manage to connect. In an interview with China Daily, Wu said, "They connected through a small globe. A Dang understood when Newman pointed out his home, the UK, on the globe."
\n
The film's director Fei Zhenxiang noted that the Eastern Front in World War II is often overlooked internationally, despite China's 14 years of resistance tying down large numbers of Japanese troops. "title": "019SPORTS - Real Madrid slams proposed US-based La Liga fixture, saying it sets 'an unacceptable precedent'",
|
||||
"description": "

Real Madrid said it "firmly rejects "having a regular-season Spanish league game played in the United States and warned of "a turning point in the world of football".
\n
Villarreal, in contrast, is promising free travel and tickets for season-ticket holders if its match against Barcelona in Miami is approved, in what would be a first for the league. The 17th-round match in La Liga would be played at the Hard Rock Stadium.
\n
Madrid said Tuesday it has taken action to keep the Dec 20 match from happening, claiming it would hurt the "integrity of the competition" and the "legitimacy of the results".
\n
"The measure, which was taken without prior information or consultation of the clubs participating in the competition, infringes the essential principle of territorial reciprocity, which applies in two-legged league competitions (one match at home and the other at the home of the opposing team), upsetting the competitive balance and giving an undue sporting advantage to the applicant clubs," Madrid said.
\n
The club said the match would set "an unacceptable precedent that opens the door to exceptions based on non-sporting interests, clearly affecting sporting integrity and risking the adulteration of the competition".
\n
"If this proposal were to be carried out, its consequences would be so serious that it would be a turning point in the world of football," Madrid said.
\n
The club said it has asked FIFA, UEFA and Spain's top sports body to not authorize the game in the US. The Spanish soccer federation on Monday approved a request for the match to be played in Miami. UEFA and FIFA now have to approve the request before it can be made official.
\n
"Any modification of this nature must, in any case, have the express and unanimous agreement of all the clubs participating in the competition, as well as strictly respecting the national and international rules governing the organization of official competitions," Madrid said.
\n
Madrid and Spanish league president Javier Tebas have often been at odds on various issues.
\n
The club said UEFA should deny the request to play the game abroad based on the "criterion established in 2018 that prevents official matches in domestic competitions from being played outside national territory, except in duly justified exceptional circumstances, which are not present here".
\n
Madrid said it asked the country's high sports council "not to grant the necessary administrative authorization without such unanimous consent".
\n
"Real Madrid reaffirms its commitment to respect the national and international rules that guarantee the fairness and proper functioning of official competitions, and will defend its compliance with them before all competent bodies," the club said.
\n
Earlier on Tuesday, Villarreal said its season ticket-holders can travel for free and receive free tickets for the match. It said those who don't want to go, or can't go, will get a 20 percent discount on their season tickets.
\n
"We would be the first (Spanish) team to play a league match abroad," Villarreal president Fernando Roig Alfonso told a news conference. "It would greatly help us expand our brand in a key market like the United States."
\n
Staging a match abroad has long been part of the league's goal to promote soccer and its brand in other countries.
\n
It first tried to stage a match in the US in 2018, with a game between Barcelona and Girona, but the idea was dismissed after criticism from players, fans and clubs. Subsequent attempts to play there also failed.
\n
In 2018, the league had offered compensation packages for Girona fans.
\n

获取更多RSS:
https://feedx.net
https://feedx.site

",

While the final time determines the result, runners remain acutely aware of their rival's movements — adding an extra layer of intensity.
\n
The Chengdu World Games women's speed final delivered a thrilling rematch between Sweden's Miranda Tibbling and the Netherlands' Noa Man. They started side-by-side, but Tibbling crossed the finish line 1.05 seconds faster, claiming the gold and leaving Man with silver — a carbon copy of their 2022 World Games podium positions in Birmingham, Alabama, where Man had topped Tibbling in freestyle, just a day before losing to her in speed.
\n
"It's nice, because if we're in the finals together, we can go faster. We're pushing each other to become better," said Man.
\n
"Our goal was to both reach the podium — and we succeeded."
\n
Both born in 2004, the pair became the first women to win titles in parkour at a World Games with the event debuting at the sporting gala in 2022.
\n
When they first met at an international meet, they were too shy to speak. But, over time, as the pair have repeatedly shared competition podiums, they have grown closer — eventually becoming best friends.
\n
Man dominated the season's first FIG Parkour World Cup held in Amsterdam in May, claiming gold in both the speed and freestyle events on her home turf. The event also saw a strong performance from Tibbling, who secured a silver medal in speed.
\n
During competition season, they train, compete and hang out together. This time in Chengdu, they're looking forward to exploring the city together after the competition.
\n
"I'd love to see the pandas and temples," said Man.
\n
Tibbling especially loves the camaraderie within the parkour community, pointing out that at parkour competitions, everyone cheers for, and supports, one another — a level of harmony rarely seen in other sports.
\n
"It's more than just a good sport. It's a whole lifestyle," she said.
\n
The pair also encourage other women to give the sport a go.
\n
"In parkour, you can do the same flip as a boy," said Tibbling. "It's just about your mindset. You may think you can't ..."
\n
"... but you can if you train," they said in unison.
\n
Parkour is gaining momentum in countries like China, Italy and Japan, and the World Games have become a prime stage for the sport's top athletes to showcase their skills — and their camaraderie.
\n
For Chinese freerunner Fu Sida, 24, the games were less about getting podium finishes and more about reconnecting.
\n
"I'm just happy to see old friends," said Fu, who started parkour when he was 18 after watching online videos. "I really admire Shea Rudolph's style. He's cool! We've met three times, and we always have great conversations."
\n
Twenty-five-year-old Rudolph, bronze medalist for the United States in the men's freestyle on Tuesday, echoed the sentiment.
\n
"Everybody here is part of the parkour community. We're so close. That's one of the best things about this sport," he said.
\n
Fu invited Rudolph to train together at his parkour club in Shanghai. "Unfortunately, I'll be leaving Thursday," Rudolph said.
\n
"But I think we're going to see some pandas — maybe tomorrow."
\n

",

Over 1,100 Jiujiang fans traveled on Jiangxi's first soccer-dedicated high-speed train scheduled for the game.
\n
"It was timely aid," said Huang Ruilu, vice-chairman of the Jiangxi Football Association. "Originally we planned to organize fan buses to Yingtan, but a one-way trip takes four hours. With matches ending around 10 pm, same-day return was nearly impossible. The special train arrived like coal in a snowstorm," he said.
\n
Team chants and slogans reverberated through the train with no fear of disturbing other passengers. Among the fans was a 100-strong cheer squad of relatives and friends of Nie Haotian, a Jiujiang player.
\n
The 22-year-old Renmin University student scored a crucial goal in a prior match against Jingdezhen.
\n
"We've watched him grow up — we're so proud!" said one of Nie's neighbors "Sister Bao". "description": "

The Ministry of Public Security's Criminal Investigation Bureau disclosed new details surrounding the 2024 breakthrough in the Wuwangdun tomb robbery case on Sunday, unpacking a six-year investigation filled with gang betrayals and cutting-edge forensic technology — its twists and turns rivaling a suspense thriller.
\n
In June 2024, Huainan police in Anhui province successfully cracked the high-profile case involving the robbery of the Wuwangdun tomb. After six years of investigation, police arrested 49 suspects and recovered 113 priceless artifacts last year, shedding light on the secrets hidden within the more than 2,000-year-old tomb.
\n
The Wuwangdun tomb, located in Huainan, is the largest in scale, highest in rank and most structurally complex Chu state tomb ever excavated through scientific measures to date, as recognized by the National Cultural Heritage Administration. It is identified as the final resting place of King Kaolie of Chu, who reigned during the late Warring States Period (475-221 BC).
\n
According to a statement released by the ministry on Sunday, between 2015 and 2018, tomb raiding gangs repeatedly infiltrated the site, causing significant cultural heritage loss. The case came to light in June 2018 when Huainan police received a tip from the Ministry of Public Security and swiftly formed a special task force. Through advanced big data analytics, investigators traced key suspects to Henan province, exposing a sprawling criminal network extending across several provinces.
\n
The gang operated under the guise of "earthwork engineering "companies, employing specialized vehicles and walkie-talkies to evade detection. After multiple thefts from Wuwangdun, they planned to blast open the tomb of Lian Po, a famous general during the Warring States Period.
\n
In a major operation on Nov 5,2018, over 200 police officers simultaneously raided locations across several provinces, capturing 19 suspects and confiscating explosives, detonators and specialized tools to raid tombs.
\n
Investigators prioritized tracking the illicit flow of stolen artifacts, uncovering internal disputes among gang members. Notably, a suspect surnamed Zhang took advantage of a moment when his accomplices were not paying attention to secretly hide a valuable bronze "tiger-seat phoenix-emitting drum" in his hometown in Henan. Police eventually recovered the artifact.
\n
Another suspect, surnamed Sun, secretly made off with a pair of gilded bronze rings behind his accomplices' backs. The rings were retrieved after a three-month cross-border investigation involving the Ministry of Public Security and customs in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.
\n
The exposure of the robbery prompted the National Cultural Heritage Administration to authorize urgent archaeological excavation of the Wuwangdun site, initiated in 2020. In 2024, newly uncovered robbery sketches and abandoned modern tools found at the dig site provided critical leads that reinvigorated the case.
\n
Police re-interrogated key suspects using advanced forensic accounting and digital evidence analysis, leading to 14 more arrests in Shaanxi and Henan provinces and the recovery of an additional 35 artifacts, including fragmented sets of Chu bronze bells and stone chimes that were later painstakingly restored to their original form.
\n
Ultimately, authorities arrested 49 suspects and recovered 113 precious artifacts — including 28 classified as top-tier national treasures.
\n
The excavation of the Wuwangdun tomb received significant recognition in 2024, named among the "top new archaeological discoveries" by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and selected as one of the "top 10 national archaeological finds" by the National Cultural Heritage Administration.
\n
luowangshu@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

|
||||
"description": "

China has established a four-tier risk assessment system to enhance the nation's early warning capabilities for infectious diseases, according to a guideline released by the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration recently.
\n
The trial regulation, which takes effect immediately, aims to tackle public health risks caused by various infectious diseases, including the nation's 41 notifiable diseases, novel infectious illnesses and those with unknown causes.
\n
Under the guideline, local disease control agencies are required to collect infectious disease monitoring information from multiple sources and carry out risk evaluations. The risk levels are classified into four tiers from extremely low risk to high risk.
\n
An extremely low risk assessment only requires continuous implementation of regular monitoring, while a low-risk evaluation should prompt the release of health risk advisories to the public.
\n
"A health risk advisory is supposed to include pathogenic and epidemic characteristics of the disease, typical clinical symptoms, recent monitoring results, key control and preventive measures," it said. "Such an advisory should be scientific, clear, easy to understand and capable of being disseminated through various channels."
\n
With a medium-risk assessment, medical institutions and other related departments should take professional precautionary measures. Disease control authorities will consider issuing a warning, which is meant to be circulated across related government departments and healthcare institutions.
\n
A warning will include information about the hazards of the disease, the range of affected areas, development trends and suggestions on personnel technical training, supplies preparation, case identification and reporting procedures, ventilation and disinfection at key venues and other preventive measures, the guideline said.
\n
With a high-risk evaluation, disease control agencies should make reports to disease control authorities within two hours, who in turn will gather experts to further analyze and evaluate the severity of epidemic risk and determine if an alert should be issued by the regional government.
\n
The guideline also requests encouraging and supporting the use of digital technologies to define warning thresholds, as well as calls for the establishment of an epidemic database and related algorithm model libraries to build a multi-trigger and smart early warning system.
\n
It stresses providing necessary personnel, funding, equipment, infrastructure and policy support, as well as strengthening cross-department cooperation to facilitate early warning operations.
\n
"The early warning information should be clear, accurate, authoritative and professional, and pay attention to protecting personal privacy," it added.
\n
China aims to build a highly-efficient infectious early warning mechanism featuring multi-trigger points and swift dissemination by 2030, positioning itself among world-leading ranks in the field of early detection, scientific assessment and prompt early warning of epidemics.
\n
According to Lei Zhenglong, an official at the administration, China has carried out surveillance for the novel coronavirus, influenza and other acute respiratory diseases at 1,041 sentinel hospitals, covering all municipal-level regions and key counties.
\n
Meanwhile, various monitoring channels, including vector organisms, urban sewage, global trends and public opinions, have been used to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of monitoring.
\n
The central finance also invested funds in 2023 and 2024 to support the establishment of provincial-level information platforms, with Beijing, Tianjin and the provinces of Hubei and Zhejiang having completed initial construction.
\n
As of the end of last year, about 71 percent of secondary or tertiary public hospitals had been equipped with smart surveillance and early warning software as part of efforts to use novel technologies to improve analysis and assessments of epidemic data, Lei said.
\n
wangxiaoyu@chinadaily.com.cn
\n

",

"description": "

GEAIR, an intelligent breeding robot, performs cross-pollination of tomatoes in a greenhouse in Beijing on Dec 29, 2024.
\n
Chinese scientists have recently developed the world's first robot capable of conducting the full-process breeding of plants, highlighting the deep integration of biotechnology and artificial intelligence technologies in the agricultural intelligent breeding sector.
\n
GEAIR, the name of this new AI-based robot model, is expected to facilitate a breeding shift from experience-driven to precision agriculture. The study was published on Monday in the journal Cell.
\n
A scene once limited to a science fiction movie has now become a reality in a greenhouse, where GEAIR accurately identified a flower and extended its robotic arms to gently complete hybrid pollination. It shuttled effectively among the flowers and precisely carried out the whole breeding process.
\n
"AI and robots offer vast opportunities in shifting hybrid breeding toward precision agriculture to enhance crop yields, reduce costs and promote sustainable practices," said Xu Cao, a researcher at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
\n
Hybrid breeding, which seeks to ensure the "superior birth and raising" of crops, is an important way to enhance both crop yield and quality. However, massive repetitive cross-pollination operations are time-consuming and labor-intensive, according to Xu.
\n
Compared with the process involved in producing well-known hybrid rice varieties, GEAIR can apply new-generation breeding technologies, such as a speed-breeding approach, to achieve rapid customized breeding of superior varieties.
\n
Through AI visual recognition and positioning technologies, GEAIR is able to accurately move among crops to perform cross-pollination operations, thereby enhancing breeding efficiency.
\n
For instance, in soybean breeding, the robotized hybrid breeding option can achieve rapid creation of stigma-exserted male sterile lines, which is expected to break through a bottleneck in soybean hybrid breeding and significantly increase per-unit yield, Xu revealed.
\n
"Our new study initiated an intelligent breeding model of integrated biotechnology, AI and robot labor, marking China's successful pioneering efforts in the construction of a closed-loop technology system for intelligent robotized hybrid breeding," Xu said.
\n
"It also shows the application prospects of 'AI for science' in the sector of biological breeding," he added.
\n
The study team has demonstrated the potential of GEAIR in boosting efficiency and lowering costs through automated, faster breeding of climate-resilient crops, said Yang Minghao, an associate researcher of the Institute of Automation of the CAS.
\n

",

These bracelets — each unique in its bead arrangement and showing signs of manual craftsmanship — bring hope to around 50 households with disabled people in Jingshan town in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.
\n
"Having experienced employment challenges myself as a disabled person, I opened this craft store to create job opportunities for others like me," said Zhang Ruixia, the store's manager, seated in her wheelchair.
\n
The 36-year-old added that the orange color that dominates the store's logo, packaging and interior design was chosen for its warmth and inclusivity.
\n
Semi-paralyzed after a surgical mishap in 2016, Zhang initially sank into despair but managed to pull herself together within just six months.
\n
She then attempted various jobs — including as a graphic designer at an advertising agency and a telephone customer service staffer at a wheelchair retailer — but found that "these jobs demanded prolonged sitting, which the body simply couldn't endure".
\n
When Xu Hui, a public welfare worker, reached out to Zhang last year, she had already opened a small craft store in her hometown of Henan province after teaching herself various weaving techniques and beadwork designs through online videos.
\n
"Xu and I talked about how society is becoming more inclusive to people with disability, yet families with disabled people still face significant employment barriers, including some people who are unable to leave their homes to work, and mothers of those with intellectual disabilities struggling to take on full-time jobs," Zhang said. "I deeply resonated with his sentiments, so when he mentioned the Jingshan town project, I was like, 'That's it. Let's do it together.'"
\n
Previously, support for people with disabilities mainly involved providing supplies and skills training, but they often remained unemployed in the end, Xu said.
\n
"Our preliminary research found that what companies care about most is not who makes the product, but its quality. People with disabilities often demonstrate meticulous attention to detail and cherish every job opportunity, making them well-suited for craftwork," Xu said.
\n
The project — primarily targeting large companies, with additional sales channels through e-commerce platforms and physical stores — aims to secure stable orders, enabling disabled individuals to work either from home or at the workshop, on a part-time or full-time basis, Xu said.
\n
Recognizing the feasibility and practicality of the project, the local government extended substantial support to expedite the store's opening. This involved streamlining the verification process for their volunteer group "Better and Better" and offering the physical store and the workshop at rents only covering water and electricity expenses, he added.
\n
"To distinguish the bracelets from others, we have creatively incorporated Jingshan tea into the bead-making process," Zhang said, adding that the tea, as one of Zhejiang's top 10 famous teas, is not only a local specialty but also a crucial cultural origin of the Japanese tea ceremony.
\n
After three months of trials, Zhang finally developed a composite crafting technique that builds on traditional incense bead-making methods, with aged Jingshan tea as the primary raw material. This process involves grinding the tea leaves into a powder finer than 120 mesh (about 0.125 millimeters), blending it with an optimized ratio of plant-based adhesives, mechanically kneading the mixture to achieve cohesion, and finally drying it in the shade for structural stabilization.
\n
The store opened in October, and businesses have offered the store partnership opportunities. In addition, around 50 disabled people have come forward to apply. They are able to take orders and be paid per piece after training.
\n
Bai Yunfeng, a man in his late 40s who is crippled by polio, exhibits surprising dexterity despite lacking prior experience in bracelet making. He is capable of completing a simple design in just a couple of minutes.
\n
"I used to work at a mechanical equipment assembly factory. However, this store has provided me with another fulfilling opportunity," Bai said. "Besides closer proximity to home and better pay, I feel like we are not objects of pity, but rather treated equally and valued for our capabilities here, which is very important to me."
\n
Zhang said: "I hope to eLine truncated
